Phongsavanh, Thitphrachanh kay. "La souffrance morale au travail." Thesis, Avignon, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015AVIG2045/document.
Full textThe moral suffering in the workplace has already been mentioned by Dr. Villermé in the 19th century, it rises from the ashes whenever difficult times in the economy or politics arise. Understanding the psychological mechanisms are required for the law to assign the most appropriate legal qualification. The damage that is caused to the worker must then find a compensation corresponding to the damage. The creation of a specific prejudice station dedicated to psychological disorders is an approach that I have tried to put in place for its recognition as a lesion is appreciated just as a physical wound. The "psychometer" (scales of assessments of psychological disorders) rested on a proven set of methods and scientific technics. At present, these methods allow us to assess and evaluate with great precision the psychological suffering of the worker at work. The degree of pain, intensity and disability of the employee by an expert allows us to assign a compensation for the damage based on a specific schedule that I developed for psychological disorders. Thus , the prevention of risks should be the approach of all social enterprises and the partnerships (Unions and employers). As a result, the skills of experts from the medical world, ergonomics, law, etc. must be collected to achieve the objectives. The role of the employer, the CHSCT and the Institution Staff Representative is essential in the process of prevention of occupational hazards
Genest, Christian. "La souffrance éthique dans le travail des médecins." Thesis, Université Laval, 2012. http://www.theses.ulaval.ca/2012/29121/29121.pdf.
Full textThe studies to be presented in this thesis can raise awareness on possible mental health problems, in regard to work, that are related to the medical profession. Moreover, this situation appears to be widespread, as in Europe, the United States, in Canada as in Quebec. In this regard, the report of The Quebec Physician’s Health Program (QPHP) confirmed difficulties of this order encountered in Quebec physicians, stating that the number of requests for assistance is constantly increasing. Beyond the individual aspects, and to understand the suffering at work, recent researches indicate the importance of taking into account the context of work in which medicine is practiced today: institutional and organizational elements, and elements related to medical practice and medical culture. It does seem that certain aspects proper to the medical work deserve to be investigated differently. In our view, the ethical dilemmas faced by physicians every day often place them in a difficult and delicate position, coming in conflict with what they are like in "subject", "self"; also in contradiction with their medical training and ultimately in contradiction with the oath to which they have committed. According to our assumption, these dilemmas would be too often involved in a type of suffering qualified as ethical. By the use of doctors “narratives of practice” willing to reveal the sources of that suffering, and by the conceptual analysis of the psychodynamics of work (Dejours & Deranty, 2010), it appears that a different understanding could shed light on this painful reality. The thesis identifies three typical-situations, which enable to visualize the nature of ethical suffering: we have named "the noose is tightening", a "constant battle" and an "imposed collaboration". Overall, the gaps that develop between the demands from the various organisms that govern the medical profession, the patient needs and the values (professional and personal) of physicians often lead them to opt for challenging decisions where different logics become hardly reconcilable. Ethic suffering arising from such decisions will have a significant incidence on how they are as “subject” and as health professionals, in brief about their identity.

Full textThe purpose of this research is to study the origins and psychosocial consequences of the working situations leading to stress and mental suffering. It is looking primarily at how the psychological contract has been impacted by the changes that have evolved in the working environment in the past years. It is more particularly centered on the mental processes through which a breach of the psychological contract is being perceived and on the processes that are applied to cope with this altered employment relationship. From a theoretical standpoint, this research departs from the traditional approach to occupational stress insofar as it integrates subjective dynamics into the study of stress and suffering at work. Our theory suggests that the heterogeneous experiences and temporalities of employees have an influence on the organizational socialization as well as on the development of the employment relationship and the subjective regulation of conflicts. A local public hospital service offering psychological care for people suffering from their working situation provide the frame of the research. The information collected via this clinical work done with 103 persons is used for the qualitative and quantitative data analyses. The clinical observations are systematically compared to the results of the statistical analysis. We establish a link between the perception of a violation of the psychological contract and the deterioration of the mental health of the persons received in this psychological care center. We underline the impact of the contract’s breach, often a consequence of changes occurring in the working environment, on the individual as well as on the employment relationship. The empirical and the statistical results emphasize the need for the development and the implementation of psychosocial risks prevention measures by multidisciplinary working groups
CASTILHOS, KARAM HELIETE MARIA. "Travail, souffrance, silence analyse psychodynamique et nouvelles orientations therapeutiques de l'alcoolisme." Paris, CNAM, 1997. http://www.theses.fr/1997CNAM0282.
Full textThe author brings up its clinical experience in the brazilian oil industry, to conduct a psychodynamic study of the links between alcoholism and alcoholic behavior in work environment, where silence was at the center of a typical labour suffering. Integrated at the work organization, the circuit of this suffering went through family, where wife and children were appealed. The author relies on the theory in psychodynamic labor for which resistance to change refers to a form of organized resistance to collectively fight against suffering in order to execute the compagny tasks. The author shows that alcohol is then one of the means, perhaps the most powerful one, used by the workers to resist the pathogenicals labour effects. Alcoholism appears as a part of a representation system which interpretation is impossible without the analysis of labour and its links with the worker's family. Therefore, the interventions on alcoholism and its primary prevention in work environment, will have to be rethought - which allows to consider new therapeutic approaches

Full textDebates in the media oppose workers psychology against working conditions. A review of studies by sociologists of work shows that it is possible to articulate these opposing elements differently, based on various causalities: anomie, a deregulation that blurs the limits (Durkheim); a specific, meaningless company language (Gaulejac); a repression of thought (Dejours).Freud and Lacan are both readers of Marx. Freud makes him an adversary who disregards the death drive whilst Lacan pays him a strong homage, retracing in his footsteps the Hegelian dialectic of master and slave thanks to the paradigm of discourses. Two major concepts can be deduced from this: the master-signifier, which demonstrates the injunctive power of language, and the surplus-jouissance, the counterpart of the restrictions imposed on jouissance that Lacan makes the very principle of capitalism. However, science and the financialisation of contemporary economics pulverise the discourse, eradicating the subject in favour of accounting, removing any barrier to jouissance, which has become an inalienable right. The reign of numbers only allows us to think in terms of a continuity that unfolds ad infinitum (1 + 1 + 1 +…) and no longer of opposing elements (allowed / forbidden) that are likely to put limits on excess.Leaving a capitalist discourse supposes a new way of handling of the language. By making resonate the hitherto concealed jouissance, the psychoanalyst gives everyone a chance to reappropriate their own language and thereby to say no to always-more. The desire which arises creates a new social bond and makes it possible to think of an alternative political system to the globalized governance by numbers
Hoummani, Mounia. "Souffrance psychique au travail en milieu universitaire au Maroc et en France : impact du changement organisationnel." Amiens, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011AMIE0023.
Full textThe issue of mental suffering is ubiquitous at work as evidenced by the recent controversies related to suicides int the workplace. Physical suffering is moving towards a psychological suffering. In this thesis we ask the question: how is mental suffering, and how does it appear ? Our hypothesis is: Organizational changes generate mental suffering manifested by particular reactions in Morocco and France. There are many difference in how to experiment that, according to the personality and its impact on the self-image. Our research focuses on the administrative staff of two universities in France and Morroco. Analysis of the data to a questionnaire, interviews and NEO PI-R shows that suffering is little expressed at work in Morocco, also there is individual and personal problems related to intimate situation of each one next to the dissatisfaction, whereas mental suffering is manifested by the devaluation of the self-image in France
Paris, EHESS, 1997. http://www.theses.fr/1997EHES0048.
Full textThis thesis deals with forms of commitment and self realization in production processes, their historical transformations and the related pains. The first part, concerning a long-term approach, tackles with three sociological paradigms. Three socio-historical configurations appear concerning specific forms of pain at work: industrial alienation developed by karl marx ; rationalization and bureaucratic dehumanization in the post-war sociology ; isolation and insecurity due to uncontrolled commitment in recent sociological and psycho-dynamical approaches. The normative anthropological points of view supporting these paradigms are examined. The second part of the thesis, based on an ethnographic survey carried out in a belgian metallurgical enterprise, aims at identifying more precisely the recent changes of trials at work. The hypothesis affirms that present de-formalization of trials at work results in an enlargement of their consequences, and in a transformation of the personal dramatization. After a pattern of self-realization based on conventional norms interiorization, a new transactional pattern develops. The survey, mainly carried out in two workshops and with foremen, combines observations, interviews, and historical reconstruction. In conclusion, an uncertain and ambiguous de-formalization of industrial trials appears. It shows the risks of personal destabilization and collective splits caused by such an uncertainty. The biography of a technician who "sank into despair" at work eventually shows that new pains appear in a flexible organization, and that there is a lack of criticism in order to fight against them

Full textIn 1996, the universal conscription has been replaced by a new form of military organization: the voluntary enlistment. Then, the professionalization of the military institutions appears, soldiers are not conscripted anymore, but choose to enlist in the French Land Army, considering it as a possible career path. Therefore, the apprehension of the military profession as a common profession may be questioned. Can we really consider the military profession as a profession practiced in the civilian sphere? Can we analyze work conditions and prevent the psychosocial risks in the same way as for the other professions? This last question constitutes the real challenge of our research. In order to answer these questions, we took an interest in the military specificity that we defined and examined during the course of a study about social representations of the military profession. The results are useful to understand that a set of elements characterizing the military profession exists, and these elements, if they are co-present, could characterize only the military profession and thus make it specific compared to the other professions. Then, we focused on the soldiers' reasons to enlist in the French Land Army and their involvement once they are enlisted. Another study has been conducted and allowed us to distinguish different reasons for enlistment depending on the time the soldiers enlisted themselves. Differences in terms of involvement have also been observed. The results we have observed in the two first studies made us conclude that the military profession cannot be apprehended in the same way as for the other professions. To prevent the psychosocial risks that are specific to the military profession, we needed detection tools that were particular to the military institution. In the last part of this research, we created a detection tool for the military psychosocial risks, using the elements highlighted in the previous studies. The tool has been tested and a first diagnostic in a population of 2000 militaries has been realized

Full textDrawing on a clinical approach to actor's work based on the clinical and theoretical principles of work psychodynamics, and on two surveys and individual research interviews, this thesis sets out to test and to discuss psychoanalytic approaches to work and artistic activity, and to further the reflection on work in psychoanalysis initiated by the field of work psychodynamics. As a first step, we will examine elements contextualizing the actor's work and profession. We will first look at the profession's history and practices, including the degree to which labor organizations, the actor's "condition," and the nature of the trade varied over time, fostering a professional culture, and influencing the contemporary theater and the actor's craft. We will then look at a few theories of acting before focusing on the framework in which performers work today, drawing on sociological studies of actors and performers, and of the French unemployment insurance scheme for intermittent performers, which structures employment and work as an actor in France today. This chapter will be a historical but also trans-disciplinary journey through the craft and work of the actor, which will take us to the edge of "living labor". To get to the heart of the matter, we will need to take a methodological detour through the theoretical and clinical principles of the psychodynamics of work used to grasp our subject. The third step will be devoted to a psychodynamic analysis of actor's work, as it appears through surveys and research interviews. This clinical approach will provide support to discuss, in a fourth phase, psychoanalytical approaches to actor's work and to artistic work more generally. Using the case of actors' work, this chapter continues the discussion between work psychodynamics and psychoanalysis around work-related issues. The issues raised by this research have repercussions for several different fields: - It represents an as-of-yet unexplored field of work dynamics, a source of new knowledge and a new challenge for the clinical and theoretical principles of the discipline. - From a psychoanalytic perspective, putting actors' work and artistic work more generally under clinical scrutiny based on a theory of work raises important theoretical and clinical issues, in so far as we discuss the meaning of work for subjectivity and, consequently, the awareness of it in the analytic context, whether the patient practices an artistic activity or not. - For theatre and art studies, it is not impossible that this work-based approach to an artistic discipline and form of production constitutes a first milestone in the consideration of work in these theories, and a new development in the epistemological centrality of work

Full textIn France, 300 to 400 workers would die from suicide while being at work each year (Lauer, 2007). This dramatic figure seems to be underestimated and dejours (2005) highlights the lack of clear explanation of theses cases of on-the-job suicide that could be linked to social anxiety or discomfort. Indeed, the literature on this theme relates primarly to the analysis of work and its organization and not on the clinical psychology of the suffering subject on which we focus at our research center. As trained clinical psychologists, we met patients with suicidal behavior subjectively related to work. We emphasized on clinical interview to try to understand, through their speech, the causes underlying their intense suffering leading to suicide attempt and how it could be linked to the workplace conditions. 19 patients from various social and occupational groups have been followed-up through 45 minutes non directive interviews during a year and handwritten notes were typed-up at the end of each session. We used the qualitative analysis of Girogi (1988) work in phenomenologic psychology which consists in several reading and gathering in units of significance the main topicsevoked during the talks. We could identify three main topics i. E. Personal, professional and social and we tried to identify which one could weaken the patient or lead to suicidal attempt. New work organization, conditions and style of management and interpersonal relationships in the community often cause psychological distress among the workers. They touch the identity feeling of the subject, bringing to a feeling of exclusion from the work group and can awake a narcissic failure already present since childhood. If this one could not be elaborate, this suffering can carry out to suicidal behavior. Work brings the difficult construction of the regard of oneself, its stakes and its dead ends (Huez, 2003). When badly lived at work conflicts blend with private life, they can become pathological (Clot, 2002). Would the depression replace an inability to "being-in-the-world", which an lead to suicide when that becomes an impossibility to exist ? Work is reported by the patient as being the "last straw" leading them to try to commit suicide, reflecting the psychological defect, the personal sphere having already been previously collapsed. The social sphere acts like pressure on the other spheres (personal and professional) with the idea that social conditions do not allow "dream" anymore, because of the current economic system (rise of the oil price, lowers purchasing power etc), they can, consequently, generate a true social distress weakening the individual. Further results will come as the study is still going on about workplace bullying leading to specific suicidal attempt

Full textThe present Phd dissertation aims at confronting the growing number of legal work actions with a recession of collectives. It intends to check and understand the consequences of individualisation in the intense growth of problems named « psychosocial risks » nowadays. Such risks do not have a scientifically valid definition and cannot be easily appraised because of their dynamics. Approaching that object leads to question the perceptive implication of those who describe it : an overal view of all these problems never arises. The present dissertation notably questions a sociological non-considering of external agression and violence to the work field. It then aims at defining invariable elements across the entirety of those risks, at appreciating their common consequences in order to measure the importance of prevention by the collective. The recession of social linkage is not only examined in the field of work. The professional environment also strongly impacts the relations between workers. The ways to manage firms particularly weigh directly through requests for heavy implication in an intensification marked context of generalized competition. The interplay with that question of the collective is a central aspect : research work shows ho\v firms tend to master its effect. The present dissertation lastly considers the part played by specialized 'prevention' consultants so as to describe two spotable driftings: an administrative approach to these questions through measuring those risks or their psychologisation. The effect of such conducts results in avoiding to resort to a collective questioning

The superintendent ladies are the pioneers in the first half of the 20th century and from 1946, it is the occupational social workers that take over. This social function is diluted during the Thirty Glorious while reserving itself to take care individually and psychosocially to the most fragile wage earners. At the end of the eighties, the modernization of firms and of its management, require positioning different from the actors “human resources”. Logic of skill, individualization of the managerial practices, the new pathology, the suffering in work on one side and the deep changes in the society of the other one, disturb the practices of the occupational social workers and question strongly their missions. Full textThis research work deals with the intervention in prevention of occupational psychological health problems. It highlights the difficulties between knowing and doing: the biggest difficulties occur after diagnosis, when work situations and the organisation have to be substantially and permanently transformed. To reach this goal, a great deal of theoretical work has been carried out in order to identify in literature and analyse significant models of intervention for their coordination between a sound theoretical framework around the dynamics of occupational health (knowing) and a methodological framework of intervention (doing). We propose thus, through a literature review, three dimensions able to theorize the transition from knowledge to action, a transition which is understood as a social process as such and not as a methodological consequence. Those 3 dimensions, namely the object of the intervention, the level of involvement and the cognitive prevention process implemented with the actors, are at the heart of our work. Thanks to this theoretical and epistemological work, the designed methodological framework aims at developing scientifically this process, seeking its comprehensibility and the beginning of a work of predictability, and enabling reproducibility by other actors in the future. To that end, we present 3 studies, each firmly rooted in practice, within occupational health departments, and thus in the field. They study the effects of different linkages between the object of intervention, the level of involvement and the cognitive prevention process. The whole process fits into fundamental applied research and results in the proposal and the testing of a new model of prevention, which enables to go beyond the limits observed in literature. This new approach is characterised by this specific coordination and also by an innovative methodology that puts the intervention within a process of organisational innovation. Based on the implementation of a proximal zone of development, it allows the actors to develop transitional activities and is helpful in the difficulties they face in any prevention system. Eventually, this work opens new practical and scientific orientations, questions the stance of the occupational health professionals as well as the framework of practice of occupational psychologists

Full textThis study deals with the painfulness of work and focuses on psychic painfulness. It aims at distinguishing the psychic painfulness of the physical dimension in any sector of activity and understanding its articulation with stress and burnout in order to better understand its issues. Thus, 39 employees of an agro-alimentary industry and 32 employees of a company of service delivery participated in this study. The analyses diagnosed the presence of psychic painfulness in both sectors of activity and the results show that it constitutes one of the predictors of stress and burnout. This painfulness, distinct from the physical painfulness, is characterized at the agro-alimentary company P by indirect factors linked to the activity, such as the weight of the responsibility relating to the position held, the inexperience in a workstation, the fear of making a mistake that can cause heavy consequence for the company and the hyper-alertness imposed by the rhythm of the machine; and to the professional consular chamber A, it is characterized by a high pressure of work related to last-minute work, to the constraints of very short deadlines, to the work in the urgency, to considerable workload linked to the regular addition of files, to a highly directive management style, to an inappropriate work organization and to the lack of recognition of the work of certain socio-professional categories by the hierarchy. Furthermore, the job satisfaction and the meaning of work participate in the inter-individual variability of the psychic painfulness

Firstly, the study of the consequences of call center work for mental health. Secondly, the study of different approaches that support the development of ways to improve it such work. Work psychodynamics and activity ergonomics are two disciplines that propose different points of view on these issues. Nowadays, they both find themselves confronted by quantitative scales that seek to measure psychosocial risks. The aim of this thesis is to increase knowledge on the relationship between work organization and tasks content and highlight the consequences for workers in Argentina. Full textIn this thesis the author wonders about the real-life experience of suffering at work. We shah see how this real-life experience, which is revealed by the complaint, is the reflection of the Zeitgeist. Indeed, in a Manichean vision which belongs to a world where can proliferate destructivity as a symptom of a collective tragedy, we can consider that a collective Superego sets up itself as rampart against the aggressiveness of the individuals towards the powerful authorities which maintain this system. The question of its own peculiarity with regard to the community is also underlined and the way each one makes to exist, in particular by means of the suffering. And, because relationship of the individuals with their work appears to us to be the reflection of the postmodern mentalities, this one will constitute a privileged ground of observation. In counterweight, some Dionysian exuberance in the air as desire, for the individuals, to re-appropriate themselves as "Ego" singular in a culture dominated by the hyper-rationalism of the consciousnesses, could establish new forms of social relationships far away from what they were during the XIXth and XXth centuries. From a population of migrants chosen exactly because they also belong to another culture, in spite of their singular story and of their structuring with regard to this one, we shah see how the culture, through the collective values fias submitted the individual psyche

Occupational stress, or work suffering, of male nurses working in hospitals in Quebec is the central element studied in this thesis. Males remains a small minority in the nursing workforce, which may represent a source of stress in the workplace. Overall, sources of pleasure and suffering, ways to cope with suffering at work and male gender are the main concepts examined in this research. To access this information, semi-directed interviews were conducted with 20 male nurses from different hospitals in Quebec. The transcriptions were analyzed with the QDA Miner software, using Dejours'(1993) work psychodynamics theory. To complete the analysis of effective solutions against suffering at work as well as the role of gender, Antonovsky's (1979) theory of salutogenesis and Butler's (199) theory of performativity have been added to the theoretical framework. The results of the analysis show that the notion of care is central to the sources of pleasure for the respondents, precisely the ability to help and make a difference in the lives of patients. On the contrary, the economic and political situation of the management of the health network appears as one of the most stressful elements for the respondents, the latter having far-reaching impacts on daily work. Also, teamwork has a shared role, being both a source of pleasure and a source of potential suffering. Then, the most common solutions used by nurses to cope with suffering at work are sport, recreation, social support and reorganization of work tasks. Finally, regarding the role of the male gender in the dynamics of work-related suffering, the answers of the respondents indicated that the concept of being a man is very diversified. Some similar elements in the answers relate to the practice of nursing, which would be more pragmatic and solution-oriented when practiced by a man. The respondents, by their answers, show that, on the one hand, the clientele sees the entry of men as a good thing for the nursing profession, and on the other hand, that the expectations of the female colleagues and employer on the role that must occupy a male nurse remains strongly anchored in the traditional image of a man for these two actors. According to these findings, an urgent need remains in the employer's openness to collaborate with their employees in the search and the practical application of solutions to cope with the suffering at work.

Full textBased on numerous surveys in psychodynamics of work conducted in public and private companies, in the sectors of industry and services as well as agriculture, this thesis proposes to analyse the individual and collective psychological springs of resistance actions against the constraints of work imposed by the neoliberal work organization. The clinical material of the research deals specifically with the relationships between the different forms of work organization on the one hand, and psychological suffering and mental pathologies on the other. In most cases, this material was collected through specialized interventions in "work clinics" at the request of occupational physicians or occupational health services. Through these interventions (which have resulted in changes in the work organization), attention has been paid to the concrete forms of resistance behaviours invented by workers when confronted with some methods introduced in companies since the managerial revolution. In this perspective, the analysis of the resistance behaviours made it possible to identify them as a turning point in the orientation of strategies of defense against suffering at work. The clinical facts constructed in these surveys suggest that this turning point affects electively the strategies of defense constructed to combat the ethical suffering, that is to say the suffering experienced by subjects when they are brought, by the instructions of the work organization, to contribute to practices which their moral sense condemns. Ultimately, the reference to living labor gives rise to a conception of the praxis of resistance aimed specifically at combating three of the consequences produced by the neo-liberal organization of work: contempt for living labor, loneliness and the banalization of social injustice. For this, the role of recomposing cooperation in labor appears to be the central element structuring the praxis of resistance. The thesis mobilizes knowledge in the field of clinical and psychodynamics of work first, in the field of psychology and psychoanalysis, "moral psychology" and finally political philosophy

Full textAs for any living being, people develop their personalities and evolve by interacting with their environment. Gainful employment constitutes a determining factor of this interaction since, being a source of fulfilment but also of stress, it can have an enduring effect on the physical and mental health of an individual. The pathogenic nature of work is legally acknowledged through concepts of professional hazards and, more recently, of difficult working conditions. Closely linked to changes in working practices, it is amongst the current issues arising from the dialectics concerning retirement and the improvement of working conditions. While the difficulty of working conditions is legally linked to the ending of working life and life expectancy, we should now move on from this approach. Blending the notions of health, wellbeing and hardship at work, this notion displays above all an evolution in the way of conceiving the protection of the working individual. Further deliberation needs to be given to definition, prevention and penalties in the light of accompanying financial and human considerations. A protean notion, both subjective and multidisciplinary, the difficulty of working conditions should be approached independently and requires the coordinated intervention of a number of actors, with the employer and employee at the centre

Full textThe evolution of the work environment, work organization, and practices of human ressource management, introduces new pathologies work alongside the traditional pathologies so-called physical pathologies : there are mental pathologies. These are related to organizational or market constraints compared to traditional pathologies related to physical and material task's conditions. In this context of new forms of ill-being at work, the concept of suffering at work, "ghost" concept in management science, appears relevant because it queries the organizational functioning and the role of human resource management. This research has two objectives: contribute to a better understanding of suffering at work in producing a clear definition of this concept, and theorize the link between suffering at work and work commitment in defining how these constructs influence each other. Our research is motivated by the question : what relationship is there between suffering at work and work commitment ? To answer, we rely on conservation of resources theory. The results of this research show that suffering at work arises from a loss of organizational ressources causing an erosion of subjective resources that allow the individual to define himself, and creates a specific form of work commitment : the over-involvement. It is rooted in the suffering at work itself and it is guided by negative experiences of work forcing of negative feelings toward the organization

Full textFifty years after it has been institutionalized within the professional system in Quebec province and after it has been given a key function within the provincial education system, the profession of vocational guidance counselor (v.g.c.) is still struggling for the recognition of its social relevance. It is as if the professionalization, which is understood as a process that allows a trade to be recognized with its own identity linked to the exercise of responsibilities requiring high qualifications, was still being questioned. As the education system is frequently being reformed, the constant reconfiguration of practices makes the claim of a clear occupational identity difficult. The v.g.c have been affected deep into their professional core by the institutional transformations of the recent years. At least that is what this thesis wants to explore by apprehending a dynamic of occupational identity suffering. Based on the theoretical and methodological framework of the clinic of the activity (Clot, 1999; Oddone, Re & Briante, 1981) and of the psychodynamics of work (Dejours, 2008), this dissertation aims to analyze the tensions between the practices prescribed by the education system and the profession, those desired by the v.g.c. and the actual practices which are embodied in the daily work. It is to enlighten the dynamics between pleasure, suffering at work and defensive strategies, in the light of the professional rules derived from the occupational “genre” and the work collective. Conducted with two groups of v.g.c. (n=10 and 11) encountered each on four occasions, the research reveals these main lines of occupational identity suffering: a disembodiment of the professional core; a deprofessionalization of work; a professional disrepute; and a deficit of collegiality. To protect from this suffering, the v.g.c. use strategies derived from their “trade desire” that participate in its redefinition. It appears that this way to understand the occupational identity suffering and its discussion within collective of v.g.c. can lead to a reappropriation and a development of the profession in the society.

Full textStress, burn-out, depression or even "psychosocial risks" are all categories which today serve to designate the multiple forms of psychological suffering linked to professional activity. The ills of the mind, however, are not a recent phenomenon. On the contrary, they have taken on forms and meanings that vary throughout history. So what about work? From when, under what circumstances and for what reasons could he be apprehended as a source of psychological suffering? How were these sufferings denounced? On the contrary, how can we explain the social invisibility of the effects of work on workers' mental health? What role did the trade unions, responsible for representing and defending employees and their health, play in this story? Today, we have few answers to these questions. It is this history that this thesis wishes to trace from a particular attention to trade union organizations. Trade unionists, as workers' representatives, are called upon to play a leading role in safeguarding their health and improving their working conditions. Our research focuses on the activity of two trade union confederations, the CGT and the CFDT, with different origins, history and political positioning and in the trade union field. We pay particular attention to the role played by the confederal counselors, the actors in charge of implementing confederal policies. Both the CFDT and the CGT have never abandoned the field of working conditions, on which permanent staff have always been in charge. However, this subject, often carried by militants with atypical trajectories and profiles in the trade union space, has only rarely been a political priority. In addition, the theme of mental health was taken up by the CGT in 1954 and by the CFDT ten years later. Nevertheless, it was the subject of intermittent management until the turn of the 2000s. This thesis thus sheds light on the dynamics and dynamics of taking charge of and concealing the stakes of psychological health, which are linked both to the methods of organisation and division of labour within the trade union confederations, to the careers and socialisation of activists in responsibility and to their inclusion in militant and scientific networks. It situates the practices of confederal officials in the evolution of knowledge and the legal framework of health by analysing their role in the social visibility of psychological suffering and in their trade union care

Full textIn view of the intensification of the work load in Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly, it is necessary to create measures to deal with the suffering of care professionals. An analysis of published literature brings to light the scarcity of studies devoted to the prevention and remediation of stress and burnout in care work with the elderly. Unidimensional approaches such as care worker training, group therapy and stress management techniques have been proved to be efficient but with limitations. Would multidimensional holistic support be more efficient than unidimensional support such as training or group therapy? This paper presents research carried out on 38 care workers in Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly, comparing the efficiency of a multidimensional support programme based on humanistic psychology to unidimensional test programmes, in dealing with perceived stress, well-being at work and burnout. The experimental programme focuses on the struggle against work place suffering which is a multi-factorial and complex phenomenon. It includes learning relaxation techniques and learning how to deal with emotions, an assessment of the situation using the Three Trees Test, and creative group support in the development of work practices. The statistical analysis of the results shows that the workplace well-being score of the care workers in the experimental group progressed further than that of the care workers in the test groups. The qualitative analysis and discussion show that multidimensional support enables individuals to become aware of their personal resources and to develop them in order to bring about deep seated changes

Full textThis study aims at contributing to the scientific controversy about the variability of social support effects, based upon studies which highlight deleterious effects of social support. How can we explain that a same social support can generate positive effects for some of its recipients while generating negative effects for others? According to the plural and active socialization theoretical model, we assume that social support appropriation behaviors play a role in explaining this variability. In order to examine the appropriation behaviors in their individual and collective components, a research action program has been drawn within the Suffering at Work Counseling of the occupational and environmental pathologies service of Purpan’s University Hospital, in Toulouse. The longitudinal approach and the comparison of two ‘workplace situations analysis’ groups have enabled us to analyze and model the collective and individual social support appropriation behaviors processed by the members of both groups who volunteered to participate in the study. These individuals have been experiencing work-related suffering and were thus referred to the counseling service. The observed relationships between individual appropriation, collective appropriation and social support effects support theoretical and practical proposals about the prevention of work-related suffering

Full textAgonshû is a Japanese 'New New Religion' founded in 1978 by Kiriyama Seiyû. The teachings point out that all of life’s problems and misfortunes are the result of spiritual and karmic hindrances and the goma (fire rite) is the religious response from Agonshû to cure social suffering. Since the end of the 20th century, Agonshû has extended its activities abroad to pray for World Peace, and performed numerous goma ceremonies outside Japan. The choice of the place of the ceremony is mostly lead by its importance during World War 2, like the Goma held at Guadalcanal in 2009 or in the Pacifics Ocean in 2012 where many Japanese soldiers had lost their lives. Beyond completing a Memory Work, this strategy is also a way to gain authority and prestige outside, but also inside Japan. Nationalism is on the core of these rituals. As followers told me during interviews about World Peace : "only Japan can accomplish this, only Agonshû". These kinds of affirmations stress the edge where Agonshû sits. On the one hand there is the promotion of universalism among human being and on the other hand the absolute superiority of the Japanese religions. In Agonshû’s discourse, pacifism forges nationalism

Full textThis research proposes to look at the psychodynamic interactions at play in the transference movements that emerge when a teacher encounters the reality of a pupil with behavioural disorders. From the incomprehensible to the unbearable, from the difficulty to the suffering –the troubled pupil intrudes into the teacher's subjective experience and generates « identity breakdowns », hinting at a certain psychic rigidity in one's professional position. The « extrapolation » of the concepts of transference and counter-transference from the field of psychoanalysis outlines the contours of a counter-transference specific to the teacher in a troubled teaching relationship. As a desired subject, he mobilises counter-transferential attitudes, observable in their effects, falling under either an already-existing responsiveness or one of varying intensity in terms of disharmony in the articulation of his desires, and constructed and prescribed representations characterising his interpretative filters. Understanding the economics of the psychodynamics of the teacher with regard to professional distress, in a clinical approach with a psychoanalytical orientation, constitutes a foundation to consider rethinking the interpretation of his subjective experience in favour of a Psychic Postural Plasticity of the Teacher

Full textOver the past 20 years the Brazilian Postoffice and Telegrapg- ECT, has undergone a constant process of modernization and technological restructuring and management. Based on this fact it was decided that the general aim of this thesis was to analyze the current state of mental health of commercial attendants and postmen of ECT in the state of Paraíba. Regarding the methodological aspect this is an epidemiological cross-sectional analytical study with a qualitative and quantitative approach in a sample of 150 commercialattendants and 150 postmen. In qualitative terms, semi-structured interviews were conducted, and in the quantitative level the GHQ-12 Goldenberg, the inventory of motivations Blais and other developed and tested questionnaire was used. With regard to theoretical aspects, this study was based on consolidated literature in the field of motivation and mental health at work. As for the results, commercial attendants showed a higher level of motivation than postmen, especially regarding intrinsic motivation.Regarding the GHQ-12 analysis, it was found that 4.4% of commercial attendants showed some symptoms of depression and 33.1% had anxiety symptoms. Among postmen, 20.7% showed a worrying situation of depression and emotional stress and 24.4% showed no sense of self-efficacy.Furthermore, psychodynamic analyzes demonstrated that the acts of creative intelligence of commercial attendants are generally not validated by chief’s recognition, which in some cases has led to psychological distress. Rather, when they feel recognized a feeling of pleasure arises. As for the postmen, the feeling of pleasure is mainly the consequence of autonomy in the mail delivery, which leads to a feeling of self achievement through the success at the task, which is reinforced by the recognition of clients and colleagues. On the other hand, work overload, the pressures and the lack of recognition by the hierarchy cause psychological distress. This study demonstrates that there are no significant differences between business servers and mail carriers regarding their mental health

Full textProfessional counselors are struggling to establish a collective identity ever since the origins of the profession. More specifically, their occupational identity is impeded by the heterogeneity of common practices, the rapid and multidirectional evolution of societal needs and due to the difficulty of being prescribed specific roles in the work organization. Furthermore, school counselors are particularly vulnerable to identity difficulties as these struggles can be nurtured by their work environment and the latter may even contribute to occupational identity suffering (OIS). OIS can arise when school counselors’ work experience would prevent them to perform desired practices and to acquire a sense of professional accomplishment (Viviers, 2016). In addition to these problems, several studies indicated that school counselors are also inclined to experience burnout (e.g., Butler & Constantine, 2005; Wilkerson & Bellini, 2006). This propensity is associated to the execution of administrative tasks (e.g., Bardhoshi, Schweinle, & Duncan, 2014), usually prescribed by school principals. The purpose of the current study was to elaborate and validate a predictive model of school counselors’ burnout in Quebec. Our model posits that the perception of daily performed tasks at work –guidance and counseling activities and administrative tasks – as well as years of experience would influence the experience of OIS which would in turn predict counselor’s burnout. Results from structural equation modeling revealed that burnout and the emotional exhaustion dimension are positively predicted by OIS and the latter is negatively predicted by guidance and counselling activities, and positively predicted by administrative tasks. In addition, guidance and counseling activities indirectly and negatively predicts burnout and emotional exhaustion. Burnout is also indirectly and positively predicted by administrative work. Hence, it seems crucial to investigate counselors’ identity and burnout struggles in order to promote a more favorable work environment that can foster a good mental health. Keywords: school counselors, burnout, occupational identity suffering, administrative work, guidance and counseling activities

Full textThe concept of "psychosocial risks at work" gathers several work-related suffering risks. These risks are, at the same time, related to the generating acts of pain and to the expressions of suchpain on employees’ health. Despite its formulation, this concept refers to events affecting both mental and physical health of workers. Such affecting events share the same social ground. Indeed, psychosocial risks are mainly caused by the companies’ organization themselves, management methods or harmful relationships. Even though the expression of psychosocial risks was formerly developed out of the legal environment, it is now generally used in law to deal with issues of health and safety at work. However, the comprehensive understanding of such risks is not yet obvious from a legal perspective. These are complicated to define and delimit, tinged with subjectivity and unlikely to be understood in light of the employment law history. However, law is increasingly taking into account the different dimensions of the workers’ individuality. Also, if the psychosocial risks fail to be recognized, so far, as an independent and entire legal concept, both laws (domestic and international) and case law are more and more referring to it. Therefore, measures and legal solutions applicable to the working relationships in private companies enable to prevent such risks, punish or compensate them. As such, a wide range of people, whether related or not to the company, are able to duly face these factors

We had made the hypothesis which the teachers produce, reproduce even reactivate their perceptions of the school learnings, whatever are components, every time in the exercise of their job, it is about these learnings, even that they associate them with a well-being, an ill-being in their work. To seize what could be the link between these learnings and their activity, we left several theories which could fit, or add up between what contributes to the training of the perceptions of the school learnings of the teacher and to their expression in its professional environment. There is production or reproduction of school learnings when the teacher mobilizes the habit (domestic legacy), when he puts in abyss (effect of mirror) his school training in the situations of transmission, when he stages the influences of his environment (family, school, social) acting during his school training. Finally when the more or less noxious working conditions catalyse recollections of school learnings. The results of our study showed that according to the context, the professional situations met, the teacher makes up, either negotiates or confronts his perceptions of the school learnings. However every teacher remains singular in his perceptions of the school learnings and in the forms of links which can take place ( social, logical conducts) with his activity

Full textHow do strategic and management consultants think and live their careers? This very dynamic sector of strategy and management consulting is both criticized and little known by society. It attracts many young graduates, mostly for a few years. Perceived by candidates as a career accelerator, it seemed interesting to study the reality at work valued by young degreed people and companies. My questions regarding this activity concern the methods used, the added value of consulting companies and the recommendations they make which are accused of generating complexities within their clients. Using approaches related to organizational sociology and ethnography, I tried to shed new light on this practice, starting from a total immersion of one year in a strategy and organization consulting company. From a methodological point of view, I suggest a system of interviews I called "continuous interviews". This method makes it possible to benefit from the advantages of the classical life stories and the continuation of the interview by various forms (mails, sms, voice messages) offers us the possibility of a reflexive look of the person interviewed on his speech. The results of this thesis allow me to focus on different themes. It is found that the initial illusion, hidden by the fact that consulting is an activity that attracts and which is close to decision places quickly leaves place to a professional disillusionment for young recruited people. My research clarified the ambiguous relationship in terms of management that can exist in a "mentoring" relationship between juniors and senior managers, especially when this is done in a setting where the ‘godson’ and the ‘godfather’ are in relationships that can be both hierarchical and non-hierarchical. This thesis allows us to explore the modalities of paradoxical suffering at work for young motivated managers

Full textThe general practitioner (GP) is often confronted with patients with mental health problems related to work. The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of work related mental distress in patients consulting their GP and to study the association between mental distress and psychosocial factors at work. This work is based on the Héraclès study conducted among 2,027 patients in professional activity consulting their GP in the Nord - Pas-de-Calais. Mental distress was evaluated with the MINI International Neuropsychiatric Interview, by the patient's statement and the GP’s diagnosis. The association between mental distress objectified by the MINI and psychosocial factors at work was studied using a Poisson regression or a logistic regression model. The prevalence of work related mental distress objectified by the MINI was 25.6%, 24.5% for mental distress reported by the patient and 25.8% for mental distress diagnosed by the GP. In the multivariable analyses significant association was found for depression/anxiety and work intensity, emotional demands and social relations at work. Excessive alcohol consumption was associated with social relations at work and autonomy. For suicidality, there was an association with work intensity in men and emotional demands in women. The prevalence of work related mental distress found in our study was high and emphasize the major role of GPs in the management of these patients. Several psychosocial factors at work were associated with mental distress which shows the impact of those work characteristics on the presence of mental distress

Full textA significant reduction in treatment compliance is found among nearly ail diabetic children when they reach puberty. The purpose of this study is to analyse the reasons for this systematic onset of non-compliance. The ' psychopathology of non-compliance in diabetic adolescents" has been extensively studied. Researchers typically view this behaviour as part of the "illness process", as a result of the "work of adolescence"', or as a combination of the two. Drawn from semi-directive interviews with diabetic teenagers and their parents, we suggest that a different type of psychological process can be expressed through non-compliance. We theorize that the trauma associated with the onset of puberty leads diabetic adolescents to recall a previous trauma that was never fully resolved. Through "harmful treatment", the diabetic adolescent retraces his suffering relationship to his parental imagos and to the presumed psychological pain that he caused his parents by being sick. This fantasmatic relationship, disowned by the parents who run away from the situation by using medical care, represents an experience as traumatic as the diagnosis of the disease. The adolescent tries to "re-present" this trauma in order to symbolise it and elaborate upon it with "harmful treatment" appearing as the clinical expression of a "harm process" that is reaching its final stages. This behaviour symbolises the attempt to cut off the fantasmatic therapeutic relationship that binds the adolescent to his parental imagos by shifting the internal conflict to the treatment. By attracting the attention of doctors, nurses and psychologists to the psychological wounds that have remained "harmfully treated" or "un-treated", the teenager introduces a third "terni" (tiercénë). Thus, "harmful treatment" serves as a means for psychic repair in the self as w-ell as for those around the adolescent, specifïcally his parents. This new psychopathology approach to problems with treatment compliance leads to several therapeutic stratégies that go beyond uniquely medical objectives and tasks

Full textThis research focuses on the determinants and effects of psychosocial factors on the health of secondary school teachers in the Tunis region. It involves identifying environmental, organizational and relational factors in working life which contribute to stress among teachers. Our research focuses on aspects related to the organizational climate, perceived quality of work situations, professional values and on how they contribute to work-related stress and affect the quality of life in the workplace. The results point to a predominantly rules-based organizational climate in secondary schools, reflecting a method of operation based on compliance with clear rules and standards. In addition to these results, we have analyzed sources of work-related stress among teachers and identified work situations that are likely to generate stress. The analyses indicate that high workloads associated with a low sense of control are sources of tension. The lack of social support increases work-related tension and causes burn-out.Multiple correspondence and ascending hierarchical analysis have helped to establish various teacher profiles. Similarly, a qualitative survey of 34 teachers resulted in a better understanding of the quantitative data that were corroborated

Full textCreativity as prevention of stress and suffering at work Analysis of "pathologies of communication": the case of care assistants among employees of Dassault into the experience of collective creativityHow to understand and act against discomfort – from stress to suffering - and the internal problems of modern business? We show how creativity can be a preventive and omnipotent communication approach, an alternative that can reduce a communication pathogen caused by management, in favor of a less instrumental than institutional and formal communication social. Our proof is structured in three parts, each bringing forth a paradox. The first is identified from a socio-historical examination of traditional work. Indeed, it enrolled as a place of suffering, but also of joy, present in the key concept of otium. The second comes from the pathogen world of business and appears from the examination of this space from the Habermassian paradigm of "pathologies of communication." The case of care assistants under stress but also suffering has been subjected to this new reading report. The analysis is complemented by a Winnicotian approach, allowing perceiving the unconscious mechanisms generated by the failed neomanagement. In the third part, in the middle of the movement about creative process, through a socio-psychoanalytic approach, we start with Winnicot theories about creativity, to transpose and beyond, in the internal life of the company. This theory is articulated and supplemented by an empirical study with Dassault employees who made the unusual experience of creating a 'transitional space heterotopic "paradoxically allowing to get rid of the work area and in the the same tine to be connected to it
