Abstract:
Solvent vapor annealing is as an effective and versatile alternative to thermal annealing to equilibrate and control the assembly of polymer chains in thin films. Here, we present scientific and practical aspects of the solvent vapor annealing method, including the discussion of such factors as non-equilibrium conformational states and chain dynamics in thin films in the presence of solvent. Homopolymer and block copolymer films have been used in model studies to evaluate the robustness and the reproducibility of the solvent vapor processing, as well as to assess polymer-solvent interactions u

We demonstrate the structural reorganization of microdomain arrays toward the perpendicular orientation of lamellar morphology in high-molecular-weight PS-b-PMMA films using a combinational approach by solvent-vapor and sequential thermal annealing processes. Solvent annealing with a PMMA-selective acetone vapor induced a cylindrical morphology. However, the sequential thermal annealing of block copolymer (BCP) films led to structural reorganization to an equilibrium lamellar morphology, where the lamellar microdomains were oriented to normal to the film surface. This technique suggests an eff

In this dissertation, we will study solvent-vapor induced spherulitic growth in multicomponent thin films modeled as prestressed elastic solids. The interface between the crystalline phase and the amorphous phase will be treated as an evolving thermodynamic system and no diffusion of any component will be considered. The dissertation is divided into three parts. In Part I we will determine necessary conditions of thermodynamic equilibrium between the two solid phases, the inter- face, and the vapor. In Part II we will derive the thermodynamic driving force for spherulitic growth in multicompon

The swelling of P4VP perpendicular cylinders (C⊥) in chloroform, a non-selective solvent vapor, leads to the reorientation to in-plane cylinders through a disordered state in a particular kinetic pathway in the phase diagram upon drying. This work presents enhanced composite joints that support both electrical or thermal transport in electronic packages. The joints are sequentially formed by applying a nanoparticle suspension, evaporating a solvent, self-assembling of nanoparticles by capillary bridging, and the formation of so called “necks” between micron-sized features. This sequence is used to either form low temperature electrical joints under copper pillars or enhanced percolating thermal underfills with areal contacts between filler particles of the composite. The report discusses processing aspects of the capillary bri
