The Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (NNSUACE) campus is located in Zapochainie, a historical area in Nizhny Novgorod, so the issues of revitalization of the historico-architectural environment and those concerning the methods of architectural design are interwoven in the text. The symbiotic relationship between education, science and practice used as a principal tool for the training of architects at NNSUACE made it possible to envision the evolution of the university campus. The article presents the projects proposed by professional architects and students in response to the need to meet both practical and ideological challenges – to transform the university campus into a viable public space.

Abstract:
In order to solve many new problems in the planning and design of university sports venues, in this study, the planning and design of university sports venues in China with the method of audience emotional experience are mainly studied. Based on the existing theories and practices of campus planning, in this study, the ideas of meeting the needs of university sports activities, shaping the campus environment and exploring the development of planning and design of university sports venue is put forward. At the same time, the theory and specific practices of the overall planning and design of university sports venues is also proposed. The original intention of the planning and design is to expect that the planning and design of university sports venues can be implemented and reflected in the construction, use and operation of the project. Therefore, it is helpful to build a harmonious and complete space environment on the campus, to integrate the campus into the urban environment organically, and to achieve the goal of sustainable development of university sports venues through resource sharing.

Abstract:
This paper aims to present and discuss phases of planning and designing campuses for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The authors argue that creating a taxonomy to control an environment conducive to learning is of the same order of importance as that for education as depicted by Bloom, given the size, financial burden, and influence on learning outcomes. A specific model is proposed for the taxonomy of planning campuses for HEIs with four ordered phases: educational programming, spaces programming, master planning, and detailed design. The researchers followed four methodologies to support the proposed model: A literature review to seek relevant knowledge and terms used in previous studies; a descriptive discussion of the proposed campus planning and design taxonomy model; a survey of experts in educational and campus planning to examine the proposed phases; and, a case study of the campus of Kingdom University in Bahrain where the phases of taxonomy were implemented. This latter case study further exhibits how the executed campus planning process is developed in adherence with state-of-the-art educational demands and trends. This paper is concluded with guidelines of HEIs campus planning as illustrated a diagram for the proposed model of taxonomy showing the process and illustrating the model domains, together with its phases and planning process considerations. The model also analyses the relationship between the domains that are ordered according to the process flow starting with educational programming up to the detailed design phases.

The landscape is important in spatial development for campus space. Fundamentally, planting composition generates a character of the outdoor space. It could offer an enormous influence on visual quality, student performance and quality of life. This paper investigated the preferences and usage of outdoor campus space provided by universities during students’ leisure time. The data were collected through structured interviews at Research Universities in Malaysia. The results showed a relationship between preferences for landscape setting and utilisation index. Abstract:
<p>Architecture in permanent transformation is the starting point of this article, focused on the interaction between material and social aspects of a case study on modern Mexican housing, observing the building’s life in relation to its inhabitants. The Multifamily Apartment Building for Teachers (Multifamiliar para maestros), a faculty housing building at the UNAM campus, is a mid-twentieth-century experimental housing project, developed at the beginning of Mexico City´s densification. Today it is registered in UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. The case study sheds some important insights into the transformations of a spatial modern utopia facing inhabitants' needs. Numerous differences were detected between the original idea behind the building’s architecture and the reality of its users today, revealing not only the ambiguous nature of the building but also problems derived from the country’s accelerated modernization. The results show contrasting approaches of the intermediate space between the building’s conception, and the constant process of becoming a home, where the scope of its habitability is negotiated. </p>

Boundary space amelioration (BSA) aims to eliminate barriers between two sites and activate the grey residual space in-between. School campus in Taiwan is often surrounded by walls, which blocks its connection to communities and often creates security concerns. School campus has become the most popular target for BSA, which tries to turn it into a functional and aesthetic space. This study intends to explore the influences of campus BSA within a community, especially its relationships with neighborhood safety, perceived change and place attachment. The result shows that the improvement of boundary environment has a significant influence on all three perceptions. The Docklands campus of the University of East London (UEL) is located in one of the fastest-growing regeneration areas in the UK. It is also one of the most dramatic and visually stunning new libraries in the sector. Good communication with everyone involved in the planning and design process was crucial to the success of the building. The design, the engineering, the widely varying subject areas supported, the dynamics of the library staff and the quality of the external bodies involved, all contribute to the whole. For art and architecture students the large clean space has meant that they are once again able to use the library in a creative way.

Planning and design of university campuses is as important as the instructional philosophy of universities for determining academic and social development of university students. However, mainstream university campuses have often been designed with typical “normal” or “abled” users in mind and have neglected the needs of students with physical, sensory, and developmental disabilities. Universal design perspective with its equality, social inclusion and social justice agenda can be helpful in giving insights for inclusive educational environments. This study presents a research based design process conducted at a university campus in Turkey to create an inclusive educational environment for the students with disabilities, and to improve their participation in campus' academic and social life. For this purpose, existing campus spaces were evaluated for their inclusiveness both objectively through a checklist and subjectively through participatory workshops and meetings. The findings from both studies were used to identify the needs of the users with disabilities in the campus' settings. The results obtained from these studies were used to inform the implementations, and a holistic plan for creating an inclusive campus environment was developed. This study provides the implications for architectural and urban needs of users with physical, sensory, and vision disabilities or restraints in campus environments, develops methodology for future studies with similar context, and informs about the challenges and opportunities present in the process of creating inclusive university campus environments. .

This thesis draws on observations of user behaviors in Kansas State University’s North Quadrangle to propose a plaza design for a site within the quadrangle adjacent to Cardwell Hall. As a practical method for conducting environment-behavior research, the thesis gathered observations of moving and resting behaviors to understand the North Quadrangle’s current usages. The observations of moving behaviors provided evidence for identifying potential spaces within the North Quadrangle where a plaza might be designed and built. In turn, observations of resting behaviors provided an understanding of sitting and standing behaviors in the North Quadrangle plaza. In terms of research related to plaza behavior and design, the most significant work drawn upon was William Whyte’s The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces (Whyte, 1980). According to Whyte, a plaza is sociable if large numbers of people are drawn to it informally in the course of their everyday activities and movements. In this regard, the design aim of the proposed plaza is to promote sociability within the North Quadrangle by attracting pedestrians traversing the North Quadrangle’s busiest pathways and thus drawing them into the plaza. More specifically, to promote plaza sociability, the design makes use of the three most important plaza-design factors identified by Whyte: (1) location; (2) street-plaza relationship; and (3) seating. In other words, first, the plaza should be located near large pools of potential users; second, the plaza should be designed as an extension of the most heavily trafficked pathways; and third, the plaza should incorporate sitting opportunities for users via seating that is physically and socially comfortable. The behavioral observations and guidance provided by the literature review have been used to generate twelve design guidelines on which the proposed plaza design is based. The presentation of final plaza design incorporates explanations of these twelve guidelines followed by illustrated design schemes.

Millions of people live and work on college campuses everyday. The environment they dwell and interact with is essential to their quality of life and health. There is no doubt that the campus landscape is of great importance to millions of students, faculty, and staff on campus. Surrounding communities are also significantly affected by college campuses as colleges often provide education and social events, as well as economic activities. However, in the past, the design of campus landscape spaces have been overlooked or treated as a leftover of buildings, even though campus landscape spaces are more than the â facesâ of colleges.

With more and more colleges and universities expanding and redesigning their landscape spaces, the design of campus landscape space has gained more recognition in the recent twenty years. One of the significant changes in the design process is the taking of usersâ needs/concerns into account. This change is influenced by a community-based design concept found in Active Living and Public Spaces design. While Active Living and Public Spaces design emphasizes the importance of user involvement and different techniques in soliciting user input, there is a missing link between user input and the design program elements.

In this thesis, I examine the past practice of campus landscape space design and propose using Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to fill in this missing link. QFD has been used in various industries, including service and manufacturing, for years. It emphasizes the importance of taking usersâ needs, called Voice of Customers (VOC), into the design process. The employment of different matrices to capture the relationship between VOC and subsequent design and quality characteristics makes QFD a unique framework suitable to fill the gap in the current design process.

A case study of campus landscape space design is conducted to examine the applicability of QFD in campus landscape space design, including the advantages, the obstacles, and the unique condition of using QFD in landscape design. The study yields several insights on the application of QFD in campus landscape space design, which are applicable in other landscape design projects.

University campus has a profound impact on the growth and development of college students. In this study, we use Photovoice method to explore how female freshmen perceive and build up the sentimental ties with the campus. Participants (n=54; aged 18-19 years) were asked to photograph and discuss perceived positive/negative places on Tongji University campus (Shanghai). In the process of analysis, thematic and content analysis was conducted by natural language processing software, the correlation of key words were examined by Rost Content Mining. The study shows that place attachment comes from the fulfilment of activity demand, which is not only related to the place function itself, but also caused by people’s place cognition and emotional experience. Architecture, roads(and its affiliated facilities), greening and landscape, public space, and atmosphere are particularly important for creating place cognition and emotional experience. Meanwhile, Photovoice, as an emerging participatory research method, shows great potential in the place-making, as it significantly improved the students’ participation, critical thinking and constructive suggestions in this campus study

Educational settings are considered some of the most mentally depleting environments since they require high concentration, creativity, and efficiency. University campuses clearly portray these environments. Therefore, there is an immense need for campus settings where users can take outdoor breaks to restore and redirect their attention. Well-designed outdoor landscapes can have restorative effects on users, and in turn increase their concentration and overall productivity. This interdisciplinary research explores key literature on restorative concepts and visual preferences from the field of environmental psychology. It also examines the restorative campus landscape character from an urban design perspective. However, there are no coherent frameworks that correlate the three dimensions: restorative landscape design concepts, visual landscape preferences, and appropriate campus planning strategies. Therefore, the research summarizes the key literature findings, and merges the three parameters into a comprehensive assessment tool designed explicitly for university campuses. The paper concludes with a proposed tool (framework) that can provide guidelines to help landscape architects and planners to design restorative campus open spaces and recognize their insufficiencies.

Abstract:
This research project aims at the regeneration of European universities created in the 60s and 70s through a systematic, circular, open and integrated process of their cultural heritage. At present, these campuses represent both a tangible and intangible heritage (architecture, urban planning, landscape… but also pedagogy, specialization areas, educational policies) whose adaptation to contemporaneity involves issues related to environmental sustainability, to the institution organizational capacities, and to its social implication. Specifically, this proposal aims at lines of action that would offer strategies such as the renewal of infrastructures and services and the adaptive reuse of the built heritage (space recycling, sustainability), the updating of the physical teaching spaces to the new teaching methodologies (European Higher Education Area), and the campus social consideration as a comfortable, conflict-safe and cultural-integrated area. Beyond the simple conservation, restoration and physical rehabilitation of a set of buildings and a university fabric, this project has the added value of an integrated or interdisciplinary action model that seeks four aspects of innovation: the organizational, the formative, the technological and social. This research proposes to ensure a longer life cycle for the heritage through its participation as a resource in the dynamics of regeneration of the universities.

The building-street interface lies on the edge between two distinctively different spatial domains, the house and the street, and provides a buffer which may be adjusted to aid the transition from private to public territory. The structure of the space impacts both domains: it provides a fit transition from the private dwelling to the public territory, creates a space for probabilistic encounters between inhabitants and strangers, and maintains the liveability of the public street. The aim of this paper is threefold: Firstly, we recognise morphological differences in the structure of the interfaces and the way the transition from private to public territory was envisioned and designed in different societal periods. Secondly, we study incremental changes to the interface, representing individual adjustments to the private-public boundary, in order to recognize common types of adaptations to the existing structure of the interface. The history of changes to each individual building and building-street interface was traced by analysing planning applications and enforcements publicly provided by the city council. Lastly, we compare the capacity of each building-street interface to accommodate incremental change to the public-private transition. We argue that studying the incremental change of the interface and the capacity of each interface to accommodate micro-scale transformations aids in the understanding of the complex social relationship between an individual and a collective in the urban environment. Resumen: Un recorrido por la producción de Le Corbusier evidencia la insistente presencia del cuadrado como base de las composiciones en diversos campos (urbanismo, arquitectura, pintura, mobiliario…) y en diferentes formatos (en planta, alzado y sección, o como marco, módulo y cuadrícula). La presente comunicación realiza un análisis formal (gráfico y simbólico) de sus proyectos y obras, rastreando los modos en que se utiliza el cuadrado permaneciendo en el tiempo como una constante recurrente. Para ello se recorren cuatro áreas temáticas que descienden en escala y en dimensiones: 1) capitolios, 2) museos, 3) pabellones y 4) casas, estudiando una serie de ejemplos en cada área a partir de los planos de la Fundación Le Corbusier, generando discursos que reconstruyen un hilo del tiempo en la evolución de los procesos compositivos. De este modo, se desgrana el empleo del cuadrado, en correspondencia con las áreas de estudio, como: 1º) perímetro de la plaza pública donde insertar las arquitecturas representativas, 2º) marco o caja-fuerte donde encerrar los tesoros artísticos (o sagrados), 3º) volumen cúbico abierto y desmontable y 4º) caja definida por la retícula de la estructura. El cuadrado es siempre un medio y no un fin. Persiste un intento de sugerir algunos de los orígenes en su formación clasicista, sus viajes y sus pinturas. Abstract: A tour through the production of Le Corbusier shows the insistent presence of the square as a basis of compositions in various fields (urban planning, architecture, painting, furniture...) and in different formats (in floor, elevation and profile, or as a theme, module and grid). This communication makes a formal analysis (graphic and symbolic) of its projects and works tracing the different ways to use the square that remains as a recurring constant. We can do it through four thematic areas descending in scale and dimensions: 1) capitols, 2) museums, 3) pavilions and 4) houses, studying a series of examples in each area based on the drawings of the Foundation Le Corbusier, generating speeches that reconstruct a thread of the time in the evolution of the compositional process. In correspondence with the four themes of study, we can discovery the employment of the square as different instruments. First: the square as the perimeter of the public space where to insert the representative architectures. Second: as a frame or safety deposit box where to enclose treasures artistic (or Holy). Third: as a cubic volume open and detachable. Fourth: as box defined by the grid of the structure. The square is always a means and not an end.
