Braude, Hillel. Radical Somatics. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252039409.003.0007.

Abstract:
In this chapter, the author discusses the radical transformative power of somatics and the ways that somatics practice directly affects the precognitive sensibility of the Other; he calls this transformation of the Other “somatics affecting.” Drawing on his current research that integrates approaches to medicine and somatics in the emergent field of neuroethics, the author explains how somatics, especially through kinesthesia, provides a means of bridging the distinct realms of phenomenology and neuroscience. To this end, he analyzes the transformative qualities of somatics in terms of neurobiology and phenomenology, and especially the radical idea adapted from the phenomenological writings of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Emmanuel Levinas. He elucidates the relation between somatics and phenomenonology as disciplines of subjectivity by linking them to the natural sciences. Finally, he illustrates the transformative potential of somatics affecting through a comparison with the social neuroscience understanding of empathy.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses somatic movement arts and provides an extensive definition of movement-based somatic practices. The chapter describes somatics as a kinesthetic field for study and cultivation of movement arts, including the author’s experiences and conceptualizations of somatic methods in dance performance. The chapterbegins with a thumbnail sketch of somatic history, noting how somatic inquiry was buoyed by growth of existentialism and phenomenology, before considering the relationship of somatics to affect attunement, kinesthesia, and matching through touch. It also explains somatic methods, including those based on movement, and possible selves; the somatic affects of butoh; haptic perception, clearing processes, and repatterning; and the ways that soma promotes healing. The chapter concludes by outlining some Shin Somatics movement-based experiences and methods that the author and her colleagues explore with students and clients.

Abstract:
In this chapter, the author reflects on the ways that living Shin has enriched her work as a university professor, professional dancer, choreographer, and human being. She first talks about her history in somatic modalities of Ideokinesis, Laban, Keleman, and Hanna Somatics, along with their relation to Shin Somatics and how this work has benefited her professionally and personally. She then describes her applications of somatic knowledge to dance pedagogy, creating choreography, and the teaching and practice of yoga, healing, and wellness at Eastwest Somatics Institute. She also discusses her personal transformative somatic experiences and concludes by sharing key findings and insights that ground her in living Shin.

Full text
Abstract:
The Natural Body in Somatics Dance Training examines the development of Somatics as it has been adopted by successive generations of practitioners since its early beginnings in the 1950s. The book elucidates the ways in which Somatics has engaged globally with some of the various locales in which it was developed and practiced, in terms of its relationships both to other dance training programs in that region and to larger aesthetic and political values. The book thereby offers a cogent analysis of how training regimens can inculcate an embodied politics as they guide and shape the experience of bodily sensation, construct forms of reflexive evaluation of bodily action, and summon bodies into relationship with one another. Throughout, it focuses on how the notion of a natural body was implemented and developed in Somatics pedagogy.

Abstract:
This chapter examines consciousness, or more accurately “extending whole body consciousness,” as the core purpose of somatic studies. It first considers the notion of ethereality in dance, noting how contrasting subtle ethereal movement would be solid strongly delineated movement, restrained and earthy; some of these strong qualities are found in the invigorating stamping dances of India and Africa. The chapter goes on to discuss somatics in terms of somatic affectivity and phenomenological awareness, arguing that how self and community are cultivated makes a difference in somatic contexts for performance; the important role of the teacher in transformational dance somatics, insisting that she and her consciousness are a living part of it; dualism from a gender perspective; and the use of phenomenology in terms of its critique of dualist theories of body and mind.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter, the author examines kinesthetic correspondence and matching in Contact Unwinding, a Shin Somatics dance process which employs movement-based teaching through touch and is performed in an improvisational dance context. Contact Unwinding invites the inner self to instinctively express itself outwardly in a spontaneous unfolding of intuitive movement or dance, and in the process interweaves dance and somatics, connecting us intimately with our moving or dancing body. The discussion draws on the author’s personal experiences as a somatic educator and as a mover, combined with reflections from undergraduate dance students at Bath Spa University in the UK and students in somatic workshops. She highlights the educational and therapeutic aspects of Contact Unwinding, focusing on how knowledge is obtained through different modes of learning and especially how Contact Unwinding invites us to learn through experiencing, discovering, and communicating.
