AbstractIn exploring the difficulties experienced by the traditionally politically uncentralised Somalis in establishing a stable and effective state, based on their ethnicity, this article compares ethnicity, nationalism and lineage identity. In this case, ethnicity and nationalism are local products, influenced but not created by the colonial experience. They have had to contend with the intractable force of segmentary lineage identity, which has proved extremely difficult to adapt and accommodate to the requirements of modern statehood. Older and younger adults in long-term care, particularly those with dementia or chronic physical conditions, often experience social isolation and cognitive under-stimulation due to limited opportunities for meaningful engagement. Reminiscence therapy is a highly effective approach to providing this stimulation, enhancing emotional well-being, memory recall, and social interaction. However, its implementation in care settings often depends on staff and family availability and resources, making individualised engagement inconsistent. AI-driven agents offer a potential solution by providing adap

Abstract:
Cash transfers are an increasingly popular development intervention. Many studies have focused on the positive impacts of cash transfers on the socio-economic welfare of recipients. Meanwhile, relatively little has been covered regarding when, and under what conditions, cash transfers can have potentially transformative social effects in improving inclusive governance, local development and state-society relations. This study considers whether cash transfers may enable recipients to make informal tax contributions to local community development projects in south-central Somalia.

The global pandemic has brought renewed attention toward the everyday challenges in informal settlements. COVID-19 reminds us that southern urban life is rooted in ‘collective’ experiences where toilets and kitchens are shared by multiple families; where the categories of work and home, private and public space overlap; and where the majority live in vulnerable conditions. Despite these challenges, some of the most innovative and collective responses to COVID-19 have emerged from these areas. While informal settlements did face a host of risks and vulnerabilities during the pandemic, local res
