Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Oral productions from french and english profoundly deaf oral youths are studied. The following hypothesis is proposed : profound deafness, which implies specific conditions for language acquisition and for the development of cognition, is likely to have linguistic consequences, whatever the language spoken. The data are analysed from morphological, syntactic, and semantic points of view. Quantitative homogeneity is checked, before studying the functioning of corrections and repetitions, the setting of discourse themes, determiners, and temporal references. The data analysis shows the existence of regularities, with identical phenomena in french and in english. The correlations that appear throughout with the grammars of sign languages (which were created by deaf people), tend to support our hypothesis

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the problems of deafness in Algeria, more particularly in schools where an attempt is made to pin down the causes of failure in the learning of language by deaf children. In order to understand the difficulties, it had seemed appropriate to examine the problem of deafness itself and its consequences on schooling and social life. This will be the subject of the first part. The emphasis will be on this "difference" which affects primarily the development of language and which may cause schooling delays and create psychoaffective problems and social problems. The current conflict of methods, oralism sign language, makes it possible to reconsider the status of deaf children thanks to the findings of linguistics and the works of psycholinguists and sociolinguists, of whom some current ideas will be presented in this work. In the second part, the deaf community in Algeria will be illustrated with some historical and socio-educational characteristics, for, to know the past and present living conditions of the deaf gives us the means to understand their actual level in the practice of the written language, which will be examined in the third part. The observed difficulties lie at the syntactic level, as well as the lexical, grammatical, and orthographic levels. The choice of deaf francophones, deaf arabophones, and hearing pupils benefits our analysis. This study is made in a pedagogical prospect but is integrated in a set of psycho-sociolinguistic views

Abstract:

Abstract:
The present study brings to discussion the influence of vision on speech perception. The information supplien by "audible" and "visible" spoken word represents different information sources, that make speech recognition and interpretation possible. We have tried to put in evidence the results of different informations (audible and visible) on word perception based on an experimental procedure with a sample of hearing impaired adults that became profoundly deaf for different reasons. All users of cochlear implants. Two conditions were teste: visuam and audio-visual. Three hypothesis tested were confirmed: - threre is a difference on perception under the two conditions: - some vowels may facilitate the visualization of certain consonants: - a new classification of consonants by homophonous groups was verified. Our study was then distributed through seven chapters

Abstract:
This study includes three experiments which have in common to study the role of acoustic experiences and social experiences in the acquisition of language in the deaf child. We analyzed the vocal productions of the profoundly deaf child aged between 4 and 7 months, the emergence of baddling and its temporal structuration. The melodic structuration was studied in the framework of the mother-child interactions. The following results have been obtained : 1) an early interaction between auditory perception mechanisms and vocal productions. 2) an interaction between acoustic experiences and baddling ; the relationship between baddling and audition and baddling and language were described and discussed. 3) an interaction between mother-deaf child turn taking and the onset of prosodic elements, rythm and melody, which can be seen as the bases for later language. These interactions mean that the analyse of the conversational sequential exchanges is strongly necessary for a pertinent study of child language. The original concept of "interactional developmental intonology" defines both the theorical framework of our study and the linguistic aspects which were explored

Abstract:

Abstract:
Can the deaf learn to read without the help of phonological mediation? or is phonology an obligatory step to acquiring written language? this thesis on the didactics of acquiring written language in deaf subjects attempts to answer these questions. Basing our work, on the one hand, on the tests of conrad in the united kingdom (1964) and of klima and bellugi in the usa (1975), and on the other hand, on theoretical references concerning the cognitive approach to reading (identification processes of words, main models, etc. ), along with concepts such as bilingualism, identity, representation and past and present deaf culture, we tested several variables likely to influence the processes involved in the deaf acquiring written language. The fundamental idea is that the deaf, if totally deprived of the acoustic channel, cannot attain phonological consciousness, in such case, the visual-occular-motor channel resulting from sign language should generate a specifically gestural inner speech which may be assumed to partly compensate for the absence of phonic inner speech. Analysis of data enabled us to point out the importance of phonic inner speech and its role in the reading process, including for the totally deaf. Examination of results also enabled us to understand that lip reading, cued speech and other therapeutic aids constitute a source of phonological information used in the processes of identifying text. Furthermore, analysis of errors related to components of gestural signs (cheremes), along with observations made during writing task situations (didactic computer program),, confirm the existence of gestural inner speech in the deaf. The idea of a compensatory strategy based on gestural inner speech by deaf subjects making little use of phonic inner speech, however, could not be shown

Abstract:
AbstractBioacoustics combines the fields of biology and acoustics to answer questions about hearing, sound production and sound communication in animals. Marine mammals have specialised hearing abilities and use sounds in different ways underwater. How do whales and seals use sound for communication and to find prey? How are they affected by human-made sounds from ships, oil exploration and windfarms? To answer such questions, you need to study marine mammals, be well-trained in natural sciences and know about animal anatomy, physiology and behaviour. You also need a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of acoustics, maths and physics. Bioacoustics is a truly interdisciplinary research field involving biologists, physicists and engineers trying to understand the world of biological sound, how sounds are produced and used by animals. Additionally, underwater acoustic recordings can reveal which areas animals use during different seasons. Bioacoustics can also be used to improve wildlife protection by regulating damaging sound sources in marine mammal habitats. Using the exercises at the end of this chapter, students learn about frequencies, decibels and their own hearing abilities, as well as how to build their own underwater microphone.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Source-Path-Receiver Model (SPRM) is a fundamental concept derived from hazard (including noise) control. It is useful in studies of animal bioacoustics where the sound sources may be animals, humans, or natural events within the habitat and the receivers are animals. It provides a framework for the researcher to ensure all aspects of the scenario being observed or recorded are considered, which could affect the observations. This chapter develops the SPRM for the example of animal acoustic communication, where the source and receiver are animals of the same species. Factors that affect the source and receiver are explained (e.g., age, sex, individual identity, and context). Much emphasis is given to “the path.” The environment through which the sound travels affects the received signal (in terms of its amplitude, frequency, and duration) and exhibits ambient noise, which might affect both sender and receiver. The basic concepts of sound propagation are explained (including Huygens’ principle, ray tracing, Snell’s law, reflection, scattering, reverberation, diffraction, refraction, transmission, absorption, ground effect, atmosphere effects, acoustic mirages, and shadow zones). The SPRM illustrates the importance of exploring the acoustic features of a sound signal at all points between the sender and receiver to understand factors that could promote or inhibit effective communication among animals.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews sources of information about gestures in antiquity. One source comprises circumstantial references to gesture and posture in literature, that is to say, descriptions of what a character is doing with his or her body while speaking. A second important source is sculpture and painting, especially when—as all too rarely happens—a label or a bit of dialogue is included in the painting. A third source comprises certain gestures used by people in Greece and around the Mediterranean today. This last source may at first glance seem to lack authority, but as the chapter shows, some such gestures resemble those noted in ancient literature and art closely enough to serve as heuristic devices, i.e., templates by whose application missing elements of antiquity's body language can be inferred.

Abstract:
The Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is one of the popular communication technologies employed in the Internet of Things (IoT) context. IoT devices need random numbers to feed their security mechanisms, where the generation of random numbers presupposes the existence of entropy sources. However, there are few entropy sources available, due to the limited hardware resources of those devices. Given this scenario, this paper presents a scalable approach for gathering entropy, called Bluerandom. The approach is based on the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) within Bluetooth communications. The results show that Bluerandom can be used as an alternative source of entropy, improving the robustness of the cryptographic mechanisms for the IoT context.

How to coordinate the communication among intersections effectively in real complex traffic scenarios with multi-intersection is challenging. Existing approaches only enable the communication in a heuristic manner without considering the content/importance of information to be shared. In this paper, we propose a universal communication form UniComm between intersections. UniComm embeds massive observations collected at one agent into crucial predictions of their impact on its neighbors, which improves the communication efficiency and is universal across existing methods. We also propose a concise network UniLight to make full use of communications enabled by UniComm. Experimental results on real datasets demonstrate that UniComm universally improves the performance of existing state-of-the-art methods, and UniLight significantly outperforms existing methods on a wide range of traffic situations. Abstract:
Abstract Online communication and collaboration tools are changing the way teams design products. The tools also generate a rich data source from which to study trends in communication. This paper focuses on how engineering teams utilize Slack, a popular team messaging software platform. We aim to better understand communication and coordination in product design teams via analysis of team social network dynamics, unique patterns of chat-like messaging (emoji usage), and the evolution of communication topics over time. Our study analyzes the online interactions of 32 teams, sent during a 3-month senior undergraduate product design course. These 400,000+ messages represent the team communications from 4 years of teams, with 17–20 students per team. We find that 1) Slack communications resulted in high density network maps, 2) network analysis of teams reveals that leaders have more central positions in the network, 3) strong teams have lower average centrality among members, equivalent to less public channel membership per person, 4) stronger teams use emojis at a higher rate, and 5) emojis are used most by leaders and highly connected members. These findings represent preliminary foundations for best practices in online messaging, which may lead to more effective collaboration in product design.

Abstract:
Purpose – Hotel managers meet daily challenges when communicating and conducting hotel business operations. Some challenges can be predicted and prevented, while some are ad hoc and cannot be influenced in advance. To address these challenges and convey messages they use communication. Communication is at the heart of every business and a key success factor. The purpose of this paper is to investigate, analyze, present and map the internal and external challenges that hotel managers face when communicating and managing hotel business, based on a theoretical review of previous research. It aims to identify the importance of the role communication plays in hotel operations and how it contributes to them, and to identify future communication challenges that hotel managers will face in hotel business operations. Methodology – This paper uses the literature review as a research method and focuses on reviewed open sources only and published relevant studies in publications about communication, management and tourism and hospitality industry. Desk research was used to search for and analyse papers. The literature review provides an analytical overview of the latest publications and research on the role of managerial communication and hotel business operations. The search for relevant papers was based on the keywords challenges, communication, management, and hotel business operations, using the citation and bibliographic databases of DOAB, EconLit, Emerald, Google Scholar, SAGE journals, Science Direct, Scopus, Springer, Taylor & Francis, and Web of Science. Findings – Results indicate that maintaining continuous and targeted communication is of crucial importance in ensuring timely and appropriate responses to emerging challenges. At the core of any business, communication is an element that warrants great attention. Poor communication can be counter-productive and adversely affect overall business performance. The paper highlights the primary challenges in communication facing hotel managers. These are: sending the right message to the right audience at the right time; communicating about sustainability; addressing the environmental and social awareness of consumers, financial, political and health crises, information and communication technology development, social networks, climate-related disasters, armed conflicts, and other challenges. Contribution – The contribution of this paper is that it presents an overview of the challenges that hotel managers meet in communicating in hotel business operations and can serve as a basis for further research in this field and improvement of hotel business operations. Challenges that have appeared over the past twenty years have been analyzed and grouped so that hotel managers can learn which challenges often arise in running a hotel business and prepare strategies to overcome the same or similar challenges in their business. By reviewing the literature, the paper determines what is known about this topic and what needs to be further researched. It is recommended that further studies investigate the current challenges facing hotel managers, given the increasingly rapid changes, globalization, computerization and new world crises occurring today.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract A new analytical workflow that uses pressure-transient data to characterize connectivity between two originally non-communicating reservoir zones is presented. With this technique, hydraulic communication is clearly identified and corresponding fluid crossflow rates accurately quantified. It is applicable to a wide range of communication mechanisms, including inactive commingled-completion wells, conductive fractures and faults, in addition to behind-casing completion problems. The impact of interference is also captured by handling an unlimited number of wells and communicating media. The solution uses pressure-transient data effectively to diagnose communication and estimate the amount of transported fluids. The new formulation is a general formulation for handling an unlimited number of producing wells and communicating media, which helps analyze pressure responses under the influence of interference. The reservoir system under consideration is assumed to be two-dimensional with two initially-isolated reservoir zones, intersected by an arbitrary number of wells, part of which are active producers while others can be penetrating wells with commingled completion, in addition to other communicating media. The well test duration is assumed long enough for the pressure-transient data to be affected by fluid communication. To demonstrate the applicability of the new model, a synthetic case study is presented to diagnose a fluid-communication mechanism. The system under consideration consists of two isolated reservoirs and two wells: a single producer completed in the top reservoir in which pressure responses are measured, and an offset well connecting both reservoirs through a fluid communication mechanism. Using the model, type-curves have been utilized to diagnose the hydraulic communication in the offset well. The connectivity of the communication channel in the offset well is also estimated by matching the pressure-transient responses of the model with the measured data. The rate of crossflow between the two reservoirs is also quantified as a function of time. It is observed from the log-log plot that higher connectivity values of the cement sheath causes a steeper merging ramp in the transition region, following a period dominated by the producing reservoir. Although the rate of crossflow depends on the magnitude of the connectivity, it is observed that there is an upper limit controlled by the rock and fluid properties of the individual reservoirs. In addition, the pressure regime at the location of the offset well plays an important role in the rate of crossflow. This study presents a novel analytical approach to detect communication from pressure-transient data, and to quantify the magnitude of crossflow rates between reservoir zones. The formulation captures the influence of interference between wells caused by production. While complementing diagnostic information from other sources to confirm fluid movement from isolated zones, the method also quantifies the connectivity of the communicating media, and the amount of crossflow rates as a continuous function of time.

Abstract:
Communication has always been one of the most important tools through which people can interact with each other. Given that the way we interact with people has never been easy, it has evolved today with more languages, channels and different ways of communicating than before. Communication has a unique role, allowing the solution of certain operational, functional and relational problems, but also employee satisfaction. Recent changes have had an impact on organizations and have increased the importance of managing both internal and external communication. Thus, the communication system is also a system of actions, because the activity and the word are intertwined in negotiations, arguments, counseling, explanation of tasks, conflict resolution. Communication in the educational institution is a premise of the performance of instructive-educational processes, a factor that creates an optimal educational climate, a vector for building the reputation and image of the educational organization and a source of motivation for teachers.

Fuel saving technology can be pursued in many different forms, such as gearing mechanism improvement to powertrain system optimization. With the increasing maturity and availability of sensing technologies such as GPS, motion-detecting sensors, and wireless communications, the vehicle powertrain system design community is embracing these information sources by developing mobile platforms for efficiency improvement. In this paper, a self-contained system architecture is presented that integrates the digital map database, radar senor, V2x, and mobile traffic data from the wireless network for commercial vehicle driver assistance. Each data source utilizes a different communication protocol. As such, the system integration can be challenging and may involve significant investment including engineering development if a suitable system architecture is not defined. This paper introduces a single board computer (SBC) based architecture to integrate these sensors with the powertrain system as a cost-effective implementation. Finally, some field testing data will be presented to show the benefits of using look-ahead information for improving the freight efficiency.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic is revealing that global big tech platforms and social media are core sites for continuous engagement with crisis content for young citizens. This study included twenty-four countries from all continents at the time of the heightened COVID-19 crisis, and our survey targeted 18-40 year olds, Millennials and Gen Zs – overall n = 23,483 respondents. Outcomes show that for young citizens across continents, crisis communication is not just about press briefings. Instead, crisis communication is continuous interaction and engagement across their multiple source environments. Young citizens navigate social media, national media, search sites and messaging apps, they engage with peer communities, science and health experts and – across all countries – substantially with the social media content of the World Health Organization (WHO). Overall, they create their own individual crisis narrative based on the sources they use and the insights they select. This report outlines these new crisis communication dimensions within a transnational social media space and offers numerous suggestions for incorporating social media in crisis response strategies.

Marcellino, Massimiliano, and Dalibor Stevanovic. The demand and supply of information about inflation. CIRANO, November 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.54932/djgr5759.

Full text
Abstract:
In this article we study how the demand and supply of information about inflation affect inflation developments. As a proxy for the demand of information, we extract Google Trends (GT) for keywords such as "inflation", "inflation rate", or "price increase". The rationale is that when agents are more interested about inflation, they should search for information about it, and Google is by now a natural source. As a proxy for the supply of information about inflation, we instead use an indicator based on a (standardized) count of the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) articles containing the word "inflat" in their title. We find that measures of demand (GT) and supply (WSJ) of inflation information have a relevant role to understand and predict actual inflation developments, with the more granular information improving expectation formation, especially so during periods when inflation is very high or low. In particular, the full information rational expectation hypothesis is rejected, suggesting that some informational rigidities exist and are waiting to be exploited. Contrary to the existing evidence, we conclude that the media communication and agents attention do play an important role for aggregate inflation expectations, and this remains valid also when controlling for FED communications.

Abstract:
This research project examines the current state of the practice for disaster public communication, the distrust of government, the training available to public information officers, and the literature available to guide the design of effective public outreach messaging, especially for rapid on-set events. Growing distrust in government had led to lack of public confidence in public agency messaging during emergencies, yet public agency public information officers are using multiple pathways, including both traditional and social media resources, to try to reach impacted communities effectively. The introduction explains the development of wildfire events in the West and their context. A literature review displays the sociological and political research that guides the development of public outreach, warning and evacuation. The findings display the SCU Complex Fire and CZU Complex Fire of 2020 as case studies of outreach efforts during rapid onset wildfire events and explains techniques of data scraping that could enhance public messaging. The analysis categorizes a variety of best practices in disaster communications. The project concludes with a white paper outlining a pathway toward creating a cell phone app that would provide event, time and location specific information about a disaster event, using official sources and social media.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study is the analysis of the development of the theory and methods of ICT usage while teaching higher mathematics engineering students in the United States. It was determined following tasks: to analyze the problem source, to identify the state of its elaboration, to identify key trends in the development of theory and methods of ICT usage while teaching higher mathematics engineering students in the United States, the object of study – the use of ICT in teaching engineering students, the research methods are: analysis of scientific, educational, technical, historical sources; systematization and classification of scientific statements on the study; specification, comparison, analysis and synthesis, historical and pedagogical analysis of the sources to establish the chronological limits and implementation of ICT usage in educational practice of U.S. technical colleges. In article was reviewed a modern ICT tools used in learning of fundamental subjects for future engineers in the United States, shown the evolution and convergence of ICT learning tools. Discussed experience of the «best practices» using online ICT in higher engineering education at United States. Some of these are static, while others are interactive or dynamic, giving mathematics learners opportunities to develop visualization skills, explore mathematical concepts, and obtain solutions to self-selected problems. Among ICT tools are the following: tools to transmit audio and video data, tools to collaborate on projects, tools to support object-oriented practice. The analysis leads to the following conclusion: using cloud-based tools of learning mathematic has become the leading trend today. Therefore, university professors are widely considered to implement tools to assist the process of learning mathematics such properties as mobility, continuity and adaptability.
