Abstract:
In this paper we describe a paradigm for content-focused matchmaking, based on a recently proposed model for constraint acquisition and satisfaction. Matchmaking agents are constraint-based solvers that interact with other, possibly human, agents (Customers). The Matchmaker provides potential solutions ("suggestions") based on partial knowledge, while gaining further information about the problem itself from the other agent through the latter's evaluation of these suggestions. The dialogue between Matchmaker and Customer results in iterative improvement of solution quality, as demonstrated in simple simulations. We also show empirically that this paradigm supports "suggestion strategies" for finding acceptable solutions more efficiently or for increasing the amount of information obtained from the Customer. This work also indicates some ways in which the tradeoff between these two metrics for evaluating performance can be handled.

Abstract:
Abstract In this work, the approximate analytical solutions of the Generalized Hydrodynamic Equations (GHE) for turbulent flow in channel is presented. The general solution is a superposition of the laminar (parabolic) and turbulent (superexponential) solutions. The analytical solution compares well with the experimental data by Van Doorne (2007) and Nikuradse (1933). It is proposed to explain the nature of turbulence as oscillations between the laminar (parabolic) and turbulent (superexponential) solutions. The suggestion is confirmed by comparing the results for turbulent velocity fluctuations of the analytical formula with the experiment by Van Doorne (2007). The Navier-Stokes equations do not have the superexponential solution. The obtained analytical solution provides a complete structure of the turbulent boundary layer that compares well with the experiments by Wei and Willmarth (1989).

Abstract:
<p>This study aims to connect problem-based learning with the problematic aspects during English lessons in school. In this way, suggestions for solutions to these problems could be generated. The study took place at an upper secondary school located in the middle regions of Sweden. In this school six unstructured observations were done during the English lessons in order to locate the problematic aspects. The students who participated in this study were in the ages of sixteen to eighteen years old. The theoretical framework was based on literature on problem-based learning and learning in general. The essential features of problem-based learning have been summarized and connected with the problematic aspects and classroom activities from the observations. In this way, it has been possible to come up with suggestions for solutions to some problems, such as unwillingness to speak and lack of motivation among students. The conclusions in this essay are that the problematic aspects dealt with features, such as unwillingness to speak as well as that the students did not understand the learning materials and that the teacher was not supportive. The solutions for these problems dealt mostly with triggering motivation by presenting problem-solving tasks, working with interaction and metacognition and planning the tasks in accordance with the students’ zone of proximal development. Furthermore, the teacher should work as a guide in the classroom to help the students along the way. The students should also receive positive and constructive feedback from the teacher, which will improve the learning among the students.</p>

Abstract:
Healthcare associated infections (HCAI) are a major problem in healthcare today. Preterm infants have problems keeping their body temperature within normal boundaries due to heat-loss. They therefore need special care that is administered with the help of incubators, which help minimise the heat loss via convection. Within neonatology the incubator has been identified as one of the contributing factors to HCAI due to the warm and humid environment, making it easy to spread nosocomial flora. To assess if the incubator is a factor in the spreading of HCAI this project has focused on ATP+AMP (total ATP) luminescence measurements to find areas in the incubator that are likely to contribute to the spread of HCAI and suggesting solutions to some of these. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is found in both organic debris and bacteria and is therefore a good indicator of a problem area due to organic debris acting as nutrients. Only the incubator box of the Giraffe® OmniBed® incubator was studied. The cleaning process was observed on multiple occasions and together with interviews resulted in a number of 29 hypothesised problem areas, on or within the incubator box, that were measured before and after cleaning. The results show that incubators collect a substantial amount of total ATP during its use. Measurements also show that parts that are cleaned by a disinfector are cleaner than those parts that are cleaned manually. Areas on the main compartment became more contaminated after cleaning which further indicated that the design of the incubator needs improving. It was also concluded that there often was residue from soap left on the surface of the main compartment resulting in inhibition of the total ATP luminescence reaction. This resulted in unrealistic low values due to the inclusion of foam and soap in the sample and as a result 45 out of 570 measurements were excluded. Caution is advised when using the Kikkoman total ATP luminescence method, especially on the main body (chassis) of the incubator. A steam vapour cleaner and flask cleanser brush could be used to better reach and clean areas such as cavities and around the bed heating element. The use of the steam vapour cleaner could also diminish or eliminate the use of surface disinfectant that causes red irritated eyes and dizziness in the cleaning staff. The functionality of the incubator was found to be excellent but major improvements can be made in the incubator design to make the cleaning of the incubator easier.<br>Vårdrelaterade infektioner (VRI) är ett stort problem inom vården idag.

Abstract:
While many music educators learn how to teach through teacher training programs, the standard mode of transmission in which piano teachers learn to teach applied piano is through proficiency of the instrument under the guidance of a master teacher. This tacit development of pedagogical knowledge occurs through the master-apprentice model of pedagogy. The purposes of this study were (a) to explore how piano teachers learn how to teach from, and independent of, piano pedagogy coursework, overcome challenges, and continue to add to their pedagogy knowledge, and (b) to explore topics that would be most useful in a piano pedagogy course or program. This exploratory research design consisted of a series of semi-structured interviews. Piano teachers of varying ages, educational levels, and years of teaching experience (N = 12) were interviewed as to their experiences as students, autonomous transition into the teaching role, and the informal or formal learning opportunities which contributed to their development as piano teachers. Upon reflecting on their experiences in higher education compared to their professional lives as piano teachers, interviewees were asked to make suggestions for the future of piano pedagogy and the piano curriculum in general. In analyzing the data, 11 major themes emerged in the interview transcripts which revealed aspects of the interviewees' transition into the teaching role and development as piano teachers: (1) piano teachers were autonomously resourceful when transitioning into the teaching role, (2) experiential learning (i.e., learning by doing, gaining experience, and trial-and-error), (3) piano teachers evoke memories (of former teachers, materials played, and experiences as students) in transitioning into the teaching role, (4) piano teachers emulate former teachers + a mix of elements in developing their teaching style, (5) overcoming challenges and seeking out resources, (6) formal learning experiences (including piano pedagogy coursework), (7) partnership of learning and teaching (apprenticeship and cognitive apprenticeship), (8) support in the field (including the role of professional activities), (9) teaching confidence, (10) reflective practice, and (11) reflections and suggestions for the future. The pianists interviewed experienced an autonomous transition into the teaching role as they received no formal teacher-training and very little guidance when beginning to teach. Although the master-apprentice model is often attributed as the primary means in which piano teaching is disseminated, experiential learning (e.g., learning by doing, gaining experience, and trial-and-error) factored just as prominently into the pianists' transition into the teaching role and early development as piano teachers. Additionally, apprenticeship (i.e., guided teaching) and cognitive apprenticeship (i.e., formal learning combined with authentic hands-on teaching experiences) were two facilitative modes of learning to teach experienced by some of the interviewees. The pianists interviewed demonstrated incredible personal initiative in navigating their autonomous transition into the teaching role and development as piano teachers (e.g., teaching style, teaching confidence, teaching identity, and reflective practice) by deriving meaning through the process of overcoming challenges, seeking out resources and support in the field, monitoring and correcting their own performance, and finding measures to continually refine their teaching. The importance of pedagogical coursework and increased teacher-training experiences in the higher education setting were emphasized by all piano teachers interviewed, especially when combined with opportunities to observe expert piano teaching and gain authentic hands-on teaching experiences. Similarly, some piano teachers described teaching while pursuing their degree(s) as a means of learning from an academic and career standpoint, as they could immediately apply what they were learning to their own teaching. Piano teachers emphasized the need for business skills for running a successful studio, performance skills beyond the traditional classical repertoire, functional skills to make a viable living (e.g., accompanying, improvisation, harmonizing melodies, and playing for church services), as well as techniques, materials, and special considerations for teaching across the entire lifespan (i.e., "cradle to grave") for a wider variety of learners (e.g., beginning, intermediate, advanced, pre-school age through mature adult, and those with special needs). This exploratory study provided a detailed perspective as to the induction experiences of the piano teacher. It is proposed that further exploration into the pianist's transition into the teaching role could inform the development and restructuring of pedagogical coursework and a wealth of pedagogical materials for practitioners in the field as well as the framework for piano teacher training.

Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för medieteknik (ME), 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-66834.

Abstract:
This thesis presents an in-depth investigation on the subject of how natural language processing and machine learning techniques can be utilized in order to perform a comprehensive analysis of programming issues found in different open source project repositories hosted on GitHub. The research is focused on examining issues gathered from a number of JavaScript repositories based on their user generated textual description. The primary goal of the study is to explore how natural language processing and machine learning methods can facilitate the process of identifying and categorizing distinct issue types. Furthermore, the research goes one step further and investigates how these same techniques can support users in searching for potential solutions to these issues. For this purpose, an initial proof-of-concept implementation is developed, which collects over 30 000 JavaScript issues from over 100 GitHub repositories. Then, the system extracts the titles of the issues, cleans and processes the data, before supplying it to an unsupervised clustering model which tries to uncover any discernible similarities and patterns within the examined dataset. What is more, the main system is supplemented by a dedicated web application prototype, which enables users to utilize the underlying machine learning model in order to find solutions to their programming related issues. Furthermore, the developed implementation is meticulously evaluated through a number of measures. First of all, the trained clustering model is assessed by two independent groups of external reviewers - one group of fellow researchers and another group of practitioners in the software industry, so as to determine whether the resulting categories contain distinct types of issues. Moreover, in order to find out if the system can facilitate the search for issue solutions, the web application prototype is tested in a series of user sessions with participants who are not only representative of the main target group which can benefit most from such a system, but who also have a mixture of both practical and theoretical backgrounds. The results of this research demonstrate that the proposed solution can effectively categorize issues according to their type, solely based on the user generated free-text title. This provides strong evidence that natural language processing and machine learning techniques can be utilized for analyzing issues and automating the overall learning process. However, the study was unable to conclusively determine whether these same methods can aid the search for issue solutions. Nevertheless, the thesis provides a detailed account of how this problem was addressed and can therefore serve as the basis for future research.

碩士<br>國立中山大學<br>管理學院高階經營碩士學程在職專班<br>107<br>Taiwan is home to the major supply chain region for global semiconductor foundry industry and its production, which has been generating many Fabless-IC Design Houses derived from semiconductor foundry industry during past 30 years, among which the basic component MOSFET is the necessity for the production and design of all of the electronic products. With the opening of global economic market and the growth of trading, the IC design companies from Taiwan is not just compete with the their counterparts in Taiwan, with obvious trend of the rising of Chinese Fabless-IC design Houses, nevertheless, the advanced countries, such as America and Japan, is continuously improving the capability of manufacturing new MOEFET semiconductor process, in an effort to open the gap with Taiwan manufacturers in terms of technology, currently the ranking of three major clusters are as follows: America, Taiwan and China. Moreover, the competition among the suppliers is increasingly fierce. Through exploration and analysis of the reason why the MOSEFT semiconductor is out of stock in Taiwan in 2018, the paper builds on the probing of blue sea strategic theory by individual case, to study competitiveness of Taiwan MOEFST IC design house and the opportunity of improvement in innovation. With retrospection of references and focus interviewing of the management from upstream, midstream and downstream companies in such industry, it summarizes the key factor for the reason of out of stock, relations between supply and demand for MOSFET industry and corresponding improvement program. According to the research findings, the enterprise with industrial structure mode of upstream, midstream and downstream would not end up with stable business in eternity under the circumstances of market changes. Upstream is associated with short supply or industrial overcapacity, while the downstream entails the changes in demand. For the short supply of Taiwan MOSFETT industry in 2018, it is hoped that the study would provide related study materials for references, and take the implementation theory of PDCA management circulation as the reference for enterprise upgrading, industrial upgrading and progress, as well as the blue sea strategy.

"First Aid for Collaborative Pianists with Small Hands: Suggestions and Solutions for Awkward Passages from the Standard Repertoire." Doctoral diss., 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.46269.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: There are many passages in the standard collaborative piano repertoire that are best executed with average to larger hands, such as densely voiced chords, fast octave passages, spans of 9ths or 10ths, legato lines with wide ranges, or extended arpeggiated passages. As a petite Asian woman with smaller hands, I am frequently engaged to rehearse and perform such works. Such engagements involve a greater amount of practice and preparation, as I spend time determining how to negotiate passages or avoid mistakes that larger hands could easily solve. Nevertheless, despite my best efforts, it is not always possible for one with smaller hands to play exactly what is written by the composer, and one may end up becoming injured by too much stretching of the fingers or hands, which can lead to stress and tension on the arms. This paper will be discussed certain passages from frequently-performed pieces that can be difficult for smaller hands, what makes each passage so awkward or uncomfortable, and provide several solutions that yield musical results without compromising the composer's original intentions. This paper will not only examine orchestral reductions such as concerti, in which the reductions are a mere representation of the composer's true intentions and therefore easier to adjust, but also repertoire originally written for the piano. Three methods will be offered that, while occasionally straying from the printed score, stay as true as possible to the composer's artistic intensions, all the while allowing these collaborative pianists the possibility to approach this repertoire in a realistic fashion.<br>Dissertation/Thesis<br>Doctoral Dissertation Music 2017

Abstract:
In modern society, significant efforts by the state and society are aimed at improving technology. The level of scientific and technological achievements is becoming a factor determining the competitiveness of the state and affecting all spheres of human activity. The objectives of the study are to evaluate the mechanisms of legal regulation in the field of technology, to develop proposals for their optimization. Using the example of certain areas of technological development, the directions of the formation of the legal status of a person "complicated by a technological element" are shown, problems of its implementation are identified, and adequate legal mechanisms are being searched for that can ensure the stability of the legal status in a volatile socio-technological environment. The work is exploratory in nature, offers new methodological solutions in the fields of law-making and law enforcement, and at the same time helps to orient technology users in matters of their lawful and safe operation. The conclusions and suggestions formulated in the work can be useful for further development of ways to ensure legal guarantees in a post-industrial society. For legal scholars and practitioners, representatives of human rights organizations, public associations and law—making bodies, teachers, students and postgraduates of law schools and faculties, as well as for a wide range of readers who use modern achievements of technological progress.

Abstract:
Wicked Philosophy. Philosophy of Science and Vision Development for Complex Problems provides an overview of the philosophy of the natural sciences, the social sciences and the humanities, and explores how insights from these three domains can be integrated to help find solutions for the complex, ‘wicked’ problems we are currently facing. The core of a new science-based vision is complexity thinking, offering a meta-position for navigating alternative paradigms and making informed choices of resources for projects involving complex problems. The book also brings design thinking into problem-solving and teaching, fostering construction of an integrative approach that bridges structure and action amplified by transdisciplinary engagement of stakeholders in society. It is not always easy to set up a succesfull philosophy course for students in other programs. The author of Wicked Philosophy, Coyan Tromp, has experience in designing courses on philosophy of science for various Bachelor programs. You can find two examples here. The first example is for an introductory course to an Interdisciplinary Philosophy of Science, which is specifically suited for programs focusing at complex problems such as sustainability or health issues. The second example is a program for a course on (Philosophy of) Science in a Post-Truth Society. More examples are also available (e.g. a program in which Philosophy of Science is combined with Vision Development and Future Scenarios). In addition to the program, the author can also provide a workbook with lesson plans, both for online and on campus settings as well as additional literature suggestions for Dutch and French programmes. Abstract:
Mediation in civil trials can effectively resolve disputes outside of court proceedings, easing the burden on the courts if successful. Efficiency in identifying disputes is essential, as a failed attempt at mediation can lengthen the duration of the trial. The decision rests with the judge/tribunal on the basis of numerous documents that contain certain statements significant to the decision. This paper describes an artificial intelligence, AI, solution to provide a decision support system that can process documents and (i) produce reliable suggestions, (ii) produce substantiated reasons by highlighting the statements that led to the suggestion, and (iii) respect privacy and data security. Explainable AI techniques (XAI) technologies were used for this purpose, resulting in a solution that meets the defined objectives. The solution was developed as part of the research project "Agile Justice," funded in the Italian National Governance and Institutional Capacity NOP, and validated against real cases. The solution leveraged the Snap4City framework for data management and AI/XAI solution.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract A mini-flowloop was developed to study CO2 corrosion and corrosion/erosion interactions, and to assess the effectiveness of inhibitors under conditions that simulate multi-phase pipelines. The mini-flowloop was used to study the effect of testing time, steel chemistry, velocity, temperature, fluid chemistry, sand and inhibitors on corrosion rates. The measured corrosion rates in inhibited and uninhibited solutions using the mini-flowloop were significantly different from those measured using other methods such as the Greene cell method. The effect of adding 1/2% Cr to the steel did not improve its CO2 corrosion resistance as has been claimed by some suppliers. The presence of oil in a brine solution increased the corrosion rates for both inhibited and uninhibited solutions. The CO2 corrosion rate increased slightly with increasing flow rate suggesting that the corrosion mechanism is partially diffusion controlled. At high flow rates, the presence of sand enhanced corrosion of steel in both uninhibited and inhibited solutions while at low flow rates sand had no effect on corrosion rates in uninhibited solutions, but it had a profound effect on the rates in inhibited solutions. The water soluble inhibitor was effective in controlling uniform corrosion, but failed to control pitting corrosion for tests conducted in 100% water solution. In 90% water-10% oil solution, the effectiveness of the inhibitor decreased and the corrosion rate increased compared to the oil-free case, but pitting was not observed. When a de-emulsifier was added to a solution inhibited by the water soluble inhibitor, corrosion rate increased dramatically. The oil soluble inhibitor was not successful in controlling pitting corrosion at low flow rates or uniform corrosion at high flowrates.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Reinforcing steel bars with three types of surface conditions (as-received mill scale, prerusted in 3 5% NaCl solution, or sandblasted) were exposed in open-circuit immersion tests in pH 12.6 saturated Ca(OH)2 solution and pH 13.3 (SPS1) and pH 13.6 (SPS2) simulated concrete pore solutions. These solutions were free of chlorides at the beginning of the test to allow the steel specimens to passivate and then the chloride concentration was increased in several steps. The corrosion potential was monitored and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests were performed periodically on selected specimens. It was found that active corrosion for all three surface conditions took place in both the pH 12.6 saturated Ca(OH)2 solution and pH 13.3 SPS1, when the [Cl-] reached threshold levels. However, sustained active corrosion of steel was not found in pH 13.6 SPS in a testing period of about two years, although the final [Cl-] in that solution reached 3.0M. Removing the mill scale or rust from the surface by sandblasting was beneficial in elevating the chloride corrosion threshold in alkaline solutions, although the corrosion rate of sandblasted steel after pitting initiation was higher than those of the other two groups. The threshold [Cl-]/[OH-] ratio increased significantly with pH, suggesting the strong inhibiting effect of OH- ions at high levels. Estimated ranges of the total chloride corrosion threshold in concrete based on the liquid solution measurements and on available chloride binding data were in general agreement with values observed in practice.

Marais, Willem-Louis. "Solids Formation in MEA Triazine Contact Towers, Prevention and Advice." In CONFERENCE 2022. AMPP, 2022. https://doi.org/10.5006/c2022-17483.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Triazines (Hexahydrotriazines) are one of the most used H2S scavenger chemistries in the North American oil and gas industry, specifically MEA triazines. The chemistry and application methods are well known due to over 2 decades of use, it has gained a commodity status and is thus a highly cost effective H2S treatment solution. Currently it offers one of the lowest cost per mass of H2S removed available in the market. There are however risks when using triazines, one being the formation of polymeric solids. This is mainly due to “overspending” the Triazine (over exposure of the dithiazine to H2S). The term “over spent” was commonly referred to the creation of Trithianes. Recent studies have shed more light on the triazine reaction pathways and provided a more realistic approached to solids formation.4 This paper will focus on the use of MEA triazines in static and dynamic systems, specifically co-current and counter-current flooded dynamic contact towers, and how solids form in them, what can be done to reduce or eliminate solids formation and design suggestions for systems that has far lower fouling risks. The solutions and suggestions discussed in this paper comes from field experience with these systems.

Abstract:
Abstract The majority of investigations of Al-Zn-In sacrificial anode alloys has involved determining the electrochemical behavior in natural or substitute ocean water. Several investigators have noted that the activation process “needs” chloride ion (Cl-) and there are at least two publications suggesting the sulfate (SO4=) anion inhibits aluminum corrosion and/or indium activated alloy capability. Therefore, activation testing was conducted with a variety of anions including mixed chloride/sulfate solutions of various combinations and concentrations. The results are presented and discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract To maximize the mechanical properties of Ni-base superalloys, solution heat treatment is essential to sufficiently homogenize the dendritic segregations formed during solidification. To investigate the homogenization behavior during solution heat treatment, a Ni-base single crystal superalloy, TMS-238, was heat treated under various conditions; temperatures ranging from 1573 to 1613 K for times ranging from 2 to 100 h. After solution heat treatment, the average concentrations of Re, an element that exhibits the highest degree of segregation, in dendrite core and inter-dendritic regions were analyzed. From these results, apparent diffusion constants, Dapp, were determined based on a proposed homogenization model. Obtained Dapp values were significantly smaller than the diffusion constant of Re in Ni, strongly suggesting that the apparent diffusion coefficients should be obtained experimentally when using the target alloy.

Abstract:
Abstract Liquid Epoxy Polymer Concrete has been for the past decades the preferred solution for HDD applications in North America. This paper follows 30 years after Stephanie Powers' publication and highlights the advantages of the Liquid Epoxy Polymer Concrete technology as an abrasion-resistant coating that has been used in thousands of directional drill applications for oil, gas, and water pipelines. There has been an evolution in the understanding of technology and its application. The paper looks back on successes and lessons learned for this technology. Based on field and laboratory testing, the paper develops a comparative analysis with other alternative technologies such as dual-layer FBE-ARO, 3LPE, and the new composite technologies. The paper concludes by suggesting a correlation between project/operation parameters and product selection as well as several successful case studies of the Liquid Epoxy Polymer Concrete technology.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Severe corrosion damage may occur when gas transmission pipelines are exposed, at disbonded coating locations, to groundwaters containing sulfide. This scenario has been investigated in long-term anaerobic experiments in which corrosion was followed by measurement of corrosion potentials and relative corrosion rates obtained from linear polarization resistance measurements. The properties and composition of the corrosion product deposits formed were determined using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis and Raman spectroscopy. Under anaerobic conditions, corrosion rates were lower for freshly polished steel than for preconditioned carbon steel exposed to sulfide, suggesting pre-oxidization of the steel surface prevents passivation in the presence of sulfide. Under these last conditions a non-protective layer of mackinawite forms on the surface and magnetite/maghemite are chemically converted to sulfide and sulfur, leading to a slow increase in corrosion rate.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Electrochemical behavior of supermartensitic stainless steel was discussed in order to evaluate the susceptibility to intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) of supermartensitic stainless steel (SMSS) subjected to girth welding. Electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (EPR) tests were carried out in various compositions of electrolytes for a rich grade SMSS containing Mo and a lean grade SMSS containing no Mo. The aqueous solution of H2SO4 and KSCN mixture is too aggressive for the rich grade SMSS to detect its intergranular corrosion for the grade of steel. For the lean grade SMSS, a rise in current density suggesting intergranular corrosion was observed in the EPR test under a weaker solution in a potential range of –50 to –200 mV vs SCE.

Full text
Abstract:
Experimental data on the solubility and speciation of uranium in hydrothermal solution is required to improve genetic models for the formation of ore deposits, yet very few data of this type have been published. Of particular interest is the oxidation state of the uranium in solution, as conventional wisdom suggests that U is dissolved in the oxidized U(VI) state and precipitated as reduced U(IV) minerals, yet recent experiments have shown ppm-level solubility for U(IV). This study investigated the mobility of reduced U(IV) and oxidized U(VI) in acidic (pH = 2), fluoride- bearing and alkaline (pH = 10), chloride-bearing solutions at 100-200°C and 1 to 15.8 bars (0.1-1.58 MPa). Preliminary data for the mobility of U(IV) in pH 2 fluids with 0.01 m F- show concentrations of 1.76 to 3.92 ppm U at 200°C, indicating that, contrary to common belief, the reduced U(IV) can be transported in solution. We have also conducted experiments on U(VI) solubility in pH 2 fluoride-bearing, and pH 10 chloride-bearing solutions. Uranium concentrations in the F- -bearing experiments ranged from 624 to 1570 ppm (avg. 825 ppm, n = 6) at 100°C, 670 to 1560 ppm (avg. 931 ppm, n = 4) at 150°C, and 3180 to 7550 ppm (avg. 5240, n = 9) at 200°C. In comparison, U concentrations in the Cl- -bearing runs range from 86.1 to 357 ppm (avg. 185 ppm, n = 15) at 200°C. Clearly, oxidized U(VI) is very readily mobilized in hydrothermal fluids. However, the measured concentrations of U(VI) are independent of those of F- or Cl-, suggesting the formation of U oxide or hydroxide species rather than U chlorides or fluorides. These experimental data will be verified and supplemented in future experiments, which will be used to derive the stoichiometry and thermodynamic constants for the dominant uranium species in hydrothermal solutions. The data from this study will then be integrated into a comprehensive genetic model for uranium ore-forming systems.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite the widespread concern with social protection in the field of development, it has had little impact on displacement until very recently. UNHCR has had a Social Protection Unit since 2009, but social protection is barely mentioned in either the Global Compact on Refugees or the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, both agreed in 2018. The period since 2018 has seen a growth of research interest and new policy development. This represents the latest appearance of the humanitarian-development nexus in the field of displacement. This nexus is a long-standing one and is inherent in the term ‘durable solution’ as the only effective end of displacement. Unfortunately, there are few recognised successes, and durable solutions are enjoyed by only a tiny proportion of the growing number of displaced people in the world today. This makes renewed attention to the humanitarian-development nexus all the more urgent. In this paper we review the relationship between a humanitarian response to initial displacement and longer-term development planning, as well as the recent range of research and policy responses in this field. These demonstrate significant potential of social protection. We go on to consider six areas of developing theorisation in order to inform what would constitute success in the expanding inclusion of displaced people in social protection programmes or systems. We conclude with four suggestions where further research in this area can help to determine how and if the potential for social protection to offer more sustainable responses to displacement is being realised.

Abstract:
This factsheet is the product of the students’ work with Procedural Theory in the course Urban Landscape Design during the spring term of 2025. The aim of the assignment is to reflect on and communicate urban landscape design working processes, by studies of sketching processes and creative thinking. The procedural theory or design process is a step-by-step procedure and exploratory method that applies a problem-solving approach to landscape design. According to Murphy (2016), a clearly defined design problem increases the likelihood of a successful resolution, where information intake and knowledge-based thinking during the design process is a critical part in achieving a successful design outcome (Bursic and Altman, 1997; Murphy, 2016). This factsheet shows some examples of the design process, and focuses mainly on reflecting on and describing the role and importance of sketching as an investigative and communicative tool that permeates the students' attempts to describe selected aspects of the design process. In this context, the design process facilitates testing, evaluation and clarification of the creative development (Hoffman 2019). The students' suggestions regarding the design flow underline, to some extent, the sketch as a crucial tool in the search for design and aesthetic solutions. The course Urban Landscape Design (LK0400) is an independent bachelor’s level course focusing on design of urban green spaces, offered at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, and run by the Department of Landscape Architecture, Planning and Management (LTV faculty). The following abstracts and poster presentations present the students’ thoughts and reflections through visualisations and descriptive text, and show attempts to verbalise the design process steps/phases. The assumptions made and described in this factsheet are based on literature studies of procedural theory, as well as on the students’ previous experiences of the design process, and through individual and group reflections and discussions.

Abstract:
The pandemic hit the Colombian economy as hard as other countries. Using a novel Business Pulse Survey, this paper tests the effect of government support and COVID-19 cases on firms performance. A one-standard-deviation increase in government support (in periods in which the pandemics intensity was average) increased the percentage of firms reporting normal operations by 4.8 percent. Political demonstrations in spring 2021, however, reduced the percentage by 13 percent each month they lasted. Firms' financial distress also counters the impact of government support, suggesting the need to ease firms' access to financial markets. Last, we show that investing in digital solutions improved firms' performance but remote work degraded it.

Abstract:
Our paper addresses the question, why systemic approaches have only played a modest role in impact evaluations of in- novation and technology programmes so far and examines possible reasons for this shortcoming, as well as discussing solutions that could be offered to remedy the existing deficit. While the need for a systemic approach to evaluations has been stressed quite often, the methodological challenges and reasons for the lack of systemic evaluations in practice have to our knowledge not yet been addressed in a systematical manner. This contribution is conceptual in nature and based on a review of the research literature on the use of systemic approaches in evaluations of the impact of R&amp;I policy programmes. The analysis shows that the use of systemic methods encounters both epistemological and institutional obstacles. Suggestions are made for the further development of the methodological repertoire by including suitable systemic approaches.
