Wolff, D. "Spot the odd song out : similarity model adaptation and analysis using relative human ratings." Thesis, City University London, 2014. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/5916/.

Full text
Abstract:
Understanding how listeners relate and compare pieces of music is a fundamental challenge in music research as well as for commercial applications: Today’s large-scale applications for music recommendation and exploration utilise various models for similarity prediction to satisfy users’ expectations. Perceived similarity is specific to the individual and influenced by a number of factors such as cultural background and age. Thus, adapting a generic model to human similarity data is useful for personalisation and can help to better understand such differences. This thesis presents new and state-of-the-art machine learning techniques for modelling music similarity and their first evaluation on relative music similarity data. We expand the scope for future research with methods for similarity data collection and a new dataset. In particular, our models are evaluated on their ability to “spot the odd song out” of three given songs. While a few methods are readily available, others had to be adapted for their first application to such data. We explore the potential for learning generalisable similarity measures, presenting algorithms for metrics and neural networks. A generic modelling workflow is presented and implemented. We report the first evaluation of the methods on the MagnaTagATune dataset showing learning is possible and pointing out particularities of algorithms and feature types. The best results with up to 74% performance on test sets were achieved with a combination of acoustic and cultural features, but model training proved most powerful when only acoustic information is available. To assess the generalisability of the findings, we provide a first systematic analysis of the dataset itself. We also identify a bias in standard sampling methods for cross-validation with similarity data and present a new method for unbiased evaluation, providing use cases for the different validation strategies. Furthermore, we present an online game that collects a new similarity dataset, including participant attributes such as age, location, language and music background. It is based on our extensible framework which manages storage of participant input, context information as well as selection of presented samples. The collected data enables a more specific adaptation of music similarity by including user attributes into similarity models. Distinct similarity models are learnt from geographically defined user groups in a first experiment towards the more complex task of culture-aware similarity modelling. In order to improve training of the specific models on small datasets, we implement the concept of transfer learning for music similarity models.

The change in the base of the population pyramid shows that the population is aging, deserving attention and importance in our society in many ways. Considering the aspect of health, aging increases the chances of the emergence of chronic and degenerative diseases, loss of functional and social roles, which may impact on the quality of life of these subjects. In this aspect of health, we emphasize the importance of sleep in older adult life, from a sample of elderly women who had changes in sleep patterns, intending with this study, we study the physiological aspect of sleep in his old age, diseases and disorders associated most commonly found in older people and the impact that sleep may cause the quality of life in this population. The study is based on a literature review, exploratory, descriptive and reflective, in which articles were selected from data source SciELO, PubMed, and Lilacs, who discussed the phenomenon of sleep in old age, from 1995 to 2011. Sleep in aging has its own peculiarities in this age group, with decrease in stages 3 and 4, representing one of the most frequent complaints among the elderly, worse quality when associated with clinical conditions such as Sleep Apnea, Obesity, Diabetes Mellitus, Anxiety and Depression , medication use, social conditions such as institutionalization, bereavement and widowhood. The poor quality of sleep adversely affects the quality of life for seniors, but we can not generalize that elderly people sleep badly, because active seniors healthy and have no complaints or sleep disorders. Therefore, it is necessary that professionals involved in care of the elderly, given the condition of sleep in old age

Dunnett, Ninian. "Same old song : an exploration of originality in popular music history." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/17949.

Full text
Abstract:
Originality is an important social and cultural value. In pop music its influence is comprehensive: it shapes the economics of an industry through copyright law, and the temperament of musical culture through its place as keystone of the prevailing Romantic tradition. The concept extends beyond issues of artistic and technical innovation: a point of origin is fundamental to the stories we tell about pop. What these stories tell us about ourselves and the way we use music, though, may be more complex than the orthodoxy allows; while the moderns from Eliot and Frye through Barthes and Foucault have sliced and diced originality in text, its interrogation in popular music is overdue. This study seeks to address the social and cultural context, the implications for individual identity and the issues of creative intention, status, popularity and profitability that come into play at those moments when the cultural honours of “originality” are conferred. Working from archival and textual resources, the research explores the entry of “black music” into pop culture with the Fisk University Jubilee Singers, who can be seen both as the source of several cultural streams which remain influential in popular music, and as the source of a popular mythology which has become detached from historical fact. It then proceeds to three case studies. The problem of what it means to start something new is developed in the story of Elvis Presley and the foundation myth of rock & roll. The professional use of originality is interrogated in the work of the Beatles, a foursome with a strong claim to be the greatest plagiarists, if not the greatest originators in pop. And the artistic idea of originality and its contingencies are addressed through the case of Lou Reed and the changing status of his album Metal Machine Music. A final chapter assesses the conclusions which can be made from these explorations, and the implications for future research.

Abstract:
The anonymous Old English translation of the Admonitio ad Filium Spiritualem ascribed to St. Basil has hitherto been accessible only in the 1848/9 editions ofHW. Norman and the 1974 unpublished PhD dissertation ofL.E. Mueller. This edition takes into consideration the work of both editors, but pursues the relevant issues somethat further, beginning with the ascription of the work to iElfric. I use the single authoritative Hatton Ms 76A as the basis for my text; the critical introduction includes sections on the history of this manuscript and its two transcriptions, its possible relation to known Latin manuscripts of the text, and its orthography, punctuation and accent marks, and a full list of the annotations in the tremulous hand of the Worcester scribe. In considering the transmission of the text to iElfric, I include sections on St. Basil's status as a monastic legislator to explain the text's currency, the penitential tradition and the place of the Admonitio within the iElfiic canon. I conclude with analysis of the Old English text, its linguistic focus, style and structure, arguing that the Old English text may not be as incomplete as has previously been thought. To accompany my text I provide textual notes, a full commentary, which includes identification of the sources of some concepts not found in the Latin, and a Glossary. As Appendices I include a transcription of a part of Bodley Ms 800, the closest available version of iElfric's source, a provisional handlist of manuscripts in British libraries and elsewhere containing part or all of the Latin Admonitio, and a list of the accent marks on Hatton Ms 76A, ff 55-67v, together with a chart to show their line-distribution.

Juma, Dorcas Chebet. "Encountering the female voice in the Song of Songs : reading the Song of Songs for the dignity of Kenyan women." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/95821.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates one of the central aspects of a Kenyan woman’s identity, namely the notion of sexuality, which unfortunately also underlies numerous socio-economic and developmental challenges currently confronting Kenyan women. The research shows that in Kenya, patriarchal ideologies are used to control the sexuality of women in the name of ‘our culture’. Thus, it is and has been difficult for many Kenyan women to live with dignity as beings equally created in the image and likeness of God. The study, therefore, sought to identify, expose, criticize, destabilize and to deconstruct patriarchal ideologies that deny Kenyan women the right to live with dignity. Patriarchal ideologies that have been used to mute the voices of Kenyan women on matters of sex and sexuality are challenged by introducing the voices of Kenyan women. The latter is done with reference to poetry that reflects the voices and experiences of Kenyan women as a means of expressing who they really are in the midst of a society that silences them. It is shown that, by means of poetry, the full power and energy of these women may be mobilized. Moreover, the voices and experiences of Kenyan women offer a contextual re-reading of the Song of Songs for their dignity. The study presents the female voice in the Song of Songs (a text from a male pen) as responding in a new way to the patriarchal Old Testament society on matters of sex and sexuality. In the process, a twofold strategy is proposed with which negative perceptions of the sexuality of women in the worldview of Kenya may be addressed: First, this study proposes that it is important to purposefully steer conversations regarding issues of sex and sexuality. The latter is done in the conviction that this is one way of creating a platform for addressing other gender-based injustices that deny Kenyan women the right to live with dignity. Second, by focusing on Kenyan poetry, as well as on the female voice in the Song of Songs, there is a possibility of reconstructing positive aspects of the sexuality of Kenyan women, which may allow them to live with dignity. To achieve the aim of this study, to re-read the Song of Songs for the dignity of Kenyan women, an African Women’s Theological approach is used within the broader context of feminist and womanist approaches to the Song. Through an African Women’s approach to the Song of Songs, the study asks how the female voice that spoke boldly in the patriarchal setting of the Old Testament can also be liberating in the Kenyan patriarchal setting. The female voice in Song of Songs presents issues of sex and sexuality in a new way. As such, it is proposed that the latter voice, read through the hermeneutical lens of Kenyan women’s poetry or poetry on Kenyan women, has the potential to inform and therefore to transform the patriarchal setting of the Kenyan society. It is only if Kenyan women are empowered to negotiate safe sex and to express their sexuality on their own terms and conditions, that this will be fully realized.

DEMETRAS, MARTHA JO-ANN. "WORKING PARENTS' CONVERSATIONAL RESPONSES TO THEIR TWO-YEAR-OLD SONS (LINGUISTIC INPUT, LANGUAGE ACQUISITION)." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/183947.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite claims by some theorists to the contrary, investigators have shown that information about grammatical errors is available to young children learning language via the conversational responses of their parents. The present study described five categories of responses in the conversations of working mothers and fathers to their normally developing two-year-old sons, and investigated whether any of these responses were differentially related to well-formed vs. ill-formed child utterances. Subjects were six middle-class, monolingual (English) parent-child dyads. Parents worked full-time jobs and the children were enrolled in full-time daycare. Within a two week period, four 20-minute conversational samples were audio and video recorded for each dyad in the subjects' homes during freeplay activities of the subjects' choice. Results indicated that the pattern of responses for these six parents was very similar to that reported for other parent-child dyads. The most frequent type of response for all parents was one that continued the conversation without either repeating or clarifying the child's previous utterance. The least frequent type of response was one that explicitly corrected portions of the child's utterance. Of all responses, repetitions--both clarifying and nonclarifying--appeared to be the type of response most differentially related to well-formed and ill-formed child utterances. Exact repetitions were more likely to follow well-formed utterances, while the remaining repetitions were more likely to follow ill-formed utterances. This pattern of differential responses was similar for all six dyads. Very few differences regarding the style or pattern of interaction were noted for fathers and mothers. Implications were drawn regarding the nature of linguistic input that is available to two-year-old children learning language.

Li, Shanna.

Abstract:
In this thesis, the research focuses on the recalibration of historical observations of Phoebe, the 9th satellite of Saturn, and its orbit improvement based on the re-calibrated data. The accuracy of orbit predictions depends on the theoretical model's quality (internal error) and on the quantity and accuracy of the observations used to fit the model (external error). Phoebe is far away from its planet and other major satellites, so that the theoretical model is not very complicated and the internal error is well known and generally good. However, the external error is generally unknown and is the main cause of the global error. Since the brightness of Phoebe is faint (Vmag=16.5), not so many observations have been made in the past time. The accuracy of its ephemeris is not as good as those of other major satellites of Saturn. A most adequate model of satellite motion should be built not only based on high-accurate recent observations but also on data over a period of time as long as possible. The observations of Phoebe over one hundred years have been calibrated with different catalogs. There are some inconsistencies in observational data obtained from different authors at different epochs. Many observations have been published in different formats; they cannot be used directly to fit the dynamical model, should be re-input into unified data format, and be corrected for systematic differences, with the latest astronomical constants and reference frame. The earliest observations of Phoebe have bad accuracy and not fit the models very well. At that time, the catalogues they used did not contain enough stars with a precise accuracy, so there were not many catalogue stars on the plate. Because of the unsatisfactory precision of the old catalogues at the epoch, the positions of the reference stars were not very precise. This brings today inaccuracy on the position of Phoebe. In the present work, we introduce a method, even if we do not have real plates, to reduce the positions of the natural satellites with modern astrometric catalogues, such as UCAC or GAIA in the future. After the re-calibration of historical observation data, reduction of observations has been completed and the new ephemeris Phoebe was derived. Then the synthetic representation of Phoebe's orbital motion from the ephemeris was provided

Academic demands, new social context, new routines and decrease of the parental control, are factors that may influence the sleep pattern of freshman students at the University. Medical students from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) have a full-time course, subjects with high-level content, and, at the first semester, classes begin at 7 a.m. This group composed by young adults who still suffering with delayed sleep phase, common in adolescence, indicating that this class schedule can be inappropriate at this age. The reduction of nocturnal sleep during school days, and the attempt to recover sleep on free days ? social jet lag (JLS), suggests that in the first semester, students suffer from high sleep pressure. High sleep pressure may reflect on cognitive tasks and performance. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between sleep pressure and the academic profile of medical students from the first semester of UFRN, characterizing this population socio-demographically and investigating possible impacts on therestactivity rhytm and academic performance. A sample of 88 students, healthy men and women awswered the following questionnaires: Pittsburgh Sleep Quality (PSQI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Horne & Ostberg Chronotype (HO), Munich Chronotype (MCTQ) and ?Health and Sleep? adapted. Actigraphy was used during 14 days to make actogramas and obtain non-parametric variables of the rest-activity rhythm and the grades of the morning schedule were used as academic performance. The JLS was used as a measure of sleep pressure. Statistics significance level was 95%. The population was sociodemographic homogeneous. Most students have healthy lifestyle, practice physical activity, use car to go to the university and take between 15 and 30 minutes for this route. Regarding CSV, most were classify as intermediate (38.6%) and evening (32%) chronotypes, needs to nap during the week, suffer daytime sleepiness and have poor sleep quality. 83% of the sample has at least 1h JLS, which led us to divide into two groups: Group <2h JLS (N = 44) and Group ? 2h JLS (N = 44). The groups have differences only in chronotype, showing that most evening individuals have more JLS, however, no differences were found in relation to sociodemographic aspect, rest-activity rhythm or academic performance. The homogeneity of the sample was limited to compare the groups, however, is alarming that students already present in the first half: JLG, poor sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness, which can be accentuated through the university years, with the emergence of night shifts and increased academic demand. Interventionsaddressingthe importance of good sleep habits and the change of the class start time are strategies aimed to improve student?s health.

Abstract:
The notion of identity between the ancient and the contemporary, which has its source in Mayan studies, informs the design principles of this work. Specific techniques are listed for the design of musical space and time in Guacamayo, which is "a musical drama that strives for synthesis." There follows an outline of the principle motivic material, approaches to melodic construction and text setting, techniques used to design space (or pitch) and time (or rhythm)--including traditional harmony, symmetrical modes, non-octaviating space and random number generation in the first case, and speech rhythm, folk rhythm, metre and tempo in the second--as well as the role of summation series in the construction of both time and space. A discussion of dialectic concepts, and the ways in which different techniques are combined to create a sense of motion between simple textures and complex ones leads to consideration of form-determining placement of important scenes from the opera. Comments on the composition of the orchestra and electroacoustic music conclude the essay.

Abstract:
Perhaps no melody in the country music canon has been as widely recognized and borrowed from as that of the song “The Great Speckled Bird.” This significant song has become resonant and representative of both country music culture and religious culture of the Protestant South. Through this historiographical study, I have traced the influences that helped shape “The Great Speckled Bird” and in so doing have illustrated distinct movements that led to popularizing the non-secular song through commercial country music. The composer’s use of sentimentality, neo- traditionalism, and religious ideas made it appealing to a rural southern culture struggling with the social, racial, and economic changes of the early twentieth century. As I develop and explore the diverse influences that helped to shape “The Great Speckled Bird,” I will illustrate the interconnectedness of country music culture and the wider popular and religious cultures of the white Protestant South.

The period extending from pregnancy to the months following delivery, although usually associated to positive feelings, represents a moment of great vulnerability to the development of major depressive disorders. Perinatal depression is a frequent pathology, and its consequences extend beyond the mother, potentially affecting the relationship with her partner and family functioning. Early exposure to maternal depression is associated to lower breastfeeding rates, impairment of mother-infant bonding, and consequences over child growth and development. Perinatal depression has been linked to infant sleep disturbances as early as in the neonatal period, with description of more night wakings, shorter sleep duration and more fragmented sleep. Sleep plays a fundamental role in child cognitive, social, and emotional development, and its disturbances, in a crucial moment of brain development, may facilitate significant and persistent dysfunctions. Studies associating maternal depression to child sleep disturbances show important heterogeneity in terms of design as in moment of sleep assessment. Sleep patterns go through important changes throughout the first twelve months of life, rendering impaired the association?s precise evaluation, as well as that of its potential long-term consequences. This study aimed to investigate the association between perinatal depression and altered infant sleep macrostructure at one year of life among participants in a birth cohort. In this population-based study, recruitment was carried out from pregnancy to soon after delivery, aiming to include all livebirths in the municipality of Pelotas throughout the year of 2015. Participants to one or both cohort-nested trials and those lacking information on maternal depression were excluded from these analyses. For the diagnosis of perinatal depression, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was completed during pregnancy and 3 months after delivery, having been considered perinatally depressed mothers who scored ?13 points in one or both follow-ups. Infant sleep was assessed at 3 months through the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire (BISQ) and, at 12 months, through the same subjective questionnaire added to objective data derived from continuous 24-hour actigraphy. Main sleep outcomes were number of night time wakings, night vigil time and total sleep duration in 24 hours. The sample consisted of 2222 mothers/infants, in which prevalence of perinatal depression was of 22.3% (CI 95% 20.5-24). Adjusted analyses using Poisson?s regression from BISQ-derived data showed greater risk of >3 night time wakings at 12 months among infants of depressed mothers (RR 1.52; CI 95% 1.06-2.18; p=0.02). Actigraphic data did not, however, confirm those findings (adjusted RR=1.24; CI 95% 0.85-1.81; p=0.26). No association was found between perinatal depression and the other investigated sleep variables. This study suggests a potential defining role of dysfunctional cognition among mothers with a history of perinatal depression on infant sleep characteristics at the end of the first year of life.

Dean, Bronya. "A hidden world of song : spontaneous singing in the everyday lives of three- and four-year-old children at home." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/32957.

Abstract:
This study explores the spontaneous singing of three- and four-year-old children at home, with emphasis on how young children use singing in their everyday lives. Spontaneous singing pervades the everyday lives of young children and can provide insights into a child's musical and extra-musical experience at home. Although several studies have examined spontaneous singing in educational settings, young children's musical lives at home are rarely studied in detail. The home is a difficult space to access, and data collection methods often rely on parental reporting. As a result, some types of singing have been overlooked. Located within the sociocultural theoretical tradition, this thesis draws on and develops theories of musical agency to explore how children act musically to engage with others and manage their own experience. Audio data were collected using LENA all-day recording technology supplemented by semi-structured parental interviews. Over 183 hours of audio recording were collected from 15 children (7 boys, 8 girls), aged between 3:0 and 4:10 years (average age 3:8). The children were recorded for continuous periods during their normal everyday routines. The recordings contained more than nine hours of spontaneous singing in total. The data were analysed using qualitative thematic analysis with an element of embedded numerical analysis. Interpretive analysis indicated that the children sang to act on themselves and manage social interactions. Spontaneous singing was used as a tool through which the children could realise personal and social agency and influence themselves and others. The children used different modes of singing in social and solitary contexts, demonstrating knowledge of culturally meaningful ways of singing. The home musical environment, and particularly parental singing, appeared to influence the way young children use singing in their everyday lives. This research used an innovative methodology to access young children’s singing in the home. The findings contribute to a greater understanding of young children’s musical behaviours and the home musical lives of young children. Further, the thesis provides an original contribution to the understanding of how young children use spontaneous singing as musical agents acting in and on the world around them. This research has educational implications relating to the way young children’s musicality is understood and encouraged and the importance of music in young children’s lives.

Introduction : Neonatal seizures are usually an acute manifestation of central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction. Its incidence in population-based studies ranges from 1-5:1000 live births (Lombroso, 1996) in studies of high-risk population from tertiary hospitals and/or neonatal intensive care units it is significantly higher (Da Silva et al., 2004; Nunes et al., 2008). This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and neurological prognosis of children who had seizures in the neonatal period, checking the incidence and impact of the occurrence of postnatal epilepsy in relation to neuropsychomotor development and quality of sleep. Methods : A cross sectional study was carried out in historical cohort of infants who had seizures confirmed by clinical observation and EEG or video EEG, during hospitalization in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of S?o Lucas Hospital, Pontifical Catholic University Hospital of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) in the period from January 2004 to December 2009. The study included 42 neonates, of which it was possible to follow up on 22, which were evaluated when the neuropsychomotor development through the Denver II triage test; sleep habits by the Inventory of Sleep Habits for Preschool Children; occurrence of post neonatal epilepsy by Questionnaire of Neurologic Tracking for Epilepsy (QNT-E) and the neurological diagnostic interview for epilepsy (NDIE).Results : There was no significant difference between children with and without follow-up when compared clinical perinatal data and EEG findings. In the group with follow-up was observed a high percentage of patients who developed epilepsy during the first year of life (45.5%, n = 10). It was observed a predominance of changes in Denver II test in children with epilepsy, where all of them showed abnormal or questionable results (p = 0.001). The inventory of sleep results were higher in children without epilepsy. The average difference of result for the inventory between the groups with and without epilepsy was 13.25 (95% confidence interval = 1.39 to 25.11, p = 0.030).Conclusion : The present study showed high incidence of epilepsy after neonatal crisis and association with indicators of delayed neuropsychomotor development. The sleep habits were more regular and appropriate in children with epilepsy.

Abstract:

Abstract:
It is now broadly accepted that Vaughan Williams's music betrays a more complex relation to national influences than has traditionally been assumed. It is argued in this thesis that despite the trends towards revisionism that have characterized recent work, Vaughan Williams's interest in and engagement with English folk materials and cultures remains only partially understood. Offering contextual interpretation of materials newly available in the field, my work takes as its point of departure the critical neglect surrounding Vaughan Williams's contradictory compositional debut, in which he denounced the value of folk song in English art music in an article published alongside his song 'Linden Lea', subtitled 'A Dorset Folk Song'. Reconstructing the under-documented years of the composer's early career, it is demonstrated that Vaughan Williams's subsequent 'conversion' and lifelong attachment to folk song emerged as part of a broader concern with the intelligible and participatory quality of song and its performance by the human voice. As such, it is argued that the ways in which this composer theorized an idea of 'song' illuminate a powerful perspective from which to re-consider the propositions of his project for a national music. Locating Vaughan Williams's writings within contemporaneous cultural ideas and practices surrounding 'song', 'voice', and 'Englishness', this work brings such contexts into dialogue with readings of various of the composer's works, composed both before and after the First World War. It is demonstrated in this way that the rehabilitation of Vaughan Williams's music and reputation profitably proceeds by reconstructing a complex dialogue between his writings; between various cultural ideas and practices of English music; between the reception of his works by contemporaneous critics; and crucially, by considering the propositions of his music as explored through analysis. Ultimately, this thesis contends that Vaughan Williams's music often betrays a complex and self-conscious performance of cultural ideas of national identity, negotiating an optimistic or otherwise ambivalent relationship to an English musical tradition that is constructed and referenced through a particular idea of song.

Full text
Abstract:
Minkisi (sing. nkisi) were sacred objects that housed ancestral spirits and were used for divination, healing and social justice by the Kongo people of Central Africa. When the Kongo were brought as slaves to the New World, they contributed significantly to the development of African American artistic and spiritual culture. In the Caribbean, aspects of minkisi have been retained in the creolized spiritual beliefs of Haitian Vodou, Cuban Palo Monte Mayombe and Brazilian Candomble. In North America, evidence of Kongo influence is apparent in examples of folk art and culture, including quilts, mojo hands, Afro-Carolinian face vessels, memory jugs and burial sites. In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, artists appear to have recontextualized elements of minkisi within their work, among these James “Son Ford” Thomas, James Van Der Zee, Betye and Alison Saar, Willie Cole and Renee Stout, creating a link between the Kongo past and the American present.

The study in screen it has as objective the understanding of the space circuit of production and the circles of cooperation of the soy that if develop in the Maranh?o in the technician-scientific-informational period. Characterized for the material and incorporeal flows if they develop in the Maranh?o, from the moment where it had a process of integration of the maranhense territory while peripheral space of the capitalist dynamics, that if gave through the politics of regional integration created by the State, but when it had a process of selective modernization, also partial and conservative of the agriculture, that made possible the significant increase of the production and reproduction of the capital. The study sample that with the advent of the soy, had a concentration of the production techniques, mainly in the agricultural region of Balsas, due to bigger it offers of lands, time of implantation of the culture, technique accumulated in the production, whereas in the agricultural region of Chapadinha, these indices still are without representation. Moreover, the intensification of the agricultural credit, the agrarian politics and tax incentives are elements that have propitiated increase of the production of the soy. The development of the space circuit and circles of cooperation of the soy, a side, create new forces politics in the Maranh?o that can result in the creation of a new state, the other, are responsible, for the elimination of part of the subsistence agriculture, producing social problems as, agrarian concentration and unemployment. Abstract:
In just under thirty years, the means of financing the retirement pension system have completely changed. The rules currently in force are characterised not only by their instability and complexity, but also by the fact that they suppose a total departure from the original rationale behind said system. Whereas the administrative and financial structure set up during the Liberation sought to instil an essentially contributive, corporativist and equitable scheme to cover the risk of “old age”, the reforms introduced since the beginning of the 1990s respond to an entirely different logic, more based on the concept of redistribution, universalism and equality in the eyes of the law. The present study aims to show that the means of financing the pension system are far from neutral. Provisions that at first glance can seem to be of a quintessentially technical or accounting nature in fact serve to reinforce, or even to weaken, the underlying principals of how to cover the risk of “old age”. Thereafter, there is a entire political and ideological vision of retirement in play. Before carrying out the much-needed reform of the pension system, it is therefore vital that we are aware of the import and scope of the various financial techniques that currently exist. Only by doing so can we pave the way for a coherent reform of the system, which is able to guarantee the balance of social accounts whilst also adhering to a regulatory and ideological framework that is clearly implemented and assumed

Abstract:
Four Middle English Charlemagne Romances are examined with the intention of disproving conventional claims that English romances of the 'Matter of France' are typically undistinguished. The manuscript of the Ashmole Sir Ferumbras is a holograph; preserved with it, on sheets which originally formed the binding, is a portion of the poem's rough draft. Comparison of the draft with the fair copy reveals something of the romancer's translational and compositional method, and illustrates well his enthusiasm for, and ability occasionally to improve upon, his French source. The fragment of The Song of Roland displays some sensitivity to the heroic essence of its famous French model. The poem also displays, however, a free, sensitive, sometimes eloquent and technically complex, adaptation of notable features of that model. The Sege of Melayne has been recognized for its energy; but extensive studies of the poem appear to have been prevented by an inability to account for the poem's lack of known sources and its use of extraordinary episodes and unusual narrative techniques. Analogues and possible influences do, however, exist; and most reveal the poem's remarkable affinity with propagandistic crusading literature. This affinity goes some way toward explaining, and allowing us to appreciate, the poem's unusual features. Rauf Coilyear is unusually described as a competent and straightforwardly humorous tale similar in spirit to its analogues. A closer look, however, shows the humour to be complicated by the seriousness of a social critique; at times the hero's experiences is far from laughable. There is, in fact, some similarity, both of incident and theme, with the best poems of the 'Gawain-group'. That a comparison with such poems (and, indeed, with 'serious' elements in the other Charlemagne romances) can convincingly be made suggests that our expectations of the poem's literary significance should be revised accordingly.

Abstract:
My dissertation challenges the longstanding dismissal of love in James Joyce's texts by examining the ethical and political implications of his love stories. Primarily using Martin Buber's works (but also including perspectives derived from bell hooks and Julia Kristeva), I define love as an affirmation of otherness and adopt a critical framework that promotes the love of others over the narcissistic devotion to oneself. In so doing, I highlight love as the ultimate challenge to authoritarian systems because the embrace of the other is necessary to transcend the boundaries that alienate individuals from each other and that justify imperialist and racist political structures. I thus offer a love ethic that not only compels meaningful individual interaction, but also establishes a model for effective social and civic participation, encouraging a climate of cooperation that embraces the solidarity and empathy needed for progressive politics. I also argue that analyzing Joyce's works provides a fruitful opportunity to recognize the individual and political viability of this love ethic. Focusing on Dubliners, Stephen Hero, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Exiles, and Ulysses, I examine the relationships between his characters' pursuits of love and their socio-political struggles, arguing that their love for others directly influences their acceptance of otherness within the colonialist discourses of Joyce's Dublin. For example, James Duffy's refusal of Emily Sinico in "A Painful Case" also rejects her advice to engage in the political cooperation that would promote his socialist ideas. Similarly, Stephen Dedalus's promotion of symbolic romance over real-world attachments focuses his aesthetics on ideal beauty instead of everyday Dublin, which alienates him from his audience and limits the practical success of his art. By contrast, Leopold Bloom's love for his wife Molly reflects a broader empathy for others that encourages social dialogue and counteracts what Joyce called "the old pap of racial hatred," an element in both British imperialism and Irish nationalism. My dissertation's afterword anticipates the amorous potential of Finnegans Wake, reading ALP's concluding soliloquy as a demonstration of her enduring affection for HCE that is reignited through each iteration of the text's cyclical narrative.

Abstract:
Our research has been focused on clarifying the scope, characteristics and principles of Climate ChangeEducation for Sustainable Development (CCESD) in order to implement curricula. This issue is part ofa dual framework : an interdisciplinary approach (linking Climate Science, Economics and EducationSciences) and the integration of CCESD into the primary cycle of the Senegalese education system. Ourresearch methodology was based on two inputs : the dynamics of complex systems (Forrester, 1969,Morin, 1977, 1980) to provide knowledge and the REDOC model (Representations, EducationalApproach, Didactic Tools and Skills) to understand teachers’ representations. The results of our researchled us to identify two postulates, facilitating a CCESD. On the one hand, the register of knowledge thatmust be activated to implement CCESD (four types : scientific knowledge, institutional knowledge, measured knowledge and pedagogical knowledge). On the other hand, the analysis of learners'representations is a necessary and essential step to set up a diversified and complementary set ofpedagogies, develop appropriate didactic tools and propose a contextualised skills referenceframework. In our research, the representations of Senegalese primary school teachers were discussedon the basis of a survey. We highlighted their representations of sustainable development, climatechange or global warming. In the case of Senegal, we observed that the issue of climate change had tobe linked to other controversial issues in the school system : the status of teachers, the quality ofinfrastructure, the issue of public health, the problem of the lack of school canteens, etc. Another wayof reminding us that the goals of sustainable development (SGD) are systemic and that qualityeducation (SDG 4) can be a key driver for change

There are always some things that one considers to have played a vital role in the course of his/her life. “Campus Folk Song” is about an old love that could not be undone in the author’s life. In order to make these old but beautiful songs to be sung again and again, the author selected twenty of her favorite songs that express her emotions as the reference material for her research on modern illustration creation as well as to extensively explore the media and interpretation methods of illustration creation. In addition, the author converted the music content that once deeply attracted her to popular illustration art, and consequently did a study on graphic conversion. Therefore, this creation can be said to interpret Taiwan’s “Campus Folk Song” that was popular thirty years ago combined with the author’s “old love and new favorite”, using illustration form. It’s hoped that these illustrations will lead the viewer to experience the beauty of the lyrics of these “campus songs” through time and space, to taste the romance and sadness of different generations, and then to appreciate it enough to want to sing “Campus Folk Song”. The author also expects that those who like “Campus Folk Song” will relive past feelings so that the paintings and songs will simultaneously soothe the alienated heart of modern people, for the frustrated to obtain courage; and the depressed to gain confidence, with an attempt to remain a relaxing stream in the midst of social chaos. The creation first describes the creative motivation and purpose and develops structure and process according to research methods and scope limits. Chapter II explores the literature related to the topic of creation with the direction of the development and type of campus folk song as well as the characteristics and media of illustrations, enumerating artists and illustrators in line with the theme or concept of the creation. Chapter III explores the creative practice and analyzes individual creative concept, creative approach and the way the work is presented. Chapter IV will analyze the work form. Chapter V discusses the essence of the creation to explore other possibilities of using a similar approach for subsequent creations.

Walsh, Angela. "Against the odds : a gendered analysis of sons’ involvement in filial care." Thesis, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/16227.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to examine factors that predict soil's involvement in filial care. In addition to exploring selected family structure and demographic factors that relate to men's involvement in different types of care, the gender and health status of the care recipient were considered as integral components in the provision of filial care. Data for this research comes from the Work and Eldercare Survey (1995) conducted by the Work and Eldercare Research Group of CARNET: The Canadian Aging Research Network. Data from 108 adult male caregivers were analyzed with regards to their involvement in three gendered types of care traditionally female (e.g. bathing), traditionally male (e.g. yard work) and gender neutral care (e.g. shopping). This thesis tests a model that was originally devised by Campbell and Martin- Matthews (2003) and is predicated on Finch and Mason's (1989) concept of legitimate excuses, which explores the 'how' and 'why' behind men's limited involvement in filial care. Results show that the men in this sample were more likely to report providing gender neutral care than the other two types of care. Furthermore, the expectation that other family and work obligations would impede men's involvement in caregiving was not supported. However, numerous characteristics of the elderly care recipient did influence the likelihood of men's involvement in numerous types of filial care. Men were more likely to provide gender neutral and traditionally male care to mothers than to fathers. Also, for each of the types of care, the lower the reported health status of the care recipient, the greater the likelihood of son's being involved in care provision.

Patterson, Charles P. "A fruitful bough : the Old Testament story of Joseph in medieval and Golden Age Spanish literature." 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/18454.

Full text
Abstract:
The Old Testament story of Joseph is common to the Christians, Muslims, and Jews of medieval Spain, and each group drew upon its own and other exegetical traditions to produce literary versions of the biblical tale. After the expulsion of the latter two groups, several Hispanic playwrights, including such notable figures as Lope de Vega, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, continued to produce theatrical versions of the Josephine legend throughout the Golden Age. Most of these plays attained a great deal of popularity. In spite of the importance of these works in early Spanish culture, recent scholarship has paid comparatively little attention to them. The present study is meant to remedy that situation. By drawing upon the theoretical concepts of Edward Said, Amin Maalouf, Jonathan Z. Smith, and others regarding identity and Otherness, I demonstrate how each adaptation of the story constructs or evaluates religious and national identity. Medieval prose and poetic adaptations written by representatives of each of the three monotheistic faiths reveal an attempt to maintain the boundaries of religious identity within a multicultural context. Sixteenth-century theatrical versions deal with the post-expulsion identity crisis by proposing a more inclusive attitude towards New Christians. Finally, under the Baroque influence of the late seventeenth century, adaptations of the Joseph story become increasingly metatheatrical. This literary self-reflection serves to interrogate the nature of identity and reveal its constructedness. Given the importance of identity issues in current scholarship, this analysis suggests the need for increased critical attention to be paid to the Spanish Josephine tradition.

Van, der Zwan Pieter. "The religiosity of the book of Song of Songs in context." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/8637.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite its chequered interpretational history, the book of Shîr ha-Shîrîm (Song of Songs) in the Hebrew Bible and Christian Old Testament has still not come to its fullest religious potential. The reason is that it has mainly served relatively closed religious traditions defined by the exclusion of those that have reacted against it. As the text of Song of Songs itself does not explicitly testify to any religiosity, these communities have understood it religiously by projecting their own predetermined needs and beliefs onto it. The text does, however, suggest several layers in the history of its formation, representing different levels of consciousness and stages of religiosity. In the postmodern globalising context where the importance of interfaith understanding is increasingly realised and the nature of human religiosity is constantly redefined in terms of ever-broadening horizons, the religiosity of the book has been stretched as wide as possible by also taking into consideration the ancient contextual influences which could have left their traces on the unconscious mind of its author(s) and redactor(s). To this end, the transpersonal psychological theory of Kenneth Wilber as interpreted by Michael Washburn has been used. Wilber’s inclusive view of religiosity respects all its forms as developmentally appropriate expressions of experiences of the divine which should all be taken seriously. The explicit “absence” of the divine in Song of Songs has been so conspicuous that it has ironically made it more present and led to a greater search for the Ineffable whose whispering and footprints are discernible in relation to the level of consciousness. Exploring the religiosity of Song of Songs in this way then becomes an exercise in being more sensitive to the presence of the divine in all other areas of life as well. Traditional polarities such as sexuality and religiosity are dissolved at the same time and proven to coincide as two aspects of the same experience. Not only does erotic love open one’s eyes to the divine in nature as the body of God, but one also encounters the divine in the body.

Abstract:
Up until the Kralice Bible, Old Czech biblical translations, traditionally divided into four translations, were based solely on the Latin Vulgate. This thesis examines all available Old Czech and Early Modern Czech biblical sources created before the Kralice Bible and assesses whether they contain the Song of Songs, one of the sapiental books, and if so, it attempts to identify whether the translation stems from an earlier version, or of it is a new translation. Several versions from the four Old Czech bible translations and later prints of the 16th century were then chosen as sources for representative editions of the Song. Based on those editions, a linguistic analysis of the texts was performed, oriented on phonologic, morphologic, lexical and syntactic features, which eventually yielded several tendencies in selected aspects of the linguistic development of the Czech language.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, I investigate the impact of the extended religious and political elements in the ancient Near East of the Late Bronze period that influenced the reigns of Hattušili III, his consort, Queen Puduhepa, circa 1267 to 1237 BCE and their son Tudhaliya IV circa 1237 to 1228 BCE. As rulers of the Hittites, they were not the greatest and most influential royals, like the great Suppiluliuma I circa 1322 to 1344 BCE, but their ability to adopt an eclectic approach similar to that of their great predecessors regarding religion, politics, international diplomacy and signing treaties made this royal triad a force to be reckoned with in the ancient Near East. Therefore, central to this investigation will be the impact of Hattušili III’s usurpation of the throne and Puduhepa’s role in the Hurrianisation of the state cult and pantheon. Also included is a brief investigation into the continuation of the reorganisation and restructuring of the Hittite state cult and local cult inventories by Tudhaliya IV and his mother Puduhepa after the death of Hattušilli III. By researching this royal triad, their deities, their Hurro-Hittite culture and the textual evidence of their rule, it becomes possible to assemble some of the elements that impacted on their rule. I have used available transliterated translated texts and pictures to support and illustrate the investigation of this complex final period in the history of the Hittite Empire.
