Full textIn the framework of processes intensification in a heterogeneous media, power ultrasound is a promising technology. However, the question remains to know how the ultrasound activity would be impacted in such a media. So the aim of the present thesis was to study the influence of a glass beads (8-12 µm to 6 mm, at 3.10-3 à 80 g.L-1 concentrations) on the ultrasound activity at low (20 kHz) and high frequency (376 – 1 135 kHz) within the same reactor. In a homogeneous medium, the characterization of the sonochemical activity by iodometry revealed an optimum of frequency at 575 kHz for an ultrasonic power of 51.5 ± 0.5 W. In a heterogeneous medium, the characterization of the ultrasonic activity gave opposite results. On the one hand, the ultrasonic power measured by calorimetry was not impacted by the presence of particles. This illustrated the limits of this physical characterization technique in such a media. On the other hand, for all the dosimetry techniques (iodometry, Fricke method, terephthalic acid oxidation), the chemical characterization of the ultrasound showed its dependence with the developed area by the glass beads. This behaviour is due to a tow kind of interactions (wave-particle and bubble-particle) responsible for ultrasound attenuation and cavitation bubble collapse modification. Also, the comparison of these results revealed a change in the radical species formation. The results of the degradation of dimethylphenol showed the dependence of the sonochemical activity are the same near the cavitation bubble as in the bulk solution. Moreover, the measure of the physical activity based on radiation pressure follows a similar trend as the sonochemical activity. So this method is advised in a heterogeneous media. Finally, the results of cartography obtained by sonochemiluminescence showed a uniform spatial distribution for a specific developed surface range. Nevertheless, this homogenization, which is induced by a modification of the acoustic field, is counterbalanced by a loss of high-intensity areas

Full textCorrelations between thermodynamic properties and the carbon atom number of pure alkanes are established from literature data in order to carry out the phase equilibrium's modelling. The liquid and the alpha RII behave as an ideal mixture and the Wilson's model reproduce the equilibrium line between the ordered solid and the disordered one, considering the disorder of the disordered phase for consecutive n-alkane's binary mixture. For paraffinic waxes, the model of ideal solution for the liquid and alpha RII phases overestimate the wax's cloud point. However, the distribution of the liquid phase's alkanes and the wax's solidification domain can be estimated from this model. The solid phase's disorder, as well as the aromatic addition to the mixture make the wax more soluble in a solvent

Full textGermanium-Tin alloy is a unique class semiconductor gaining a strong attention because of its significant electrical and optical properties. Sn incorporation in Ge allows straightforward band-gap engineering enabling to enhance the electron and hole mobilities, and for a sufficient Sn amount an indirect-to-direct band-gap transition occurs. Its versatility rises due the possible monolithic integration on Si-platforms making it an ideal material in domains of optoelectronics, and high speed electronic devices. This thesis has focused on the fabrication and characterization of crystalline Ge1-xSnx nanowires with high Sn concentrations. New strategies were designed to fabricate many types of GeSn nanowires. The results have been explained as function of the existing kinetic models. A new growth mechanism was reported (i.e. Solid-Solid-Solid mechanism – SSS), it consists of growing in-plane GeSn nanowires using Sn catalysts below the melting point of Sn. Four mass transport models were proposed for the SSS growth mechanism. Various characterizations (e.g. TEM and APT) were done to investigate the physical and chemical properties of the obtained nanowires

Full textWater soluble associative polymers are macromolecules with an hydrophilic blaekbone with tethered hydrophobic groups. The polymeric system studied here is hydrophocally end-capped poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with alkyl group at one (monofunctionalized polymer) or both ends (di-functionalized) that form, in water, star-like or flower-like micelles respectively. At high concentration, the micelles are highly interpenetrated and jam with each others. At this time a transition from a low viscous liquid to an elastic solid occurs. Since water is a marginal solvent for PEO, one can vary the quality of the solvent by changing the temperature. This means that the liquid-solid transition is both function of concentration and temperature. The main goal of this work is a quantitative study of this liquid-solid transition. Ln particular, this investigation is addresses to the influence of mixing micelles with linear homopolymer or mixing different kinds of micelles

The prime objective is to extend the existing work of computational fluid dynamics (cfd) by analysing the hydrodynamics and mixing in gas-liquid and gas-liquide-solid flows in airlift then to test the potentialites of cfd modelling to simulate bubble columns. The second objective is to propose simpler models to calculate the airlifts and bubble olumns : 1d model. The results obtained with cfd will provide closure relations for the problems of the 1d model. The results of the numerical simulation and 1d are systematicly compared to the experimental results

Full textThe aim of this work is to propose a new experimental set-up that allows the thermal characterization of an industrial product (water, paraffin and n-hexadecane) undergoing phase change, i. E. Solidification/fusion. The considered properties are the thermal conductivities and heat capacities in the liquid and solid states, the phase change temperature and the latent heat. These properties are identified simultaneously by using Levenberg-Marquardt's method. Transient measurements of temperature at the extremities of the sample are used to solve the parameter estimation problem. A sensitivity coefficient analysis is realized and we use this study to present the optimal methodology of identification

Full textIn case of core meltdown in a sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR), it is important to remove the corium, formed from the core. To do so, discharge tubes connecting the core to the sodium plenum can be implemented within the reactor core. They could drive the corium toward a core-catcher placed in the lower part of the vessel. As corium should spread on it, its cooling would be enhanced by increasing its exchange surface with surrounding sodium. Nevertheless, as the corium jet’s temperature would be above 2 000 K, the core-catcher could therefore undergo substantial thermal attack and be ablated. To improve understanding of the ablation process and to provide new validation data for CFD codes, an experimental setup using simulant materials (ie. water and transparent ice) was designed and built. It allows for realtime visualization of ablation. It is the first time that someone has obtained such data, to the best of our knowledge. During the PhD project, this setup named Hot AblatioN of a SOlid by a Liquid - Observations (HAnSoLO) was built. Ablation phenomenology was thus studied. Data were obtained on the ablation velocity along the jet axis and allowed for comparisons with some scaling laws from the literature. Then, an analysis of the cavity which helps understanding the local heat and mass transfer linked to thermal-hydraulics was undertaken. Finally, several new physical models were compared with experimental data. The experimental setup implemented, and the database will be the basis for future studies

Full textIn the field of selective separation for recycling of spent nuclear fuel, liquid-liquid extraction processes are widely used (PUREX, DIAMEX …) in industrial scale. In order to guarantee a sustainable nuclear energy for the forthcoming generations, alternative reprocessing techniques are under development. One of them bases on the studies from Heckmann et al in the 80's and consists in selectively precipitating actinides from aqueous waste solutions by cationic surfactants (liquid-solid extraction). This technique has some interesting advantages over liquid-liquid extraction techniques, because several steps are omitted like stripping or solvent washing. Moreover, the amount of waste is decreased considerably, since no contaminated organic solvent is produced. In this thesis, we have carried out a physico-chemical study to understand the specific interactions between the metallic cations with the cationic surfactant. First, we have analysed the specific effect of the different counter-ions (Cl-, NO3-, C2O42-) and then the effect of alkaline cations on the structural properties of the surfactant aggregation in varying thermodynamical conditions. Finally, different multivalent cations (Cu2+, Zn2+, UO22+, Fe3+, Nd3+, Eu3+, Th4+) were considered; we have concluded that depending on the anionic complex of these metals formed in acidic media, we can observe either an adsorption at the micellar interface or not. This adsorption has a large influence of the surfactant aggregation properties and determines the limits of the application in term of ionic strength, temperature and surfactant concentration

Full textThe study on the physicochemical properties of fatty materials has acquired a growing importance, mainly due to the incentive of their use in energy and nutrition. The efficient production and use of fatty compounds requires a good knowledge of their properties and phase behavior that are necessary for development of processes, especially in production steps such as extraction and refining, but also during storage of the final products. Solid-liquid equilibrium data can be used to improve or propose new separation processes. Also the flash point is an important property that must be considered during storage, transportation and production of flammable compounds, such as biodiesel. This work aimed to study the solid-liquid equilibrium of binary mixtures consisting of fatty alcohols, fatty esters or fatty acids, and to evaluate the flash point of mixtures of ethyl esters, the major constituents of biodiesels, and ethanol, also present in biodiesel in residual levels. Flash points of ethyl esters, and also of the binary mixtures of ethyl esters with ethanol were determined experimentally. An empirical model for predicting the flash point of biodiesels as a function of composition and ethanol content was proposed. The solid-liquid phase diagrams of binary mixtures of fatty alcohol + fatty alcohol or fatty alcohols + fatty acid were determined experimentally by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), using a linear heating rate, or by a stepscan DSC method, with the aim of investigating the occurrence of the eutectic, peritectic and metatectic reactions. X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy with temperature control techniques were applied to complement the understanding of the phase diagrams. The effect of pressure on the solid-liquid equilibrium was investigated for the binary mixtures of ethyl esters or fatty alcohols using an optical microscope coupled to a high pressure cell which allows the pressure increase up to 80 MPa. Margules 2 and 3-suffix and NRTL thermodynamic models were used for describing the liquidus line of the systems that presented peritectic point, and a predictive thermodynamic model was used to model the ESL function of pressure, which in both cases, gave a satisfactory fit compared to the experimental data

Full textWe have studied the behaviour of thixotropic fluids : especially the suspension of laponite. The study of the local level of this suspension, with the help of PIV technique, which allows to better understanding how the organisation of suspension structure when the fluid starts to flow. The study of the validation and the good response of the developed model are achieved by a comparative study between the existing model of Herschel-Bulkley and the measuring of velocity fields. In the case of studied geometry “coaxial disks”, the PIV experimental measuring allows us to identify the existence of two distinct layers when the fluid flows. Indeed, we have observed that the first layer is near to the rotating disc where the fluid is motionless and takes the form of a cone which corresponds to a region near the bottom of the cylinder. The use of commercial CFD code Star-CD has enabled us to highlight the limitations of the model of Herschel-Bulkley in relation to the experimental results. These results were used as reference for comparison with the model of dual kinetic behaviour developed in this work. It was shown that the behaviour of the latter model presents a better matching with the actual behaviour of the flowing suspension although some problems still remain

Full textThis manuscript presents the methodological development of surface tension calculation of solid-liquidinterfaces via molecular dynamics simulations. After a short presentation of the advances in the field ofsurface tension calculation for fluid-fluid and solid-fluid interfaces, the main methods of surface tensioncalculation from a theoretical point of view are shown and generalized for solid-liquid interfaces, thenimplemented in the case of molecular dynamics simulations. A school system, consisting of a graphenesheet for the solid phase and a methane bath for the liquid phase, is then studied to observe the influenceof simulation artifacts on the surface tension calculation, showing in particular much larger size effectsthan in the case of liquid-liquid interfaces. Another system consisting of a copper slice for the solid phaseand a methane bath for the liquid phase made it possible to study the novel effect of solid-liquid systemscalled anisotropy, showing in particular the importance of the tensor character of the surface tension forthis type of system. The influence of the parameters of the cross potential between copper and methaneatoms is then studied. Finally, two application systems are discussed, on the one hand the graphene-watersystem for studying the effects of electrostatic interaction, and on the other hand a system consisting ofan explosive solid, 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) in contact with a polymer bath for theliquid phase, representing a real case of interest
