Full textSweet pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R.BR.] and sweet sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] are annual crops from which the sweet sap can be fermented to ethanol. They appear to have a high nitrogen (N) use efficiency, but this remains to be demonstrated in eastern Canada. Studying the morphological traits of their rooting system could help understanding their N use efficiency. The main objectives of this study were to (i) compare both species for yield and N use efficiency, (ii) determine their response to increasing mineral N rate, (iii) compare their response to mineral vs. organic N sources (liquid swine and liquid dairy manures), (iv) compare their root morphological traits with those of grain corn (Zea Mays L.), the sole feedstock used for ethanol production in eastern Canada, and (v) compare annual carbon input to soil from these three species. Species were grown at two experimental sites in Quebec. The N rates that led to maximum sugar yield for sweet pearl millet and sweet sorghum were 86 and 91 kg N ha-1, depending on site. Mineral N fertilization resulted in greater yields than the liquid manures, which showed fertilizer N equivalences varying from 15 to 52%. Fifty-four to 82% of applied mineral N fertilizer was recovered in the aboveground biomass of sweet pearl millet and sweet sorghum. While root biomass and annual carbon input were greater with corn, the length of the rooting system and the proportion of very fine roots were greater with sweet pearl millet and sweet sorghum. Our results show a high N use efficiency of sweet pearl millet and sweet sorghum, and therefore indicate low environmental risk associated with their fertilization. Moreover, our results suggest that the peculiar root morphology of these crops contribute to their high N use efficiency.
Kone, Marihouma.
Full textThe objective was to evaluate the agronomic potential, namely establishment, winter survival, biomass production, and nutritive value of novel forage species with a high content of condensed tanins or sesquiterpene lactones grown in pure stand or in mixture with two forage grasses, timothy (Phleum pratense L.) and meadow fescue (Festuca pratense Huds.), under pasture management in four climatic regions of Quebec. The field experiment took place in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue (Montreal region), Saint-Augustin-de- Desmaures (Capitale-Nationale region), La Pocatière (Bas-Saint-Laurent region), and Normandin (Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region), over two years (2016 and 2017). At all study sites in 2017, chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) and birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) had satisfactory yields compared to alfalfa at all sites, while sainfoin (Onobrychis vicifolia Scop.) did not perform well. Sainfoin had the highest content of condensed tanins (average of 10.7 g kg-1 dry matter) and moderately and slowly degradable proteins.

Full textSweet sorghum and sweet pearl millet are two plants with stems rich in fermentable sugars. The sugary juice can be extracted by mechanical pressing and fermented for bioethanol production. Unlike other crops currently used for first generation bioethanol production, sweet pearl millet and sweet sorghum can grow on light and less fertile soils since they require little water and nutrient supplies. These two species are therefore very attractive to diversify the sources of sustainable biofuels production. Several studies on sweet sorghum have already been carried out worldwide, but the use of sweet pearl millet is relatively new. Agronomic breakthroughs have been achieved these recent years with both crops in the Province of Quebec. However, the process of harvesting, storage, and extracting the juice from the biomass of sweet pearl millet and sweet sorghum has not yet been optimized under the regional realities of Quebec. Experiments have therefore been carried out in 2012, 2013, and 2014 in the Province of Quebec to optimize the harvesting, storage, and juice extraction process of both crops. Four components have been studied separately (harvesting, storage of biomass, juice extraction, and storage of the juice) and then an optimal scenario, from harvest to juice storage prior fermentation, was determined. Tests of harvesting were first performed to determine, among others, the adequate harvesting speeds for both crops. Storage trials with whole stalks and chopped biomass were also carried out to investigate the impact of various time delays on the volume of juice extracted and its sugars concentration. Two experimental presses were tested and compared to determine the most adequate one in terms of juice quantity and quality (as extracted sugars). Finally, experiments on juice storage were carried out to explore the impact of various time delays and storage temperatures on the juice’s sugar concentration. Our results indicated that the sweet sorghum and sweet pearl millet can be harvested with a conventional forage harvester, ideally before lodging, which might occur frequently under Quebec climate. Whole stalks storage is possible over a period of 12 days for sweet sorghum and 4 days for sweet pearl millet biomass. If the biomass is chopped, storage should however not be longer than 24 hours to avoid sugar losses by fermentation or by the action of enzymes such as invertase. The extracted juice can be stored for 12 h without any sugar loss if stored at ambient temperature. Juice extraction of sweet sorghum biomass should be carried out without the leaves, using a hydraulic or a roller presses, for optimal extraction of the juice. For sweet pearl millet, extraction of the juice using a roller press is not recommended due to the small diameter of the stems. The results indicate that it is possible to use these two crops for bioethanol production in Quebec, although this production would remain a secondary source of income for producers, given a short period of harvest and relatively low sugar yields.

Full textThe purpose of this paper is to establish the Laval University Master graduates in economic’s earnings profile and calculate the returns associated with this diploma. The methodology used is identical to that used by Vaillancourt et Ebrahimi (2010) and Stark (2007). It combines the cost-benefit analysis of Becker (1960) and analysis by estimating the Mincer (1974) econometric model . We have calculated the return of master over the Bachelor in Economic firstly for the individual and then for the society. The calculation was first made generally and then by gender and type of employer of graduates. The database we use comes from the survey conducted in 2014 among graduates of the Economics Department by the Laval University placement service(SPLA) in collaboration with the department of economics. Our results show that the major employer of graduates of the department is the public sector including the federal public service, the provincial public service, the municipal public service, teaching. The majority of the graduates is male. The income of men is still higher than that of women and income of private sector workers are higher than those in public workers. Furthermore, the results suggest that the investment for the passage from bachelor to master is profitable both for the individual and for society. Indeed, the average private return is 5:3% and the average social return is 3:7%. The private return for males is 5:3% and women is 5:4%. The private return of private sector workers is 5:3% and that of public sector workers is 5:4%. The results corresponding to social performance are 3:7%, 3:5%, 3:8% and 3:6%, respectively, for men, women, workers in the private and public workers. We note as well as the social return is usually less than the private return, the private return of women exceeds that of men and the private performance in the public sector is larger than private. But the differences both between the sexes and the type of employer are of low magnitude. The qualitative conclusions we draw are going in the same direction as those of Vaillancourt et Ebrahimi (2010) and Stark (2007).

Full textSaffron is an autumn crocus that produces a highly valuable spice. Several saffron farms have been established over recent years in the province of Quebec. However, the edaphic and climatic conditions differ considerably compared to the countries of origin of the crop, which led us to test several aspects that could influence the saffron yield, including planting depth and planting period as well as the application of a combination of fertilizers, mycorrhizal fungi and biostimulants at planting. Since temperature strongly influences saffron flowering, continuous monitoring of soil temperatures was carried out throughout the year, along with a weekly monitoring of flower initiation from May to August. Both leaf and flower emergence were delayed, and final emergence reduced as planting depth increased. Planting at 10 or 15 cm seems preferable but stimulates the production of corms too small to flower. The best planting period is from the end of July until the third week of August. Fertilization hastened leaf emergence in the autumn and improved corm production and their nutrient content. The addition of mycorrhizal fungal spores as well as biostimulants had no effect on flowering or saffron yield. All treatments combined; flower production was good in only one of the three study years. It seems that the soil does not warm enough in July during flower induction. Moreover, in the study area, temperatures drop too rapidly during autumn, which delays flowering and reduces yields. It is proposed to cultivate saffron in more southern areas and to use techniques aimed at soil warming in order to increase saffron yields in Quebec.

Full textThis thesis is an exploration to operationalize the concept of Sustainable Forest Management, overcoming the prospects offered by the concept of Sustained Yield. In this context, the approach is not to calculate the evolution of production volumes of wood to ensure a constant flow, but to define by the diversity of stakeholders, the consistency in the development of multiple forest activities. This approach requires an associated lighting expert knowledge but also knowledge from actors in forestry and governance stakeholders to understand the effects of such developments in the area. The reality on the ground shows that the concern of forest stakeholders goes beyond the preservation of wood volumes. Thus, forest sustainability encompasses other non-timber and non-monetary values and uses. An evaluation of these other values cannot be achieved without the creation of a participatory process whose aim is to build preferences by the actors themselves. Thus, Sustainable Forest Management becomes a social choice problem to identify acceptable forms of development by local actors. This research will strive to highlight the societal preferences on the pilot territory of Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean by a deliberative approach and multimedia tools of mediation of knowledge

Full textThe Outaouais Region (13760 km²) is one of the most rapidly growing communities in Quebec, and where groundwater is increasingly being relied upon as a water supply. The permeability of the mostly crystalline bedrock is controlled by interconnected fractures and then heterogeneous. In order to identify target areas for installing new pumping wells, specific capacity data from the SIH database, which were validated using pumping tests carried out by Université Laval, were compared with rock characteristics including lithology, thickness of rock exploited by each well and proximity to lineaments. The texture and mineralogy of the rock seemed to have an important influence on the development of permeable fractures. We also found that the fracture density decreases with depth and therefore it is not always profitable to drill to deeper depths (> 80 m) to try to increase productivity. In contrast, proximity to lineaments didn’t seem to have any impact on the productivity of wells.

Full textThe aim of this research project was to assess the effect of cultivar and seeding rate on yield, yield components and some grain quality characteristics of spring and winter spelt in all three agro-climatic areas for cereal production in Québec in a low input system. The seeding rate generally did not affect hulled grain, naked grain and straw yields of spring spelt. Increasing seeding rate resulted in increased spike density, decreased number of grains per spike while thousand grain weight remained unaffected. CDC Origin and CDC Silex produced the highest hulled grain yields at two of the three sites and protein content of all cultivars was high (14.2 to 15.4 %). Winter survival of winter spelt was inconsistent throughout years and sites. Seeding rate had no effect on winter spelt yields. Cultivar Cosmos generally produced the highest hulled and naked grain yields whereas protein content varied from 9.6 to 16.9 % among cultivars and years.

Full textDropping out of school can seriously affect employment possibilities and social integration. There are tools to investigate and measure the level of risk of dropping out. Academic performances and behaviour problems are well documented risk factors. Impulsivity and risk taking can lead to problematic behaviour. Certain studies have looked into the impact of stress on the dropping out process, but its impact on academic performances, impulsivity and risk taking has never been evaluated directly with the risk level of dropping out. Objective and hypothesis : The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of stress on academic performances, impulsivity and risk taking and to measure the relation of this impact with the risk level of dropping out of school. The hypothesis is that higher the risk level, higher the negative impact stress will have on our measures of academic performance, impulsivity and risk taking. Method : 37 young adults between 15 and 20 years old with no diploma took part in the study. After measuring the risk level of dropping out, a full characterization was made followed by academic performance, impulsivity and risk taking tasks before and after a social stress condition, the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Results : Our salivary cortisol samples show that the TSST did not produce a significant change in levels of stress to adequately test our hypothesis. Our results show a significant interaction between impulsivity and the risk level of dropping out. Furthermore, the relation between risk taking and impulsivity in our results is interesting Conclusion : The objective of this project could not be adequately tested since the stress condition didn't produce a significant stress reaction, as measured by salivary cortisol. The level of risk of dropping out was significantly correlated with impulsivity, but not risk taking, nor academic performances.

The joint analysis of the results of the questionnaire and the interviews revealed that the professionals' practices are partially rigorous in evaluating campaign effectiveness, since they have shortcomings in both measuring target audience reactions and behavioral results. This conclusion is based on five main observations: (1) professionals do not systematically carry out an evaluation of campaigns and, when they do, it is mainly in the short term after their deployment; (2) the indicators and methods used to assess the reactions rarely cover the target audience involvement phase; (3) frequent use of popularity statistics for an Internet campaign provides irrelevant data for measuring audience reactions; (4) the indicators used to measure the behavioral change process are not systematically used and (5) professionals often rely on subjective methods based on selfreported measures by the target audience. Moreover, the interviews revealed the tendency of professionals to select certain data and/or interpret them to their advantage, which may lead to declaring campaigns that are not effective in reality. In addition, the study reveals that social advertising professionals have a tenuous connection to the world of scientific research. The transfer and use of scientific knowledge are infrequent and, when carried out, it is primarily for utilitarian purposes. In other words, scientific knowledge is generally not used to guide policy and creative decisions downstream, but rather to support them upstream. Finally, the study offers an important theoretical contribution by proposing a new conceptual and operational framework for the evaluation of social advertising campaigns. Clarifying what an effective social advertising campaign is and establishing an accurate categorization of indicators and methods for evaluating it, this framework provides a clear distinction between the target audience reactions and the behavioral results of a campaign. These are two concepts that have suffered from significant imprecision in scientific literature so far. The reactions assessment is based on a new three-phrase model. This is the result of the merging of hierarchical and non-hierarchical models of information processing. The evaluation of behavioral results, for its part, is rooted in a theoretical model that is proven empirically – the Fishbein and Ajzen (2010)’s reasoned action approach – of which it breaks down each of the variables to make five indicators of advertising effectiveness.

Social advertising, which is part of the broader field of social marketing, occupies a significant part of the marketing communications industry in Quebec. Tens of millions of dollars are invested every year for advertising campaigns that promote multiple social and environmental causes. If social advertisers choose this persuasive form of communication, it is because they are convinced that it is effective in encouraging the adoption of "good" behaviors or the abandonment of "bad" behaviors among the targeted audience. Nevertheless, this assertion inevitably raises questions: is the effectiveness of social advertising campaigns evaluated? If so, what indicators and methods are used to support these evaluations? Are they linked to the latest evidence based on scientific research? Two findings emerge from the scientific literature: the lack of consensus on what constitutes an effective campaign and how to evaluate this effectiveness, as well as the lack of empirical data on professional evaluation practices. Such findings naturally lead to question the dynamics of exchange between scientific research and social advertising professionals. Is the scientific data transferred to the professionals? If so, do they incorporate them into their practices? Once again, a review of the literature shows that up until now, these issues have been poorly documented on an empirical level. In this context, the study looked at the general issue of the link between knowledge generated from scientific research and the evaluation practices of social advertising campaigns in Quebec. Based on a mixed methods design, a questionnaire was first submitted to sixty-two social advertising professionals working in the province of Quebec. Its purpose was to establish a quantitative profile of their practices with respect to campaign evaluation and the transfer and use of scientific knowledge. Twenty-three professionals then took part in oneon- one interviews to further explore the reasons behind these practices.

Full textProtected culture such as high tunnels is a new technology to improve red raspberry crop production under Northern climates as found in Quebec, Canada. The main objective of this Ph.D. research was to assess the performance of high tunnels vs. Voen shelters, a novel umbrella-shaped cover structure, in comparison to open field cultivation, in terms of microclimate, photosynthetic performance, plant growth, and fruit yield for both floricane- and primocane-fruiting types of red raspberries (Rubus idaeus, L.). As cultural management practices need to be tailored to the different modified growing environments, relevant practices like summer pruning (for floricane-fruiting cultivar), cane density optimization (for primocane-fruiting cultivar) and reflective mulch (for both fruiting types) were tested under high tunnel and Voen shelter vs. open field. Plants grown under high tunnel produced on average 1.2 and 1.5 times more marketable fruit yield than under Voen shelter for floricane-fruiting cv. ‘Jeanne d’Orléans’ and primocane-fruiting cv. ‘Polka’, respectively. Compared to plants grown in open field, the fruit yield of high tunnel-grown plants was more than double for cv. ‘Jeanne d’Orléans’ and almost three times higher for cv. ‘Polka’. The use of reflective mulch had a significant positive effect on fruit yield, namely 12% for cv. ‘Jeanne d’Orléans’ and 17% for cv. ‘Polka’. Pruning the first or second flush of stems from the rhizome significantly improved fruit yield of cv. ‘Jeanne d’Orléans’ by 26% on average compared to unpruned plants. As cane density increased, the fruit yield of cv. ‘Polka’ increased significantly, namely by 43% and 71% for a cane density of 4 and 6 canes per pot, respectively, as compared to the standard lower cane density of 2 canes per pot. During the fruiting period of cv. ‘Jeanne d’Orléans’, reflective ground cover significantly increased the photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) reflected to the lower canopy by 80% in open field and 60% under high tunnel, compared to only 14% under Voen shelter. During the fruiting season of cv. ‘Polka’, a positive reflective mulch effect on the reflected light (up to 42%) was only found in open field. In all cases, ground cover had no significant effect on the total leaf PPFD and photosynthesis under any growing conditions. For cv. ‘Jeanne d’Orléans’, the leaf PPFD was attenuated by approx. 46% under both types of protective covering compared to open field. Correspondingly, photosynthesis was on average reduced by 43% under high tunnel and by 17% under Voen shelter. Cultivar ‘Polka’ plants shared a similar growing condition effects on leaf PPFD and photosynthesis. Despite the fact that lower individual leaf photosynthetic rates were consistently measured in tunnel-grown plants, once leaf-level photosynthesis was scaled up to the whole canopy, the photosynthetic production of tunnel-grown plants was found to be 51% higher than that observed in open field for cv. ‘Jeanne d’Orléans’, and 46% higher for cv. ‘Polka’. This was explained by the greater (nearly twice) leaf area of tunnel-grown plants, which compensated for their lower photosynthetic rate per unit leaf area, the latter being caused by the supra-optimal leaf temperatures found under high tunnel (6.6°C higher on average than in open field) as well as the attenuation of the leaf PPFD (approx. 43%) by the tunnel coverings. Whole-canopy photosynthesis was positively correlated with fruit yield for both fruiting types of red raspberry, whether cultivated under high tunnel or in open field.

Full textFusarium head blight (FHB) is a fungal disease of cereal crops in Quebec. The objectives of this project were to check the influence of four factors (weather, cultivar, seeding date, fungicide application) on wheat yield and quality, and to evaluate the performance of nine forecasting models of FHB. During two years, at four experimental sites in Quebec, trials of spring and winter wheat have been implemented to establish a set of meteorological, phenological and epidemiological data. A fungicide application reduced deoxynivalenol content in grains in nine out of twelve trials and increased yields in seven trials. In addition, the American and Argentinean forecasting models performed better than the Canadian and Italian models when their decision threshold was adjusted and the development of wheat was observed in the field.

Full textThis study's main objective was to determine in what ways are characterized pupils aged 12 and 13 years attending the “Cheminement particulier continu” (CPC) regarding their math skills, their reading skills, their working memory, their visuo-spatial as well as their attention abilities. This study was also to assess the relationship between math skills and these different variables. The third objective was to compare student performance of CPC with a diagnosis of attention deficit disorder / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to those obtained by the CPC students without a diagnosis of ADHD in respect to the variables measured. Finally, we also wanted to compare result of the CPC student that are medicated for their ADHD to result of the CPC student that are not medicated for their ADHD. Forty students from 12 and 13 years of CPC were assess in this study. The results show that CPC students were significantly lower, with respect to five variables, than the students of the same age who do not have learning disabilities. No significant correlation was found between math skills and the study’s variables and between the different variables when used in conjunction with each other. In addition, the results show that CPC students with ADHD achieve similar results in the five variables under study that CPC students without ADHD. Finally, the results tell us that CPC students with ADHD medicated achieve results similar in the five variables under study that CPC students that are not medicated for their ADHD.

In this thesis, we examine perseverance and dropout factors related to recently immigrated Haitians in the province of Québec and New York State. A review of the literature reveals a lack of documentation on this issue. A conceptual framework was thus devised to better address these factors and to analyse and synthesise several theoretical approaches such as those regarding immigrants and educational attainment (Rong and Brown, 2001; Warikoo and Carter, 2009; Xie and Greenman, 2011), forms of social capital (Bourdieu, 1979a, 1979b, 1980), social groups and roles (Merton, 1965), and the school-effect/teacher-effect (Crahay, 2000; Bressoux, 1994a). Also exposed are two comprehensive approaches, namely, interactionism (Weber, 1959; Boudon, 1979, 1994; Goffman, 1998; Garfinkel, 1967) and the ESCOL group’s theory on the relationship with knowledge (Rochex, 2002; Charlot, 2003), with the goal of bringing to light the relative nature of the conclusions of qualitative research focused on participant subjectivity in the analysis of social activity. For this study, eleven people (seven men and four women) from Montréal and Brooklyn were interviewed. Each participant had experienced school dropout at either the secondary school or adult education level. The semi-structured interview was chosen as the data collection method and data analysis was performed thematically. Data analysis made it possible to categorise the resulting data under five headings: economic capital, cultural capital, social capital, institutional supervision, and specific factors. These five groups contain the perseverance and dropout factors expressed by the participants in this study. The results of this study shed significant light on the issues relative to the dropout dynamics of first-generation young and young adult Haitian immigrants in the province of Québec and the State of New York at both the secondary school and adult education levels. Our findings were compared with those of the reviewed literature on the subject as well as within the conceptual framework of this thesis. The synthesised results thus lead us to propose an analysis model which can be referred to as an « academic revival of newly immigrated Haitian students in the province of Québec and the New York State ». The analysis and synthesis of the factors emerging from this thesis, and more specifically the six themes describing the specific factors (demography, personal motivation, basic challenges, affective aspects, personality traits, and behavioural issues) enabled us to develop another concept which may represent a significant contribution to the perseverance in school of Haitian new arrivals: psycho-integrational supervision, a form of mentoring provided for these young and young adult students to better guide their socioeducational development and academic perseverance in their new home. Psycho-integrational supervision will consist of identifying certain psychological factors affecting young and young adult Haitian students prior to their arrival in relation to the social elements affecting their lives in their adopted country. This personalised assistance will be made possible with the support and involvement of the State, social integration instances, and schools. The principal instigators, notably psychologists, social workers, and social anthropologists will thus seek to better understand and guide new arrivals in terms of behaviours to adopt to nurture effective socio-cultural, professional, and economical growth.

Full textCroBas-PipeQual is a process-based forest growth model designed to study foliage development and how growth processes relate to changes in wood quality. As such, CroBas-PipeQual is of interest as a component model in a forest level decision support model for value assessment. In this thesis, the version of CroBas-PipeQual calibrated for jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) in Québec, Canada was qualitatively evaluated for use in forest management decision-making. Then, sensitivity analyses and Bayesian melding were used to create and calibrate a stand-level version of CroBas-PipeQual to local empirical height yield models in a hybrid-modelling approach. Key findings included: 1. Height predictions were most sensitive to input values and to parameters related to net photosynthesis; 2. Model performance was improved by varying two net-productivity parameters with site quality; and 3. Model performance needs further improvement before CroBas-PipeQual can be used as a component of a forest-management decision tool.
