Abstract:
Recent molecular studies have detected the occurrence of exotic water frog species (Pelophylaxsp.) in central and western European populations. Here, we report genetic evidence for the occurrence of the Balkan water frog,Pelophylax kurtmuelleri, in southwestern Poland. We found a high frequency of an allele of serum albumin intron-1 and a mitochondrial cytochromebhaplotype specific for this southern taxon in frogs from the Barycz river drainage system. We interpret this finding as evidence of admixture betweenP. kurtmuelleriand the localridibundus-esculentuswater frog population. The origin of

Parmelia submontana is quite a rare epiphytic lichen in both Poland and central Europe. In Poland, it grows mainly in the mountains and in the northern part of the country. We found eight new localities of P. submontana, in northern and southwestern Poland. We report it here as a new species for Wigry National Park. Distribution of the species in Poland is presented on the map.

Abstract:
Nationalism: Past as Prologue began as a single volume being compiled by Ad Akande, a scholar from South Africa, who proposed it to me as co-author about two years ago. The original idea was to examine how the damaging roots of nationalism have been corroding political systems around the world, and creating dangerous obstacles for necessary international cooperation. Since I (Bruce E. Johansen) has written profusely about climate change (global warming, a.k.a. infrared forcing), I suggested a concerted effort in that direction. This is a worldwide existential threat that affects every living t

The present study addresses the implicit monolingual bias in our understanding of polar question-answer sequences by examining them in bilingual conversation. Drawing upon a corpus of naturally-occurring conversational data amongst native Spanish-English bilinguals in the southwestern United States, I target and explore the ‘fit’ between polar questions and answers in this community of practice. In this report, I focus specifically on the dimension of language (non-)concordance between particle answers and the questions they address. Evidence is offered that speakers produce response particles

The cemetery in Gogolin is one of the flat cemeteries with a biritual funeral rite typical for the Upper Silesian-Lesser Poland group of the Lusatian culture. In the north and south-west range of this group, the Częstochowa-Gliwice subgroup was distinguished. In the classic stage of this subgroup, i.e. at the end of the Bronze Age and at the beginning of the Hallstatt period, a distinctive feature of the funeral rites is the prevalence of cemeteries with more inhumations than cremations. The necropolis in Gogolin is the most southwestern site of this subgroup. Inhumation burials dominate at mo
