Abstract:
Apart from very contaminated spatial areas, there are places with attractive and non-polluted environment, that are suitable for tourism and recreation. Such places are spa resorts, characterized by numerous and various natural elements having significant health and recreative functions (thermo-mineral springs, rare gases, favorable climatic conditions, rich vegetation, etc.), which attract attention of ample tourist demand. Serbia is welknown as a 'country of spa resorts', because of a great number of thermo-mineral springs, long tradition and their significance for tourism economy. Official statistical service keeps records of tourist flows only at 30 spa resorts (approximately), having participation at 95% of the total tourist trade in Serbia's spas. The topic of this paper is devoted to estimation of the present state and perspectives of spa tourism in Serbia. Special attention is focused on: analysis of resources for spa tourism, discussion of key factors for tourist valorization of Serbia's spas, investigation of structural features of spa tourism, comparison of Serbia's experiences in domain of spa tourism with contemporary trends in certain spa resorts in other European countries, and, finally, defining the most important tasks for spa tourism improvement.

Abstract:
Purpose. The identification of current, global trends in health tourism and their confrontation with the development potential of selected Polish spa enterprises. Method. The study was of exploratory nature and used the focus group interview method. Seventeen people participated in the discussion, including the management board representatives of spa enterprises and experts from the health tourism sector. Results. The research allowed to determine the development potential value of spa enterprises and its adaptation capacity to both worldwide competition and trends in the global tourist demand. The rivalry between spa enterprises is focused on the domestic market, neglecting the European and global competition. Only few spa resorts identify global trends in health tourism, perceiving them as a risk factor in enterprise management. Research and conclusions limitations. The study was not based on representative samples, as the number of spa enterprises presenting high potential and importance in tourist traffic management is small and covers 27 entities. The study also used secondary sources describing trends in health tourism, collected at different periods and from the perspective of various criteria, which limits generalisation of the research results. Practical implications. The adaptation of spa enterprises to global trends in health tourism requires collective actions undertaken by enterprises, municipalities and also the spa sector. Originality. The potential of spa enterprises is a relatively rarely discussed research problem, whereas trends in tourism, including health tourism, are much more frequently analysed. In turn, research on the adaptation capacity of spa enterprises to global trends remains poorly developed. Type of study. The article is of an overview of empirical nature. Global trends in health tourism are reviewed, and the presented empirical research confronts the development potential of spa enterprises with the possibilities of spa entities in responding to the identified trends.

Abstract:
The area of Southern Serbia is the most undeveloped tourist area and is marginalized in relation to the total tourist traffic of Serbia. With the purpose of health tourism development, special attention in this paper is focused on five spas and four mountain tourist destinations of South Serbia. The interaction of climatic elements is key for outdoor tourist activities, thus the potential of health tourism is presented through the results of the tourism climate comfort index (TCCI). According to TCCI values calculated for one climatological period 1991–2020, the spa tourist destinations of South Serbia are generally favorable during May, June and September. Four studied mountain destinations have favorable TCCI values generally during June, July and August. Spatio-temporal analysis utilizing ESRI ArcMap software showed that the most favorable conditions for health tourism development occur during spring and autumn for spas (May and June) and during summer for mountain destinations (July and August), which coincides with the ideal TCCI values. MatLab software through linear regression showed that in the period of 2010–2020, a negative tendency of tourists’ number in Vranjska banja spa and Niška banja spa is noticed, and a positive tendency for Prolom banja spa and Sijarinska banja spa. The paper also highlights the perspectives of other tourism forms of development in South Serbia.

Abstract:
Spa tourism, as one of the leading forms of tourism in Serbia, is a significant factor in local and regional socio-economic phenomena and processes. This paper deals with the impact of spa tourism on local demographic changes. The analysis includes nine most important spas in Serbia, in accordance with the achieved tourist traffic. The influence of tourism in different spas, in the last four decades, on dynamic changes in their population is taken into account. The paper analyzes the extent to which the change in the population of spa settlements have taken place differently from changes at the wider municipal and republic level. Furthermore, in order to fully understand the importance of tourism for demographic processes, a change in participation of the employed local population in the tourism sector was also analyzed. The results show that tourism has a significant impact on the population of spa resorts. In forty years that were observed, regardless of general depopulation trend in Serbia, in most of the analyzed spas there was an increase in the number of inhabitants, and the highest growth rates were recorded in periods of the most intensive tourism development. The increase in the number of inhabitants of spa settlements was accompanied by the increase in the economic activity of the local residents in the tourism sector.

The aim of this study is to evaluate potential of Cross-border region Bulgaria- Serbia for development of sustainability health (medical SPA and SPA tourism) destinations, using geomedical and social –economical assessment of tourism resources.More than 30 mineral springs (13 were selected) and 180 touristic objects have been studied –13 (were selected) (2018). There are good medico-biological conditions for the development of intensive medical SPA, Wellness and SPA tourism. The combination of free spring’s flow and specific climate conditions is a big advantage for the development of high specialized tourism destination as medical SPA.An algorithm is proposed for modeling a representative tourist destination in the field of health, medical SPA and wellness tourism. It is connected to the development of new tourist services - accessible and varied, aimed to a new target group of high price customer segment, focusing on local resources - scenic views, natural landmarks, specific landscape, local traditions and preserved environment. Destination management is related to its availability and development of alternative routes. The resilience of the health tourism destination is determined by its special social focus - creation and maintenance with a view to overcoming difficulties in the local economy and improving the quality of life of the local population also. For the success of those complex tourist product, it is necessary to manage different nonditional market sources, which implies the dominant role of digital marketing and application of virtual tourism tools to attract satisfied customers.

The paper represents an outline of the most important natural and anthropogenic tourist values on which the development of tourism of Jadar is based. It is pointed out to the most important deposits of thermomineral sources as the preconditions of the origin and development of spa centres. The largest economic effects are realized through development of health tourism in Banja Koviljaca which is the only one among spa centres that acquired the market affirmation as individual tourist motive. Banja Badanja has favorable conditions for development, still insufficiently affirmed and in shadow of far more famous Banja Koviljaca. The priorities of development of spa tourism are defined in the paper, and it is pointed to the significance of selective offer that depends on the conditions of successful organization of health spa, wellness-spa programmes and offered recreational contents.

Abstract:
Seasonality of tourist demand imposes a number of issues related to the destination?s carrying capacity and business activities of the individual service providers in tourism. As one indicator of seasonal fluctuation of tourist demand, the Gini index is identified in order to establish monthly concentration of tourists. In this study, the Gini index was calculated for four spa tourism destinations in Serbia (Vrnjacka Banja, Sokobanja, Niska Banja, and Prolom Banja), in order to establish variability in the seasonality. The research took into consideration the period 2010-2019. Research results indicate that Niska Banja Spa has the lowest values of the Gini index, while Vrnjacka Banja Spa and Sokobanja Spa have the highest values, whereby no values are higher that .45 (mostly between .30 and .39). Given that the theoretically lowest value of the Gini index is 0 (smallest seasonal concentration) and the highest is 1 (biggest concentration), the selected spas still do not have particularly high degree of seasonal concentration of tourists. Possibilities for reduction of tourist demand seasonality are pointed out, given its impact on tourism planning and its economic effects.

Abstract:
Tourism attractions and destinations has been facing tourists’ outflow for lots of years worldwide. Because of that, it is crucial to start fighting against this negative phenomenon, as this niche market segment is dependent on incoming clients. In this thesis, the focus is on wellness tourism with a case study aimed at spa industry in author’s residential country, Czech Republic. Thesis strives not to use standard marketing or management processes, but rather propose out of box solution, which allows gaining full spa experience. Since well-being is seen as one of actual drivers of consumer demand, an authentic spa concept called ‘destination spa’ is brought forward for solving current, local spa inability to be profitable. Key elements are nutrition, physical activity and mental balance. These are further examined and their real contribution is discussed. Within the case study, mix of these arguments is specifically applied to Darkov Spa, Karviná. In addition to that, data gathered from questionnaire enabled to use quantitative research methods to find out if proposed changes are favoured according to local taste. The results showed that suggested solution has a positive impact on local clientele, which will contribute towards increased visit rate. Due to this fact, research’s proposed idea is a convenient incentive for re-opening Darkov Spa.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to develop turnaround strategies for the Calitzdorp Spa Tourism Resort (herein after referred to as Calitzdorp Spa) to stop the performance decline and put it back on the road of recovery again. The development of turnaround strategies are dependent on establishing the cause of the performance decline and to enable management to plan effective and optimal strategies for the tourism resort focused on the recovery response. An analysis of various sources on strategic management models were undertaken to find a theoretical framework for the development of a strategic management model that could be applied to a tourism resort. The following model for the strategic management of a tourism resort was consequently developed and consists of the following main components: • Mission, objectives and stakeholders; • Strategic position; • Strategic choice; and • Strategic implementation. A second model for the Turnaround Process of a tourism resort was proposed to assist management in guiding the resort to recovery, consisting of two main phases, namely: • Turnaround situation; and the • Turnaround response. The research methodology followed included: • a literature survey to define the important concepts of tourism, resorts, strategic management and turnaround strategies; • a questionnaire survey to determine customer satisfaction at the Calitzdorp Spa; • telephone interviews to determine the marketing and positioning strategies of the Calitzdorp Spa; and • a focus group discussion session to determine the current situation at the resort and to plan future management strategies of the Calitzdorp Spa. Specific conclusions were made and specific actions recommended based on the results obtained.

Abstract:
This interpretivist study investigates the case for health/spa tourism as a driver for economic regeneration in Powys, Wales as a sustainable and competitive health/spa tourism destination to answer the following questions. What are the essential ingredients for a sustainable and competitive health/spa tourism destination? What is best practice in implementing major public-private partnership projects? Has Powys got the basic ingredients for a competitive health/spa tourism destination? What would a blueprint for health/spa tourism in Powys look like? What actions would be required of key stakeholders to achieve it? The thesis presents a critical review of literature on destination development, biomedical and bio-psychological models of illness and their relationship to traditional and modern spa practices and stakeholder theory to develop a theoretical framework for a sustainable and competitive health/spa tourism destination. The research adopts a case study methodology involving data collection through semi-structured and unstructured interviews, document and archival analysis, and direct observation. Data collection comprised three key phases. The first phase involved four French case studies - three - Vichy, La Bourboule, Châtel-Guyon - in the Auvergne and the fourth - Saint Malo in Brittany - to determine the applicability of the theoretical framework. The second phase of data collection involved a case study of Bath Spa to explore best practice in implementing major public-private partnerships for economic regeneration. The third phase provided an audit of selected resources in Powys against the framework to determine the feasibility of health/spa tourism as a focus for economic development. The thesis concludes that health/spa tourism would provide an appropriate development path for economic development in Powys and develops a set of recommendations from the best practice case studies into a blueprint for health/spa tourism in Powys and action plan identifying responsibilities for key public and private sector stakeholders in implementation of the blueprint.

Abstract:
This master thesis aims to provide a complex up-to-date overview of the spa industry in the Czech Republic and to analyze the position of Spa Luhačovice. Having shown the growing global importance of wellness tourism, the focus moves onto the spa industry which plays a major role in wellness. Nevertheless, the medical significance of spas can't be overlooked, especially in the Czech Republic where spas are known for the quality of medical care. While statistical reports from the Health Information and Statistics of the Czech Republic and from the Czech Statistical Office are being examined and analyzed in the country's perspective, Global Wellness Institute provides the majority of the global wellness and spa data. The thesis shows the current state of the industry in the country with its strengths and weaknesses. Moreover, the practical part is focused on Spa Luhačovice, the biggest spa in Moravia region. Various information and data are compared to overall development of the spa industry in the country. Finally, an interview with the spa representative is conducted to further clarify the findings of this thesis.

Abstract:
Development in the spa industry is going through difficulties caused by the world situation of tourism recovery. In days of compliance with anti-epidemic measures and social distance, the restoration of the spa offer will be based on innovative solutions for diversity in the spa services and products. This is the challenge of more enterprising and resourceful professionals in business to avoid the struggle for survival. One of their main fulcrums is reorientation towards non-price competition, which is based on the distinctive features of the product. Either it consists of innovative product design or mere market segmentation, product differentiation typically involves externalities across competitors, which clearly play an important role in firm's competitive incentives to invest in differentiation. The purpose of this report is through research and analysis of supply and development in spas, to prove the hypothesis that the diversity of spa products and services is fundamental to recovering in a highly competitive and further financially aggravated, current environment in tourism.

Abstract:
The goal of this article is to analyse and compare the tourist attractiveness of the cities in the Czech Republic from the foreign tourist point of view before the COVID-19 pandemic (in 2018) and during its peak (in 2020). To assess the tourist attractiveness of cities, two indicators were utilized in the study - the indicator of the intensity of foreign tourism (the ratio of overnight stays to the number of inhabitants) and the share of overnight stays of foreign tourists. The study embodies 191 cities with more than 5,000 inhabitants. Firstly, the results confirmed the patent dominance of Prague (69% of all overnight stays in 2018, the intensity 12.3), and the overall dominant position of 42 cities with urban conservation zone (92% share of overnight stays, the intensity 7.6) and above all of the spa towns (14.7% share of overnight stays, the intensity almost 14). Secondly, the results confirmed the expected consequences of the pandemic on the most tourist-attractive cities in 2020. The share of overnight stays fell to 24% compared to 2018. Likewise, the indicator of the intensity of foreign tourism fell from 4,0 to 1,0 with a milder impact on the most important spa towns (the share of overnight stays of foreign tourists slumped to 30.3%, the intensity dropped from 13.9 to 4.2).

Marić Stanković, Anđelina. "MATERIAL BASIS IN THE FUNCTION OF FUTURE TOURIST DEVELOPMENT OF THE PČINJA DISTRICT." In Tourism International Scientific Conference Vrnjačka Banja - TISC. FACULTY OF HOTEL MANAGEMENT AND TOURISM IN VRNJAČKA BANJA UNIVERSITY OF KRAGUJEVAC, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.52370/tisc22112am.

Abstract:
The material basis of a tourist destination is one of the most important factors of the tourist offer, which can affect the entire tourist traffic. The paper deals with the area of Pčinja district as an area with exceptional natural and anthropogenic tourist values. However, the Pčinja district is completely marginalized in terms of tourism and out of the mass tourist flows, which is a consequence of the insufficient and outdated material basis. Therefore, the paper analyzes the material basis of the Pčinja district in order to provide a basis for further strategic planning of the tourism development. Pčinja district has great potential for the development of several forms of tourism: sports - recreational, mountain, spa, hunting and fishing, excursions, and transit ones. However, without sufficient accommodation capacities, developed tourist infrastructure and suprastructure, any tourist development is not possible, regardless of the exceptional tourist values. If a new material base were built in the Pčinja district and the already existing tourist development of this area was reconstructed, it would take a positive course in the future.

Abstract:
The future of tourism is seen today as a key force in the process of globalization. When learning about culture, the origin of the destination is also very important, and the story of the destination is interesting if it has the history of a given culture. This paper generates short-term indicators of the development of the municipality of Vrnjačka Banja as a spa town in the Republic of Serbia with the largest market share. Apart from the fact that tourism is characterized by a highly global character and mass, it also creates knowledge about culture by connecting diferent parts of the world. The findings indicate that the existing tourist attractiveness does not exceed the potential possibilities, and in that sense it would be necessary to develop future tourist flows for the development and valorization of cultural heritage in Vrnjacka Banja. The results offer important implications for the implementation of tourism policy in the future, both for policy makers and for all stakeholders.

Peterson, Brian, J. Beeco, Sharolyn Anderson, and Damon Joyce. Exploring spatial patterns of overflights at Mount Rushmore National Memorial. National Park Service, June 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/nrr-2293663.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the spatial patterns of overflights at Mount Rushmore National Memorial (Mount Rushmore). Overflights were analyzed from August 15th, 2020 to May 15th, 2021 using Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) and radar data from L3Harris. The first phase of analysis focused on all overflights and found a high concentration of overflights fly above Mount Rushmore. The second phase of analysis focused on low-level overflights that fly below 9,000ft mean sea level (MSL), which showed that many low-level overflights fly in a ring-shaped pattern around Mount Rushmore. The third phase of analysis removed all overflights known to not be air tours. Point density analysis was conducted using waypoints segmented into 500ft above ground level (AGL) altitude intervals, which showed that the density of overflights varied by altitude interval and the 1,000-1,500ft AGL range had the highest density of overflights around and above Mount Rushmore. This altitude interval also had the highest number of waypoints. It was also determined that the aircraft owners who fly the most helicopter routes fly at mean and median altitudes less than 1,600ft AGL. This information can be used for planning and management purposes and this study serves as a resource for future research that intends to use more advanced analytics.

Abstract:
During a 2021 visit to the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon, the 55th Chief of Engineers and Commanding General of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USA CE), issued a challenge to elevate and open a bold new era for USACE R&D. Responding to that challenge, USACE leaders developed the USACE Research and Development Strategy and identified the Top 10 US ACE R&D Priorities to address the nation's toughest challenges through multi-disciplinary, collaborative and proactive approaches. These priorities span all USACE missions - Warfighter Support, Installations and Operational Environment Support, Interagency and International Services, Military Engineering and Operations, and Civil Works. USACE endorsed six Civil Works Strategic Focus Areas (SFAs) to address these unique challenges. SFAs represent capabilities required for USACE to achieve these Top 10 R&D priorities by innovating and developing solutions to problems impacting Civil Works mission delivery now and into the future. These SFAs, aligned with the Top Ten R&D Priorities, generate near- and long-term benefits for serving our communities, supporting and growing our economy, creating jobs, and enhancing broader societal impacts such as improved public health, national security, resiliency, recreation and tourism.
