Abstract:
The main objective of this paper is to validate a finite-element (FE) modeling protocol to simulate thin-walled members for static and dynamic analyses. Arbitrary-shaped cross-sections, including open, closed, and multicellular sections can be efficiently modeled for further advanced study. The framework is thoroughly validated and verified using the existing analytical and closed-form solutions, as well as experimental results available in literature. This work is motivated by the higher accuracy of the shell FE-based modeling to capture the local and global complex behaviors of thin-walled members with asymmetric sections. Higher computational expenses, however, are required for such sophisticated shell finite element models (SFEM). Accordingly, a framework hosted in MATLAB and implementing the python scripting technique in ABAQUS, is developed, which includes eigen buckling, static nonlinear, modal frequency and dynamic time-history analyses. For a more modeling convenience, various parameters are incorporated such as imperfections, residual stresses, material definitions, element choice, meshing control, and boundary conditions. Several examples are provided to illustrate the application of the proposed framework, and to prove the robustness and accuracy of the generated FE models. This paper concludes with the efficiency of implementing SFEMs for simulating thin-walled members; thereby, establishing a more accurate and advanced structural analysis.

The Czech Republic, as a member of international organizations (NATO, EU, UNO), with respect to current global security environment, employs the units of the army both at its own state territory and outside the Czech Republic in multinational forces operations. The article focuses on preparation of meteorological reports of future Automated Command, Control, and Information system (C2I) in conditions of the Army of the Czech Republic. The issue of automated command, control, and information systems is of high importance in the solving of asymmetrical operations tasks today and in the upcoming future. Define the basic resources for creation of meteorological reports of NATO standards in Network Enabled Capabilities (NEC) conditions. The authors define group of meteorological report for designing a new and by the Army of the Czech Republic required sophisticated Automated Fire Support Control System of Artillery meeting NATO standards in Network Enabled Capabilities (NEC) conditions. The article represents section of a huge defensive research project of Ministry of Defence of the Czech Republic and the Army of the Czech Republic solved by leading scientists of the University of Defence in Brno.

Abstract:
Purpose To evaluate the correlations between relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) magnitude, assessed using the clinical plus scale and neutral density filters, and visual field parameters in patients with unilateral or asymmetrical bilateral optic neuropathy or retinopathy. Methods Fifty-two patients with RAPD, graded by the swinging flashlight test and neutral density filters, were analyzed in this cross-sectional trial. The RAPD clinical plus scale was divided into grade 1+, initial weak constriction; grade 2+, initial stall then dilatation; grade 3+, immediate dilatation; and grade 4+, fixed amaurotic pupil. Patients with positive RAPD underwent a visual field examination with Humphrey automated perimetry that included visual field index (VFI), mean deviation (MD), and pattern standard deviation (PSD). Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients and linear regression were used to analyze the association between RAPD grades and visual field parameters. Results RAPD clinical plus grades were correlated with interocular VFI (r = 0.55, P < 0.001) and MD (r = 0.48, P = 0.004) differences. Average interocular VFI differences were estimated as follows: 16.75 × RAPD plus grade– 7.53. RAPD, graded by neutral density filters, was correlated with VFI (r = 0.59, P < 0.001), MD (r = 0.54, P < 0.001), and PSD (r = 0.34, P = 0.01). Conclusions The RAPD plus scale and neutral density filter grading systems were associated with quantitative visual field defect parameters, with VFI showing the strongest association. RAPD clinical grading could substitute more sophisticated central visual field evaluation methods as a low-cost, low-tech, and widely available approach.

AbstractAfter decades of rule-of-law promotion in world affairs, international law and legality have regained scholarly imperative. Yet this has not dissolved disciplinarity between international law (IL) and relations (IR), but furthered a priori theorizing and the unilateral extension of disciplinary research agendas. A prime example is the influential ‘legalization agenda’ of IR scholarship, where an institutionalist doctrine has renarrated the ‘L word’ through a fetishizing of rules and a managerial focus on rule compliance. However, this approach confronts a problem of relevance as international struggles increasingly involve contests over how to legally characterize issues, actions, and events, and this engages juridical and normative dimensions of rule application which are beyond the managerialism of compliance. This article argues for greater sociological and critical engagement with the way in which the concept of law operates through juridico-political practices of legality, and the aim is to provide a theoretical and empirical discussion that revives the significance of the juridico-political world for scholarships which have habitually underplayed the constitutive significance of lawyering for rule application. To do so, this article, first, addresses the profundity of Kant's work and concern over law's application by a rule-applier and, second, claims this has long invited a more critical sociology. To initiate that social exploration, the paper draws on both Pierre Bourdieu's concept of the ‘juridical effect’ and the Foucauldian notion of ‘normative law’ to theorize the significance of juridical and normative practices in the making of international law's rule. In the final section, I introduce the empirical benefit of these critical sociologies by turning to the law of armed conflict (LOAC), and the ways juridical and normative power have enabled sophisticated militaries of the developed world to constrain the application of the LOAC in contemporary wars of asymmetric combat.

Abstract:
The dramatic decline in consumption after 1990 was an important problem during the analysis of the sector. Even today, consumption is still below the degree that was before the political change, and significantly lags behind the EU level.The importance of this topic is emphasized by the fact that surplus milk could be marketed through the increased domestic consumption; this would create a more stable and calculable situation for farmers. Therefore, I considered it important to reveal what factors and by what shares influence the consumption of milk and dairy products. The relationship, time series and cross-sectional analysis based on national and international databases demonstrate the relationship between the consumption of milk and dairy products and the other determining factors of consumption in Hungary and in the EU-25 through diagrams. I draw the conclusion that there is a medium correlation between the development of the economy, the higher income level and the consumption of milk and dairy products. Just before our EU accession, the dairy sector was one of the most critical industries of Hungarian agriculture, which is why I chose this for my analysis. I regard as a new scientific result the econometric analysis of the asymmetric market conditions in the price transmission approach within our dairy sector between 1995 and 2003. I confirmed and quantified that the market is under an oligopoly and defined the direction of price adjustment. Furthermore, I regard as a new result in the price transmission analysis (also published in the article published with Dr. József Tóth), that the three possible dimensions (elasticity, a symmetry relations,lag) are analysed simultaneously.Therefore,a more sophisticated picture is given on price transmission. The theoretical advantages and disadvantages are verified by an example of a vertical coordination based on the horizontal cooperation in the dairy sector (Alföldi Tej Ltd).

Professor Hare, delivering the presidential address to the Aristotelian Society in Oxford in 1984, said: “It is commonly said that the property of being water supervenes on the chemical (or ultimately on the physical) property of being H2O. As it stands this view seems to me to be obviously false.” In terminology, that will become clearer as we proceed, Hare defended the manifest image—in this case, ordinary liquid water against elimination by the scientific image (which reduces “being water” to “being H2O”). Hare used the verb to supervene instead of to be reducible, but the difference between the two is slight (as we shall see in a later section). A more common view among philosophers and scientists is expressed in the following citation from Kim (1990, p. 14): “Chemical kinds and their microphysical compositions (at least, at one level of description) seem to strongly covary with each other, and yet it is true, presumably, that natural kinds are asymmetrically dependent on microphysical structures.” Kim takes the view that manifest objects are “appearances” of a reality constituted by systems of imperceptible particles. Such a view takes for granted that the macroscopic, manifest world is dependent on the microstructure of the world in such a way that it is underlying things that are more real and determine appearances. In crude jargon: science uncovers the Dinge-an-sich that explain the phenomena we see. I chose the quotations of Hare and Kim because both point to, though fail to address, the philosophical issue I discuss in this chapter, viz. the tension between manifest and scientific image, focusing on chemistry. “Manifest” versus “scientific” imagery talk stems from Sellars. The manifest image refers to things like water, milk-lapping cats, injustice-angry people, as well as sophisticated interpretations of “people in the world.” The scientific image is concerned with things like neurons, DNA, quarks, and the Schrödinger equation, again including sophisticated reflection and a promise of more to come. I use “manifest image” with a different inflection from Sellars, avoiding associations with sense data (which was an important part of his concern), associating it rather with forms of life.

Abstract:
In a 2-pass cooling system the pressure driven air flow distribution is investigated experimentally using the non-intrusive PIV Technique. The generic model as part of a complex and sophisticated cooling system consists of two square-sectioned ducts with a length of 20 diameters and an inherent 180 degree bend. The system has been investigated basically with smooth walls (case 0) and, later on, with two different kinds of ribbed walls in both legs. Ribs are applied to enhance the cooling performance; they are placed on two opposite walls of both legs in a symmetric (case A) and an asymmetric manner (case B), respectively. The ribs are inclined with an angle of 45 degrees versus the duct axis (i.e. main flow direction). The applied rib lay-out is well-proved and optimized with respect to heat transfer improvement and the inherent pressure drop increase. The system rotates about an axis orthogonal to the centreline of the straight passes. The configuration was analyzed with the planar the two-component Particle Image Velocimetry (2C PIV), which is capable of obtaining complete maps of the instantaneous as well as the averaged flow field even at high turbulence levels, which are typically present within duct turns, near ribs and, above all, during rotation. The presented investigations were conducted in stationary and rotating mode. Especially in the bend region separation phenomena and vortices with high local turbulence are apparent. The presence of ribs changes the fluid motion by generating additional vortices impinging the side walls. Flow visualization with injected oil smoke using the laser light sheet visualization technique was helpful to detect vortex structures and separations. Especially in the bend area separation regions and vortices with high local turbulence are apparent. The results shown in this paper demonstrate the effect of the 180 degree bend in combination with the two rib turbulator geometries for isothermal flow conditions excluding any buoyancy with and without rotation. Turbulent channel flow was investigated at a Reynolds number of 50,000, derived with the hydraulic diameter of the pass, non-rotating and at a rotation number of 0.02 which was chosen still moderate. Engine relevant rotation numbers are in order of .1 or higher. A reconstruction of model mountings will allow higher values for the next tests. Future work will expand to higher rotational speed and, also, will include buoyancy effects. This investigation shall help to clarify the complex flow phenomena due to the interaction of several vortices, present in two-pass cooling systems. The flow maps obtained with PIV are of good quality and high spatial resolution and therefore provide a test case for the development and validation of numerical simulation tools like the DLR flow solver TRACE which is not a topic of this paper.
