Abstract:

Concerto for Trumpet and Chamber Ensemble is a three-movement work for solo trumpet and ten instruments, one player to a part, of approximately fourteen minutes in length. It is scored for flute, oboe, clarinet in B-flat, bassoon, piano, percussion, trumpet (solo) in C, violin, viola, cello, and double bass. The principal percussion instrument is xylophone with lesser parts for suspended cymbal and triangle.

The purpose of this research is to create an awareness of the significant contributions to the solo and chamber trumpet literature made by Jiří Laburda (b. 1931), a twentieth-century composer from the Czech Republic. Laburda has an extensive oeuvre including 22 solo pieces for trumpet and accompaniment, four pieces for two or more trumpets, two collections of trumpet duets, eight brass chamber works including at least one trumpet, and six works for brass quintet. In 1638 Girolamo Fantini wrote eight multi-sectional trumpet sonatas. This dissertation compares these sonatas with recognized stile moderno solo instrumental sonatas by Biagio Marini and Dario Castello in order to show that Fantini’s sonatas are stile moderno trumpet sonatas. This study looks at how form, texture, motivic organization, and instrumental effects function in the works of Castello, Marini, and Fantini. This paper investigates the influence of jazz on the nine solo trumpet compositions of the French composer Eugène Bozza (1905-1991). Bozza, like many other French composers in the first half of the 20th century, combines traditional elements of western European art music with innovations of American popular music. While Bozza holds a prominent role as a composer of solo trumpet literature in the mid-20th century, little has been written about the influence of jazz in his works. Fractus I is a composition for trumpet in C and live electronic sound. The electronics were primarily created using SuperCollider, an environment and programming language for real time audio synthesis. The trumpet was one of the wind instruments Hindemith used frequently in his chamber music, and he employed it prominently in five works from 1925 to 1954. <p> The purpose of this study was to address performance practice, and develop a systematic approach to the preparation of three pieces composed for the <i> Morceaux de Concours</i> at the Paris Conservatory. The pieces were written by former students of the conservatory. abstract: This thesis proposes an augmentation of the Complete Method for Trombone by Jean Baptiste Arban. Although it is widely considered one of the leading trombone method books in the world, a thorough consideration of the demands of most performed solo literature today reveals serious shortcomings in the Arban Method for preparing trombonists to encounter such demands as meter and rhythm, keys and tonalities, range and endurance, clefs and F-attachment usage.
