Abstract:
We present a case study on digitalization of Southern Rock Art (“Arte Sureño”) in a prehistoric rock shelter from Los Barrios, Cádiz (southern Iberian Peninsula); there we use SfM techniques to obtain some digital products for both analytic and divulgation goals. This way, we highlight some opportunities that low-cost devices (e.g. no-professional digital camera) and open software have introduced in archaeology today. We made it to converge in a working process to register and manage rock art expressions and their immediate surroundings (i.e. natural stone blocks, walls, niches…). From this ac

Towers, corsairs and smugglers in Calabria Ultra during the French Decade (1806-1815)At the beginning of the nineteenth century, even if the phenomenon of running war had subsided, the watch towers still had an active role in controlling the coasts of Southern Italy. Under the French administration some of them were assigned to customs posts, others continued to report the corsair boats always ready to carry out incursive actions. Merchant ships, fishermen and peasants were still struck by the devastating Turkish-Barbarian cruises, but also by corsairs armed by the British in an eternal strugg

Locomotive planning has been a popular application of classical optimization models for decades, but with very few success stories. There are a host of complex rules governing how locomotives should be used. In addition, it is necessary to simultaneously manage locomotive inventories by balancing the need for holding power against the need for power at other yards. At the same time, we have to plan the need to return foreign power, and move power to maintenance facilities for scheduled FRA appointments. An additional complication arises as a result of the high level of uncertainty in transit t

This policy brief examines the recent developments within the Dawlah Islamiyah (DI) community in Mindanao, Southern Philippines, following the death of Abu Zacariah in Marawi. His demise has sparked significant upheaval, particularly regarding the leadership succession within the DI. Initially, the leader of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) was poised to become the next emir of Dawlah Islamiyah Philippines. However, in a surprising turn of events, he surrendered to the 6th Infantry Division of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. This event, along with other indicators, suggests

Herbicide selection is key to efficiently managing nuisance vegetation in our nation’s waterways. After selecting the active ingredient, there still remains multiple proprietary and generic products to choose from. Recent small-scale research has been conducted to compare the efficacy of these herbicides against floating and emergent species. Therefore, a series of mesocosm and growth chamber trials were conducted to evaluate subsurface applications of the following herbicides against submersed plants: diquat versus coontail (Ceratophyllum demersum L.), hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata L.f. Aquatic herbicides are one of the most effective and widespread ways to manage nuisance vegetation in the US After the active ingredient is selected, often there are numerous proprietary and generic branded products to select from. Federal, state, and non-governmental partners resurveyed landbirds in the Ka?? Rainforest on the Island of Hawai?i in 2019. Point-transect distance sampling was conducted in Hawai?i Volcanoes National Park, Ka?? Forest Reserve, Kap?pala Forest Reserve, and Kap?pala Cooperative Game Management Area. This is the first comprehensive survey of the region since 2008. Through a collaborative effort, monitoring transects were consolidated to provide a consistent, repeatable sampling frame for future surveys. We estimated landbird distribution, density, and abundance for eight surveys since 1976. Chan

Abstract:
Tenure disputes in Southern Africa have created financial and reputational damage for the companies and investors involved. Sectors like sugar and mining have struggled to engage local peoples effectively and to manage local expectations associated with their projects. Disputes in Southern Africa are particularly likely to lead to materially significant events, like work stoppages. They are also more likely to be violent than in any other region in the world, which is a considerable deterrent for foreign direct investment (FDI). This paper examines recent case studies of tenure-related dispute
