Full textThe Bible presents a plethora of looks that God places upon the world and humanity. How can these biblical expressions be understood today? Within my thesis, I support the idea that this questioning opens a way of reflection, thereby introducing a renewed link to visible reality and to the others. Because the analysis oh the French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre reflects how we approach these issues within our media influenced society, the first part is devoted to him. If comprehension of Sartre has a bearing on our era, it proves to be singularly very negative. Other visions, with more subtle shades, allow one to have a different view of the impact of the “eye of God” on individual’s lives. In contrast to Sartre, the reformer, John Calvin, introduces a rupture between the “eye of God” and the way a human looks : the affirmation of the “eye of God” breaks all distinctive logic of the visible world, or the human visible mode. He shows himself like an Invisible which governs the visible. Following the evaluation on the mediation which applies in our view of the world and of other people, I infer in the third part, that the “eye of God” cannot be understood without the notion of sign and its triadic concept. The way suggested by the works of Augustin, Charles Sanders Peirce and Umberto Eco leads me to put forward the assumption that the “eye of God” offers itself as a means towards a deeper level of comprehension of the visible. Refusing to allow oneself to be fascinated by what one sees - manifestly - the divine look becomes, henceforth, aware of that which escapes notice, namely, the invisible

Full textIn his article "m. Francois mauriac et la liberte" (m. Francois mauriac and freedom), published in the nouvelle revue francaise on 1 february 1939, jean-paul sartre, as a joung writer, attacked francois mauriac's concept of the novel. Sartre's criticismof mauriac is examined and the points of view adopted by sartre and mauriac on the latter's novel la fin de la nuit (the end of the night) are then analysed. The analysis demonstrates that the critic and the novalist were defending different ethical codes and consequently different aesthetic positions. By examining the meaning of mauriac's concept of the novel in the light of his personal view of the world, it is possible to establish the limitations of sartres' criticism and to show also the limits of his influenceon mauriac as a novelist

Full textThis dissertation starts out with a case study of the Sciences and Theatre Department of the National Institute of Applied Sciences in Lyon, which offers volunteer students artistic classes within their scientific training: sociology can first help define the features of this unique group. It then attempts to discover the individual, relational, social and cognitive bridges between the students' drama courses, their professional vistas and their personal achievements. Theatre anthropology provides tools for describing the work of the actors in training, while constructivist epistemology lays the basis of science of engineering. Working from both perspectives, one can contend that the two approaches might share common goals, in the fields of design, invention and creation; this leads one to put forth the concept of 'theatrical engineering', a process that conceives and creates live performances, in ways similar to the methods used by engineers for designing their artifacts

Full textThe connection between psychoanalysis and theater dates from Oedipus or, rather, from the Greek tragedy. Therefore, the Freudian myth that has nourished the psychoanalytic theory in a universal level is a "Greek scenario. If we see theater as the literary form that talks about psychoanalysis more than all the other literary forms, and respectively psychoanalysis as the theory of dramatic art, we might as well consider that the greatest European dramatists of the 20th century -Strindberg, Ibsen and Lorca- have created theater characters whose decoding has something to say about the experience of the unconscious. Therefore we are wondering whether psychoanalysis would be possible without theater, without the knowledge that theater has transmitted us on the subject and its passions, if we could think about Freud without thinking about the great dramatists. So how are we going to apply psychoanalysis in a theater play? What is the text's resistance to the analytical interpretation? Our goal is not only to question the literary creation in connection to the symptom, but to study as well the female characters in Ibsen, Strindberg, Lorca in order to support our hypothesis: The woman made hysterical and blamed by the male dramatist with no regard to her structure, her sexuality, her nationality. We wish to open a dialogue with the authors. The Strindberg, Ibsen, Lorca trilogy aims to show an image of the woman "transformed or not" by the psychical structure of the male dramatist. Therefore the theatrical trilogy meets the Freudian trilogy (neurosis — psychosis and perversion)

Full textCaroline court poetry uses conventions inherited from neopetrarchan and neoplatonic literary traditions which appear to be wearing thin. As an expression of an ostentatious court culture, it is based on a visual rhetoric in which the notion of wonder is prominent. Originally referring to religious ecstasy, wonder ceases to be a means of access to the transcendence or the faculty through which ennulation is suggested to the reader. Praise poetry stages the submission of the dazzled gaze of the beholder to the dazzling gaze of the king or patron. Wonder serves the rhetorics of absolutist discourse. Love poetry playfully assimilates sacred wonder to sensual ecstasy, while divine inspiration is derided as fake. The poet gives up his claim to bridge the gap between appearances and essences, and shamelessly dedicates himself to intertextual variations. Metaphors are also derivative as reworkings of conventional metaphors. A study of the gaze in poetry shows a fragmented apprehension of the universe, where orientation seems to be lost and boundaries blurred. The predilection for anamorphosis as a model of deciphering appearances reveals a sceptical attitude towards perception and representation. Scientific discoveries, in the field of optics and astrology in particular, account for paradigmatic shifts in the structures of thought, and render the fiction of a unified, all-encompassing gaze obsolete. The civil war is in turn responsible for deepening the crisis of vision in cavalier poetry by showing the failure of a society based on the royal gaze. The restoration sees the acclimatization of neoclassicism which offers an answer to the metaphysical as well as moral crisis through the centering of perspectives by the rational gaze of the individual

Full textThe twentieth century brought about profound changes in political, economic and social life of Latin American countries, notably Colombia. In the field of literature, there was then a real awareness and commitment on the part of Black intellectuals. From that moment on, the Black man, began to appear in literature as a fully-fledged character and an author. Indeed, for a long time, the participation of the Black in the construction of the Colombian nation was not been mentioned. In addition to his negative image (due to slavery), the Black has suffered for a long time from an obvious invisibility. As a result, in the late 1940s Black intellectuals pointed out in a very clear way the social inequalities, injustices, racism, and discrimination against their fellow men. It is within the framework of these demands and protests in favour of Black man, that the novel of Arnoldo Palacios, The Stars are black was been published in 1949. Thus, we posed our problematic to know how the condition of Black man was been approached in the novel of Arnoldo Palacios. The first part of our thesis will discuss the African presence in Colombia. The second will make an inventory of black presence in Colombian literature. Finally, the third part will analyse The Stars are black through his narrative structure but also the themes addressed by the writer Arnoldo Palacios
