Brugnara, Frederico Augusto.
The master’s dissertation intends to study the emergence and the influence of the Neo-Eurasianism in the Russian Federation political practice in face of the incidents involving the country and the post-Soviet space in recent years, mostly after the Crimea Peninsula annexation by Russia. The dissertation also considers the importance that energy resources exert within the Eurasian space in order to propel the Russia to a global superpower position similar to the formerly occupied by the USSR. In this sense, we intend to demonstrate that the Russian natural resources serves as an implementing tool of the neoeurasianism policy by the Kremlin for power maintenance and regional influence. Therefore, our study was divided into four chapters, trying to establish and describe the argument key elements: Geography, the Russian identity particularities, the Geopolitics and the energy question. Based on the study of theory and on the events observation, we conclude that there are, to some extent, direct influence of the neoeurasianism ideas in the actions perpetrated by the Kremlin, but, on the other hand, some situations reflects only the opportunity of the moment, not resulting from a previous geopolitical project.

Full textThis dissertation makes use of Pierre Bourdieu’s and Pascale Casanova’s theoretical work to analyse the hitherto unexplored Soviet and post-Soviet Russian literature in Lithuania through the methodological lens of the sociology of literature. The research focuses on the poetry that dominated the literary scene within the specified time frame. The Russian literature of Lithuania is examined as a partly independent segment of the literary field, whose characteristics unfold through its relationships with the national fields of Lithuanian and Russian literature as well as the global space of literature. The structure and development of this segment and its relations to the national literary fields are analysed by way of exploring the individual and collective strategies of the agents of this segment. The publications which represent the different poles in the literary field tend to emphasise the minority or diasporic identity associated with this segment: during the Soviet times – Literary Lithuania, a journal-almanach censored by the Soviet ideology and the Samisdat almanach For One’s Own; after the fall of the Soviet Union – Vinius, a journal published by the Lithuanian Writers’ Union and the online project The Indoeuropean Dictation. The individual strategies of the poets of different generations, which are interpreted as respectively stories of failure (Jurij Dubasov, Jurij Grigorjev, Mikhail Didusenko) and success (Jurij Kobrin, Georgij Jefremov, Lena Eltang) reveal not... Full textIn the Soviet Union the party develops a system of institutions aiming at controlling the cultural sphere and the written production. Such a complex system is formed by the Glavlit, the most important censorial institution, the Union of Writers, the world of publishing (which is nationalized and centralized), and a unique creative method, the socialist realism. The section of literary translation and of reception of foreign literature is equally kept under control. The Translators' section is charged of training new soviet translators; the foreign Commission decides which western authors and books can be translated. Both of them are part of the Union of Writers. The foreign department of Glavlit controls the printed material coming from abroad and its distribution. It also decides the conditions of reading and is charged of censoring both the foreign text and the translated one. At the same time, the aesthetic and normative code of socialist realism begins to influence translation theory, which follows the instructions of official literary criticism and promotes a free translation approach to texts. Such an approach allows translators and editors to introduce textual changes in an arbitrary way.

Full textThe present research is a geographical approach of the Russian revolution. More precisely it is focused on the soviets movement within that social disruption, whose time frame lies between 1905 and 1921 and, its spatial ambit, the territory of the ancient tsarist empire. Therefore, this work starts from the assumption that the councils movement that emerged during the revolutionary conjuncture, in Russian territorial formation , represented the engendering of new territorialities, in a scenery of dwindling of the state-owned territoriality. In this perspective, our dissertation still considers that the soviets territorialities were important strategic axis that the Bolsheviks, as agents of the disruption, mobilized to reassertion of State authority, within the geographical ambit of the ancient tsarist sovereignty.

Full textThe crumbling of the Soviet Union at the end of 1991 has represented a decisive moment for Central Asia. Moscow's control over the area favoured the formation of state actors characterized by artificial frontiers and an extraordinary ethnic mix. On the other hand, the soviet dissolution has led to a new geopolitical situation. The lack of power experimented in the region has generated an international diplomatic race, with the main state actors eager to increase their influence over Central Asia. This mainly due to the strategic relevance of the area, especially related to the energy dimension. By starting from these assumptions, the research project aims to analyze – by adopting an historical-political approach – the geopolitics of energy with reference to Turkmenistan, a country that has at its disposal the fourth biggest reserves of natural gas globally. On the basis of the specific properties of this raw material on the one hand, and of the impact of its possession on the turkmen political sphere, on the other, the issue is defined. The goal is to establish whether Turkmenistan has the chance to increase its future geopolitical role, becoming an actor at the heart of regional and global strategic dynamics.

Full textThe research works submitted for the habilitation procedure (the monograph Hostage and Partner of Time: Soviet and Post-Soviet Lithuanian Literary Criticism (1945–2000) and articles) analyse the development of Soviet and post-Soviet Lithuanian literary criticism from 1945 to 2000. The first part of the research deals with Soviet-era literary criticism and highlights the most important tendencies in its development, reveals the factors that influenced that development, discusses the phenomenon of Socialist Realism, and examines the methodological orientation of literary criticism. The analysis focuses on the first post-war decade, when literary criticism was forced to become a tool for the propagation of the Communist Party ideology. Later, beginning with the mid-1950’s, the analysis concentrates on the relative liberation of literary criticism and its modernisation, which came about as a result of the most skilled critics choosing alternative methodologies rather than the sociological art interpretation: phenomenology, structuralism, and reception theory. The second part of the research surveys the process of literary criticism in the first decade of Lithuanian independence, accenting attempts at methodological renewal, discussing new tasks, and summarising the results. Having stated the methodological innovations in academic criticism (postcolonialism, cultural studies, feminism), inspired by the experience of the Lithuanian émigré researchers and the Western humanities in... Full textWhy did so many British travellers go to Soviet Russia ? Depression, unemployment, the failure of the Labour government, the loss of values and the disintegration of religious faith, all this created a state of despair which was one of the major causes of the fascination for Russia. Who went to Russia ? Famous politicians and intellectuals (H. G. Wells, G. B. Shaw, the Webbs, B. Russel or Mac Millan) or less famous travellers hav all written about their exoerience in the URSS. How was the trip organised ? If the main aim of the Soviet government was to seduce the most important visitors (Potemkin fashion) they neglected the mass which was only regarded as purveyors of western currencies. Did the visitors catch a glimpse of the soviet reality ot the time ? The dictatorship, the privileges of the nomemklatura, bureaucracy and corruption, starvation and poverty, terror and labour camps, everything was disclosed, if not denounced. And yet the URSS became an experimental model of the British visitors, an intellectual spur which enabled them to build the Welfare State and the National Health Service after 1945

In Russia, the portrayal of nature has always been an essential aesthetic intersection. This intersection has seen the moulding of the leading philosophical and artistic tensions which have shaped Russia’s culture. Against the backdrop of this important cultural issue, this thesis studies the different approaches to nature and landscape in Russian and Soviet cinema. The thesis is divided into three parts. Identification of the Russian landscape charts the history of aesthetic debates about nature which cinema both inherits and assimilates. Components of cinema landscapes catalogues the different landscape approaches which clashed in Russia cinema during the first thirty years of the 20th century. This clash gives rise, in this dissertation, to the concept of the ‘third landscape’, and, additionally, the categories of 'transparent landscape' and 'landscape as presence and apparition'. In the third part, Aesthetic violence of landscape, this methodology is applied to the historical analysis of Russian and Soviet cinema up until the end of the 1960s.

Full textIt would be september the second of 1931, on a private letter dispatched by some B. Breslow acting as Comercial Representative of the URSS in France, when Le Corbusier received the invitation to participate in the contest of the one that would be for many the essential building of the country, the Palace of the Soviets in Moscow. A building that for that matter would not only enbodies russian¿s working class will, but also should become in the same way, there where the Salvador cathedral was built, the artistic-architectural monument of the still struggling soviet capital. This and not else is the point in which the actual text it is enrolled: on the developed by the project inside the number 35 of the Rue de Sèvres in Paris, with the objective of dusting off some of the key aspects of that first creative track blurred by history. Going back along the line of the Palace for the Soviets of Moscow.

Full textThis study considers the notion of linguistic stereotypes and analyses the function of stereotypes in institutional political discourse. By describing semantic phenomena observed in the corpus of such discourse, and by focussing on combinatory patterns, the use of metaphors and certain syntax models, we have developed a typology of linguistic representations of stereotypes in the body of political discourse in Russian and French. From the perspective of the semantic theory set out by H. Putnam and developed by B. Fradin, J.-C. Anscombre, J. Bartmiński, les stereotypes are understood as open lists of non-referential characteristics, stemming from community-based beliefs associated with language elements. “Diagnosis” linguistic models, for which we shall present the typology, identify the semantic stereotypes in political speeches. The function of stereotypes in the context of augmentative sequences is considered from the perspective of the theory of stereotypes developed by J.-C. Anscombre. One of the objectives is to observe how stereotypes, revealed through lexical and syntactic clues, are used to form representations of objects, people and phenomena relevant to political discourse in Russian and French. To meet this objective, stereotypes, which are memory recalls to past sayings and events, are explored and interpreted through notions of dialogism. The use, creation, resumption, redistribution and transposition of stereotypical characteristics are analyzed as being part of a linguistic strategy, intentionally used to constitute or reproduce representations to ensure persuasiveness in political communication

Full textThe final thesis approaches the creation of the architect J. Šeibokas as well as his insights in the context of divers sociocultural periods. In addition, the pedagogical activity of the architect is described and the comments of the colleagues are presented in correspondence to some analysed points. The Master paper reflects the essential principles of architect‘s creation and similarly proves the value of J. Šeibokas‘ creation and its survival threats. The main conclusion is, that the works of J. Šeibokas are architecturally and creatively valuable. Consequently, the creation of this architect is a weighty contribution to the contemporary Lithuanian architecture. The introduction of this research work defines the relevance and the exploration level of the Master thesis, the object, the goals and the methods of research used. The introduction also indicates the sources coherent to the research object. The first part of the Master paper is the analysis of J. Full textThe Aim of the research is to define and analyse works of Lithuanian abstract painting during the Soviet period by establishing and comparing the diversity of criticism and practices of abstract art in Lithuania over several decades (from the end of the 1950s to the 1980s). In this thesis abstract paining is treated as a radical artistic reaction in Lithuania in terms of its theoretical and historical characteristics, and the general artistic context during the Soviet period is analysed in terms of socio-political issues. This is a study of the most celebrated examples of Western European art (also American art) presenting the most recent tendencies that developed out of them and juxtaposing it with the Central European culture (as the area of Soviet influence). Western European culture and its artistic movements were a complete opposition to the artificially built Eastern Block during the Soviet period. The forced separation of this period defined its unique qualities that found one expression in Central Europe and a different one in countries occupied by the Soviets (eg. in Lithuania); it also formed the position of freedom of an alternative art. Whereas in the West abstraction, in its own time, was the great boom of modernism because it freed painting from the traditional language of ‘representation’ and illustration, in Lithuania, in its local context, it had more functions: it was considered to be the great achievement of late modernism that helped to discover newer than... Full textMaster’s thesis analyses what victims of the Soviet reality are ironized in the Lithuanian and Czech novels written within 1987-1989. Research material and sources - Milan Kundera’s novel Nepakeliama būties lengvybė (The Unbearable Lightness of Being, 1987) and Ričardas Gavelis’ novel Vilniaus pokeris (Vilnius Poker, 1989), both of which depict the Soviet reality. The choice of novels was determined by plot difference and common political situation. The theoretical part of the paper presents the theory of the possibility of ironization and irony functions. The research part of the paper analyses ironized victims of the Soviet reality in Kundera’s novel Nepakeliama būties lengvybė and Gavelis’ novel Vilniaus pokeris. The paper reveals that different victims of the Soviet reality are ironized in the novels. The Soviet reality in Kundera’s novel is ironized through the choice of depicting life and existence, life and objective reality as irony victims. Each character tries to answer the following questions: whether what is happening in the Soviet reality is correct? Whether betrayal, prison, lie and cheapness are the things which should really prevail in the world? The concept of culture is presented differently in Kundera’s novel: a) culture promotes human maturity and reflects settled values; b) culture is a reflection of the change of values and the way of rebellion against the Soviet reality. The Soviet reality in Gavelis novel is ironized through the choice of cultural... [to full text]

Full textThis essay aims to present a reading of the book Red Calvary, from Isaac Babel (1893 - 1940). The perusal undertaken sought to investigate the dialetic relations between History and fictional texts, once the Bábel\'s narratives approach the Russian-Polish Civil War, which occurred between 1920 and 1921. At the same time, the particular forms of representation of the heroic and of the epic allowed to understand Red Calvary as a kind of failed epic and conducted to a reflection about babelian realism and the possibility of characterizing his book as a novel. On the book, fragmentation, non-linear and episodic organization of conflicts, the refusal to chronological order and the variety of narrators and voices of the text seem to stage the difficulty of the romanesque traditional form to aesthethically incorporate the experience of the war and of the contradicting and convulse matter. Keywords: Isaac Babel; Modernism; Novel; Russian Literature; Sovietic Literature.

Full textSubject to the principle of the organization of democratic centralism and to the authority of the communist party, the soviets at all levels formed, in the ussr, aunified system of organs of statepower. By ending the substitution of the party's organs to those of the state with a view to establishing a rule-of-law state, gorbatchov's reforms, or perestroika, gave the soviets a political legitimacy. They then demanded, at a local level, tehir autonomy in relation to the central power, which led to the adoption of the concept of "local self-government", a first step towards decentralization in russia. However, the practival application of this concept first clashed with the come back of centralism after the events of august 1991, then with the will of the regions to become fulltime elements of the federation of russia, finally with the russian tradition of direct democracy in the management of local affairs

Full textThere was no real, programmatic Surrealism in Lithuania between the two wars, when the historical Surrealist movement was at its peak; nor was there any influence of Surrealism here in the second half of the twentieth century. In this work the term the surreal is used as an aesthetic category pointing to the links with some of the features of Surrealism as a modernist movement and its principles of image creation. The divide between the concepts of the surreal and the surrealist aspect is important in this dissertation: the former term is not necessarily related to historical Surrealism. In this dissertation an attempt is made to crystallize the features of the surreal which were topical for Lithuanian art in the second half of the twentieth century. The thesis aims to single out the concept of the surreal and develop its content; to examine the artwork of Lithuanian painters that contains the features of the surreal as an original artistic phenomenon. Surreal artwork belongs to the 'margins' and 'the small narrative' of Lithuanian art in the second half of the twentieth century, and can be treated as a partial opposition to the big canonical narrative and the predominance of the expressionist trend. Although the manifestations of the surreal in Lithuanian art did not shape an independent trend in art, an attempt has been made to expand the main narrative of the Lithuanian art of the second half of the twentieth century with the a small narrative of the surreal.

Kazak intellectuals of Alash Orda to the Soviet Socialist Republics and their role in the establishment of the Kazak ASSR. In the course of events they acted first together with Russian liberal democrats, then they sought to establish a national government and fought against the Bolsheviks, but after 1920 they chose to stay in the USSR and join the modernization process of their homeland alongside the Bolsheviks. In the mainstream academic discourse the local leaders in the republics of the USSR are generally considered as passive victims of the Soviet policies. The members of the Kazak national movement of Alash Orda are also neglected as weak political figures after they had accepted the Soviet rule. But they continued their struggle for enlightening the Kazak people in 1920s. Their collaboration with the Bolsheviks was concomitant to their motives of modernizing the Kazaks. Their role in the Soviet Kazakstan did not come to an end after their acceptance of the Soviet sovereignty but it continued. My argument is that the struggle of the members of Alash Orda was in continuity with their program before the revolution, and their cooperation with the Bolsheviks was a way to realize their objectives, and it opened a sphere for them to have a role in the formation of the Kazak ASSR.
