Abstract:
AbstractSeed germination and dormancy are vital components of seed quality; hence, understanding these processes is essential for a sound seed production system. The two processes are closely interrelated and regulated, both by genetic as well as environmental factors. While dormancy provides an inherent mechanism aimed at the survival of the plant species to withstand adverse external conditions by restricting the mature seed from germinating, the ability of the dehydrated seed to remain viable and produce a vigorous seedling upon hydration under favourable conditions is the key to the survival and perpetuation of the plant species. In addition, quality seed is expected to result in timely and uniform germination under favourable field conditions after sowing to establish a healthy crop stand. Therefore, in seed technology, dormancy is not considered a desirable trait in the seed lots used for sowing. Thus, to achieve the highest germination percentage, understanding the factors controlling these two interlinked and contrasting processes is vital. In seed testing and seed trade, knowledge of seed germination and dormancy is needed for a reliable assessment of seed quality and its planting value, and to make right decisions. Though much is yet to be understood, the present status of knowledge on these aspects has made significant advances, especially in genetic control, molecular mechanism, and physiological and environmental factors influencing germination and dormancy. The information compiled in this chapter may help the seed technologists in developing new methods for breaking dormancy and testing germination,

Abstract:
Abstract Scotland was once a largely forested country, but after centuries of human influence, only a tiny fraction of the original forest area remains. With one of the lowest forest covers of any European country and the majority consisting of non-native plantations, increasing the amount of native woodland is an urgent need. The natural expansion of native woodland is limited by three main factors in Scotland: browsing by wild deer, a shortage of regeneration niches, and a shortage of seed sources. In many areas, the process of natural regeneration is, therefore, very slow or entirely absent for some species. Cairngorms Connect is a land management partnership established to restore habitats and natural processes to 60,000 ha of the Scottish Highlands. Woodland expansion is a key goal—specifically, by departing from the recent norm of planting and aiming to enable expansion by natural processes. We have devised a Before-After-Control-Impact experimental trial to test methods of accelerating the natural expansion of native broadleaves via applied nucleation. The trial compares two methods of opening up regeneration niches by cutting the dense understorey vegetation, as well as two methods of seed source establishment by sowing or planting. Through detailed monitoring and thorough documentation of management methods, this Seed Source Establishment Trial will inform restoration efforts in Scotland and further afield.

Abstract:
AbstractWith the expansion of precision and intensive agriculture, seed quality, which alone could contribute up to 15–20 per cent in terms of crop productivity, has assumed greater importance. Every care is taken not only to produce high-quality seeds and maintain the same through various stages of production, from growing conditions of the seed crop to pre-harvest, harvest, processing and storage activities, but also to adopt certain technologies to further improve the performance of seeds upon sowing of the crop under a wide range of environments. These technologies, collectively known as ‘enhancement’, cover a variety of methods applicable to different crop species and aimed at meeting specific requirements, such as unfavourable growing conditions of hard/acidic/sodic soil, high or low temperature, excess or deficient rainfall, etc., as well as the stress imposed by the presence of pests and diseases that affect crop performance, particularly during the early vegetative stage resulting in poor seed emergence, crop establishment and vegetative growth. Selection of the appropriate and cost-effective technologies is important in accruing the best results from seed enhancement.

AbstractThis paper describes the outline of the video tutorial prepared for vegetation workers and relevant officers in Bhutan to learn how vegetation works are to be done in remote areas. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA for short) took a project on cutting unstable slopes in Gangthangkha, Wangdue, Bhutan, so that they should be gentler than 45° to improve slope stability with vegetation works. Particularly stabilizing slopes along Prime National Highway No. 1 (PNH-1 for short) was the overriding priority because slope failures along this highway have reportedly occurred in rainy seasons. Before vegetation works were carried out on the studied slope of the project, the authors conducted germination tests to choose seeds and methods suitable for the vegetation works. They chose Paspalum Atratum, Ruzi grass, and GM mixed (Grass Mixture seed formulating of Cock’s foot 70% and Italian Ryegrass 30% of 100 kg) based on their test results. The soil thickness associated with sowing was set at 5 cm. The authors tried the following types of vegetation methods on the studied site. Type A is arranging on the slope stripes of soil mixed with seeds and fertilizer, Type B is spreading out a five cm-thick seeds-mixed soil layer over the slope, and Type C is transplanting germination beds. In conclusion, Type C is the best in terms of its performance because the whole slope is quickly covered with already grown plants. In Type B, it is not until grass covers the entire slope that the slope is finally stabilized. Type A is good for seeds-mixed soil stripes, but it takes time for the grass to spread gradually over the whole slope.

Abstract:
AbstractHealthy seeds play an important role in growing a healthy crop. Seed health testing is performed by detecting the presence or absence of insect infestation and seed-borne diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, and viruses. The most detrimental effect of seed-borne pathogens is the contamination of previously disease-free areas and the spread of new diseases. Sowing contaminated or infected seeds not only spreads pathogens but can also reduce yields significantly by 15–90%. Some of the major seed-borne diseases affecting yield in cereals, oilseeds, legumes, and vegetables, particularly in the warm and humid conditions prevailing in the tropical and sub-tropical regions, are blast and brown spot of rice, white tip nematode and ear-cockle in wheat, bacterial leaf blight of rice, downy mildews, smuts, head mould, seedling rots, anthracnose, halo blight, and a number of viral diseases. Hence, detection of seed-borne pathogens, such as fungi (anthracnose, bunt, smut, galls, fungal blights), bacteria (bacterial blights, fruit rots, cankers), viruses (crinkle, mottle, mosaic), and nematodes (galls and white tip), which transmit through infected seed to the main crop, is an important step in the management strategies for seed-borne diseases. Thus, seed health testing forms an essential part of seed certification, phytosanitary certification, and quarantine programmes at national and international levels. Detection of seed-borne/transmitted pathogens is also vital in ensuring the health of the basic stock used for seed production and in maintaining the plant germplasm for future research and product development. Besides the precise and reproducible testing methods, appropriate practices during seed production and post-harvest handling, including seed treatment and storage, are important components of seed health management and sustainable crop protection.
