Steele, James M. Greenwood Encyclopedia of Homes through World History. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216971078.

Abstract:
In the Americas, Native dwellings were now accompanied with some of the first homes built by Colonial settlers from Europe. The style of homes differed due to the extremes in climate. In Africa, the Middle East, and south Asia, duality in homes also existed, with homes built by European occupants side by side with that of the local residents. As building skills and materials advanced, it is interesting to see the adaptations of homes to their regions, such as the canal houses in the Netherlands and the houses of New Orleans with balconies and courtyards to counteract the heat. In the Americas,

Abstract:
An unfortunate conceptual divide within archaeological scholarship has traditionally divided Native history into “before” and “after” European colonialism. Past research emphasized the disruption wrought by the arrival of Europeans in the Southwest via the introduction of epidemic diseases, market economies, material goods, and alien plants and animals. Recent research emphasizes that many of the early colonial period strategies for cultural persistence were merely variations on the same processes that occurred throughout the Southwest for millennia. When faced with new challenges, Native sout

Abstract This book offers a comprehensive analysis of modern European crisis discourses and focuses primarily on the interwar period, commonly described as a paradigmatic case of the crisis of modernity, and then follows through to the present day. It explores how the multiple crises of civilization, capitalism, social cohesion, liberalism, democracy, socialism, or the nation-state were conceptualized, how and to what extent these spheres were entangled, tracing also the multi-level dialogue of intellectuals, politicians, and experts who employed these discourses. The modern concept of crisis

Abstract:
To veteran travelers of the American Southwest, the name Chaco Canyon invokes an inaccessible, vast land of tremendous vistas and huge, empty stone houses. Today, the Canyon appears as a barren land and most visitors are struck by its apparent inhospitable nature. Yet almost 1000 years ago, during the Medieval period, Chaco Canyon was the hub of a flourishing Pueblo Indian society, with 12 multi-story great houses built of stone and wood, a dozen great kivas (large, subterranean ceremonial structures), and hundreds of smaller habitation sites, pueblos along the intermittent drainage known toda

Abstract:
Nationalism: Past as Prologue began as a single volume being compiled by Ad Akande, a scholar from South Africa, who proposed it to me as co-author about two years ago. The original idea was to examine how the damaging roots of nationalism have been corroding political systems around the world, and creating dangerous obstacles for necessary international cooperation. Since I (Bruce E. Johansen) has written profusely about climate change (global warming, a.k.a. infrared forcing), I suggested a concerted effort in that direction. This is a worldwide existential threat that affects every living t
