Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the history of Islam in China during the T'ang and Song periods, based on Chinese and Arabic sources. After investigation of the early contacts between the Muslims and China during the T'ang era (618--907), the thesis analyzes the reasons for the spread of Islam into southern Chinese Turkistan. The thesis then goes on to examine the Muslim commercial activities in Song China (960--1276). This study will lead to the conclusion that Muslim military campaigns in Chinese Turkistan and Muslim merchants' commercial activities in China's south-east coastal provinces during the T'ang and Song dynasties contributed to the early spread and development of Islam in China.

Abstract:
This thesis considers the question of heresy as it relates to the context of Song dynasty China (960-1279 C.E.). It analyzes the ways in which the Song Imperial authorities constructed a religious orthodoxy and defended it through the legal system. It will deal with how heresy is defined in a multi-religious polity without a unified church, such as the Catholic Church of the medieval West. This thesis will argue that a definition of heresy derived from western heresiology is a valid analytical model and that Song China had a religious orthodoxy constructed around the person of the Emperor.

Sun, Jinjing, and 孫今涇. "Neo-Confucians on the differentiation between living people and ghosts = Song dai li xue jia ren gui zhi bian." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/206661.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation studies the discussions on ghosts by the Neo-Confucians of the Song Dynasty, in particular Zhu Xi and Chen Chun. According to these thinkers, Gui (the ghost) refers to the deceased and represents the fading away of Qi (materials), and it is also part of the ancestor worship. Based on the typically Neo-Confucian interpretation of Li (principles) and Qi (materials), this dissertation demonstrates how Zhu and Chen explicated the idea of “Li persist on even though Qi fade away” by an articulation of their understanding of the ghost. The thesis consists of five chapters. The introduction summarizes previous works concerning Neo-Confucians’ discussion on Gui. It also briefly explains why the idea of Li and Qi is significant to the distinction between living people and ghosts as seen by Neo-Confucian thinkers. The definition of “Neo-Confucians” is briefly explained at the beginning of the introduction. Chapter one presents how Neo-Confucians apply the Qi theory to Gui, and their idea of an appropriate worship as intimately related to Qi, yet with its rationality lying with Li of human relations. Chapter two analyzes the Neo-Confucian idea of li gui (haunting ghosts) which is differentiated from the ghost in the ancestry worship system. For Neo-Confucians, li gui fail to understand the appropriate relation between Qi and Li and try to reject the fading away of Qi after death. In Chapter three, it is examined that Zhu Xi and Chen Chun’s opinion that living people play a role in the ghosts’ haunting because of their lack of knowledge of either Qi or Li, and suggest that they become the human form of “haunting ghosts” because of such a failure in understanding. In conclusion, the thesis suggests that the right way to live out the true potentiality of human beings is to accept the limitation of Qi but try to grasp the eternal Li through the observation of the movements of Qi.

Abstract:
Even though there has been no lack of scholarly attention to Chinese epistolary texts as a source of information, discussions of the functions and practices of letter writing in imperial China are very limited. This thesis deals with how elites in Song dynasty (960-1279) China exchanged personal and political information by writing and sending letters to each other, and how the genre of letters functioned in its various forms throughout the socially transformative and culturally active period. Through contextualizing epistolary material - such as letters in manuscript and print form, letter collections, and epistolary manuals, as well as sources in other genres that describe letter writing practices - I explore the multifaceted uses of letter writing for literati officials. The study provides a systematic view of the functions of Song letter writing in political, social, and cultural realms by investigating its complex practices. Using letters in several sub-genres by important literati figures such as Mi Fu, Li Gang, and Sun Di, it illustrates the main aspects of letter writing, including format, rhetoric, topical content, and handwriting. In view of the roles played by letters exchanged among Song scholars, this research on literati correspondence provides a window on how interpersonal relationships were conducted by written exchanges during that period. It also sheds light on how epistolary culture was transformed by the literati community during one of the key periods of Chinese civilization. These insights will contribute to the research of Chinese literati culture and related fields, such as the social history of middle period China, and will also be useful for comparing China's epistolary culture with the world's other letter writing traditions.

Dryburgh, Marjorie E. "Song Zheyuan, the Nanjing government and the north china question in Sino-Japanese relations, 1935-1937." Thesis, Durham University, 1993. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/5777/.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this study is the relationship between the Chinese central government and Song Zheyuan, the key provincial leader of North China, in the period immediately preceding the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the impact of tensions in that relationship on Japan policy. The most urgent task confronting the Chinese government in the late 1930s was to secure an equitable and formally-negotiated settlement of outstanding questions with the Tokyo government. The efforts of the Nanjing government are examined in terms of the divisions within the government and in the context of the public debate on Japan policy which was extended to cover fundamental questions of the regime's diplomatic maturity and the function of diplomacy in the new state. However, the Sino-Japanese question was not purely a diplomatic issue. Tensions between central and northern regional authorities and continuing provincial independence combined with persistent political and military interventions by the Japanese armies in North China to undermine the initiatives of the centre as the lack of an effective central Japan policy eroded regional confidence in the centre. By 1935 Nanjing's control in the North was breaking down and the initiative in contacts with Japan in the region passed to provincial leaders: Song Zheyuan emerged as a key figure in relations with Japan. In 1935-7 Song occupied all the significant political and military offices in Hebei and Chaha'er provinces. Nanjing was entirely dependent on Song for the defence of the North, yet Song remained ambivalent towards Nanjing and Japan, berating the central authorities for their 'abandonment' of the North while maintaining close contact with the Japanese military. While he had no formal role in foreign affairs, his informal function in the relations with Japan demands closer attention.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, I present new results based on 2D multi-channel seismic data of the Song Hong-Yinggehai and Qiongdongnan Basins, geochemical data derived from ODP Site 1148, and sediment provenance analysis of modern sediment and Cenozoic sedimentary rocks collected along the Red River system. The Song Hong-Yinggehai Basin started opening after ~50 Ma but strong subsidence, triggered by motion on the Red River Fault, only occurred after ~34 Ma.  This process was followed by thermal subsidence after ~21 Ma.  In contrast, the formation the Qiongdongnan Basin is believed to be related to the development of the northern rifted margin of the South China Sea. Sediment budget estimates, coupled with geochemical data show that chemical weathering gradually decreased after ~25 Ma, while physical erosion became stronger.  These data also suggest a period of the monsoon enhancement (~15-10 Ma), although with a likely initial East Asia monsoon strengthening ~23 Ma. U-Pb zircon dating coupled with Hf isotopes, muscovite Ar-Ar dating, bulk sediment Nd isotope and heavy mineral analysis allow me to draw the following points: (1) if the headwaters of the modern Yangtze, Mekong and Salween Rivers were ever connected to the palaeo-Red River then they were disconnected from the Red River no later than the Middle Miocene; (2) The palaeo-Red River flowed northeast of the Day Nui Con Voi during the Miocene and did not flow via Lao Cai and southwest of the range as it is observed today; (3) the Yangtze Craton and the Songpan Garze Block are the most important source regions to the Red River; (4) apart from the main Red River trunk, the Lo River is the most important sediment contributor to the Red River system, while the Da River is only a minor contributor.
