Full textThe infiltration of treated wastewater (reclaimed water) into soils is a practice that can be very useful for aquifer recharge, especially useful in areas with water scarcity. However, it is a practice that presents risks for groundwater contamination, since the soil properties may change during the infiltration process and the hydrodynamic characteristics associated with the transport and removal of pollutants can also be changed. The evaluation of the variation of the hydrodynamic characteristics of the flow on a residual soil, previously selected for the infiltration of reclaimed water, was studied through laboratorial experiments in a vertical column, for two hydraulic loadings (2.34 and 6.11 cm/d), which were established in a previous study for the same soil. A non-reactive tracer (Blue Dextran) was used in a discrete impulse experiment, being the response detected in three sampling points located at 5, 15 and 25 cm from the top of the soil column. The results indicate that regardless of the used velocity, the front of the tracer was detected earlier than was expected, which would mean the coexistence of poor irrigated areas and dead volume areas. The last ones have had more significant along the column after 8 months of operation and have stimulated the hydraulic short-circuit. In the first 5 cm, the tracer wave was more delayed, especially after 8 months of operation the column, due to the development of biomass clusters and solid matter, which have led to the development of internal recirculations responsible for the retention of the tracer for longer periods. An analytical solution developed for the NTS model satisfactorily described the residential distribution curves for all the experiments. It was observed that the percentage of dead volumes (Vm) was much higher after 8 months of the column operation and the longitudinal dispersion had a strong linear relationship with increasing Vm. Thus, the results of this study allowed assessing the evolution of mechanisms that cause disturbance to the flow and transport of pollutants on soils, as well as anticipating operational strategies for infiltration structures in order to avoid the decrease in pollutants removal efficiency.
