Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of the “Narrative About a Young Man and the Magician” (also known as a “Homily About Mesites the Magician”), which was part of several Old Russian miscellanea and originated from Greek. The narrative is examined from the standpoint of plot-building issues, with regard to both the original text and the changes that were introduced by the Slavonic translators and editors. The authors reveal a specific narrative structure in which the elements of one set of plot features are mirrored or duplicated in another narrative. They also trace the distinctive feature

We measured PM2.5 in 41 underground shopping districts (USDs) in the Seoul metropolitan area from June to November 2017, and associated 18 trace elements to determine the sources and assess the respiratory risks. The PM2.5 concentrations were 18.0 ± 8.0 μg/m3 inside USDs, which were lower than 25.2 ± 10.6 μg/m3 outside. We identified five sources such as indoor miscellanea, soil dust, vehicle exhaust/cooking, coal combustion, and road/subway dust, using factor analysis. Almost 67% of the total trace element concentration resulted from soil dust. Soil dust contribution increased with the number

The paper considers some contemplative aspects of the Croatian Glagolitic prose text The Vision of St. Bernard. It originates from one of the potentially most popular Latin contrasts, and is preserved in two Croatian Glagolitic miscellanies from the 15th century. It mirrors general aspects of the medieval Christian spirituality and is draped in a vibrant, dramatic dialogue. Although the fate of the protagonists (agonists, in fact) is known in advance, their argument is marked by stylistically successful variations of the teaching essentially addressing the receivers. ABSTRACT In a forest stand, litterfall is primarily responsible for the retention and return of nutrients to the soil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the return of nutrients through litterfall in a stand of Eucalyptus dunnii in a Pampa biome. For quantification of litterfall, four 420-m2 installments were marked; within each one, four 0.50-m2 collection plots were distributed. For the collection of thick branches, four 7.00-m2 sub-plots were staked out. The collected litterfall was separated into leaf, twig, thick branch, and miscellany fractions for subsequent chemical analysis.

We investigated annual litterfall and leaf decomposition rate in a cerrado site. We collected woody plant litter monthly from April 2001 to March 2002 and from July 2003 to June 2004. We placed systematically 13 litter traps (0.5 x 0.5 m) in a line, 10 m one from the other. We sorted litter into 'leaves', 'stems', 'reproductive structures', and 'miscellanea' fractions, oven-dried them at 80 °C until constant mass and weighed the dry material. To assess leaf decomposition rate, we packed leaves recently shed by plants in litter bags. We placed seven sets of nine litter bags in a line, 10 m one

In contrast to the frequently studied fragment called “philosophical treatise” (B. Peichev) as part of “Miscellany”, the author draws attention to another fragment, namely to the chapter called “Joseph of the Maccabees”, which is a translation from Greek of certain fragments of the 4 Maccabees. Since the fragment is devoted to the issue – how passions can be guided by reflection, in addition to epistemological terms, it contains a large number of

The scholar Stefanos Koumanoudis (1818‑1899), throughout his long academic career primarily devoted to lexicography, epigraphy and archaeology, did not fail to experiment with poetic activity as well, in which he gave voice to his political vision and Enlightenment ideals. In 1851 he published the poem Stratis Kalopìchiros and, between 1845 and 1848, he composed a series of seven sonnets dedicated to the city of Venice. In these compositions with their passionate tone, he explored the Greek visitor’s feelings of admiration for the former ruler of his people, now fallen into foreign hands. The

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the relations of Italian opera with some products of nineteenth-century Greek literature that, namely, belong to two different genres: comic theatre and popular fiction. In the first case, it is the 1859 comedy entitled Ψευτοξενοδόχος (The Fake Landlord) by a certain K.P., and of the short story entitled Πατροκατάρατος by Marinos Papadòpulos Vretòs from 1845. Both texts contain pronounced hints of Italian lyric texts, testifying to an early diffusion of lyrical opera on Greek soil and to a general appreciation on the part of the learned public that, in
