Abstract:
Thesis (MS en S)--Stellenbosch University, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The urban designer works within an environment characterized by constraints. Control mechanisms are part of these constraints. They were created out of necessity because the control of the urban environment became strained as cities grew in size. In the beginning control mechanisms regulated the urban environment to create better public safety. This objective evolved to include aesthetics and sustainability of the environment. Controls, however, tended to become standardized and were often blindly applied irrespective of changed circumstances and contexts. Control mechanisms include inter alia height, density, bulk, and aesthetic controls, which can be applied to regulate form, space and behavioural or activity patterns. These control mechanisms generally embrace a system of codes embodied in legislation enforceable in law. Urban designers should realize and take full advantage of the potential of the law as an urban design control element. This study examines the nature of control mechanisms as applied to town planning in general and urban design in particular and their efficacy in achieving and maintaining a range of human and social objectives. To this end, attention is paid to examining historical precedent, examples reflecting different cultures and approaches and resultant urban forms. On the basis of the aforementioned this study aims to identify a range of urban design principles and to propose suggestions as to how control mechanisms as part of a system of law can best be applied. A case study of central business district sites in Durbanville, Western Cape is researched.

Abstract:
Background: Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH) and its complications contribute to a significant burden of disease both in developed and developing countries of the world. Unfortunately, PIH has no cure, the delivery of the baby and the placenta is required. Early detection of pregnancy induced hypertension and close monitoring remains the key to achieving a favourable outcome. This study aimed to determine the quality of care given to women diagnosed with Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH) within a care pathway spanning peri-urban primary and urban secondary level facilities. Methods: This was a retrospective clinical audit of medical records of patients diagnosed with PIH. It was conducted in the Wesfleur -New Somerset Hospital drainage area, using a locally validated data extraction tool, based on the South African Maternal Care Guidelines. The data were analyzed using descriptive methods to report on the frequencies and proportions of the variables, and analyzed to report on statistical significance of correlations. Results: The prevalence rate of pregnancy induced hypertension in this study was 12%. The overall pregnancy induced hypertension complication prevalence in the study for mothers was 7.7%, and that of babies was 30.7%. Facilities generally performed well according to the audit indicators detailing structures and processes that should be followed, as outlined by the standard guidelines used. Two process indicators were correlated with adverse outcomes: 66.1% of patients were appropriately referred, resulting in statistically better foetal outcomes (p = 0.059); and those who booked early in the pregnancy had less PIH-induced complications than those who booked late (p = 0.012) Conclusion: This study followed a standardized audit methodology and found that the quality of care in this peri-urban area is of a good standard and identified areas for quality improvement and further enquiry to ensure continual improvement in maternal and fetal outcomes.

The increasing evidence of chemicals of emerging concern (CECs) in water bodies is causing major concern around the world because of their toxicological effects upon humans and aquatic organisms. The release of wastewater to the aquatic environment is most likely to introduce some trace levels of organic contaminants, some of which may be toxic, carcinogenic, or endocrine disruptors, as well as, persistent in the environment. These compounds are often persistent but not regularly monitored because they are mostly still excluded from environmental legislation. Their fate and persistence in the environment are not well understood.

Doreen, Nchang. "Language, migration and identity: Exploring the trajectories and linguistic identities of some African migrants in Cape Town, South Africa." University of the Western Cape, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/6235.

Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD (Linguistics, Language and Communication)
This study is an exploration of the different trajectories of a selected number of African migrants into and around South Africa, focusing on the effects of these different trajectories on their language use patterns and linguistic identities. Informed by the interpretive paradigm, the study was done in order to show the effects of space, migration, trauma and ethno-linguistic tensions such as xenophobia on people's language use. Ultimately, the study is an analysis of a number of migrants' language biographies. South Africa is a multilingual and multicultural country with eleven official languages and many migrant languages, resulting from the flow of people from other countries, especially from highly multilingual and multicultural African countries, to this major economic hub on the continent. New trends in globalization witnessed across the globe and socio-political and economic instabilities witnessed in some countries, have prompted some of these migrants to move to South Africa, they see as more economically and politically stable than their home countries. Among those who have migrated to Cape Town South Africa are Cameroonian migrants whose living conditions will never be the same again. The study was conducted because there is a need for a better understanding of the strategies multilingual people employ to negotiate language and cultural differences in a globalized world, often under very trying conditions (as is the case in South Africa). The study critically explores the language biographies, the full repertoire of communicative resources of selected Cameroonian migrants in Cape Town as well as making visible their polylingual repertoires and associated attitudes and beliefs in the research domain. The theoretical framework for this study is shaped by theories of late modernity with reference to traditional sociolinguistics, globalization and migration. A multi-dimensional analytical approach is employed in this study, incorporating Discourse Analysis (DA), Narrative Analysis (NA), Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), Thematic Analysis (TA) and Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) that incorporates the Multimodal Biographic Approach.

Abstract:
Background: - Living wills have long been associated with end-of- life care. This study explored the promotion and use of living wills amongst general practitioners and frail care nursing coordinators directly involved in the care of the elderly in Howick, Kwa-Zulu Natal. The study also explored their views regarding the proforma living will disseminated by the Living Will Society. Participants: - Seven general practitioners and three frail care nursing coordinators, making ten in total. Design: - Qualitative in-depth interviews and analysis, using the Framework method. Results:- Both doctors and nursing staff understood the concept of living wills and acknowledged their varied benefits to patient, family and staff. They were concerned about the lack of legal status. They felt that the proforma document from the Living Will Society was simple and clear. Despite identifying the low level of use of living wills, they felt that third party organisations and individuals should promote living wills Conclusion: - GPs and frail care nurse coordinators were knowledgeable of living wills in general and the Living Will Society proforma document in particular. They valued the contribution that living wills can make in the care of the elderly, benefitting patients, their families, health care workers and even the health system. They also valued the proforma living will document from the Living Will Society for its clarity and simplicity. However, both GPs and frail care nursing coordinators viewed the living will process as patient- driven and their main role was as custodians and not advocates of the living will.

Full text
Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 191-196.
This thesis stemmed initially from the author's desire to investigate the phytoplankton assemblages of the freshwater vleis of the Cape Peninsula. This aspect of the limnology of the Cape Flats vleis has received only scant attention by other researchers (over 40 years ago), and no comprehensive studies of their seasonal phytoplankton periodicities had been attempted. The paucity of information regarding the phytoplankton of the winter-rainfall, Mediterranean-climatic systems of the Cape Peninsula was found to not only be limited to South Africa. The literature survey undertaken for this study (Chapter 1) revealed•a general lack of information for shallow, nutrient-enriched, coastal systems, with virtually no data available for coastal systems in winter-rainfall regions. The thesis includes a description not only of the phytoplankton, but also of the limnology of each vlei as they are currently understood; this information is synthesized in Chapters 2 and 3 and collates all the available information accumulated by the Cape Town City Council (CCC) since it commenced monitoring of both vleis almost a decade ago. These chapters also contain details of the available bibliography for each system and form the first compilation of the available data for these waters. The inclusion of these chapters enabled comparisons to be made between the water chemistry regimes during the current study with those prevailing during earlier years. During the course of the study the author came across other pertinent aspects of each vlei which necessitated sub-investigations. The details of these are also included in the limnological chapters.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2005
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Strong scientific evidence suggests that global warming is altering the world's climate and that this phenomenon is being accelerated as a result of human activities. Climate change is affecting weather patterns and, in addition to demonstrated sea-level rise, these in turn have and are likely to continue having significant, mostly negative, impacts - both economic and loss of life - on governments, industries and people. Ocean levels rose between 15 and 20 centimeters in the 20th century, mostly as a result of melting glaciers and thermal expansion of the oceans. The International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2001a: 16) in its 2001 estimate suggests a potential rise in average sea level from nine to 88 centimeters from 1990 to 2100. Areas of risk in the City of Cape Town are residential property, infrastructure and beaches in low-lying areas. These areas are likely to be impacted as a result of increasing sea-level rise and increasing severity and frequency of storms. This study seeks to • demonstrate that sufficient evidence exists to compel decision-makers in the City of Cape Town that climate change and the impacts of sea-level rise and increasing frequency and severity of storms need to be considered in development planning; and • test cost-benefit analysis (through climate change impact analysis) as a tool for decision-makers to consider adaptation measures, using Langebaan as a case study. The research comprises a comprehensive literature study of the impacts of climate change, particularly with respect to coastal areas. A case study based on the eroding beaches at Langebaan is used to test cost-benefit analysis as a tool for decision-makers in dealing with the impacts. Despite the uncertainties associated with the impacts of climate change (time, place and extent) the issues of sea-level rise and severe storms seem to warrant further investigation, especially at a local level. This study provides local context to a global problem and makes recommendations for decision-makers in the City of Cape Town. Climate impact analysis (incorporating cost-benefit analysis) is suggested as a tool to quantify avoided damages at vulnerable coastal sites in the City of Cape Town. In conclusion, the impacts of climate change are a complex and multivariate problem. However, there are a number of identified vulnerable areas along the coastline of the City of Cape Town and using tools like climate impact analysis and cost-benefit analysis may assist in identifying, costing and managing these economic risks before the problem becomes unmanageable - a case for quantifying avoided damage.

Abstract:
Magister Bibliothecologiae - MBibl
The purpose of this study is to investigate responses to New Africa Book’s Siyagruva Series among six enthusiastic teenage readers (ages 10 -16), at Eersterivier Public Library in Cape Town. The series aims to provide a series of popular books accessible to second language English readers. The question that underlies the research project is whether they fill a gap in the South African teenage reading market. There are several motives behind this study besides the fact that South African learners read very little: • The need to investigate reading preferences and choices among South African teenagers • To find out factors which affect reading choices of South African teenagers • The need to encourage reading culture in South Africa. The qualitative case study of reading response tries to answer the research question through face to face interviews with selected readers. The nature of the small-scale case study means that it can make no generalised statements about all South African teenagers. It explores the views of only six teenagers. The study finds that the books do fulfil a need in the readers to read about “real” issues and situations that reflect their own lives. The participants like the idea of a series of books with the same characters whom they like and identify with. They find the appearance and style of the books appealing. They now wish to read all the books in the series. This investigation will be of interest to various role players like: • publishers, who wish to be in touch with their teenage market • booksellers, who wish to stock saleable books • librarians and school educators who wish to provide young people with appealing books • the Centre for the Book and NGOs who wish to promote a reading culture.

Bellingham, Roger Alan. "Demographic, economic and social change in the later eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries : some conclusions from a study of four towns in Yorkshire from circa 1750 to circa 1830." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/31041.

Abstract:
During the period from c. 1750 to c1830 Easingwold, Market Weighton, Pocklington and Selby were small market towns, but all had wider functions and their economic fortunes were closely linked to changes in the regional transport systems. The way each town developed was in part due to their location but was also influenced by the actions of those who lived there. Thus those in charge at Selby used the transit traffic generated by the Selby canal as a foundation upon which to built the town's prosperity, in particular by constructing a bridge over the Ouse in 1792, despite strong opposition. The survival of the 1788 Window and Assessed Taxes return for Selby, which included the short lived Shop Tax, permits an unusual insight into the life of the town at that date. Besides throwing considerable light on the commercial activities in the town, the data has wider implications regarding the general provision of shops at that time. Between 1777 and 1812 the parish registers of many Yorkshire parishes, among them Easingwold, Pocklington and Selby, were in the extended 'Dade' format. Those for Selby are of an unusually high quality. These useful registers can provide demographic data that is in many ways superior to the data used by E.A. Wrigley and others in English Population History from family reconstitution 1580-1837 (1997). The view of those authors is that the demographic behaviour of migrants did not differ from those who did not migrate. The Selby data raises serious doubts so to whether this is a valid assumption. The research so far undertaken suggests that further research using Yorkshire Dade registers may show that the overall demographic experience of Yorkshire between 1777 and 1812 was different to that of England as a whole, as portrayed in English Population History.

Abstract:
This study examines the value of travellers’ written records of their trips with specific reference to the journals of five French travellers who visited Scotland between 1780 and 1830. The thesis argues that they contain material which demonstrates the merit of journals as historical documents. The themes chosen for scrutiny, life in the rural areas, agriculture, industry, transport and towns, are examined and assessed across the journals and against the social, economic and literary scene in France and Scotland. Through the evidence presented in the journals, the thesis explores aspects of the tourist experience of the Enlightenment and post -Enlightenment periods. The viewpoint of knowledgeable French Anglophiles and their receptiveness to Scottish influences, grants a perspective of the position of France in the economic, social and power structure of Europe and the New World vis-à-vis Scotland. The thesis adopts a narrow, focussed analysis of the journals which is compared and contrasted to a broad brush approach adopted in other studies.

On account of the significance and initiative of Physical Fitness on the physical and psychological well-being of individuals, and based on the Principles and Labs for Fitness and Wellness, this study discussed the Smoking Behavior, Academic Achievement and Physical Fitness of elementary school senior graders in some town of Taipei City, as well as the differences and related factors. The samples of this study were 520 elementary school sixth graders employed by stratified random sampling method from 3 elementary schools. The self-developed Survey on the sports participation and smoking behavior of elementary school senior graders in some town of Taipei City was used for data collection. The data were analyzed with t-test of Independent Samples, One-Way ANOVA, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation, Multiple Regression Analysis, in order to understand the smoking behavior,.academic achievement and physical fitness of elementary school senior graders in some town of Taipei City, as well as the differences and related factors. The results are as below: 1.19.6% senior graders had smoke experiences. 7.1%, 5.9%, 4.1%, 2.4% senior graders stated having their first cigarette at age of 12-13, 10-11,8-9 and before 8,.respectively. The smoking reasons were curiosity (10%), elder’s abet (4.3%), friends’ invite (3.3%), and bad mood (2.0%). 2. There are only 48% senior graders doing exercise(excluding Physical Education) at least three times per week , at least 30 minutes each time. The highest ratio of exercise duration is「40~80 minutes」. 3. Differences in smoking behavior include: (1) Those with worse midterm achievement smoke more frequently. (2) Those with lower amount of exercises smoke more frequently. 4. Differences in physical fitness include: (1) As a whole, the health-related physical fitness ,male are superior to female. (2) Those with better midterm achievement have better physical fitness (3) Those with higher amount of exercises have better physical fitness . (4) Those whose parents have higher social-economic statuses have better physical fitness . 5. Differences in academic achievement include: (1) Those with better midterm achievement have better academic achievement . (2) Those with higher amount of exercises have better academic achievement. (3).Those whose parents have higher social-economic statuses have better academic achievement . 6..Senior graders’ physical fitness and academic achievement have shown an inverse proportional effect on smoking behavior. 7. Senior graders’ physical fitness and academic achievement have shown a positive correlation. 8..The research show the significant predicted variables of academic achievement are smoking behavior, physical fitness and gender. According these results, some suggestions were given.

The question that underlies the research project is whether they fill a gap in the South African teenage reading market. There are several motives behind this study besides the fact that South African learners read very little:

&bull
The need to investigate reading preferences and choices among South African teenagers
&bull
To find out factors which affect reading choices of South African teenagers
&bull
The need to encourage reading culture in South Africa.

The qualitative case study of reading response tries to answer the research question through face to face interviews with selected readers. The nature of the small-scale case study means that it can make no generalised statements about all South African teenagers. It explores the views of only six teenagers.
