L’oeuvre de Sophie Calle se place d’emblée dans une relation ludique par rapport aux textes et au personnage de l’écrivain Hervé Guibert. Si No Sex Last Night s’ouvre sur l’annonce par Sophie de la mort de son ami Hervé, si Douleur exquise raconte un épisode d’intimité, celui du bain, entre Calle et Guibert, si Guibert fut le dépositaire négligent d’une photo d’enfance de l’artiste sur laquelle il écrit un texte que Calle recopie dans un de ses propres livres, force est de constater que le travail de Calle se met sous le signe de rendez-vous artistiques, sporadiques avec Hervé Guibert et ses écrits. Ces derniers se donnent d’ailleurs comme relances ou entraves au processus de création. Hervé Guibert serait un des spectres de Calle, une « image-fantôme », pour reprendre ici le titre d’un livre de Guibert, qui visite Sophie de temps à autre et dont celle-ci suit les demandes et les prières. Et c’est par le biais de cette photographie de Sophie enfant qui a été prêtée à Guibert, photographie qu’il a perdue puis retrouvée, qu’il nous est possible de réfléchir sur le « M’as-tu vue, Hervé? » que Calle lance sans cesse dans sa propre oeuvre.

Fictional identities of Cindy Sherman and Sophie Calle In this paper we confront the issue of masquerade in chosen works of contemporary artists Cindy Sherman and Sophie Calle. Referring to Joan Riviere's (1929) statement that femininity is a masquerade, we examine the fictional embodiments of the mentioned artists in which the mask not only conceals but also reveals reality. The artistic and literary corpus is composed as follows: Cindy Sherman (Untilted Film Stills 1977, Society portraits (2008) and Flappers (2016-18)); Sophie Calle (La filature (1981), Les histoires vraies (2002) and Prenez soin de vous (2007)). Following the analysis of the artists' projects and their autobiographical or semiautobiographical approaches, we come to reveal the reversal of the techniques used by the artists. It means that Sherman, like the film stills, captures a moment and immobilizes it; Calle, for her part, gives life to the events that she provokes. However, in both cases the masks they wear, the fictitious identities that the artists embody, contribute to revisit the codes of the time we live in.

Quand Sophie Calle explique dans En finir pourquoi ce projet fut un échec, elle écrit que les images qu’on lui avait fournies « ne se suffisaient pas à elles-mêmes. En montrant des photos trouvées sans apport vécu de ma part, je ne collais pas à mon propre style. » Pour elle, le texte manquait, « ce texte, poursuit-elle, qui me colle à la peau ». En partant de cette affirmation, nous nous proposons de relire et de revoir certaines oeuvres de Sophie Calle afin de les confronter à cette question du style et du texte-peau qui vient à manquer. Sophie Calle, qui ne semble pas croire aux métaphores, entretient un rapport aplani à la réalité où la limite entre le propre et le figuré n’existe pas. Nous montrons comment cette façon de voir le monde influence le contact entre écriture, peinture et photographie dans ses oeuvres. En relisant ses filatures, en analysant son rapport aveugle à la peinture et ses tentatives d’épuiser tout sentiment dans ses deux derniers livres, nous expliquons comment le rapport texte/image est chaque fois défini par l’absence d’un « déboîtement » (Roland Barthes) entre les deux, offrant très peu d’espace au commentaire et au rêve du lecteur.

De modo a embaralhar arte e vida, ambos os autores se prestam a um movimento de reduções, de subtrações a partir de um minimalismo brutal e de uma simplicidade crua. Nesta medida, tomada por ideias oulipianas e, em meio ao pensamento de Bachelard, busca-se um currículo poeticamente inventariado, suspendendo as definições, as verdades, os julgamentos, os quadros de referência, as atitudes pré-formatadas. Trata-se de um exercício que deseja portar um falar de coisas comuns do cotidiano, do trivial e por vezes evidente, mas que, no entanto, raramente recebe nossa atenção. C’est à partir de ce dispositif hétérogène que l’on aborde la version du projet publiée au sein de ce numéro spécial. A major role of culture is to imply the expansion of the spatial and temporal borders of the being with the aim to abolish them completely. The meaning of death and disappearance occupies a special place in many works. Marie Darrieussecq, Christian Boltanski and Sophie Calle, artists exploiting the imaginary possibilities of letters but also of installations, give us some visions of mortuary rituals adapted in accordance with the changing contemporaneity. The rituals imagined by Darrieussecq, Boltanski and Calle in The House of the Dead, The Records of the Hearts and the film Could Not Grasp the Death, nourished by new technologies, nevertheless break with the idea of removing the dead from a mode where they should no longer have their place. The “cabins” proposed by the artists provide the intermediate space where we can bring the dead closer to our existences; save their holograms, preserve the rhythm of their hearts, catch the moment of passage. Darrieussecq, Boltanski and Calle thus paint new places of memory that could redraw intergenerational links where those who remain and those who have left maintain contact.

This article argues that Sophie Calle's desire to become her own work of art exists in tension with the fear of becoming a mere product for consumption. Recognising this fear of commodification allows us to view Calle's work from a couple of new angles. Firstly, it tells a compelling story about contemporary emotional life, in particular, the emotional demands made of women. Drawing on sociological perspectives, this article will explore Calle's work in relation to a commercial culture that turns the traditionally ‘feminine’ emotional domain into a lucrative resource. Secondly, it allows us to see Calle's art-making as a form of defence against this injunction to ‘sell oneself’. In a consumer culture in which one's sense of a private self is pushed further and further into a corner, art appears as a refuge in which one's creative singularity may be preserved.

The mobility of people and objects is a central motif in the work of contemporary artist Sophie Calle. In this article, I compare two of Calle’s exhibitions that take a particularly unusual approach to mobility. In Fantômes and Prenez soin de vous, the objects are an email and works of art and their mobility arises from their displacement. In both exhibitions, Calle obliges the spectator to look at other people looking at the artefacts, which I refer to as the ‘double look’. In this article, I analyse how this technique serves to question the notion of a unitary, individual artist behind each work of art, how it questions the parameters of spectatorship, and how it challenges understandings of intimacy in contemporary culture.

O presente artigo apresenta uma análise das relações entre a literatura e o retrato a partir da obra de Sophie Calle, considerando como a artista aponta para a potência a moda na criação do sujeito que se dá mediante a construção do corpo e de toda a sua extensão material. A obra Histórias reais, de Calle, será tomada como objeto de estudo com o objetivo de se pensar as questões relativas ao tempo, ao espaço e à imagem, destacando, sobretudo, os signos da moda que ali aparecem. Sophie Calle, em Purloined, expôs obras ausentes mediante descrições feitas por funcionários de museus; Jean-Paul Thenot, em Cent lectures de Marcel Duchamp, indagou, a cem pessoas, o que lhes evocavam imagens das obras de Duchamp. A fim de captar a percepção do público de arte em Porto Alegre, os exercícios de Calle e Thenot foram reproduzidos (com adaptações), tendo por objeto três obras da dupla Ío expostas em 2018 no Santander Cultural. Houve, assim, a aplicação de questionários a cem visitantes da instituição, convidando-os a descrever cada um dos trabalhos em uma palavra, bem como a realização de entrevistas orais com seus funcionários, nas quais se pediu que descrevessem as obras. Análises de conteúdo dos dados colhidos indicam, contudo, que a maioria deles não corresponde à definição epistemológica de “descrição”. Este artigo propõe possíveis explicações desse resultado, como os meandros da relação entre imagem e palavra ou a influência de teorias tradicionais sobre interpretação da arte.

In Seven American Deaths and Disasters (2013), Kenneth Goldsmith recounted a set of tragic and unanticipated events in recent American history by using transcriptions of radio and TV broadcasts, usually from minor networks. Designed to be an “eighthAmerican disaster,” Goldsmith presented The Body of Michael Brown, a performance based on the St. Louis autopsy report at the “Interrupt 3” conference at Brown University(13 March 2015), eliciting widespread criticism and controversy. Seemingly very different from Goldsmith—Sophie Calle’s projects, for the past few decades, set up particularprocedural processes that raise pressing epistemological questions, especially about the nature of relationships, personal and political. One of her recent projects, Prenez soin de vous (Take Care of Yourself) that was based on her installation for the Venice Biennale in 2007, comprises comments by 107 women on an email that Calle received from her then lover. In this project, Calle uses the “real” words of others to create a montage of possible interpretations of the discourse that confronts us in our daily lives. For Calle, as for Goldsmith, the most troubling gap is that between information and knowledge, while the issue, that a conceptual poetics can take as a premise, is that the body most difficult to getinside of turns out to be one’s own.

Lors de son exposition rétrospective au Centre Pompidou en 2003, Sophie Calle a dévoilé des oeuvres inédites, créées pour l’occasion. Cette étude, qui se nourrit aussi d’une collaboration curatoriale et éditoriale avec l’artiste depuis 2002, considère les problématiques originales abordées par les pièces Unfinished (1988-2003), Une jeune femme disparaît (2003), Voyage en Californie (2003) et Douleur exquise (1984-2003). L’oeuvre n’est plus envisagée d’un simple point de vue intertextuel et narratif. Le postulat est celui d’une autonomie renouvelée de l’image, qui révèle l’omniprésence des métaphores de la disparition, du manque et de la perte. La relique pourrait devenir ici l’expression d’un impossible deuil, en filigrane, dans l’oeuvre.

As obras Unfinished (2005) de Sophie Calle e Fabio Balducci e The Folders (2011) de Nedko Solakov estimulam o debate sobre a memória de uma criação em processo que é posta em performance nessas obras. O próprio processo torna-se, pois, conteúdo arquivável, desvelando tramas de memória que a arte produz sobre si mesma.

Maria Martins foi uma escultora brasileira, conhecida por suas "formas estranhas" e a partir de seus relacionamentos, tanto com o marido, um Embaixador, quanto com outros artistas ilustres do início do século XX, como Marcel Duchamp. Neste artigo, proponho rever, primeiramente, a crítica de sua obra, nos anos 1950 e no início do século XXI, quando foi retomada, e, em especial, demonstrar possíveis conexões entre suas formas esculturais híbridas e as produções de artistas como a Baronesa Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven e Sophie Calle. Para isso, analiso algumas de suas esculturas, como Iara e Impossible, mas também assemblages e ready-mades da Baronesa, assim como dois projetos de Sophie Calle apresentados em Double Game (1999), estabelecendo relações entre essas obras e alguns dos objetos construídos ou "reapropriados" por Marcel Duchamp. A partir dessas análises e dos diálogos formados, percebe-se que a dimensão do corpo feminino (mas também do corpo meio humano, meio animal e vegetal), nas esculturas e outros objetos, reposiciona a "modelo" ou objeto de uma reprodução como aquela que lança o olhar e também cria e reflete. Assim, os nomes das obras e das posições ocupadas pelas artistas – baronesa, embaixatriz, detetive, etc. – são retomados a partir de sentidos e perspectivas diversos, indicando não mais posições ou funções limitantes; e os títulos das obras desenvolvidas por elas também são reconsiderados. Através dessas ligações, e suas consequentes diferenças, formulam-se reflexões sobre a questão da reprodução, da réplica ou da cópia (e dos moldes ou modelos) e, portanto, da série, o que leva a pensar nas problemáticas acerca da modernidade, com teóricos como Walter Benjamin e Jacques Derrida.

An engagement with the aesthetics, rhetorics and methodologies of surveillance presents a canvas on which visual artists can critique, subvert or just play with emergent technologies. This paper probes artistic methodologies that implicate surveillance and the ethical tensions of appropriating the surveilled lives of strangers for creative pursuits. The ethically challenging practices of several contemporary artists are discussed including Sophie Calle, and the author reflects upon her own body of work. O caráter coletivo e vivencial de certa vertente da produção de arte contemporânea traz à tona estratégias artísticas das mais variadas. A tentativa de promover diferentes tipos de grupalidade pode ser pensada como indício de um desejo genuíno de estar junto. Desta forma, o presente texto, como parte de um estudo mais amplo acerca das formas de estar-junto da arte contemporânea, pretende se debruçar sobre uma forma específica que se evidencia em vários trabalhos artísticos. É o estar-junto do "perseguir". O propósito é aprofundar um olhar a respeito dessa estratégia de estar-junto, identificando toda a potência por trás da ação de perseguir. Para isso, foram analisados trabalhos específicos de Francis Alys, Vito Acconci, Sophie Calle e Marina Abramovic.
