Abstract Formed from the westernmost territories of Hungary, Burgenland became a part of Austria a hundred years ago. The aim of the paper is to answer the question of how Burgenland became integrated into the Austrian society and economy, how its regional inequalities and rural character changed in comparison to the neighbouring Austrian and Hungarian areas, under the influence of Vienna’s major role. The analysis is based on the census data of 1910, 1960/61, 2001 and 2011 and on the mapping of different social and economic indicators. Our data revealed that one hundred years ago, the norther

While there is social security structure and large productive agriculture sector ensuring national food security, more than 14 million South Africans are chronically hungry. Given that access to food is an important legal and political issue in South Africa, it is important to understand the various factors, which enable or hinder the state‘s effort to eradicate chronic hunger. Abstract:
School nutrition programmes are part of the sustainable food value chain. However, as it is seen as a matter for education, these programmes are not always part of the coordinated production and value-adding activities of the chain. Although these programmes have been highlighted as an important intervention to support childhood nutrition, the implementation and maintenance of the programmes are complex and costly. It should therefore be manged well to contribute to the sustainable food value chain. The purpose of this address is to identify what is known about the influence of various system

Abstract:
This paper starts from an empirical observation that levels of hunger or food insecurity in middle-income and high-income countries are often higher than might be expected, and in some cases are rising rather than falling in recent years. We document levels and trends in selected food security indicators for three case study countries: Brazil, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. We argue that, given the availability of resources and state capacity to eradicate hunger in these countries, a process of ‘normalisation’ has occurred, meaning that governments and societies tolerate the persistence

Abstract:
South Sudan is home to one of the world’s worst hunger crises, a consequence of decades of armed conflict and devastating extreme weather events. Conflict, climate change and hunger have forcibly displaced nearly seven million people, out of a population of 11 million. The World Food Programme (WFP) operates in the middle of this intersection. In 2022, WFP provided food assistance to nearly 6 million people. This food assistance has an impact on conflict and peacebuilding dynamics. This report analyses the impact of that assistance, drawing out the contribution of WFP’s programming to enhancin

Abstract:
Trade policy provides a powerful set of levers for accelerating a transition to more inclusive and sustainable agricultural practices. Yet, trade in agriculture is often reliant on unsustainable methods of production, misaligned to tackling hunger, inadequate in support for decent farmer livelihoods, with negative climate and environmental impacts. Several countries are pioneering efforts to reform agricultural support schemes. This briefing highlights two key priorities in aligning trade policy with efforts to reform support for a transition to sustainable and inclusive food systems: core env

Abstract:
This study explores the potential for donor governments and institutions to support the operationalization of the humanitarian, development and peacebuilding (HDP) nexus to respond to the food insecurity crisis in South Sudan and the challenges this presents. South Sudan faces one of the worst hunger crises in the world. Violent conflict, climate shocks and widespread economic crisis have left 70 per cent of the population severely food insecure. Donors have provided nearly $13 billion in official development assistance (ODA) since the country’s independence in 2011, of which a large proportio

Abstract:
Industrial development is central to Cambodia’s economic development as it plans to upgrade the country’s status to an upper-middle-income country by 2030 and to a high-income country by 2050. Equipping the workforce with the skills and competencies that match industrial needs requires a great deal of continuous efforts and resources. In this regard, this paper aims to look into the linkage between skills and transformation based on employers’ perspectives. It explores insights into how companies perceive and use the skills and qualifications of their employees to overcome changes in technolog
