The main concern of this licentiate thesis is to discuss how built space is used for communication in the manufacturing industry, from a visual communication perspective. The thesis presents and develops the notion of 'communication space' and presents a model to describe the relation between different factors in the communication space. In a multiple case study, six different cases from the manufacturing industry are described and analyzed to highlight how built space is used for communication in a lean production context. Research results on how built spaces such as improvement places, meeting places and a development workshop affect improvement processes and communication are presented. What the studied improvement areas, meeting places and workshop can be said to communicate about the improvement processes is analyzed. The research results show that the built spaces in manufacturing industry are used for communication on two levels, both as places for interaction between employees and as a part of a communication process. The study also shows a relation between architecture from a specific time and the relation to the improvement work in the industrial context. How the results can be used to facilitate communication in the built spaces used for improvement processes in manufacturing industry is suggested in the thesis.<br>DeViP and Kaikaku

To respond to the research question, “by what processes do new industries emerge?”, the author identified different models of innovation development and industry emergence. Relevant streams of literature included economics, innovation, sociology, economic sociology, and institution theory. A functional goal innovation development theory, referred to as the accumulation model, states that many organizations, from both the public- and private-sectors, collect and accumulate resources in three major social functions. Previous research defined the model state-of-the-art at a high level of abstraction, identifying the three main components (industry infrastructure elements), depicted as separate boxes with arrows between them. This research uses grounded theory extension to identify microscopic processes, delving within and between the three macroscopic infrastructure elements. The industry context of this research was the emerging human suborbital space transportation (“space tourism”) industry. Data came from secondary sources, archival data, and primary sources. This research collected more than 8,400 pieces of secondary and archival data from news aggregator web sites, distilled them into approximately 600 significant events, and categorized them within the accumulation model framework’s three main components: Institutional Arrangements, Resource Endowments, and Proprietary Functions. Industry structure and disruptive innovation studies provided additional analytical perspectives. Primary data, collected via 40 interviews of industry members, filled in and validated data gaps. The combined analyses resulted in a deeper understanding of the industry emergence process. Observations of the sequence of events, and of linkages between events and actors, allowed the author to propose a set of processes, describing how the accumulated industry resources resulted in industry emergence. Description of these processes required modifications to the original framework. Furthermore, this research analyzed a high-profile prize event that initiated the industry emergence, to propose a supplemental set of processes, describing how prizes influence industry emergence. The current research proposes that institutional activities contribute primarily to the accumulation of sociopolitical legitimacy, and resource endowment activities contribute primarily to cognitive legitimacy. Both forms of legitimacy are a significant moderator of interactions between the three infrastructure elements. Furthermore, prizes positively contribute to sociopolitical legitimacy, positively moderate the creation of cognitive legitimacy, and positively moderate many steps in the business development cycle. The proposed processes identify the steps of legitimacy creation and industry emergence. This research provides new insights into the industry emergence and evolution processes, for entrepreneurs, managers, policy-makers, and for developing countries on the African continent.

The New Space industry is a novel branch of the space industry focusing on innovation and commercialization. It experiences very swift growth, although only a fraction of this growth has taken place in Sweden. In order to change this, policymakers are investing funds and efforts into developing the Swedish New Space industry, including the Kvarken Space Center project, aimed at developing the Northern Swedish New Space industry. Here, we see public support in developing a high-tech innovation ecosystem in a peripheral area. This is a topic offering multiple research streams on the most efficient development methods, two of which juxtapose the knowledge ecosystem and intercompany collaborations respectively. With that in mind, we formulated the following research question: How are collaborations and the knowledge ecosystem used to source knowledge for the innovation process? To approach to the subject, we gathered literature on innovation systems and ecosystems in order to analyze the importance of the knowledge ecosystem and the various shapes the industry can assume. This information is linked to theory on knowledge types and sourcing methods considering tacit and codified knowledge, which through different constellations form different needs of knowledge sources. Our empirical approach investigated how the companies used different knowledge sources, namely collaborations, the knowledge ecosystem, and other sources, including networks, monitoring, and mobility. Thereafter, we considered the effects of outstanding factors, including funding and the peripheral region, on knowledge input in innovation. We identified that companies in the upstream industry node, i.e. those related to launch activities and vehicles, and companies in the downstream node, i.e. those extracting data from space, both use engineering knowledge. Engineering knowledge requires both tacit and some codified knowledge, suggesting similar knowledge inputs for both nodes. However, different node traits lead to different inputs. Upstream companies see low degrees of knowledge transfer, especially from the knowledge ecosystem and from collaborations due to NDAs and intellectual property regards, and tacit knowledge input from external sources is particularly lacking. Downstream actors see few constraints to using the investigated knowledge sources, although collaborations saw difficulties due to complexities in structuring them. However, many unilateral complementarities are seen from the knowledge ecosystem, leading to higher knowledge input particularly from networks, while also boosting collaborations to some extent. This was also partly observed in upstream companies. Thus, the knowledge ecosystem sees significant use, although much is indirect, while collaborations see less use. Our main findings are that policymakers and the knowledge ecosystem should focus more on sources of tacit knowledge, such as students, while investing in network-boosting activities as industry events. Companies, especially upstream ones, should utilize collaborations more. Upstream companies should also utilize the local knowledge ecosystem more, as the rights to intellectual property produced by private actors in universities belong to the producer. Regarding future research, we warrant studies on knowledge sourcing in New Space companies and other knowledge sources, such as networks as a compensatory knowledge source.

Nearly fifty years have passed since the beginning of the space age, but international lawmakers have yet to determine where airspace ends and outer space begins. This paper examines the need to settle the boundary dispute, specifically taking into account the effect it has on emerging technologies and the 'new' space industry.<br>The opening chapter examines the fundamental changes that have occurred since the beginning of the space age, both in terms of the technology and the space exploration infrastructure. The background of the delimitation question is then provided, followed by a discussion of the legal significance of the boundary issue. The final chapter analyzes the spatialist and functionalist approaches to the delimitation of outer space, looking at the pros and cons of each position.

Thesis (S.M.M.O.T.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, Management of Technology Program, 2001.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaves 202-221).<br>Responsive, affordable space transportation, using reusable launch vehicles (RL Vs) to place payloads into orbit at a fraction of today's exorbitant costs, will become a reality within the next few decades. As the railroads unlocked the American West, and as the modern airplane shrank our planet, reusable launch vehicles will open space with vast scientific, commercial, humanistic, and military payoffs. The large amount of financing required for commercial RLV development coupled with significant market risk, the employment of a myriad of high-risk technologies, the lack of Federal assistance beyond early stage RLV technology development, and numerous other barriers to entry have greatly undermined successful RLV system development. Historically, the U.S. government has stepped into the fray of past transportation technology and infrastructure development with investments and funding incentives. Over the past two decades, however, the U.S. government's record in RLV development has been dismal, characterized by repeated attempts to leapfrog critical technologies rather than applying a pragmatic, stepping stone, "build a little, fly a little" approach that was so successfully utilized in experimental aircraft development a few decades before. Despite a number of failed launch vehicle development endeavors since the development of the Space Shuttle, a wave of private entrepreneurial firms are currently attempting to develop innovative reusable launch vehicle concepts independently of the U.S. government. Originally bolstered by a late 1990s bullish low Earth orbit (LEO) market, the success of these endeavors may be destined to echo that of an analogous wave of failed entrepreneurial expendable launch vehicle development efforts from a few years before, especially now that the LEO market has declined so drastically. This thesis addresses several aspects of the development of reusable launch vehicles. Demand for space launch is examined, with attention on commercial satellite trends and emerging markets. Space launch supply is assessed, with discussion of the current situation of launch vehicle over-capacity and high global competition. Several reusable and expendable launch vehicle development programs are examined, including the efforts of both small entrepreneurial ventures and large national programs. An introduction to barriers to entrepreneurial RLV development is also presented, focusing on legitimacy issues and the problems of financing such high-risk ventures. The aim of the thesis is to provide the mission requirements for the VEGA Transportation System(VTS), the equivalent of Phase 0 of a space project. The decrease in sizes and masses of the satellites opened the opportunity for the light capability VEGA launchers to contribute and reshape the European space value chain. VTS is envisaged to be an extension of the services offered by the VEGA launcher family, by providing solutions and services of space transportation and orbital exploitation. The elaboration of this thesis followed closely a methodology for defining complex space missions discussed by authors in “Methodology for requirements definition of complex space missions and system” and “Reusable space tug concept and mission”, which emphasizes the need of both, the Functional Analysis and Concept of Operation as fundamental activities to assess and derive the mission requirements. The results section reports a thorough description of the results obtained in the quest of identifying and characterizing new missions requirements for VTS. Specifically, missions for Releasing payload(s) to its/their final position and missions for Providing charter for In-Orbit Verification / In-Orbit Experimentation / In-Orbit Demonstration were exemplified. The mission requirements are summarized at the end of the section. A parallel between the findings and the current space trends is drawn in the Discussion, with details about the target market and how VTS could reshape it. A short discussion on how the entire portfolio of missions are amalgamated, in such a way that as few systems as possible can handle these missions is also provided. Lastly, a comparison between the work performed within the AVIO project and a sounding rocket project is given, providing thoughts about the lessons learned from both of them. Eventually, the conclusions are drawn based on the missions presented throughout thethesis and explains how the entire portfolio of missions will be further analyzed and more requirements will be deployed for the refinement of the entire VTS.<br>Syftet med denna rapport är att formulera uppdragskraven, motsvarande fas noll i ett rymdprojekt, för VEGA Transportation System (VTS). Minskningen i storlek och massa hos satelliter har öppnat upp för att VEGA, som är byggd för små nyttolaster, kan bidra till och utöka den europeiska uppskjutningskapaciteten och tjänsterna för olika rymdtransporter. Denna studien följer till stora delar metoderna som presenteras i “Methodology for requirements definition of complex space missions and system” samt “Reusable space tug concept and mission”. I dessa publikationer understryks behovet av både funktionell analys samt operationskonceptet som fundamentala aktiviteter för att bedöma och formulera uppdragskraven. Resultatavsnittet går igenom de framtagna uppdragkraven med de ovan nämnda metoderna. I diskussionsavsnittet analyseras nuvarande trender inom rymdsektorn och hur VTS kan vara med och forma utvecklingen samt den tänkta marknaden för systemet. Det diskuteras hur flera rymduppdrag kan slås ihop så att så få system som möligt kan hantera dessa uppdrag. Slutligen görs en jämförelse mellan arbetet inom AVIO-projektet med ett REXUS-sondraketprojekt, med tankar och lärdomar från båda projekten. Slutsatser dras utifrån portföljen av uppdrag som tagits fram för VTS i studien. VTS kommer framöver att fortsätta analyseras samt motiveras med flera argument för dess förbättring.

As the verification & validation activities (VAs) of these software systems account for more than 50% of the development effort and the industry is faced with political and market pressure to deliver software faster and cheaper, new ways need to be established to reduce this verification & validation effort. In a research project together with RUAG Aerospace Sweden AB and the Swedish Space Corporation, the Blekinge Tekniska Högskola is trying to find out how to optimize the VAs with respect to effectiveness and efficiency. The goal of this thesis is therefore to develop a coherent framework for the management and optimization of verification & validation activities (VAMOS) and is evaluated at the RUAG Aerospace Sweden AB in Göteborg.

The purpose of this thesis is to explore several issues regarding the industrial geography of the North American city between 1850 and 1918, using Montreal as a case-study. The two dominant locational theories (Weberian and transactional) are critiqued and three problems are identified: their reliance on simplistic conceptions of industrial organization; their inability to take account of cycles of investment; and their neglect of the social construction of the built environment. A reformulation of urban industrial geography is presented which stresses the diversity of productive strategies open to industries; the relationship of these strategies to rhythms of changes to technology, the labour process, and the organizational structure of firms; and the actions of local growth machines in the making of industrial space. These claims are developed through an empirical examination of Montreal. Using the municipal tax assessment rolls a description of the location of Montreal's manufacturing firms in 1861 and 1890 establishes the context for a discussion of the key dynamics of the city's industrial geography through histories of selected industries (clothing, metal, cotton, and baking) and industrial districts (Saint-Ann and Saint-Henri).

This thesis examines the use of future narratives in high-risk industries, using the case study of the United Kingdom (UK) space industry. Situated at the intersection of prior scholarly work on both futures and narratives, future narratives are stories, roadmaps or predictions that are orientated towards a long-term perspective – years or decades ahead – and seek to present a coherent outcome for a given technology. Drawing on a textual analysis of in-depth interviews conducted with actors in the public and private space sectors in the UK, this thesis proposes a three-part typology for understanding the forms of future narratives generated to promote, defend and further the cause of such technologies. The first is the finite future. This is a promissory narrative which has a clear goal, a clear end-point, and a number of systems for keeping those within a high-risk development programme tied to the success or failure of that programme. The second is the normalized future – this serves as a stark contrast to the promises of cutting-edge technology, innovation and exotic science from the earlier days of space technology, and positions space as a mundane and normalized technological industry that is merely ‘a part of everyday life’. The third is the adaptive future which consists of qualifications and other forms of credibility, and projects the viability and trustworthiness of a technology indefinitely into the future. By studying these narratives the thesis contributes to a body of work on high-risk technologies and the industries that produce them. The findings from the project lead me to argue that future narratives of this sort are crucial to understanding contemporary high-risk technologies; that the temporal dimension of such development programmes is of critical analytical importance; and that future narratives point the way towards subsequent research for understanding this particular form of technological development.

Additive manufacturing (AM), or 3D printing, is a collection of production processes that has received a good deal of attention in recent years from different industries. Features such as mass production of customised products, design freedom, part consolidation and cost efficient low volume production drive the development of, and the interest in, these technologies. One industry that could potentially benefit from AM with metal materials is the space industry, an industry that has become a more competitive environment with established actors being challenged by new commercial initiatives. To be competitive in these new market conditions, the need for innovation and cost awareness has increased. Efficiency in product development and manufacturing is required, and AM is promising from these perspectives. However, the maturity of the AM processes is still at a level that requires cautious implementation in direct applications. Variation in manufacturing outcome and sensitivity to part geometry impact material properties and part behaviour. Since the space industry is characterised by the use of products in harsh environments with no room for failure, strict requirements govern product development, manufacturing and use of space applications. Parts have to be shown to meet specific quality control requirements, which is done through a qualification process. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate challenges with development and qualification of AM parts for space applications, and their impact on the product development process. Specifically, the challenges with powder bed fusion (PBF) processes have been in focus in this thesis. Four studies have been carried out within this research project. The first was a literature review coupled with visits to AM actors in Sweden that set the direction for the research. The second study consisted of a series of interviews at one company in the space industry to understand the expectations for AM and its implications on product development. This was coupled with a third study consisting of a workshop series with three companies in the space industry. The fourth study was an in-depth look at one company to map the qualification of manufacturing processes in the space industry, and the challenges that are seen for AM. The results from these studies show that engineers in the space industry work under conditions that are not always under their control, and which impact how they are able to be innovative and to introduce new manufacturing technologies, such as AM. The importance of product quality also tends to lead engineers into relying on previous designs meaning incremental, rather than radical, development of products is therefore typical. Furthermore, the qualification of manufacturing processes relies on previous experience which means that introducing new processes, such as AM, is difficult due to the lack of knowledge of their behaviour. Two major challenges with the qualification of critical AM parts for space applications have been identified: (i) the requirement to show that critical parts are damage tolerant which is challenging due to the lack of understanding of AM inherent defects, and (ii) the difficulty of testing parts in representative environments. This implies that the whole product development process is impacted in the development and qualification of AM parts; early, as well as later stages. To be able to utilise the design freedom that comes with AM, the capabilities of the chosen AM process has to be considered. Therefore, Design for Manufacturing (DfM) has evolved into Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM). While DfAM is important for the part design, this thesis also discusses its importance in the qualification of AM parts. In addition, the role of systems engineering in the development and qualification of AM parts for space applications is highlighted.

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.<br>The focus of this paper is on how to energize the space industrial base as directed by the National Security Space Strategy of 2011. Using a case study of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS), an analysis of how to enable the commercial space transportation industry will be discussed. A look at previous government ventures that have been privatized, along with the history of commercial space transportation, sets the stage for evaluating the future of the industry. An in-depth analysis of FAA and NASA regulation was done to compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of each and provide insight on the future regulation of the industry. Past launches, government funding, and future plans are all studied to determine a forecast for demand. Recommendations are provided to the MARS on how to enable their commercial space transportation industry and conclusions are drawn on the importance of the commercial space transportation industry to National Security.

The technological development has enabled structural changes in the real estate market and created a growing concept of space-as-a-service. Space-as-a-service has emerged from the concepts of sharing economy, digitalization and servitization to meet the demand for flexible solutions on the commercial real estate market. The idea of space-as-a-service is to offer simple and flexible access to spaces as well as providing extra services for tenants to create added value. From a sustainable perspective the intention is to decrease the need for new construction and take advantage of the existing building stock to meet demand for space. Most of the previous research on the space-as-a-service concept focus on coworking and sharing spaces but not as much on the broader concept and its rampaging on the real estate market. This study aims to investigate if the concept of space-as-a-service is disruptive for the real estate industry and how real estate owners approach this development. A qualitative research method was applied, using both structured and semi-structured interviews with real estate owners with property holdings in Sweden to get more in-depth information and understanding of the growing concept of space-as-a-service. The Theory of Disruptive Innovations was used as a framework for investigating disruptive signs of space-as-a-service. The driving motives behind space-as-a-service are concluded to mainly derive from an observed demand for freedom of effort and flexibility in the real estate owners´ offerings. We can see a new complex competitive environment, where the real estate industry's service goes from selling “space” to offer a concept. This puts new requirements on real estate owners to justify for more than the location of their premises, in order to keep their competitive position. What positions the real estate owners take in this new landscape differentiates. The attitudes towards space-as-a-service are generally positive, but the perceived risks are explicitly present. External actors and regulations also counteract the development. Thresholds and attitudes collide, making it clear that a change in mindset is needed. However, from the results of our study we can conclude that the concept of space-as-a-service fulfills the characteristics of a disruptive innovation, indicating that this evolution will be disruptive for the real estate industry.<br>Den tekniska utvecklingen av teknik har möjliggjort strukturella förändringar på fastighetsmarknaden, där man går från att sälja yta till att erbjuda ett koncept. Ur ett hållbarhetsperspektiv är avsikten att minska behovet av nyproduktion och dra nytta av det befintliga fastighetsbeståndet för att möta efterfrågan på lokaler. Tidigare forskning relaterat till yta-som-tjänst fokuserar främst på coworking och delade ytor, men det saknas studier på konceptet ur ett bredare perspektiv och dess framfart på fastighetsmarknaden. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka om konceptet yta-som-tjänst är disruptivt för fastighetsbranschen samt fastighetsägares inställning till denna utveckling. Resultatinsamlingen genomfördes med en kvalitativ forskningsmetod, där både strukturerade och semistrukturerade intervjuer med kommersiella fastighetsägare i Sverige användes för att få en djupare förståelse för konceptet yta-som-tjänst. Studiens akademiska förankring grundar sig i teorin om Disruptiva Innovationer som används för att granska disruptiva tecken av konceptet yta-som-tjänst. Vi kan dra slutsatsen att drivkrafterna bakom konceptet yta-som-tjänst främst är ökad efterfrågan på besvärsfrihet och flexibilitet i tjänsterna som idag erbjuds av fastighetsägare. Detta skapar en ny och komplex konkurrensmiljö som sätter nya krav på fastighetsägare, de blir tvungna att rättfärdiga för mer än bara läget på en lokal för att behålla sin konkurrenskraft. Vilka roller som fastighetsägare väljer att ta i detta nya landskap varierar sig. Attityderna mot yta-som-tjänst är generellt positiva, men det upplevs finnas flera risker som tillsammans med externa aktörer och regelverk motverkar utvecklingen. Resultatet visar att attityder och trösklar i utvecklingen motsäger varandra och att ett tankeskifte är nödvändigt i flera olika led. Resultatet av vår studie visar att konceptet yta-som-tjänst uppfyller karaktärsdragen för en disruptiv innovation och förväntas expandera till en bredare marknad framöver.

This thesis brings statistical analyses techniques to bear on data derived from an extensive database of satellite launches and on-orbit anomalies and failures. The data collected is analyzed from two different perspectives and addresses, in two separate studies, two research objectives.
The first study proposes to identify trends and cyclical patterns in the space industry, and to forecast the volume of launches for the next few years. Satellites have been rightfully described as the lifeblood of the entire space industry and the number of satellites ordered or launched per year is an important defining metric of the industry's level of activity. The structure of the space industry, its financial health and its workforce retention and development is dependent on the volume of satellites contracted. As such, trends and variability in this volume have significant strategic impact on the space industry. Over the past 40+ years, hundreds of satellites have been launched every year. Thus, an important data set is available for time series analysis and identification of trends and cycles in the various markets of the space industry. For the purpose of this first study, we collected data for over 6,000 satellites launched since 1960 on a yearly basis. We separated the satellites into three broad segments: 1) defense and intelligence satellites, 2) science satellites, and 3) commercial satellites. Several techniques are available for the analysis of time series data, both in the time domain and in the frequency domain. In this first study, we conducted spectral analysis of the time series for each of the three satellite populations and identified cycles contained in the data. In addition, once harmonic models were derived and fitted to the data, we built forecasting models of satellite launch volumes in the different market segments for the next few years. The potential implications of the results are discussed as a number of strategic matters for the space industry are contingent on the predictions or forecast of the volume of satellites contracted (the example of the U.S. auto industry is a solemn reminder of such possible strategic issues).
The second study uses the previously collected launch data, confined to Earth-orbiting satellites launched between 1990 and 2008, and expanded with the failure information and retirement of each satellite to conduct a comparative analysis of satellite reliability in GEO, LEO, and MEO orbits. Reliability has long been recognized as an essential consideration in the design of space systems. However, there is limited statistical analysis of satellite reliability based on actual flight data. The objective of this second study is to conduct nonparametric satellite reliability analysis, with orbit type as a covariate, and to explore appropriate parametric fits (Weibull, lognormal, and mixture distributions). The results indicate for example that differences exist between the failure behaviors of satellites in different orbits, or that satellite infant mortality exists or dominates more clearly in a particular orbit type. The findings can be useful to satellite manufacturers as they would provide an empirical basis for reviewing and adjusting satellite testing and burn-in procedures.

Developing countries and the poor within them (i.e., the other) receive scant attention in management and organization studies (MOS). The field, thus, suffers from both ethnocentric and class biases. This research effort seeks to reduce these biases, particularly in the conversation on power taking place between MOS' critical management studies and interorganizational collaboration research streams.<br>Articulating a case study of the Sialkot soccer ball child labour project in Pakistan (1995-2003), the thesis explores the communication constraints that are faced by weak actors in interorganizational domains (a social problem and a set of organizations having a stake or interest in that problem) located in the developing world. Relying on both written documents (private and public) and field interviews, especially with women soccer ball stitchers at the village level, a typology of communication constraints is developed. These constraints are examined from the perspectives of those at the bottom of the international supply chain and the injuries these groups suffer from them are documented in the thesis. It is found that the ability of weak actors to use communication to influence a domain is highly contingent on how space and time are configured in a domain. Domains have temporal rhythms and spatial configurations. The thesis identifies two types of temporal rhythms (technocratic and subsistence clocks) and a spatial configuration (imperial space) that severely militate against weak actors exercising agency in a domain through communication. Strategies (e.g., emergent collective struggle) that can prevent weak actors from becoming subalternalized (voiceless) in a domain are also discussed. The case study permits an investigation of contemporary transnational activism that often sires interorganizational collaboration projects in developing countries. The thesis identifies two types of transnational activism (thick and thin), delineates the various elements constituting them, and shows how thin activism can lead to interorganizational projects hurting weak and powerless groups that are intended to be assisted.

Because these discussions are not predicted to be solved soon, the developing space policies must attempt to clarify these issues between the parts avoiding the retard in the development of the industry. Moreover, these policies have to promote public-private partnerships and the emersion of private entrepreneurs for a faster development of a safe, reliable, and affordable commercial space transportation.

Space-derived data lies untouched in data vaults, while many potential use cases for space applications are not exploited by the space industry. This gap may exist because the conceptualisation of the user in the satellite industry is too narrow, and yet influences the architecture and thence outcomes of a satellite mission. Assumptions about users and markets are not made on the basis of data and market research, in itself typically difficult to obtain, especially in Africa. This results in a lack of understanding of the end user and their social and economic context which feeds back to inadequately scoped requirements in satellite design. The reasons for this are not solely the limited imaginations and culture of practice of satellite engineers, but the structure of the space industry itself and its design frameworks. This limitation has impact especially for developing country applications, where the user and beneficiary concept elide in often unexamined and unchallenged ways. The satellite industry, part of the wider space industry, could borrow usefully from the IT industry in its relationship to the user and methods of deriving user requirements; in fact could consider itself part of the IT/data industry. This study explores the relationship between satellite design and the users of space-derived data, and how this is being affected by new disruptors to the traditional space industry. The implications for potential users in Africa are considered.

<p>Sweden has experienced a surge in retail labels within the food industry the last decade and this increase has meant great changes within the meat industry. Producer brands have been faced with issues of strategy formulation and changing power structures that has affected small-and medium sized companies more than others. The purpose of this thesis is to, from a small- and medium sized producer perspective; investigate the impact the increase in retail label products have on selected producer brand producing companies in the Swedish meat industry and if they constitute a major threat to the producer brands. Furthermore, the thesis addresses issues such as the present structure of the industry and future views of the meat industry.</p><p>Method</p><p>A qualitative research method was used in order to investigate the impact of the increase in retail labels. Interviews were conducted with three cured meat producers operating in the region of Småland. Furthermore, a market leading producer and representatives from the market leading retailer was also included in the study to gain a deeper understanding of market conditions.</p><p>Results</p><p>The results of the interviews shows an industry that is mature and experiencing slow and sometimes even declining growth where companies are pretty much set in their ways. The fiercest competition, over shelf space, is between producers with similar strategies instead of between producers and retailers. The increase in retail labels has meant a drastically reduced shelf space for producers to compete over. However, the three producers have taken steps in order to secure that the threat from retail labels is kept at a minimum. Nevertheless, new retail labels that will be closer to producer brands in terms of quality and price are coming. These are seen as a greater threat than the existing labels.</p>

After the analog-to-digital transition was completed in June 2009, space between channels was no longer needed for the successful transmission of TV signals. These unused portions of the UHF spectrum, popularly referred to as white spaces, represent a new opportunity for wireless networks, offering the potential for more unlicensed bandwidth and long transmission ranges. This thesis aims to throw light on the real potential of the newly released spectrum TV white space (TVWS) to enhance unlicensed networks features and to enable new services, by studying existing standards and previous deregulations, using historical data as a reference. This work arrives at the conclusion that due to strict laws and spectrum-sharing challenges, rural wireless service providers are the ones most likely to be using this spectrum as a Wi-Fi enhancement in their access points. This research assesses the real impact of the TVWS in wireless industry competition. Using a System Dynamics model, it analyzes the influence of TVWS new propagation conditions on the relationship between network user adoption, coverage, and service price, to model the evolution of the industry. The model has been calibrated with real data from telecom equipment market prices. Subscriber and coverage information from the main US mobile markets are used as inputs to adjust the network user adoption parameters. The results show that the new frequency will enhance the adoption of unlicensed networks but will not significantly affect subscribers of traditional licensed networks. This research also analyzes TVWS adoption scenarios and arrives at the conclusion that the scenario that would maximize TVWS social benefits would be the one in which both licensed and unlicensed operators accommodate and deploy networks in those regions that are profitable for them. This accommodation requires cooperation between unlicensed and licensed operators and could be done in several ways. For example, it could be done by means of direct negotiation, as is actually the case in the 5GHz band, where the Wireless Internet Service Providers operators directly discuss issues with interfering links. However, incumbents in the TVWS band are larger and more numerous, and therefore the author's recommendation is to have a regulatory framework in place that could help define the appropriate areas for licensed and unlicensed use. Thus regulatory bodies could preserve fairness while ensuring proper market competition. Before companies and authorities take any action, it is important for them to be aware of the factors that can modify the role/influence of the TV white space on whether subscribers choose licensed or unlicensed services. Thus, the thesis assesses how external factors, such as application/service availability or white space spectrum efficiency improvement, can substantially enhance TVWS network features, inducing subscribers to switch from licensed to unlicensed networks, and thereby affecting the licensed operators' subscribers. Finally, this thesis recommends that the authorities advocate for an accommodation of licensed and unlicensed operators based on an analysis of technology and economic modeling. This thesis examines the way meaning is made through the negotiation of diverse geographies by central female protagonists in a selection of recent Australian feature films. The films I analyse were predominantly produced by female writers and/or directors.
In the context of Australian Cinema, locale is an area much talked about but little theorised. It is an issue which remains in the background of much scholarship and is often tangential to many arguments but rarely constructed as a central concern. Where it is foregrounded, as in Ross Gibson's work, it is reduced to the significance of landscape or 'natural locations' rather than examining the diversity of its manifestations.
Two notable but related spatial shifts have occurred in Australian cinema of the 1990s. The first is a change in industrial practice. Female artists are now creating spaces for themselves in mainstream feature filmmaking - spaces traditionally occupied by men. This trend is away from constructions of a distinctly feminist cinema or counter-cinema which was identifiable in the 1970s. Second, there is a shift in the character of on-screen space. The presence of growing numbers of women writers, directors and producers in the Australian film industry is shifting the cinema's focus away from traditional 'masculine' topographies - the pub, the prison and the outback - thus allowing explorations of other spaces and visions to develop. I am arguing therefore that there is a feminization ofspace occurring in Australian cinema.
In this thesis I investigate representations of so-called traditional 'feminine' or domestic domains. The place of the gendered body and embodiment in films is a central concern and is theorised in the first chapter. As we move through the thesis chapters, sexed bodies enacting gender in a variety of ways and in different zones - the car, the house, the suburb and the country town - will be explored. Through these analyses I examine the methods some film directors employ to problematize space in such a way that their work overcomes the limitations of its previously dominant representations. This thesis is primarily an attempt to open up the field of criticism to acknowledge the diversity of locales which exist within the rich tapestry of Australian Cinema.

The introduction of standards in software development is more or less common practice today and regarding software for space applications, standards are one of the primary mechanisms to ensure a sufficient quality level. The space industry has special requirements in terms of reliability and dependability and the European Cooperation for Space Standardization (ECSS) standards is a tool used to fulfill them. The use of standards provides many benefits however it also comes with a compliance cost, in terms of, for example, additional documentation and activities. For making the right decisions on which development and quality assurance activities to focus on, it is important to know not only their added value but also their costs. In this paper a method is presented for a Cost of Standard Compliance Analysis (CoSCA) in software development. It consists of seven steps and is based on a model which divides the costs into four different types based on the actual reason for conducting activities required by the standard. The four different types of compliance cost are quality-adding, confidence-adding, adherence and development necessary costs. The adherence costs are those costs that are required by or follow from the use of a standard but do not add any immediate value to the functionality, quality or quality assurance of the software. As a result of a CoSCA analysis, the cost for complying with the standard for all the separate development activities is calculated. Initial results from applying the method to a company, that develops software for the space industry and complying with the ECSS standards, are presented. The result gives an indication of potential optimization possibilities and for the top ten adherence activities examples are presented. The evaluation showed that the method is practical and usable with an acceptable level of effort and that it helps pinpoint development activities with high adherence costs.

This thesis explores the discourses on working women in Dundee's jute industry c. 1870-1930. It examines how working women became knowable and visible, and some of the ways in which women negotiated the relationships of power within which they became placed. Dundee was dubbed 'a woman's town' because of the central role that women played in the city's jute industry. Although a recent range of historical scholarship has started to ask new questions about women's identities and experiences of work, this study stresses the importance of engaging more widely with questions of geography, gender, discourse and power-knowledge. I explore how working women were observed, represented and categorised through a variety of material spaces - mills and factories, streets and homes, and through a range of conceptual spaces - economic, philanthropic and medical. The thesis focuses on the very processes and gendered discourses through which working women were made known - the practices of domination and resistance, and surveillance and control, and the different forms of knowledge production, including journalism, accountancy and philanthropy. Particular attention is paid to the ways in which divisions between work and home, and boundaries between public and private, were affirmed, reaffirmed and contested by working women and other urban actors. It is suggested that the work of Michel Foucault and a wider range of geographical and feminist theory provide us with a particularly rich and pliable set of conceptual resources with which to probe working women's geographies and the processes of power-knowledge, in the Dundee context. I suggest that the web of discourse that produced Dundee's working women as objects of concern was aimed not at preventing women from working, but at scrutinising and managing every aspect of their lives.

Over the last decade, each year 2500 - 6000 Thai go to Sweden to work as berry pickers during the berry season via a regulated system of temporary work permits. Bangkok-based staffing agencies rely on the networks of local brokers to recruit workers in Thailand’s more peripheral northeastern Isan region, as part of the larger migration industry in Thailand. During the berry season, these local brokers also travel to Sweden and are part of the division of labour. Next to picking berries, their jobs can be cook, camp leader, and driver. Key concerns raised in relation to this seasonal work are precarity and vulnerability to exploitation, resulting from to the need to pay high fees to staffing agencies and a piece-rate wage-system. This thesis aims to analyze roles and positions across time and space of local Thai brokers. It does so by examining how they have come to occupy their current positions, and what their roles are in the recruitment process in Thailand and during the during the berry season in Sweden. Moreover, it investigates the interlinkages between these two roles, and how differences in remuneration and payments of fees shape precarity at the micro-scale. Based on the analysis of semi-structured interviews conducted in the Kaeng Khro district in Thailand in March 2019, this study suggests that the local brokers are industry veterans. Moreover, is suggests a large degree of variation in size and scope of local brokerage. During the berry season in Sweden, the local brokers tend to occupy positions above the regular berry pickers. Moreover, it is suggested that there is a differentiated precarity within the group of brokers, resulting from differences in the payment of wages and the need to pay fees to staffing agencies.

Developing software for high-dependable space applications and systems is a formidable task. With new political and market pressures on the space industry to deliver more software at a lower cost, optimization of their methods and standards need to be investigated. The industry has to follow standards that strictly sets quality goals and prescribes engineering processes and methods to fulfill them. The overall goal of this study is to evaluate if current use of ECSS standards is cost efficient and if there are ways to make the process leaner while still maintaining the quality and to analyze if their V&V activities can be optimized. This paper presents results from two industrial case studies of companies in the European space industry that are following ECSS standards and have various V&V activities. The case studies reported here focused on how the ECSS standards were used by the companies and how that affected their processes and how their V&V activities can be optimized.<br>Utveckling av programvara för hög funktionssäkra rymden applikationer och system är en formidabel uppgift. Given the rapid urbanization of Shanghai in the past three decades, how might we attempt to understand the changing meanings, usages, and values of urban space and the built environment, as occupied, lived, and experienced by its residents? In this dissertation, I use ethnography to explore the complex processes of urbanization and globalization in Shanghai – China’s largest and most urbanized city – examining the myriad ways that space orients and even determines the actions, commitments, and everyday sociocultural practices of the various agents and stakeholders involved in this transformation. By investigating how residents, planners, and local officials variously conceive of historic preservation and urban renewal programs, and by eschewing the artificially coherent image of the city promoted by state planners, I paint a more nuanced picture of the specific challenges faced by the populace and their creative methods of negotiation, adaptation, and appropriation in the face of a rapidly changing landscape. My primary case study is the Shanghai’s traditional alleyway neighborhoods (known locally as the lilong: 里弄) through which I investigate issues arising from their restoration and preservation: state discourse and law enforcement, globalization and local heritage, place-making, and aesthetics. What my research demonstrates is how knowledge of the global not only informs but encourages pragmatic residents to "foresee" a different future and voluntarily get involved in the process of urban renewal to enhance their interests. In this dissertation, I develop new concepts such as "gentrification from within," to explain this unique process of demographic change involving capital investment and cultural reproduction, in which the original residents themselves are agents. Also developed in this dissertation are the concepts of "traditionalism as a way of life," and "emancipatory masculinity," which explain the undergirding tension between the traditional belief of homeownership and the economic reality of modern life resulting in unprecedented patterns of social reproduction and familial formation.<br>Anthropology

We refer to the literature on SMEs’ internationalization: processual approaches, International Entrepreneurship, research investigating more specifically subcontracting firms and their modes of internationalization, as well to institutional logics perspective. We conducted a single-embedded qualitative case study in the space industry in France with five subcontracting SMEs, carried out 4 open-ended interviews, 35 semi-structured interviews, took part in 2 international events and 3 professional meetings and analyzed 830 pages of field material related to the space industry. Our analysis shows that social actors involved in space activities and SMEs perceive two institutional logics: Space as National Pride and Space as Global. These both logics drive institutional change which creates institutional uncertainty and institutional disequilibrium between French and international markets. Despite the same changing context, the five SMEs adapt different strategies reflected in different patterns of internationalization. We suggest that this variation may be explain by each SME’s receptivity to institutional change and more particularly by the meaning associated to the impact of change on firms’ activities perceived as: either local threat, status quo, ambiguity, international threat, or potential growth. Furthermore, we suggest that receptivity to institutional change and more particularly the attitude associated to the French space industry, with namely: loyalty to one big contractor, inconsistency, historical ties, new dynamic needed, and detachment may contribute to reinforce the type of strategy and to shape patterns of internationalization

There is a common thread of leadership research that theorizes the dynamic between a leader's behavior and their followers is essential in encouraging employees to exceed expectations, thereby increasing organizational performance (Bass, 1985; Bennis & Thomas, 2002; Kouzes & Posner, 1987). Research indicates transformational leadership correlates well with organizational culture, but the number of empirical studies is few. Kouzes and Posner (2002) maintain that organizations create culture; therefore a leader's behavior can and does affect organizational performance. Schein (2004) maintains it is leadership's duty to step outside the organizational culture to initiate changes (by their behavior) when warranted.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between employee perceived leadership practices and organizational culture within the aerospace industry. The U.S. space shuttle operations prime contractor, United Space Alliance, was selected as the population for this research. This research addresses the current dilemma in NASA's manned spaceflight program and their contractors with regard to their future: Organizational and cultural change must occur or routine access to space for the United States will become obsolete (Bergin, 2007; Guthrie & Shayo, 2005; Mason, 2004). United Space Alliance provides a unique population within which to sample, as it is a joint venture LLC with employees of varying heritage companies and job occupations. Use of Kouzes and Posner's Leadership Practices Inventory-Other (LPI-O) and the Denison Organizational Culture Survey (DOCS) have not been performed in such an environment.
Web-based surveys collected data from the Manufacturing and Operations directorate (N = 1793). A total of 367 surveys were completed for an initial response rate of 20.47%. Both the LPI-O and DOCS raw mean scores were compared against published databases; only the Enabling Others to Act practice scored as a moderate impact. Customer focus scored the highest amongst cultural indices, with all three Mission indices ranking in the lowest percentiles. Regression analyses indicated neither leadership practices nor cultural traits explained any differences within respondents. Hierarchical regression revealed the five leadership practices accounted for 24% of the Total Culture variance. Pearson's Product-Moment correlation examined the strength of linear association between the variables. This study provided statistically significant (ñ < .05), weak to moderate positive correlation coefficients for all hypothesized relationships.

Our society is more dependent on global problem-solving than ever before. Megaprojects are one way of solving this challenge. Even though some of them are supposed to give answers to the direst problems of our time, our knowledge about them is paradoxically poor that leads to economic losses. The areas that especially demand attention are the project architecture, relationships, and innovative governance solutions that promote collaboration. The purpose of the thesis is to explore how megaprojects are governed in regard to collaboration through the case of a science-focused intergovernmental megaproject. The report builds an understanding of megaprojects, governance, and collaboration. Then it attempts to identify how governance affects collaboration over the paradox of control and flexibility within the case of the International Space Station (ISS) as one of the most recognized examples of megaprojects. It has been found that contractual and relational governance should be both present within megaproject governance. Because historically contractual arrangements are dominating governance, additional focus is required on the relational counterpart. The five main parts of the ISS governance, legal framework, organizational structure, goals, roles, and funding system, are mainly related to contractual governance, facilitating control. However, they also feature mechanisms that promote flexibility, thus providing a platform for collaborative practices to be formed. The top tier of the legal framework provides stability but the lower tiers offer opportunities to implement changes in the program. The goals of the ISS serve as a strong motivator that puts the common goals in front of the individual agendas of the partner countries. Furthermore, concerning funding, the in-kind contributions system provides a different set of incentives through bartering, compared to the traditionally used financing, and supports the collaborative environment by building closer relationships with industry partners. The example of the ISS revealed valuable lessons to better understand intergovernmental megaprojects and solve the challenges of the future affecting us.<br>Vårt samhälle är mer beroende av problemlösning på en globalnivå där specifikt Megaprojekt är en form för att lösa denna utmaning. Även om vissa av dem ska ge svar på de allvarligaste problemen i vår tid, är vår kunskap om dem paradoxalt dålig vilket leder till ekonomiska förluster. De områden som särskilt kräver uppmärksamhet är projektarkitekturen, relationer och innovativa styrningslösningar som främjar samarbete. Syftet med denna masteruppsats är att undersöka hur megaprojekt styrs gällande samarbetet mellan vetenskapligt fokuserat mellanstatliga projekt. Uppsatsen skapar en ökad förståelse av megaprojekt, styrning och samarbete. Därefter identifieras hur styrning påverkar samarbetet över motsägelserna mellan kontroll och flexibilitet inom den International Space Station (ISS). ISS är ett av de mest erkända exemplen på megaprojekt. Man har funnit att både avtals- och relationell styrning bör vara närvarande inom megaprojektstyrning. Eftersom historiskt avtalsmässiga arrangemang är dominansstyrning krävs mer fokus på den relationella motsvarigheten. Den fem huvuddelarna av ISS styrning, rättsligt ramverk, organisationsstruktur, mål, roller och finansieringssystem är huvudsakligen relaterade till avtalsstyrning vilket underlättar kontroll. Delarna visas även ha mekanismer som främjar flexibilitet vilket skapar en plattform för kommande samarbetsmetoder. Den högsta nivån i den rättsliga ramen ger stabilitet medan de lägre nivåerna främjar möjligheter att genomföra förändringar i programmet. Målen med ISS fungerar som en stark motivator som sätter de gemensamma målen framför partnerländernas individuella dagordningar. Gällande finansiering tillhandahåller systemet med naturbidrag genom byteshandel en annan uppsättning incitament jämfört med den traditionellt använda finansieringen och stöder vidare samarbetsmiljön genom att bygga närmare relationer med industripartners. The 'peace process' is a common expression in international politics. It describes and explains events in seemingly disparate locations as Northern Ireland, the Middle East, and Southern Africa, which share only the common occurrence of violent conflict. One outstanding feature of these peace processes is the active participation of international actors or external 'third parties'. Whether they are states, international organisations or nongovernmental organisations, these external actors comprise an industry focussed on the peace process. However, in providing assistance to countries making the transition from war to peace, as an industry these external third parties often reconfigure the political space of host societies in a manner which frustrates the intended goal of attaining peace. The following analysis focuses on the process of implementing a comprehensive peace settlement to show how the peace process industry operates, using the case of Mozambique. The Mozambican peace process was selected because it is generally presented as a success which justifies similar activities in future cases. Therefore it is crucial to examine whether the intervention was a success, what kind of success and a success for whom. As Mozambique was inundated with international actors engaged in all kinds of activities, supported by substantial funding, it serves as a useful example from which to study the peace process industry at work. Mozambique is also one of the poorest countries in the world and is thus representative of larger processes in the developing world and its relationship with donors and the United Nations. This thesis draws out a number of themes on the aggregate impact of external third parties on the political space of Mozambique and uses this as a basis for reaching conclusions applicable to other cases. It seeks to contribute to debates in international relations on how questions regarding the role of international actors in peace processes and the assistance they provide should be answered.

This study is an empirical case study of the Swedish space- and automation company Unibap AB about how to build trust in the space industry. The space industry is distinctive in the way that space missions are at high stakes because of the high costs and the fact that the technology can not be modified after launch. Reliability and trust are therefore crucial factors of doing business in the space industry. Also, AI-based satellite solutions can bring huge benefits but 60% of the resistance from companies to running AI is linked to lack of trust. The concept of trust has been discussed before in the industrial marketing literature and differentiates between social sources and offer-related sources of trust. However, there appears to be an empirical as well as a theoretical gap when it comes to building trust in the space industry. Because the topic is unexplored, an exploratory methodology is used when interviewing 12 actors in the space- and high-tech industry worldwide. Since one important aspect of offer-related trust seems to be usability, this study also includes a usability evaluation of Unibap's space computer solution SpaceCloud which enables on-board AI applications. Key antecedents of trust in the space industry were found to be transparency, competence, reliability of technology, and exact delivery times. It appears that social- and offer-related trust significantly influence partnerships between companies and that offer-related trust is the most important type of trust to win contracts of tax-funded agencies. Strengths and improvements of the usability of SpaceCloud are also identified, and it is concluded that SpaceCloud has the potential to offer a new way of building satellite applications in the future.

2010 Taipei International Flora Expo has officially ended in 2011, but this event is not only Taiwan one step closer international stage also brought about a major transformation in the overall appearance of Taipei, the government needs to take better planning and to establish the future development goals, the pavilion space reserved toward the development of sustainable utilization.

The new equipment demand from TFT-LCD manufacturers drove local TFT-LCD equipment makers growing rapidly. TFT-LCD equipments have to be assembled in high-cost clean room. The factory space for assembly is one of critical resources for TFT-LCD equipment makers. In the past, many researches discussed job shop or single machine scheduling problems with time constraint. In machinery, factory space constrains scheduling. The most common way for scheduling jobs in machinery industry is to assign jobs based on experience. Therefore, the main purpose of this research is to derive a method to schedule jobs for machinery industry, develop new dispatching rules, and investigate effects of traditional and new dispatching rules under different performance measures. In this research, we develop an algorithm, Northwest corner searching algorithm to schedule jobs into the shop floor. In addition, two space dispatching rules, largest space requirement (LSR) and smallest space requirement (SSR), are also developed for sequencing jobs. We employ randomized block design to investigate how different dispatching rules perform under different measures. After the simulation experiments and analysis of results, the LSR rule performs well under two performance measures (makespan and mean space utilization) and EDD performs well under three performance measures (makespan, total tardiness and mean flow time). We find dispatching rules affect most of performance measures significantly (except number of tardy jobs). The idea of this study caused from TFT-LCD equipment industry, but the algorithm and scheduling program can applied to similar machinery industry. They can help production planers to analyze the performances of scheduling in advance.

Since the Space Race of the 1960s the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has been the face of the U.S. space industry, responsible for driving aeronautics research, exploring our solar system through human and robotic missions, and inspiring the nation through scientific achievement. NASA and its core group of large aerospace contractors have worked to successfully carry out U.S. space exploration goals and have been responsible for some of the most significant engineering successes in history. Over the past decade or so, however, it has increasingly been the private space sector advancing new markets, capturing the public imagination, and working to reduce the timeline and cost of access to space. As the Obama administration’s new space policy begins to put increased emphasis on developing the U.S. commercial space sector, legacy NASA contractors are starting to see what may be the beginnings of a new competitive environment in the human spaceflight market.
With the end of the Space Shuttle Program looming, and the restructuring of its successor the Constellation Program in progress, NASA continues to look for a way forward for its human spaceflight program. At the same time the agency’s contractors are dealing with a loss of significant work statement, a lack of new development programs, and an increase in the number of competitors entering the commercial space market. As Boeing Space Exploration attempts to traverse this turbulent period it must also look ahead to the competitive conditions which may result from these changes. It is critical that companies such as Boeing analyze the current structural trends in the industry and attempt to develop a robust strategy to position the company going forward.
This paper aims to present analysis of the current market challenges faced by Boeing Space Exploration and the emerging competitive environment in the human spaceflight industry. General competitive strategies are discussed along with recommendations on which strategic pursuits might best allow the division to maintain its leadership in the industry and successfully compete in a new, more commercial space market.<br>text

past experiences, the way the products displayed on the shelves
affects sales volume. An appropriate display technique may
create a selling place that the customers can watch, select, and
purchase products easily, and may prevent product shortage in
the stores.There are varieties of products along with large
volumes in a shop. However, the shelf space is limited. If the
methods adopted to classify and display products is
inappropriate, the customers can hardly buy what they want.
Even with hundreds and thousands of products, it is absolutely
useless for sales increase. Therefore, to fully utilize the
sales space, it is very important to find an efficient method to
allocate products onto shelf space.In this research, we first
investigated factors such as consumer behaviors, facility
equipment, and cost structure that affect shelf space allocation
behavior. From the results, we constructed a mathematical model
by defining the decision variables, the objective function, main
factors and their corresponding constraints. Through proper
solution procedures, we then determined the best shelf space
allocation plan.In order to verify the correctness and the
applicability of the model, we apply a set of real data as the
test basis. Through the sensitivity analysis, we conducted
further analysis about factors of the shelf space allocation
model and tried to find their effects. The results derived from
the research can truly offer the distribution industry a
reference tool to allocate the shelf space for different
products.

In Taiwan, Culture Creative Industry was promoted by the government. The revisiting of Culture Policy was seen as an economy growth driver. Therefore, the government rebuilt the social spaces as fields- Cultural parks. For the audience, to engage and to experience leisure is to be social included and being life-improving. In the study, ‘social policy’, ‘social spaces’ and ‘consumer culture’ are invoked as analysis frame to understand how the cultural parks could benefit the participants of the culture creative industry, also, to know the thoughts of the audience about the relationship between culture creative industry and the meaning of consumption behavior. In the research, in-depth interview, participant observation and second hand data analysis, three quality research methods are conducted to understand the core issues of culture creative industry happening in Taiwan. The most important findings are: the culture creative industry is conducting without coordinated policy and industries; the cultural parks are the main fields for the industry growth, however, the most activities happened here are based on the consumer culture. Which means the government tries to create a national aesthetics through culture creative industry provision, but it turns out to make the audience become slaves to the consumer culture.

The sugar is close to everybody''s daily life; it involves agriculture, industry and commerce section as the product. The sugar industry once influenced more than hundreds of thousands of peasants and landscape in Taiwan for hundred years.
In this article the sugar industry is considered as an intermediary of people and land on the smaller scale of region (Chi-Wei). The author aims to explore local characters, the time-space process of sugar industry developing, interaction between people and land, the cultural turn after sugar industry declining with a structuration approach and thick description and narrative method. The results of study appear:
National economic policy influences critically local sugar industry for a long time. Official interfering in Ch’ing era, people from China copied the life style in the native land, developed the sugar culture on Chi-Wei and replaced aboriginals by better agricultural knowledge.
Japanese Occupation, the governor dominated local sugar industry by political power, and established Chi-Wei in the leading position to development of sugar refining industry in region. The systems of police put down ethnicity''s conflict, promoted them into peasants and staff in sugar refining industry too. Through much better farming and sugar refining technique peasant involved in the rhythm of sugar refining industry, the sugar refining industry strengthened the interaction between peasant and land.
The Nationalist Party and government followed the old system of Japanese Occupation to promote the sugar refining industry. However, after accumulating enough foreign currency, the industrialized policy damaged the sugar industry.
The local sugar industry given up entirely due to labor cost raising, the international sugar industry declining, the market unstable changing, sugar import opening (1991), sugarcane cultivation stopping (1995), business of refining sugar stopping (2002), and Taiwan joining WTO. Recently, the sugar refining industry convert its cultural value because it constantly influence on people and land more than hundreds years. Several suggestions will be made for the local culture transition in this research:
1. Connect the local and regional (Chishan & Meinung) characteristics for taking more power and conviction.
2. Begin disscusion for common understanding of sugar industry and local characteristics identification, and win over the management of the sugar culture. The cultural transition of local sugar refining industry relies on local people and place; therefore, the discourse or relevant meaning of sugar refining industry will be more consequential.
3. Benefit from the peasants and staff of sugar refining industry who contributed to sugar industry in the past. They are all the key media and pushing hands of sugar culture.

博士<br>國立高雄師範大學<br>地理學系<br>100<br>The purpose of this study are as follows: first, to find out the inheritance of the transformational process by discussing the development of Taiwan’s yacht insustry in time and space; secondly, to expore the innovative network of the industry clusters by analyzing the production networks and the way towards industrial innovation; finally, to propose some suggestions to overcome the obstacles to the development of yacht leisure industry with a close look at the local demand of the yacht leisure industry, the institutional environment as well as the development constraints. The meothds of this study are document analysis and in-depth interview with 43 interviews.
The results show that the U.S. armies stationed in Taiwan introduce the yacht industry and Taiwan’s yacht manufacture had the chance to develpe the technology. Howerver, with the stable profits from OEM, the manufactures lacked the stress and motivation to develope their own brands. Because of this, it is difficut to learn new skills to avoid the the effect of the lock-in. With weak demand in the global yacht market from late 1980s, Taiwan's yacht industry was in rapid decline. Many manufacturers had closed down or laid off. Parts of the factories moved to China to produce small yachts, while the remaining yacht manufacturers in Taiwan strived to transite towards the development of large-scale and customization, and reduced dependence on a single market.
In the beginning, the yacht manufactures were distributed along the Tamsui River near Sanchih, Bali and Jinshan. With the increasing number of yacht manufacturers and the consideration of the labor market, land and wage costs, yacht manufacturing location was no longer confined to the northern region. The new yacht factories were located in the industrial zones instead of along the river or coast. Howerver, as the yacht develops in size, restrictions on the transportation makes the yacht factories move to the coastal location.
Under the OEM mode, Taiwan yacht manufacturing is the type of BDCCs. Therefore, it is difficult to have the autonomy of design and marketing. With the increase of manufacturing costs, Taiwan yacht industy jumped from OEM production to brand customization.
On the one hand, geographical proximity of the firms and contractor's liquidity make yacht skills diffusion. Meanwhile, friendship between the engineers accelerates the flow of knowledge within the region through formal and informal exchange. This is the embeddedness of the cluster. On the other hand, USDDC offers technology development and personnel training. MIRDC helps fims set up industry alliance to overcome skill problems. Through the above ways, the innovative learning of the yacht cluster makes the industry sticky to the local.
Because of the marine ban in the early stage, there was no yacht domestic market in Taiwan. Nevertheless, with the rise of domestic maritime activities, it is worthwhile to develope the yacht lesiure industry. This study proposes four recommendations to promote yacht industry. (1) Having the yachts dedicated agency. (2) Establishing more marinas and encouraging private investment in the industry of the yacht. (3) Enhancing the needs of yacht activities and focuing on the private personal use of the yacht. (4) Establishing the yacht Clubs to plan for the marine leisure activities.
If there is lack of domestic market in the yacht industry, it is hard to promote the related economic development. The yacht manufacturing only supported by the social resources will never become the so-called "yacht industry." Therefore, promoting yacht lesiure industry enables people to enjoy the yacht recreation, and it is helpful to consolidate the basis of the yacht industry. The yacht made and desinged by the user in Taiwan will be a better brand benefit.

And for the need’s of global social, economic and technological developments, and to meet the people living environment for the safety, health, convenience, comfort, energy-saving, that are wisdom of the intelligent dwelling space has become the computer, cell phone, the wisdom of vehicles under a technology integration innovative carrier as its main purpose of the research area.
This research method are from the intelligent dwelling space into the demand, for use of Quality Function Deployment (QFD)as the principle, that are able to successful to found the intelligent dwelling space’s related products, systems and services’ opportunities and predict the further screening worthwhile investment related industries. Finally, through the results of the research will be the key to successful industrial research and competitive factors in Chinese manufacturers made into priority projects proposed industrial strategy.
