SUMMARY Estimation of ambient seismic source distributions (e.g. location and strength) can aid studies of seismic source mechanisms and subsurface structure investigations. One can invert for the ambient seismic (noise) source distribution by applying full-waveform inversion (FWI) theory to seismic (noise) crosscorrelations. This estimation method is especially applicable for seismic recordings without obvious body-wave arrivals. Data pre-processing procedures are needed before the inversion, but some pre-processing procedures commonly used in ambient noise tomography can bias the ambient (no

Source inversion optimization using sensor observations is a key method for rapidly and accurately identifying unknown source parameters (source strength and location) in abrupt hazardous gas leaks. Sensor number and location distribution both play important roles in source inversion; however, their combined impacts on source inversion optimization remain poorly understood. In our study, the optimization inversion method is established based on the Gaussian plume model and the generation algorithm. This thesis considers statistical issues in source localization from the received signal strength (RSS) measurements at sensor locations, under the practical assumption of log-normal shadowing. Distance information of source from sensor locations can be estimated from RSS measurements and many algorithms directly use powers of distances to localize the source, even though distance measurements are not directly available. The first part of the thesis considers the statistical analysis of distance estimation from RSS measurments. We show that the underlying problem is inefficient and there is on
