The blue stingray, Dasyatis marmorata capensis is an important recreational shore angling species, especially amongst tournament anglers, in South Africa. The taxonomy and aspects of the biology of this species were investigated from specimens collected between March 1987 and May 1989, from various localities along the southern African coastline. Morphological comparisons were made between Dasyatis pastinaca, Dasyatis marmorata and the local variety. A detailed investigation into the life histories of Chrysoblephus laticeps and c. cristiceps in exploited and unexploited marine environments on the south-east coast of southern Africa is presented. The study provided information necessary for the evaluation of marine reserves as a management option for these and similar reef species. For the present study 106 strandings of Kogia breviceps and 85 strandings of K. sima along the South African coastline between 1880 and 1995 were analysed in order to examine the age and growth, male and female reproduction, diet, stranding patterns, and population genetic structure of both species. Length and weight at birth were about 120cm and 53kg for K. breviceps and about 103cm and 14kg for K. sima. This study examines Cuba’s role in the two southern African countries of Angola and Namibia during the Cold War period. It argues that Cuba’s ideological motivations have been embodied in the mutually reinforcing concepts of proletarian internationalism and anti-imperialism. These conceptual perspectives constitute some of the central variables that influence Cuba’s foreign policy behaviour in international relations. The aim of this thesis has been to reconstruct paleoenvironment, paleohydrology and paleoclimate in coastal southern Mozambique, with emphasis on tracing past flooding events on the lower Limpopo River floodplain. The lyssavirus genus of the Rhabdovirus family is divided into seven genotypes. Genotype 3, Mokola virus, has only been found on the African continent, and has been reported to infect rodents, cats, dogs and humans. The first Mokola virus identification in South Africa was made in 1970, on the east coast of the KwaZulu-Natal province. After 25 years, Mokola virus was again identified in three cats, 650 km south-west of the previous isolation. Mycobacterium tuberculosis has caused a resurgence in pulmonary disease in both developed and developing countries in recent times, particularly amongst people infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. The disease has assumed epidemic proportions in South Africa and in the Eastern Cape Province in particular. Of further concern is the isolation of increasing numbers of multiply drug resistant strains. Knowledge of the genetic capability of this organism is essential for the successful development of novel antibiotics and vaccines in an attempt to bring the global pandemic under control.
