Abstract:
This article reports on a corpus stylistic study of the language of soliloquies in Shakespeare’s plays. Literary corpus stylistics can use corpus linguistic methods to test claims made by literary critics and identify hitherto unnoticed features. Existing literary studies of soliloquies tend to define and classify them, to trace the history of the form or to offer literary appreciation; yet they pay surprisingly little attention to the language which characterises soliloquies. By creating a soliloquy corpus and a dialogue corpus from 37 Shakespeare plays, and comparing the former against the l

The first complete study of the dramatic conventions that governed soliloquies in Western drama throughout history, Shakespeare and the History of Soliloquies reveals a drastic and heretofore undisclosed shift in those conventions after Shakespeare's death. In theatrical history there have been three types of soliloquy: speeches that are addressed directly to the audience, speeches that are self-addressed, and interior monologues. Until the middle of the nineteenth century, one type of soliloquy occupied a place as the dominant convention during each major period of theatrical history. Hirsh a

This paper attempts to explain the application of speech act theory (John Searle, 1976) on the soliloquies expressed by Hamlet and Keshulal Singh. The descriptive focus of this study is to draw attention to the felicity conditions whether they are being fulfilled by the speakers while making an utterance or not. Content analysis based on speech act theory is used for this paper. It has been pointed out that declaratives are less while directives are more applicable on these soliloquies, with the help of analysis. Hamlet and Keshulal’s inner self is being depicted through their speeches and it

Abstract:
This thesis examines the soliloquies in William Shakespeare's Richard III and Hamlet with the aim of showing that the soliloquies serve as a record of the evolution of the titular heroes. I examine each of the seven soliloquies, focusing on the speaker's character, and how they have changed throughout the respective plays. Next, I compare and contrast the two characters, their personalities, and their moral fiber. Finally, I discuss how Shakespeare uses the soliloquies as part of the play as a whole.
