Abstract:
Transport of electronic spins in low-dimensional and nanoscale systems is the subject of thenovel and quickly developing eld of spintronics. The possibility of coherent spin manipulationrepresents an ultimate goal of this eld. Typically, spin transport is strongly aected by couplingof spin and orbital degrees of freedom. The inuence of the spin orbit interaction is twofold. The momentum relaxation due to the scattering of carriers, inevitably leads to spin relaxationand destroys the spin coherence. On the other hand, the controlled orbital motion of carrierscan result in a coherent motion of their spins. Thus, the spin orbit coupling is envisaged as apossible tool for spin controling in electronic devices. In particular, it is possible to generatespin polarization and spin currents by applying electric eld, the phenomenon known as thespin-Hall eect (SHE) [1- 3]. The eect is manifested in the form of a spin current directedperpendicular to the normal current, which takes place in an electric eld.

Abstract:
AbstractIdentifying the trajectory and spin of the ball with speed and accuracy is critical for good performance in table tennis. The aim of this study was to analyze the ability of table tennis players presenting different levels of training/experience to identify the magnitude of the ball spin from the sound produced when the racket hit the ball. Four types of “forehand” contact sounds were collected in the laboratory, defined as: Fast Spin (spinning ball forward at 140 r/s); Medium Spin (105 r/s); Slow Spin (84 r/s); and Flat Hit (less than 60 r/s). Thirty-four table tennis players of both sexes (24 men and 10 women) aged 18-40 years listened to the sounds and tried to identify the magnitude of the ball spin. The results revealed that in 50.9% of the cases the table tennis players were able to identify the ball spin and the observed number of correct answers (10.2) was significantly higher (χ2 = 270.4, p <0.05) than the number of correct answers that could occur by chance. On the other hand, the results did not show any relationship between the level of training/experience and auditory perception of the ball spin. This indicates that auditory information contributes to identification of the magnitude of the ball spin, however, it also reveals that, in table tennis, the level of training does not interfere with the auditory perception of the ball spin.

Abstract:
Abstract Phonon properties have been studied using reduced sound velocity of Eu0.5Ba0.5TiO3 (EBTO). To achieve this aim, the anharmonic phonon-phonon interaction and the spin-phonon interaction were used. It was shown that the reduced sound velocity of multiferroic EBTO exhibits a kink at TN = 1.9 K. This anomalously reduced sound velocity can be interpreted as an effect of vanishing magnetic ordering above TN. What’s more, the ferroelectric subsystem cannot be influenced by the magnetic subsystem above TN for TN ≪TC in the EBTO. It was found that the reduced sound velocity decreases as T increases near ferroelectric transition TC. That is to say, the sound velocity softens near ferroelectric transition TC. It is also noteworthy that the reduced sound velocity softens when the RE (the coupling between the ferroelectric pseudo-spins and phonons), V(3) and |V(4)| (the third- and fourth-order atomic force constants of the anharmonic phonons, respectively) increase. These conclusions are all in good accordance with the experimental data and theoretical results.

Abstract:
Purpose The study investigated the effect of a short computer-based environmental sound training regimen on the perception of environmental sounds and speech in experienced cochlear implant (CI) patients. Method Fourteen CI patients with the average of 5 years of CI experience participated. The protocol consisted of 2 pretests, 1 week apart, followed by 4 environmental sound training sessions conducted on separate days in 1 week, and concluded with 2 posttest sessions, separated by another week without training. Each testing session included an environmental sound test, which consisted of 40 familiar everyday sounds, each represented by 4 different tokens, as well as the Consonant Nucleus Consonant (CNC) word test, and Revised Speech Perception in Noise (SPIN-R) sentence test. Results Environmental sounds scores were lower than for either of the speech tests. Following training, there was a significant average improvement of 15.8 points in environmental sound perception, which persisted 1 week later after training was discontinued. No significant improvements were observed for either speech test. Conclusions The findings demonstrate that environmental sound perception, which remains problematic even for experienced CI patients, can be improved with a home-based computer training regimen. Such computer-based training may thus provide an effective low-cost approach to rehabilitation for CI users, and potentially, other hearing impaired populations.

Abstract:
Low-dimensional spin systems reveal new and unexpected physical phenomena such as distinct plateaus in the magnetization as a function of magnetic field. In this paper we present ultrasonic measurements for the quasi-two-dimensional spin system SrCu2(BO3)2 in magnetic fields up to 50 T. From this technique we obtained detailed information about the spin state, the magnetic excitations and their interaction with phonons. The dimerized quantum-spin system SrCu2(BO3)2 exhibits plateaus in the magnetization and shows surprisingly strong magneto-elastic effects as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The pronounced elastic anomalies indicate a resonant interaction between the sound wave and the magnetic excitations.

Bapat, Nikhil D. "Development of Sound Presentation System (SPS) for Characterization of Sound Induced Displacements in Tympanic Membranes." Digital WPI, 2011. https://digitalcommons.wpi.edu/etd-theses/1187.

Abstract:
The conventional methods for diagnosing pathological conditions of the tympanic membrane (TM) and other abnormalities require measuring its motion to an acoustic excitation for its use in a clinical environment. To obtain comprehensive quantitative diagnostic information from the motion of the entire surface of the TM, it is necessary to devise an integrated system capable of accurately recording the motion and induce an acoustic stimulus. To accomplish this goal, a sound presentation system (SPS) capable of impinging acoustic stimulus in the frequency range of 20Hz to 8 kHz at known amplitudes is synthesized in this thesis. This system is then integrated with optoelectronic digital holographic system (OEDHO) which utilizes laser interferometry to record and reconstruct phase shifted images with the help of a digital camera. The OEDHO is capable of accurately recording nanometer scale motion of the TM. The preliminary design of the SPS depends on the physical dimensions of the human ear, such as the diameter of the TM (6-9mm), depth of the ear canal (about 30mm), and also dimensions of the OEDHO system such as: diameter of tip of the otoscope head for optical access (8mm), and possible locations for integration with the OEDHO. The characteristics of the system are based on the intensity of the acoustic stimulus necessary to vibrate the TM (90-110dB SPL), and method of impinging the stimulus. To accomplish this goal, the nature of sound wave propagation through a circular pipe with known dimensions is analyzed analytically, experimentally, and by using finite element analysis (FEA). The pipe is further investigated for optimum parameters using FEA by introducing changes in the diameter (3.8mm, 6mm, 10mm), length of the pipe (30mm, 60mm, 90mm), radius of the curvature (50mm, 75mm, 100mm), and strength of the sound power source (0.2W, 0.4W, 0.6W). The comparative results provide guidelines for the design of the first version of the SPS (SPS_V1). The SPS_V1 consists of a symmetric design to impinge the acoustic stimulus towards the TM and a microphone to measure the sound pressure at the TM. The system is capable of housing a range of speakers from 2mm to 15mm in diameter. The SPS_V1 can directly interface with the standard medical speculums used for human ear testing. Also, the system is capable of interfacing with all available versions of the OEDHO. The SPS_V1 is currently being evaluated in a medical-research environment to address basic otological questions regarding TM function. The performance characterization of the system inside an artificial ear canal with two different speaker configurations is herein shown, and the potential improvements and utilization are discussed

Abstract:
This thesis is focused on the relationship between cultural worlds and social transformations within contemporary British society. Our study is based on a differentiated approach where the analysis of popular music material, of its features and its functions merges with the emergence of new identity configurations in the UK. The main research focus is the production and consumption of Islamic conscious rap by Brasian Muslim youth, a category that has been recently introduced within the international debate on identity. Through their social and cultural experience Muslim young people of South Asian origin are at the forefront of a new cultural turn in the redefinition of postcolonial identity, also in relation to many other contemporary issues: colonialism, Diaspora, globalisation and migration. The process of cultural reterritorialisation together with that of cultural reproduction constantly change the cultural landscape of this youth: thank to their multicultural skills and their transcultural capital young Muslim people manage to balance within different cultural worlds, and Islamic rap is here considered as link with the translocal Muslim Ummah. This work's aim is to describe the reconfiguration of translocal scenarios through the processes of cultural respatialization and retorritorialisation through the musical medium within the local-global nexus.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractA precise static data-flow analysis transforms the program into a context-sensitive and field-sensitive approximation of the program. It is challenging to design an analysis of this precision efficiently due to the fact that the analysis is undecidable per se. Synchronized pushdown systems (SPDS) present a highly precise approximation of context-sensitive and field-sensitive data-flow analysis. This chapter presents some data-flow analyses that SPDS can be used for. Further on, this chapter summarizes two other contributions of the thesis “Synchronized Pushdown System for Pointer and Data-Flow Analysis” called Boomerang and IDEal. Boomerang is a demand-driven pointer analysis that builds on top of SPDS and minimizes the highly computational effort of a whole-program pointer analysis by restricting the computation to the minimal program slice necessary for an individual query. IDEal is a generic and efficient framework for data-flow analyses, e.g., typestate analysis. IDEal resolves pointer relations automatically and efficiently by the help of Boomerang. This reduces the burden of implementing pointer relations into an analysis. Further on, IDEal performs strong updates, which makes the analysis sound and precise.

Abstract:
This chapter studies how systems wiggle, and how they respond and dissipate energy when kicked. The wiggling fluctuations are described using correlation functions, the yielding and dissipation are described using susceptibilities. The intricate relations between these quantities are explored using the Onsager regression hypothesis, fluctuation--response and fluctuation--dissipation theorems, and the Kramers--Krönig relation derived from causality (the response cannot precede the kick). The powerful tools of linear response theory described here are basic tools in our exploration of materials with scattering of sound, light, X-rays, and neutrons, and have become our primary description of the behavior of materials. Exercises describe applications to noise in nanojunctions, humans on subways, magnetic spins, molecular dynamics and Ising models, liquids and magnets, materials at critical points, and fluctuations in the early Universe.

Abstract:
James David Wolfensohn is a surprising figure. A wildly successful investment banker, he nonetheless found time to take up the cello in middle life; he would cross the Atlantic on Concorde, buying two seats so that his cello could fly with him. A corporate insider, he nonetheless identified with the world’s least fortunate; he took an interest in international family planning, the environment, and AIDS, even as he was merging and restructuring the world’s leading companies. Appointed to lead a World Bank known chiefly for prescribing macro-economic austerity, Wolfensohn distanced the institution from both macro-economics and prescriptions. He spoke the language of poverty-fighting groups such as Oxfam, and demanded social justice; and after his first press conference, the World Bank’s chief spin doctor, who was concerned that the Bank not be seen as ‘soft’, remarked that Wolfensohn had not been ‘on message’. ‘He’s the President,’ another official said. ‘I think you’ll find that is the message.’ Since that exchange in 1995, Wolfensohn has reshaped the Bank, a formidable, sprawling institution with nearly ten thousand employees and projects in about one hundred countries. The emphasis on macro-economic structural adjustment, which had dominated the Bank’s programmes since the start of the 1980s, was phased out; questions of governance— the transparency of political institutions, the level of corruption, the quality of judicial or media or civil society oversight—came to preoccupy the Bank almost as much as price signals and sound budgeting. Before Wolfensohn’s arrival, the Bank’s apolitical charter was thought to put these governance issues at least partially off limits. But in a speech in 1966, Wolfensohn denounced ‘the cancer of corruption’, and a taboo that had lasted since the Bank’s creation in 1944 was abruptly shattered. Wolfensohn’s focus on poverty and social justice come through strongly in his contribution to this volume. Before his arrival at the Bank, the institution was often vilified for technocratic elitism: its officials’ idea of ‘field work’ was a meeting with a finance minister in a five-star hotel, according to the critics. But in this lecture we find Wolfensohn recounting the life of a poor mother in a Brazilian slum, and explaining that the worst feature of poverty is ‘voicelessness’.
