Abstract:
Die Studie geht der Frage nach, inwieweit Bildungssysteme von Gesellschaften die vorfindlichen Muster intragenerationaler Mobilität prägen und diese sich wiederum auf die Strukturierung sozialen Handelns auswirken. Je nach Grad der Standardisierung, Stratifizierung und horizontaler wie vertikaler Differenzierung von Bildungssystemen werden "credentialistische" und "nichtcredentialistische" Gesellschaften unterschieden. Es wird vermutet, daß in credentialistischen Gesellschaften Bildungstitel die berufliche Allokation wesentlich prägen, was in einem niedrigen Ausmaß intragenerationaler sozialer Mobilität resultiert. Da Bildungstitel in nichtcredentialistischen Ländern nur in geringem Maße als "Screening-Devices" verwendet werden können, ist in solchen Gesellschaften ein höheres Ausmaß intragenerationaler Mobilität zu erwarten. Das Ausmaß intragenerationaler Mobilität in einer Gesellschaft wiederum kann als Indikator des Schließungsgrades beruflicher Positionen aufgefaßt werden. "Geschlossene Positionen" ermöglichen die Generierung "positionaler Renditen", so daß in credentialistischen Gesellschaften stärker als in nichtcredentialistischen Privilegierungen beziehungsweise Benachteiligungen an die Besetzung beruflicher Positionen geknüpft sind. Dementsprechend sind in credentialistischen Gesellschaften ausgeprägtere Formen kollektiven Handeln zu erwarten, die auf die Verteidigung von Privilegien beziehungsweise deren Abbau zielen. Diese Thesen werden an Mobilitäts- und Einstellungsdaten aus sechs Ländern, die auf den Erhebungen des "International Social Justice Project" (1991) basieren, getestet. Es läßt sich zeigen, daß in Westdeutschland und Polen als credentialistischen Ländern sowohl intragenerationale Stabilität wie auch die Strukturierung von Einstellungen stärker ausgeprägt sind als in den weniger credentialistischen Gesellschaften USA und Rußland. Ostdeutschland und Großbritannien nehmen Mittelpositionen ein.
The study investigates how educational systems determine the patterns of intragenerational mobility in different societies as well as the patterns of social action. "Credentialist" and "noncredentialist" societies are distinguished according to the degree of standardization, stratification, vertical and horizontal differentiation of their educational systems. It is assumed that educational titles have a strong impact on occupational allocation in credentialist societies, leading to a low degree of intragenerational social mobility. Since educational titles cannot be used as "screening devices" in noncredentialist countries, intragenerational mobility is expected to be higher in these countries. The extent of intragenerational mobility can be viewed as an indicator of the degree of closure of occupational positions in a given society. In "closed positions", "positional rents" can be generated, thus privileges and disadvantages are more strongly connected with occupational positions in credentialist countries than in noncredentialist. Therefore, collective actions to challenge or to defend privileges are more likely in credentialist societies. These hypotheses are tested for six countries using data of the "International Social Justice Project" (1991). It can be shown that intragenerational mobility as well as the structuration of attitudes are more pronounced in the credentialist countries Poland and West Germany than in the noncredentialist countries USA and Russia. East Germany and the United Kingdom are located between these two groups of societies.

Abstract:
Background: Studies with experimental administration of alcohol offer inconsistent approaches and interpretations in which ways an acute alcohol exposure affects the HPA-system and the cortisol secretion. So far published alcohol experiments differ in alcohol application, the possibility of alcohol self-administration at the subjects own discretion as well as the age of the participants. Question: Is cortisol secretion modified by gender during alcohol infusion? Do men and women show different cortisol levels under alcohol exposure when compared to the baseline? Is there a dose-response relationship between cortisol secretion and acute alcohol exposure? Have family history, smoking habits and alcohol induced side effects like nausea an influence on the cortisol secretion under alcohol exposure? Materials and methods: 48 18 year old subjects participated in two identical sessions in which they were able to regulate their maximum blood alcohol concentration up to a safety limit of 1.2 ‰ (i.e., 0.12%). The experiment was conducted by using a special software for self-infusion of ethanol (CASE) which guided the participants through a two and a half hours long experiment. CASE is founded on a validated physiologically-based pharmacokinetic model and involves calculating the infusion volume needed to increase the blood alcohol concentration in a linear manner. The BAC increases after each alcohol request by 0,075 ‰ (i.e., 0.0075%) within in two and a half minutes. If the subject infuses no alcohol the blood alcohol concentration will decrease by 0.01 ‰ (i.e., 0.001%) per minute. Through the precise calculation of the infusion rate, individual differences can be eliminated. Cortisol levels were measured at five time points: an initial baseline measurement and four measurements at fixed time points during the alcohol self-administration of subjects with two completed alcohol experiments. As an appropriate measure to examine the effect of alcohol self-administration on cortisol secretion, the maximum blood alcohol concentration was determined. In addition the day of experiment, gender and family history were observed as well as exploratory maximum nausea and smoking habits. Results: In conclusion, the results confirmed that women have higher cortisol levels than men at baseline and under alcohol influence. Blood alcohol concentration as examined influencing variable was shown to have different effects on the HPA system on day one and two. On the first day of experimentation there was no effect of blood alcohol concentration on the HPA system. On the second day a dose-response relationship could be identified between cortisol secretion and acute alcohol exposure. Individually higher blood alcohol concentrations attenuated cortisol stronger in comparison to subjects with lower blood alcohol concentrations. Family history, smoking habits and unpleasant side effects (nausea) did not affect the cortisol secretion under alcohol exposure in this series of experiments. Conclusions: Current data suggests that alcohol experiments affect the cortisol secretion in young social drinkers. These findings could be detected for the first time. Up to this point there has not been an experimental study that investigated and evaluated the dose-effect relationship between cortisol secretion and alcohol in a study design which uses intravenous alcohol self-administration. It can be theorized that the first day of experimentation is suitable as a settling-in phase due to unspecific confounding factors, whereas the second day can be considered, in an identical setting, apt for hypothesis testing. The increased cortisol level in women when compared to men is consistent with previous studies and there was no indication that family history, smoking habits and alcohol induced unpleasant side effects have an influence on cortisol secretion.

Der Gegensatz zwischen einer schöpferischen Persönlichkeit und der Macht gehört zu den ewigen Themen der menschlichen Kulturgeschichte. Dieses Thema war aktuell sowohl im Zeitalter der ägyptischen Pharaonen als auch in dem der Feudalmonarchien und es bleibt aktuell in unserer Gegenwart. Als ein Teil dieses Weltthemas ist die Frage der sozialen Lage des Komponisten im System eines totalitären Staates zu betrachten, wie es im 20. Jahrhundert über 70 Jahre in der Sowjetunion herrschte. Da es keine allgemeingültige Bestimmung des Begriffes sowie des Wesens eines 'totalitären Staates' gibt, erlaube ich mir, mich eines vom italienischen Schriftsteller Curzio Malaparte geprägten Aphorismus' zu bedienen: 'Was ist ein totalitärer Staat? Kollektives Handeln ist erforderlich um nachhaltige Entwicklungspfade in gekoppelten sozial-ökologischen Systemen zu erschließen, fernab von gefährlichen Kippelementen. Ohne anderen Modellierungsprinzipien ihren Nutzen abzuerkennen, schlägt diese Dissertation die Agent-Umwelt Schnittstelle als die mathematische Grundlage für das Modellieren sozial-ökologischer Systeme vor. Zuerst erweitert diese Arbeit eine Methode aus der Literatur der statistischen Physik über Lerndynamiken, um einen deterministischen Grenzübergang von etablierten Verstärkungslernalgorithmen aus der Forschung zu künstlicher Intelligenz herzuleiten. Die resultierenden Lerndynamiken zeigen eine große Bandbreite verschiedener dynamischer Regime wie z.B. Fixpunkte, Grenzzyklen oder deterministisches Chaos. Zweitens werden die hergeleiteten Lerngleichungen auf eine neu eingeführte Umwelt, das Ökologisches Öffentliches Gut, angewendet,. Sie modelliert ein gekoppeltes sozial-ökologisches Dilemma und erweitert damit etablierte soziale Dilemmaspiele um ein ökologisches Kippelement. Bekannte theoretische und empirische Ergebnisse werden reproduziert und neuartige, qualitativ verschiedene Parameterregime aufgezeigt, darunter eines, in dem diese belohnungsoptimierenden Lern-Agenten es vorziehen, gemeinsam unter einem Kollaps der Umwelt zu leiden, als in einer florierenden Umwelt zu kooperieren. Drittens stellt diese Arbeit das Optimierungsparadigma der Lern-Agenten in Frage. Die drei Entscheidungsparadimen ökonomischen Optimierung, Nachhaltigkeit und Sicherheit werden systematisch miteinander verglichen, während sie auf das Management eines umweltlichen Kippelements angewendet werden. Es wird gezeigt, dass kein Paradigma garantiert, Anforderungen anderer Paradigmen zu erfüllen, sowie dass das Fehlen eines Meisterparadigmas von besonderer Bedeutung für das Klimasystem ist, da dieses sich am Rand zwischen Parameterbereichen befinden kann, wo ökonomische Optimierung weder nachhaltig noch sicher wird.
Collective action is required to enter sustainable development pathways in coupled social-ecological systems, safely away from dangerous tipping elements. Without denying the usefulness of other model design principles, this thesis proposes the agent-environment interface as the mathematical foundation for the design of social-ecological system models. First, this work refines techniques from the statistical physics literature on learning dynamics to derive a deterministic limit of established reinforcement learning algorithms from artificial intelligence research. Illustrations of the resulting learning dynamics reveal a wide range of different dynamical regimes, such as fixed points, periodic orbits and deterministic chaos. Second, the derived multi-state learning equations are applied to a newly introduced environment, the Ecological Public Good. It models a coupled social-ecological dilemma, extending established repeated social dilemma games by an ecological tipping element. Known theoretical and empirical results are reproduced and novel qualitatively different parameter regimes are discovered, including one in which these reward-optimizing agents prefer to collectively suffer in environmental collapse rather than cooperating in a prosperous environment. Third, this thesis challenges the reward optimizing paradigm of the learning equations. It presents a novel formal comparison of the three decision paradigms of economic optimization, sustainability and safety for the governance of an environmental tipping element. It is shown that no paradigm guarantees fulfilling requirements imposed by another paradigm. Further, the absence of a master paradigm is shown to be of special relevance for governing the climate system, since the latter may reside at the edge between parameter regimes where economic welfare optimization becomes neither sustainable nor safe.

Abstract:
Zielsetzung des im Rahmen vom WWTF geförderten Projektes "Creative Industries in Vienna" durchgeführten Forschungsvorhabens ist es, die Entwicklung der Kunst als soziales System und Medium der Kommunikation in Europa und in Wien exemplarisch herauszuarbeiten. Damit wird der vorherrschende CI-Diskurs um eine systemtheoretische Perspektive erweitert. Im hier präsentierten Vorbericht werden die dafür aufbereiteten theoretischen Ausgangspositionen, Fragestellungen und Zielsetzungen dargestellt. Zu diesem Zweck wird zunächst in der Einleitung das Gesamtprojekt im internationalen CI-Diskurs verortet und der Mainstream der Diskussion aus systemtheoretischer Perspektive in Frage gestellt. Die Entscheidung, einen systemtheoretischen Zugang zu wählen, wird bereits in der Einleitung begründet und durch die Gliederung der Gesamtarbeit vorgestellt. Im Kapitel 1. Theorie wird die angewandte Theorie der sozialen Systeme im Kontext des sogenannten radikalen Konstruktivismus verortet und die übergeordnete Fragestellung der Zusammenhänge von Kunst Politik und Wirtschaft aus systemtheoretischer Perspektive aufbereitet. Im abschließenden Kapitel zur sogenannten Habermas-Luhmann-Kontroverse wird schließlich die Entscheidung für die Systemtheorie noch einmal veranschaulicht und reflektiert.

Der Zusammenhang von technischer Entwicklung und gesellschaftlicher Modernisierung wird mit Mitteln der systemtheoretischen Soziologie untersucht. Zu diesem Zweck werden die Konzepte "Technik" und "soziale Evolution" reformuliert. "Technik" ist ein spezieller Typ der Grenzbildung von Systemen, die Ereignisse ihrer Umwelt als kausal verknüpft beobachten; Technik wird demnach definiert als fixierte Erwartung, die sich auf kausal verknüpfte Umweltereignisse bezieht. "Soziale Evolution" ist der Typ des Strukturwandels von sozialen Systemen, der sich aus der Selektion und Restabilisierung von Strukturvariationen ergibt. Aus soziologischer Sicht ist jede technische Entwicklung als ein spezifischer Aspekt der sozialen Evolution zu verstehen. Dies wird mit der Konfrontation des Begriff des "Fortschritts" mit dem der "Modernisierung" gezeigt. Eine Gesellschaft versucht durch das Verwenden und das Beschränken von Technik über ihre eigene Evolution zu verfügen. Es erweist sich, daß diese Versuche zwar komplexer, aber nicht unbedingt erfolgreicher werden. Die einer jeden Evolution eigene Entwicklungsoffenheit kann nicht außer Kraft gesetzt werden, auch dann nicht, wenn eine Gesellschaft Evolutionstheorien entwickelt und reflexiv auf sich selbst anwendet. Anders als vormoderne Gesellschaften zeichnet sich die moderne Gesellschaft durch ihre hochgradig frei kontextualisierbare und damit riskante Technik aus. Kontextualisierungen und Entscheidungsnotwendigkeiten im Umgang mit moderner Technik bedingen Reflexivität. Technische Entwicklungen lassen Determinationen und Optionen in gleichem Maße wachsen. Komplex ist die soziale Seite von Technik, nicht die Kompliziertheit ihrer technischen Komponenten. Reflexive Technologiepolitik und Technikfolgenabschätzung sind gezwungen, die soziale Dynamik technischer Entwicklungen zu berücksichtigen
There are several means to analyse the intrinsic connection of technological development and social evolution in sociology today. The thesis examines technology and its development as part of social evolution from a system-theoretical point of view. Using this approach, terms like "technology" and "social evolution" are reformulated. "Technology" is a particular type of border of social systems, using the mode of causality in observing its environment; thus Technology is defined as the fixation of causal expectations. "Social evolution" is a social systems' structural change by the selection and reinforcement of variations, creating a singular history. In terms of sociology, any technological development is part of a wider developing social context. This is visualized by confronting the terms "progress" and "modernization"; both being concepts of sociology as well as of debates on technology and social development. By using technology, by giving way to innovation, and by limiting the use of technology, a given society tries to monitor and influence its own evolution. The thesis shows that these attempts become more complex, but not necessarily more effective. The fundamental properties of any evolution cannot be annulated --- the social evolution always remains unpredictable, even when evolutionary theories allow reflexive observations. In contrast to its predecessors the modern society constitutes a type of technology which is highly independent of any given social context. But this freedom is risky. Contextualizations and decision-makings imply a higher degree of reflexivity. In the case of technological development, both determinations and options increase at the same time. What is complex in technological development is its social, not its mere technical side. Any reflexive debate on technology has to reflect technology as a social issue
