Peyron, David. "La construction sociale d'une sous-culture : l'exemple de la culture geek." Thesis, Lyon 3, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012LYO30089.
Full textThis dissertation is about « geek culture » and the emergence of this subcultural identity in recent years in France. This movement, born in North America, has entered the public sphere in a spectacular way and it encourages us to study its sociological reality. Geeks are seen here as fans of imaginary worlds (science-fiction, fantasy…), new technologies lovers, and as first and original audience of the process of cultural convergence defined by Henry Jenkins. The increasing visibility of the geek phenomenon is connected to many practices associated with this process (fanfictions, wide use of digital technology, transmedia and immersive storytelling, etc.). From this point of view, the reflexive moment (the feeling of being part of a collective identity) and the geek trend are both rooted by the beginnings of cultural convergence (from the pulp fictions, and the birth of comic books, to the release of Star Wars, the Lord of the Rings and the first role-playing or video games). It also has to do with the recent growth of links between media, with the success of participatory culture, the possibility of worldwide share thanks to digital technologies and the shift from preassigned identities to chosen ones in our individualistic society

Full textThe plantation is a colonial concern wich is dedicated to the production of speculative colonial produce such as sugar, cocoa, coffee, indigo or roucou. It is also a social place where radically heterogeneous cultures coexist without temporal transition. In french guyana, at least as much elsewhere in the new world, this coexistence takes on the form of a permanent crisis - conscripted amerindians, africans reduced to slavery. Although they are the masters, the europeans who are dragged away from their native soils and deprived from their cultural landmarks have difficulties in dealing with their colonial adventure. In this thesis, the period wich is studied begins with the introduction of the first slaves in 1652 and ends with the first abolition. This study shows how the material life on the ancient plantation, sometimes in its most humble aspects, would organize itself. Soils, communications, production tools, architecture, slaves'material life constitute the mains chapters of it. The constraints of the milieu are analyzed in detail. The present botanic, pedologic and ecological data explain why the soils deceptive fertility in the huge amazonian forest could do nothing but jeopardize the success of the speculative cu both the results of archeological researchs which have been carried out by the author for more than ten years on about thirty sites and the study of written sources provide the main material of this thought which is completed by numerous ethnographic data. Though the world of the plantation is historically and materially very close to the traditional societies, it has however lost a large part of its legibility in contemporary french guyana. Here presented as a transposition attempt of an occidental model into a tropical milieu, the material culture of the french guyanese plantation reveals the difficulties and even often the limits or impasses of colonization

Full textAfter having presented a picture of the different south asian muslim communities, established in america and analysed the history of their presence in the united states, i have furnished some precise demographic and economic data on these populations. I have also examined their socio- cultural and religious integration into american society, at an individual and familial level, with emphasis on both the first and second generations. Finally, i have studied the implementation of institutions, the ethnic identifications and the political organisation of these segments. From the findings of this research. South asians benefit from a very high level of education: this has ensured their structural integration in the united states and has entailed a migration experience rather different from that of the muslim populations that have migrated to europe. Despite this structural integration. Smith asian muslims do remain very keen to perpetuate their ethno- religious heritage, even though this heritage has undergone some transformations, a logical consequence of the diasporic situation. The importance of religion is significant in the identity construction of these migrants. Even before migration, religion has been playing a major role in south asia: in pakistan, where islam is theoretically the raison d'etre of this country ; in india, where muslims form a significant minority. Besides, because of a dialectical relationship between migration, religion and nation, the migration process has provoked the exacerbation of nationalist feelings, which in the case of south asian muslims, has taken a religious dimension. The identification to islam is thus more significant in the country of migration than in the country of origin. Despite an insidious discrimination against islam, a periodic source of identity withdrawal, the islamic religion seems to play a structuring and stabilising role (rather similar to the role played by other religions like catholicism and judaism), which strengthens the migrant in a way, helping him to participate in american society. Lastly, south asian muslim immigrants in the united states seem to be well-equipped to tackle islam rationally, so as to understand the contemporary transformations in the light of the quranic message

Full textThe thesis focuses on sandy soils of Northeast Thailand. A compact and resistant layer developed at low depth is a main constraint for agriculture. The thesis follows a sequence of studies that investigates (i) the physical properties of these soils in various situation natural or cultivated, (ii) the main mechanisms explaining the different physical states recorded and (iii) the research of methods for rehabilitation of damaged soils. Results highlighted the aeolian origin of the soils. This origin gives them a striking textural homogeneity and unique mechanical characteristics. Very sensitive to compaction, they collapse at low water content and under low mechanical pressure. Conventional tillage practices are not suitable as they induce structural instability. However alternative techniques as slotting or biological drilling are efficient

Full textThis study addresses the subject of public life in roman North Africa. The principal sources are archeological remains, especially historical inscriptions, public records, literary works, as well as mosaics and reliefs. A few problems are here dealt with: the Romanization of North Africa culture and its continuation into late antiquity and also the conflict with Christianity that resulted from this wave of acculturalization. This study illustrates the successful diffusion of roman culture in North Africa, though this adaptation was directly related to the diffusion of roman citizenship. The crisis which rocked Rome during the 3rd century did not have a great effect upon this established system of funding and presenting such public spectacles, which remained throughout the christianized empire and there is even evidence which suggests that such festivals continued in those provinces overrun by the invading barbarians, such as the vandals in North Africa

Full textIn first this thesis presents an unusual context : a real city with old structures (Saint-Denis), single case near a impressive capital (Paris) trimmed with rural villages. After we can see the principal object of this study, with the material culture of the habitants of Saint-Denis coming from their stock-list after death. . We can see a way of life interested by the comfort of the eighteenth century's end. We can also see a weakness with the cultural objects and the objects of hygiene. But, all that bring together the habitants of Saint-Denis and the daily universe of the Parisians

Full textThe implicit dimension is a key component to the understanding of organizations. Indeed, service relationships are the fertile ground to its analysis. Within these relationships, the role of third parties, in the activity of the agent in co-action, questions especially the mobilized competence. The agent activity, in turn, explores his/her culture in particular. Culture and competence become two interacting dialectical concepts. The aim of this thesis is to analyze in depth this dialectic in situ. Adopting a social constructivist posture and a cognitive-situational approach, a qualitative study with Agents in Touch with Customers (ACC) of the SNCF was carried to address this issue. For this purpose, we based our analysis on semi-structured interviews combined with an ethnomethodological study, followed by a “confirmatory” survey via focus groups (mirror groups). The results of this research show us that, in situation, a sort of situated culture emerges through the situated and distributed competence; and that this situated culture follows a spiral movement between the implicit and the explicit. It also reveals that this situated culture is an essential element in the competence architecture, in addition to the fact that the distributed competence develops especially in an organization designed as a culture (metaphor of culture)
