Freeman, Dena Gail. "Transforming traditions : the dynamics of cultural variation in the Gamo highlands, southwest Ethiopia." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1999. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1526/.

Abstract:
This thesis is about cultural variation. Its ethnographic focus is the Gamo highlands of southwest Ethiopia, where there are two politico-ritual systems, one based on sacrifices and the other based on initiations. While the sacrificial system is remarkably homogeneous over the area, the initiatory system varies considerably. The central purpose of this work is to try to understand why these two systems exhibit such different degrees of variation in the same setting and among the same people. After describing the structure of the two cultural systems as they exist in the late twentieth century,

Abstract:
Worldwide degradation and conversion of tropical forests affects many species and their provided ecosystem services. Among them are birds, responsible for pollination, seed dispersal, pest control and scavenging. This study, conducted in southwest Ethiopia, compares species composition and bird functional diversity between forest and homegardens close to and far from forest, both in terms of species numbers and bird abundances. Point counts and mist netting were used to obtain data. While the former method detected more species, abundance data from the latter revealed patterns not observed by

Informed by political ecology and using qualitative research methods, notably participant observation, personal interviews, transect walks and analysis of secondary literature and videos, the study documents three major shifts in access, use, control and management of wild coffee and other natural resources in the Yayo district: first, village-level sma

Mathematical growth and yield models were developed for the major plantation timber species, Cupressus lusitanica, growing in Munessa Shashemene State Forest Project (MSSFP), in Southwest Ethiopia, based on data from 106 temporary sample plots. Stand dominant height development was predicted by Schumacher's growth equation as a function of age and site index, defined as dominant height at reference age of 15 years. Initial diameter distributions of trees were generated using the Weibull probability density function with scale and shape parameters predicted as a function of stand parameters. St

Abstract:
There is major concern internationally, and specifically in the Ethiopian afromontane biodiversity hotspot, about the impact of forest habitat fragmentation on biodiversity conservation. This study assessed the effect of land-use change on land-cover pattern, forest patch spatial structure and consequent effects on plant species richness and composition in two areas of southwest Ethiopia: Illubabor and the Gamo highlands of Gamo Gofa. Land-use change analysis was conducted on three sites, I (1500-2000 m altitude) and II and III (1878-2422 m altitude), each of 47,648 ha, in Illubabor and one ar
