Avhandlingen viser at måltidet er en sentral del av folks hverdagsliv. Måltidet har betydelige kulturelle, sosiale og emosjonelle potensialer. <p>Avhandlingen handler om ledelse av kunnskapsarbeid, og sykehuset brukes som arena for å utforske dette temaet. Utgangspunktet for studien er Spesialisthelsetjenesteloven fra 2001, som påla sykehusene å innføre enhetlig ledelse på alle nivåer. Denne reformen ses som et eksempel på hvordan en New Public Management (NPM)- inspirert styringsforståelse kommer inn i sykehuset. Sykehuset er preget av det medisinske fagfeltets forståelser av fag, organisasjon og ledelse, og disse utfordres på flere måter gjennom ledelsesreformen og de forståelser den bygger på. Temaet følger av en interesse som ble vekket gjennom David Lockwoods «Solidarity and Schism», der forståelsen av ordensproblematikk i durkheimiansk og marxistisk teori diskuteres i lys av mangelfulle hypoteser på uorden eller konflikt. Hovedpersonene Liv og Ølgjer blir spionert på av en tohodet vi-forteller gjennom hele romanen. Samtidig observerer både Liv og Ølgjer seg selv utenfra og reflekterer over hvordan de fremstår (eller ønsker å fremstå).
