Full textIn today’s society it is getting more and more important to think about a products enviro nmental impact. With the help from different computer programs it is getting easier to design products that have less impact on the environment. The purpose of this thesis was to get an understanding of how SolidWorks Sustainability can be used during the product development process and with the help from the ten golden rules of EcoDesign and CES EduPack evaluate if and how SolidWorks Sustainability can reduce a product´s environmental impact. Also explain how SolidWorks Sustainability can create environmentally friendly products. Lifecycle analysis was done on a lock and ceiling unit both with SolidWorks Sustainability and CES EduPack. The difference between the programs was particularly large when the analysis was done on the ceiling unit. SolidWorks´ result was that the carbondioxid footprint was 6300 kg and the energy consumption was 1,1 MJ while CES EduPack´s result was 465 kg och 4,71 MJ. The difference was greatest during the using phase. SolidWorks and CES EduPack differed at many aspects. The biggest difference was that SolidWorks was integrated in the CAD, which CES EduPack wasn´t. CES EduPack on the other hand had a much bigger and well organized material database. SolidWorks Sustainability handles four of the ten golden rules; Housekeeping, Weight, Energy and Long Life. It is good to start with the ten golden rules of EcoDesign early in the product development process, as in the specification of demands, brainstorming, concept development and choice of concept. Materials and concepts can then be compared in SolidWorks Sustainability. A lifecycle analysis can also be conducted and the product can be compared to earlier models or existing guidelines.

Full textDevelopment of Industrial robots is becoming more expensive and time consuming over the years. A lot of costs are spent in the development, and so it is necessary to improve the conceptual design phase.
This thesis is an object lesson that shows one of the multiple ways to improve the named phase.
It basically consists on, using a CAD program, build a robot whose parameters have to be modified from a user interface. The parameters to change are the dimensions of the robot’s parts (morphology parameterization) and also the parts to use (topology parameterization), which can be chosen from a large library of different parts.
Some parameters are changed so as the build robot has similar mass properties to a given one, in order to be able to do some tests with it and export the results to improve the real robot. For this reason, in the interface done there is also written some code to get the mass properties of the built robot. Even so, this thesis only shows how to do the named actions but it has not been done any kind of test.

Full textThe ability to use 3D printing technology directly depends on the quality of the input geometric model. It is usually difficult to see small defects, missing triangles, convex and other deformations of the grid in slicers. There are online services stlfixers that fix network models. They quickly fill in defects, but are limited by the size and number of triangles of the model. In this case, slicers "do not see" the smallest holes in the grid or one / two triangles that protrude beyond the shape of the part, such defects are simply not printed, so in most cases stlfixers are quite enough.
Можливість використання технології 3D-друку безпосередньо залежить від якості вхідної геометричної моделі. Зазвичай важко побачити дрібні дефекти, відсутні трикутники, опуклі та інші деформації сітки в нарізках. Існують онлайн-сервіси stl-fixers, які виправляють моделі. Вони швидко заповнюють дефекти, але обмежені розміром і кількістю трикутників моделі. У цьому випадку слайсери "не бачать" найменших отворів у сітці або одного / двох трикутників, які виступають за форму деталі, такі дефекти просто не друкуються, тому в більшості випадків stlfixers цілком достатньо.

Full textProduktkostnader är idag en viktig faktor som bestämmer både företags konkurrenskraft och lönsamhet. Både tillverkare och konstruktörer kan påverka produktkostnader, antingen genom att bestämma tillverkningsmetoder eller konstruktioner för produkter. Lyckade beslut leder till fler ordrar eller fler sålda produkter, men för att rätt beslut ska göras behövs snabba och tillförlitliga kostnadsuppskattningar. För att underlätta detta beslutstagande har SolidWorks utvecklat en ny modul, SolidWorks Costing, som snabbt gör kostnadsuppskattningar baserade på geometrier av 3D-modeller direkt i CAD-programmet SolidWorks. Detta examensarbete utfördes på uppdrag av SolidEngineer, SolidWorks återförsäljare. Syftet med examensarbetet var att utvärdera implementationsmöjligheterna av SolidWorks Costing. Möjligheterna undersöktes genom att studera hur kostnadsuppskattningar gjordes i industrin och SolidWorks Costing samt genom att utveckla en implementationsplan för programmet. En förstudie gjordes för att undersöka programmets funktionalitet. Kostnadsuppskattning för plåtbearbetning valdes att undersökas vidare och implementeras. Intervjuer med företag inom plåtbearbetningsindustrin gjordes för att ta reda på nuvarande metoder för kostnadsuppskattningar och två pilotstudier gjordes tillsammans med två partnerföretag för at testa implementation av SolidWorks Costing. Intervjuerna visade att även om alla de intervjuade företagen använde sin egen metod för kostnadsuppskattning, använde de sig av samma parametrar när kostnader uppskattades. De nuvarande metoderna var ojämna och tidskrävande, trots detta hade tillverkarna full tilltro till dem och var skeptiska till att använda datoriserade kostnadsuppskattningar ända till pilotstudierna gjordes. I fall 1 blev den genomsnittliga skillnaden mellan SolidWorks Costings resultat och företagets efterkalkyler 9 %, för fall 2 gav SolidWorks Costing samma resultat som företaget. Båda partnerföretagen var nöjda med resultaten och partnerföretag 2 övervägde permanent implementation av SolidWorks Costing. Baserat på erfarenheterna från pilotstudierna och insamlingen av implementationsteorier togs även en implementationsplan för SolidWorks Costing fram.

Full textThis thesis was conducted in cooperation with Svero Lifting. The company is developing hoisting products. Today Svero Lifting is working to reduce the weight of the company’s components by changing the material and have now started a development of a new hoisting, a trolley and a chain block. Svero Lifting wants to continue the company’s hoist development so that the components coordinate with each other and excel on the market. At this point Svero Lifting has no CAD-models or drawings of the company’s products. The main purpose of the thesis is to create a new style of a chain block. The component’s shape and style shall reflect Svero Lifting and the company’s newly designed trolley. The second aim of the thesis is to implement modern technology in Svero Lifting’s product development. The authors’ goal is to style a new body that shall fulfil Svero Lifting’s requirements and reflect the company’s newly styled trolley. The company desires a less time consuming option for changing the hook. The authors’ want to enhance Svero Lifting’s product development by creating a base for CAD-models. The goals of the thesis is to deliver CAD-models and drawings of the chain block’s inner parts, to propose a less time consuming option for changing the hook and as well a new style of the chain block’s body to the company. Through the methods competitor analysis, visual brief, brainstorming and gut feel the authors’ created new concepts for the chain block’s shape. A pros- and cons analysis was created to decide the final decision of the concepts. In the result chapter the final concept of the body is presented. In the chapter CAD-models of the chain block’s inner parts, the newly designed body and the final option for changing the hook are presented. In the discussion chapter the authors discuss how the new style of the chain block body reflects Svero Lifting and harmonizes with the company’s new trolley. The authors are assuming that the company’s product development can be more efficient by introducing CAD-models. The base of CAD-models can for instance be used in a database or simulations.

Full textExamensarbetet har genomförts i sammarbete med MasterFlow AB i Västervik som ägs av EWEBE Group. Företaget tillverkar och säljer varmkanalsystem som är skräddarsydda till kunder. Problemet som MasterFlow AB har stött på är vid konstruktion av komplicerade varmkanalsystem som belastar CAD(Computer Aided Design)-systemet SolidWorks. Med flera varierande längder, fronter och spetsar som bygger upp varmgötena till varmkanalsystemet byggs problematiken upp för MasterFlow AB. Syftet med arbetet är att automatisera konstruktionen av varmkanalsystemet så den inte överbelastar CAD-systemet SolidWorks. För att få förståelse om problemet har det gjorts flera undersökningar och observationer på företaget, där fokus har kretsat kring hur arbetet ser ut med konstruktion av varmkanalsystem. Med hjälp av företagsledningen har det insamlats tillräckligt med information för att lösa problematiken för att finna en lösning. Genomförandet av automatiseringen har baserats på ett flödesschema som skapades och som beskriver hur MasterFlow AB går tillväga när de väljer varmgöt till sina varmkanalsystem. Därefter programmerades automatiseringen i programmet Visual Studio där programmeringen bestått av VBA (Visual Basic for Applications). Vidare har sammankopplingen av programmeringen skett i programmet Howtomation, skapat av universitetslektorn Joel Johansson. Resultatet av programmeringen i Howtomation har genererat ett program, kallat ”Bushing Generator”, där automatisering av varmgöt är fullt möjlig. I programmet Bushing Generator väljs det alternativ som är aktuellt för varmgötet och skapar ett eller flera varmgöten som monteras in i sammanställningen för balken. Automatisering på MasterFlow AB anses ha stora möjlighet att utvecklas, med automation som innefattar balken och skapandet av ritningar.

The Power Electric Building Block (PEBB) 6000 is a shipboard power converter unit developed by the Navy's Electric Ship Research and Development Consortium (ESRDC). Cooling strategies for the PEBB 6000 are constrained by its size, accessibility, and high heat flux. This paper proposes an air heat exchanger design that combines a parallel plate-fin heat sink with air jet impingement onto its fins. Previous studies showed that jet impingement methods can yield heat transfer rates that are three times of those produced by conventional cooling methods, which confines a parallel flow to a surface. In order to evaluate the design feasibility of a multi-jet impingement air heat exchanger, this paper simulates the temperature contours and the flow trajectories for various multi-jet impingement models using SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation in two stages. First, multi-jet impingement models with varying number of nozzles, nozzle diameters, impingement heights, arrangements, and velocity configurations were simulated for a single parallel plate fin. Cooler fin temperatures were achieved with larger diameter size, smaller impingement height, higher inlet velocity, and more nozzles. In the second stage, a model for the multi-jet air heat exchanger was created. When compared with simulation results for the heat sink with conventional parallel air flow, the fin thermal resistance of the heat sink was reduced by approximately 60 percent and the heat transfer rate was increased by almost threefold with the multi-jet impingement heat exchanger setup. These results help assess the potential of using a multi-jet impingement heat exchanger to cool the PEBB and provide valuable insight to improve future models.

Full textEtt entresolplan är ett extra våningsplan som man kan montera upp för att utnyttja mer yta både under och över entresolplanet. En entresol används på många olika platser, detta examensarbete fokuserar dock på ett entresolplan som kommer att användas i lagerlokaler. Ett entresolkoncept designades för att uppfylla ett behov ifrån Brännhylte lagersystems AB som ville ha ett entresolplan som använder sig utav Z-160 balkar som huvudkomponent. En kravspecifikation utvecklades för att få konkreta uppgifter vad som skulle uppnås med entresolen. Med hjälp av kravspecifikationen utvecklades ett entresolkoncept som uppfyller dessa krav. Eftersom entresolen kommer att utsättas för massa olika vikter under användning samt att människor ska kunna gå på den så är den tvungen att vara tillräcklig stadig för att kunna användas säkert. Därför analyserades den maximala kraften som entresolplanet kan klara av innan den når sin nedböjningsgräns som är balklängden delat på 400. För att den informationen ska kunna användas i framtiden och för att kunna anpassa entresolen utifrån hur mycket vikt man vill att den ska klara av.

An attempt was made at reconstructing the now decommissioned World War II era destroyer USS Cassin Young using blueprints on file at the Hart Nautical Museum . After the electronic model was constructed, an attempt was made to run an FEA analysis to determine stress levels in the ship's hull. The ship was made using the various Solidworks tools available including surfacing and extrusion tools while using the available blueprints for recreation accuracy. The FEA was not completed due to problems encountered in the meshing and analysis of the complex geometry of the ship hull.

Full textСьогодення виробництво пластмасових виробів швидко зростає та за приблизною оцінкою, становить понад 200–270 млн. тон з темпом приросту до 7 % щорічно. З приростом масштабів даного виробництва з’являється і потреба у покращенні методу виготовлення виробів з пластмасу. В виробництві тонкостінних виробів з пластмасу найбільш продуктивним є спосіб лиття під тиском - один із найбільш поширених методів переробки пластмас, під час якого гранули розплавляються і під тиском потрапляють у прес-форму, яка охолоджує масу і формує кінцевий виріб. Перевагами якого є те, що він дозволяє знижувати вагу виробу, економити матеріал і суттєво скорочувати час охолодження виливки. Зокрема, в процесах традиційного лиття під тиском час циклу зазвичай складають від 30 до 60 с, а в тонкостінному лиття воно скорочується до 6-20 с. Це призводить до значного зниження виробничих витрат.В даній роботі необхідно провести моделювання процесу лиття з тонкостінними деталями, одна з яких корпус резетки. В SOLIDWORKS Plastic експериментальним методом треба підбирати необхідні для забезпечення якісної поверхні виробу, режими роботи литтєвої машини, а саме необхідний тиск, температуру пресс-форми та тип пластику. Метою моделювання процесу є дослідження та виявлення фізико-механічних властивостей різних видів термопластичних матеріалів, також виявлення причин появи та усунення можливих дефектів, визначення оптимальних режимів роботи для підвищення якості поверхні виробу. Проведено дослідження зразків різних тонкостінних деталей з пластмасу . Запропонована методика може бути застосована для дослідження і оптимізації виробництва виробів з пластмасу. За допомогою неї ми зможемо знайти місце появи дефектів, а саме пузирів повітря, лінії спаїв, утяжин.
Today, the production of plastic products is growing rapidly and is estimated at more than 200-270 million tons with a growth rate of up to 7% annually. As the scale of this production grows, so does the need to improve the method of making plastic products. In the production of thin-walled plastic products, the most productive method is injection molding - one of the most common methods of plastic processing, during which the granules melt and under pressure fall into a mold that cools the mass and forms the final product. The advantages of which are that it allows you to reduce the weight of the product, save material and significantly reduce the cooling time of the casting. In particular, in the processes of traditional injection molding, the cycle time is usually from 30 to 60 s, and in thin-walled casting it is reduced to 6-20 s. This leads to a significant reduction in production costs. In this work it is necessary to model the casting process with thin-walled parts, one of which is the housing of the socket. In SOLIDWORKS Plastic the necessary method of ensuring the quality of the product surface, the modes of operation of the molding machine, namely the required pressure, mold temperature and type of plastic must be selected experimentally. The purpose of process modeling is to study and identify the physical and mechanical properties of different types of thermoplastic materials, as well as to identify the causes and eliminate possible defects, to determine the optimal modes of operation to improve the surface quality of the product. A study of samples of various thin-walled plastic parts. The proposed technique can be used to study and optimize the production of plastic products. With its help we will be able to find the place of appearance of defects, namely air bubbles, lines of joints, weights.

Full textThe purpose of instructions is to pass a strategy or method for work on to a previously unexperienced person. For an instruction to be successful it must be designed in a manner that allows easy use and correct interpretation. The increasing demand for customer customization and flexibility leads to an ever increasing need for manufacturing companies to create and utilize instructions in an effective way. On the behalf of PartnerTech in Åtvidaberg, a project was conducted as a master thesis during the spring semester of 2014, with the target of facilitating the creation and revision of instructions. How information should be presented to best support the user was also a main objective of the project. Beside this, a method for categorizing the company’s products was requested, to facilitate the allocation of personnel at the assembly lines. PartnerTech as a contract manufacturer is continuously challenged with new products at various development stages. As a consequence, instructions needs to be created regularly. The initiative for the project originates from the dissatisfaction related to the current method. The master thesis has been conducted by a student at the mechanical engineering program at Linköping University. The initial part of the project involved a study of the current method and the company’s needs, as well as research within the concerned areas. Later the software SolidWorks Composer was evaluated to see which possible benefits it could hold. A proposal for a new layout of the instructions was developed, based on the found literature during the research. Instructions was established using the layout and principles, which then was tested on real products. Parallel to this a method for categorizing the products was developed. The project resulted in an alternative layout for instructions and a proposal for a new presentation method. The tool proposed for creating and maintaining the instructions is Microsoft PowerPoint, which was used during the project and showed several benefits compared to the current software. The evaluation of SolidWorks Composer showed that there is potential for more effective creation of images for instructions, given that some criteria is fulfilled. The method for categorizing products resulted in a checklist, based essentially on yes/no-questions.

Full textThis is a project that has been carried out in autumn 2016 for Bachelor of engineering in mechanical engineering at Umeå University. The work included 15 credits. The aim of the project is to produce new parts for a machine that APL uses in its production. The machine in question fills bottles with liquid which is then sealed and sent on to the next station. APL makes use of several different sizes of these bottles but only have access to one size of format elements. This created a problem in that when you are working with the smaller bottles you are forced to put some extra material in where the format parts were too big. The materials that the old format parts consisted of was also an area that was investigated. This is because all parts are Heat-sterilized before they are used in the machine and during such treatment they are exposed to high temperatures. With the material used at the present time this heating process was causing the parts to lose their shape as they are not made for the temperature to which they are exposed. The purpose of this project is thus to produce 3d-drawings for the new format elements that are tailored to the bottles with smaller dimensions, as well as to investigate whether there are other materials that may be more suitable for the strain that parts are exposed to. To achieve this, i have examined the old parts and have taken the relevant measurements. The old measurements have been corrected and the new models have been drawn up in the CAD program SolidWorks. Since then, dimensioned drawings designed to serve as a manufacturing base have been made. A study on material opportunities has also taken place, focusing on different plastic materials and the manufacturing processes that are relevant. Focus in terms of the materials was largely put on properties at high temperatures. Values are obtained from tables and calculations have been made, and together, this shows what material is best suited for the APLs purposes.
