Abstract:
Indonesia is entering an era of urban settlement transformation from horizontal landed living settlement to low-rise settlement, into the construction of vertical high-rise settlement. This resulted in the landed settlement residents that being moved to high-rise settlement, they have encountered a change of high-rise vertical living culture that different from their living culture before. This study aims to find out the use of shared space in landed living and high-rise settlement. The research method used in this research is qualitative descriptive study. The site of the research is in the landed settlement of Kampung Pulo and the high-rise settlement of Jatinegara Barat. Kampung Pulo settlement is a residence of Jatinegara Barat residents before they are moved. The result of the research shows the change of space use for shared space from landed to high-rise settlement; (1) landed settlement more accommodate the diversity of communal activities than high- rise settlement. (2) in the landed settlement there is a territory transition space that accommodates the needs of interaction, homebased business activities, and play, whereas high-rise settlement there is no more transition space, so the need for interaction and play is contained in the public space, while the trading activities needs are mostly found within the private area. (3) In landed settlements, the shared space used for communal activities is more multifunctional than high rise settlement.

Abstract:
The increasing numbers of people and buildings that continue to grow and tend to be uncontrolled in the settlement causing some negative impacts one of them is the consistency of land allotment. This has resulted in some impacts such as ineffective utilities and environmental infrastructures, no mitigation system, and the unavailability of space for public spaces and other supporting facilities that supposed to be available within a settlement. Kampung Arab is one of a densely populated settlements located in the middle of business center area of Manado City, occupies the Mahakam riverbank. The limited space available in Kampung Arab has caused the settlements tend to be slummed and doesn’t have public open space as one of the residential support facilities. In addition, this settlement expands riverbanks so the functions of riverbanks become disturbed, and these settlements are often at risk of flooding. The purpose of this research is to analyze the function of Mahakam riverbanks against flood risk and to analyze the possibility of public space and pedestrian ways availability at the location of Mahakam riverbanks around the Kampung Arab settlement. The research method is qualitative descriptive method. Primary data were obtained through field observation, documentation, and interviews. The research is located in Kampung Arab settlement which occupies the banks of Mahakam River. Further analysis is done: 1) analysis of existing settlement of Kampung Arab to the Mahakam River related to: building’s orientation, river border, activity and behavior of society 2] analysis of public open space availability and its former elements, 3] analysis of settlement utility system and at the final stage conducted an analysis related to community activities and behavior. Expected results through this research are: improving function and quality of Mahakam River, restoring the function of riverbanks and public open space availability as social interaction space.

Abstract:
Over generations, economic development has accelerated traditional settlements in Taiwan while losing traditional culture. In Hakka villages, this is manifested in the changes in defensive spaces, the ‘spirit of place,’ and land use. Although some progress has been made through research into related issues, a correlated view has been missing. To explore the connection between the ‘spirit of place’ and defensive spaces in Wugoushui, a traditional representative settlement in Taiwan, this paper probes three questions: What are the changes in defensive spaces? What are the changes in the spirit of place? What are the connections between them? Taking the sixteen criteria of secure defensive space as the theoretical foundation, through more than a year of structured observations and in-depth interviews with ten representative residents, and based on context analysis and site analysis of the information collected, this paper has concluded that, although the actual functionality of Wugoushui settlement’s spiritual, behavioural, and physical defences have disappeared, cultural characteristics related to the settlement traditions, including religious beliefs, trust, sense of belonging, street network, nodes, institutions, territory, and social networks, constitute a concrete manifestation of the defensive space and the spirit of place as of today. This research contributes to developing a theory of the relevance of the spirit of place to the defensive space of settlements from a sustainability perspective and improving the cultural preservation and land management of traditional settlements.

Abstract:
Uneven support settlements are a liability for every structure. However, as space trusses typically span large areas on few outer supports, they are more likely to encounter some uneven settlements. This paper presents an assessment of the sensitivity of space trusses to settlements in various situations with different aspect ratios and supporting conditions, and under different types and magnitudes of uneven support settlement. Additionally, the effect of composite action between a top concrete slab and a steel truss on truss sensitivity to uneven settlements is assessed. The work is carried out on twelve non-composite and composite square-on-square space trusses.

Abstract:
The sustainability of the human settlement space environment is an eternal subject of human exploration. There hides the idea of human settlement space in an externally displayed material environment. This paper takes Dai villages in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan as the research object. Dai villages are the place where the ancestors of Dai people live, produce, and collectively construct human settlement, production, and spirit. Taking field investigation data and maps of Dai settlement areas as data sources, this paper explores Dai people’s view of human settlement space, analyzes the spatial cultural connotation of Dai villages, and the concept of sustainable human settlements ecology through the analysis of the factors of the villages’ spatial form. The survey results are as follows: (1) the villages are usually located at river valleys and basin areas, which are characteristic of facing the sun and near the water, embodying the persevering ecological concept of “adapting to local conditions and coexisting with nature”. (2) Dai people are one of the earliest “rice-growing nationalities”. Dai people’s settlements have formed a sustainable human settlement ecological space and the spatial pattern of “water-forest-field-village” is an organic whole. (3) The combination of Dai’s primitive religious ecology and Southern Buddhist culture has formed the characteristic of “advocating nature and Buddhism” and a unique concept of settlement space.

Abstract:
Multisource data, spatial density analysis, and a gravity model were used to evaluate and analyze differentiation and controls of human settlement locations in Jinan, China. The results indicate the following. (a) The spatial distribution of human settlements follows a block-style, is axially extended, and has a multicenter development pattern with a significant circular structure. (b) The distributions of many settlement types are similar to the total settlement distribution. Residential space exhibits the highest correlation with public space, whereas financial space has the smallest correlation with business space. A high matching value for human settlement is found at the junction of the five districts in Jinan, whereas the Pingyin and Shanghe counties exhibit the lowest value. (c) Areas with human settlement exhibit typical hierarchies. Performance is dominated by the five districts, Zhangqiu is subdominant, and other districts represent an edge-dependent hierarchical system. Radial spatial settlement structures are centered on the five districts, with a centripetal and multicentric “western dense, eastern sparse” regional pattern. (d) Topography is the main factor that generates differentiation. Road network density affects the distribution and grade of human settlement areas, gross domestic factor is a key factor that affects the formation of human settlement structures, and population aggregation is a prerequisite for human settlement distribution, as well as a catalytic factor for differentiation of human settlements.

Abstract:
Mlaten settlement is one of the old neighborhoods in the city of Semarang that arrangement very concerned about the existence of a public space. The neighborhood was designed by Thomas Karsten in 1994 for low-income people with the design concept of "Garden City" which is very attentive to the good order of settlement patterns with emphasis on the existence of public space in the form of neighborhood parks and roads are equipped with a boulevard. Currently Mlaten settlements have become congested, the existence of public spaces began to have a variety of activities. The diversity of activities and multifunctional use of public space in residential Mlaten today shows the importance of public space as well as irregularities in the use of public space. Therefore, the study will be assessed linkage activities of people in the Settlement Mlaten to use public space to form their utilization patterns. The approach taken in this research using qualitative methods rationalistic approach. The analytical tool used is the 'behavioral mapping' to obtain information about the behavior, activities of individuals and groups associated with spatial systems through analysis of activity patterns and forms of space utilization. The conclusion from this study is the public space in Settlement Mlaten into a multifunctional space to support the activities of citizens outside the residential space, public space is not only a space that is used for public purposes, but also to meet the needs of personal citizens such as the emergence of a drying, parking, and put the used goods or merchandise that occur in public spaces. The pattern of use of public space in Settlement Mlaten showed a pattern that tends to accumulate at the edge of the garden or in the middle of the boulevard road to activities that are personal as drying/ washing, parking, putting the former home goods. While gathering or spreading pattern is happening on the utilization of public activity people like child's play, sports, or just sitting. Keywords: Settlement, Utilization Patterns, Public Space, and Activities.

Abstract:
Service infrastructure related to population density and space usage. This is due to the increasingly crowded population can affect the decrease in public spending per capita, so the quality of public services declined. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of settlement density on infrastructures service in Banda Aceh City. The statistical method used is descriptive analysis and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis through AMOS software. This research was conducted for three weeks by distributing questionnaires to 100 respondents who are head of household domiciled in Banda Aceh City. Based on the result of research, it is found that the density of settlement has negative effect to infrastructure service. This is indicated by the coefficient value of -0,180. The more dense a settlement the infrastructure service in the settlement is less good. The density of settlements negatively affected the use of space with a coefficient value of -0,160. The higher the density of the settlements, the use of space is less good. Spatial use has positive and significant effect on infrastructure service, with coefficient value of 0,471. The better the use of space in a settlement will be better also infrastructure services in the settlement. Improving the quality of infrastructure services due to the use of space is very significant.

Abstract:
To explore the future development state of urban and rural settlements, we combined random forest algorithm (RFA) and cellular automata (CA) to simulate high precision in urban and rural settlements in Aksu city. The settlement distribution was predicted for the next 10 years, and suggestions for urban and rural settlements were proposed based on a “production–life–ecology” space. The results show the following: Transportation factors and administrative location have an important influence on the development of settlements, and infrastructure has a greater impact on the development of settlements. The overall accuracy of the 2019 settlement distribution obtained through the RFA–CA model simulation is 93.8%, with a G-mean coefficient of 0.815. The simulation accuracy is better and more suitable for the simulation and prediction of settlement expansion than the logistic-CA model. The forecasted settlement expansion in 2029 for Aksu city is 58.36 km2 of settlement expansion compared to the 2019 settlement distribution, with an overall growth trend for sparse north-south and dense central areas. This study analyzed the causes of settlement expansion in 19 regions of Aksu city, explored the main function of “production–life–ecology” space in different areas, and proposed layout optimizations from the perspective of production, life, and ecology. The results of this study can provide a reference for the spatial planning and rural revitalization strategy of Aksu city.

Abstract:
A general explanatory framework for the social processes underpinning urbanisation should account for empirical regularities that are shared among contemporary urban systems and ancient settlement systems known throughout archaeology and history. The identification of such shared properties has been facilitated by research traditions in each field that define cities and settlements as areas that capture networks of social interaction embedded in space. Using Settlement Scaling Theory (SST) – a set of hypotheses and mathematical relationships that together generate predictions for how measurable quantitative attributes of settlements are related to their population size – we show that aggregate properties of ancient settlement systems and contemporary metropolitan systems scale up in similar ways across time, geography and culture. Settlement scaling theory thus provides a unified framework for understanding and predicting these regularities across time and space, and for identifying putative processes common to all human settlements.

Abstract:
Urban informality remains a consistent challenge and matter of debate by planners and policymakers in the urbanising cities of sub-Saharan Africa. A common manifestation of urban informality in African cities is the sprawling informal settlements that constitute the only available housing option for the majority of the urban poor. The analysis of informal urban settlement’s environmental composition, physical modelling and socio-economic and policy analysis have been areas of recent study. However there is limited literature on how the urban poor communities in Zambia manipulate their social, spatial and economic environments to meet their needs. This article seeks to broaden the knowledge base on the way informal urban settlement communities manipulate their urban space. The built environment provides the setting for human interaction and the explanatory theory of Environment-Behaviour Relations provides a suitable analytical framework for the identification of useful parameters for developing future settlement interventions. The study employs a case study method of research to analyse the informal urban settlement settings. Ng’ombe, a peri-urban informal settlement in Lusaka, Zambia is the case study location for this research. Analysis of social, spatial and economic environment at neighbourhood level provides vital information about the informal urban settlement conditions. The study in particular addresses the question of how the social-spatial circumstances of the informal urban population in the developing world influence and defines their built environment. The study shows that systems of settings and system of activities in Ng’ombe offer a suitable analytical framework for studying the settlement characteristics that can guide in formulating strategies for settlement regularisation. Residents devise means of adapting and manipulating their informal urban space to suit their immediate needs and they also devise livelihood coping strategies in the midst of their informal settings. The paper likewise contributes to the growing body of knowledge in urban informality.

Abstract:
Over the last 20 years, Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, has witnessed unprecedented urbanisation. Nomadic families from the rural provinces of the country have been pouring into the city and developing the so-called ‘ger settlements’. The traditional mobile dwelling, the ger (Mongolian for ‘yurt’), forms the nucleus of semi-formal settlement compounds, where yurts and makeshift shelters are surrounded by improvised walls and connected by dusty access lanes. Ger settlements lack essential urban services, such as water and sewage systems, as well as many public services and public spaces. At the same time, ger settlements are dynamic, hybrid spaces in which nomadic/rural and urban lifestyles still merge today, bearing problems but also opportunities for the city, as linkages to former nomadic lifestyles. The paper discusses challenges to community making and empowerment when transforming from nomadic life style to urban life and these are linked to the traditions and daily routines of ger settlement Yarmag.

Abstract:
Shielding tunnel construction always has negative impacts on the surrounding buildings. Because of repeated disturbances caused by the construction, more attention should be paid to the impacts of the nonsynchronous construction of a twin-tunnel. In this research, a three-dimensional model was established to simulate the construction process of a twin-tunnel in a section of the Hefei No. 4 metro line, and the calculation results were validated with the measured settlement data. Based on the model, the ground settlement and the existing pipeline responses were studied in detail. The results showed that, after the first tunnel (FT) construction, the settlement curves conformed to a Gaussian distribution. Additionally, after the second tunnel (ST) construction, the final settlement curves were no longer completely symmetrical. The influences of the twin-tunnel space and the pipeline-soil relative stiffness on the settlements were further studied. The results showed that the final settlement curves of the ground surface and the pipeline were mainly W-shaped, U-shaped, and V-shaped. As the twin-tunnel space increased and the pipeline-soil relative stiffness decreased, the settlement curve gradually changed from V-shaped to W-shaped. C was defined as the ratio of two maximum settlements in the W-shaped settlement curve. As the space increased, C started to decrease from 1 and then increased to 1.

Abstract:
International Space Law forms one of the most recently established branches of international law. Its progressive development requires effective means to settle disputes at an international level. A generally accepted system to settle disputes on space law matters peacefully would not only benefit the world community by reducing tension in international relations, but would also appear to be indispensible for an increase in the reliability and credibility of this new field of international law. Moreover, enhanced trust in the existing system of international regulation of space activities could facilitate the willingness of nations to extend and elaborate this specific field of international law. Establishment of an effective mechanism for dispute settlement in international space law could positively influence the general subject matter of peaceful settlement of international disputes by setting an example for international relations in the increasingly dependant world of modern times.

Kampung Bajo along the bay of Bone South Sulawesi, inhabited by Bajo tribe and Bugis tribes coexist so that there is social-cultural interaction. Since 1905 the life of the Bajo tribe has changed, they began to open themselves to relationships, initially exchange the staple for its survival. As a result of these relationships, dynamics arise in the use of space both micro space, meso and macro space in the scale of settlements, making it very difficult to see the limits of territory in the use of space. Territory deals with spaces with a certain extent where individuals or groups use and defend their exclusive territory. Seeing this, the research is important and interesting to do, focused on the concept of the territory of social space in the context of the interaction of two ethnic Bajo tribe and Bugis tribe in the form of settlement, using phenomenology method.

Abstract:
Fisherman settlements are physically different to common urban settlements, because it has a uniqueness reflect to their tradition and culture. Some periodical observation has been made in Tambakmulyo fisherman settlement-Semarang shown different phenomena, which the fisherman’s urban space has visual similarity to the common open space. The settlement image has been melting away because of some unique activities has been less dominant conducted. This research has a purpose to get more understanding about the urban space transformation in both physical and socio-spatial point of views, while deductive-rationalistic approach also have been used to support research objectives. In addition, a descriptive-qualitative method has been proposed in order to reveal the urban space transformation phenomena. The urban space transformation in the fisherman settlements has been occurred, based on the physical form analysis and socio-spatial observation. Furthermore, this study has been successfully finding the urban space transformation phenomena, from the sea oriented toward the mainland, which is the fisherman unique activities are no longer dominated their urban space.

Abstract:
The hybrid concept that develops in urban community settlements in an unplaning manner has led to various forms of settlement patterns that are adapted to social, economic and environmental conditions. This hybridity condition is potential for more innovative settlement consolidation efforts. This research was conducted to examine the quality of the hybridity formed in urban village settlements in Sindulang Satu Village, Manado, and to find the consolidation principle of settlement patterns by developing hybridity values at the site location. The quality of the hybridity was examined based on the perspective of programming hybrid, operational hybrid and spatial hybrid. This study used a qualitative research method, with modeling and experimental simulation technique approach. The analysis of settlement space performance was done by statistical calculations and graphical analysis using space syntax method. The research data was obtained using questionnaire, interviews and observations methods of samples that met the criteria of purposive sampling. The results of this study showed the potential of the hybridity in site locations with good quality, so that it became a consideration in formulating the principle of settlement pattern consolidation to increase site hybridity.

Abstract:
Purpose Historically, post-disaster reconstruction policies and practice ignore the embedded knowledge of the affected population; the process following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti followed this trend. This paper aims to examine the production of social space in self-settled post-disaster settlements in Leogane and Port-au-Prince, Haiti, the paper demonstrates the role that traditional settlement patterns played in the production of social capital. Design/methodology/approach A multi-sited case study approach was implemented to uncover the patterns of the lakou, which is a primary Haitian, traditional settlement pattern reflecting the familial social structure, present in self-settled post-disaster settlements. The study took place between February and June of 2012, two years after the 2010 earthquake across settlements in Leogane and Port-au-Prince. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 40 inhabitants across the settlements to uncover meanings attached to the creation of space. Together with behavior mapping and participant observations, the interviews were analyzed to validate the reproduction of the lakou. Findings This paper demonstrates that endogenous inhabitants create the lakou in post-disaster settlements in Haiti. This case study validates the resilience of the lakou, the inclusive nature of the lakou system, and the important role it plays in the production of social capital within post-disaster communities. Originality/value This study demonstrates the importance of traditional settlement patterns in post-disaster community well-being and it demonstrates the need to incorporate traditional settlement patterns into post-disaster planning strategies. Furthermore, the study validates that traditional settlement patterns support the production of social capital within a community.

A person's views or beliefs affect space in the coastal environment. The settlement in the Kampung Nelayan Indah Belawan Medan was built because of the government's assumption in building the settlement and spatial planning in the coastal area. The space formed in the settlement is adapted to the pattern of community activities that occupy it to facilitate local people in doing their work outside the room. The coastal areas also affect the social perspectives of people living in settlements. Social views arise because of age, education, socioeconomic, socio-cultural, counseling. Researchers use quantitative methods in analyzing the public perception and social view of the reality of space formed in the Kampung Nelayan Indah Belawan Medan. This article introduces the special issue ‘Dis-placed’. Questioning the term ‘refugee’ as an identity marker and pointing at the problematic connotations it embodies, the article explores the spatial forms of refugee experience. The knowledge of space, as produced within disciplines such as geography, urban planning, and architecture, is deployed by states to limit the movements of forced migrants across and within national borders. In response, the article calls for social/spatial justice, arguing that this can only be achieved through the blurring of the boundaries between host and refugee identities. The contributions in this special issue present investigations on different facets of the spatiality of forced migration through various disciplinary approaches and methodologies. Taken together, they underline the importance of the link between space and refugee agency in tackling forced migration.

Abstract:
The Settlements near the Local Community Health Centers (LCHC) may have a negative impact on the settlement environment, especially is air quality due to the transportation sector near LCHC and community activities around the LCHC. This study evaluated air quality in three Settlements near the LCHC in Cimahi City, West Java Province, among others were: settlements in Cimahi Selatan, Cimahi Tengah and Cimahi Utara Districts. The air quality parameters were Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Ozone (O3), and Total Suspended Particulate (TSP) at three Locations of the Settlement. Air Quality Evaluation results indicate that all gaseous parameters were below air quality standards based on Government Law No.41 Year 1999 about Air Pollution Control, but Total Suspended Particulate (TSP) concentration in settlements of Cimahi Tengah and Cimahi Selatan Districts have exceeded the standard. However the lowest gaseous concentration was found in Settlement of Cimahi Tengah District. The community can play a role in improving the air quality in the settlements by providing green open space. Keywords: Air Quality, Local Community Health Centers (LCHC), Settlement.

Abstract:
The percentage of green open space (RTH) in Jakarta is only 9.6%. It is very lower than the minimum limit which be set by the World Health Organization (WHO), which is 30% of total area of a city. One cause of the least of remaining green open space in Jakarta is the fast growing of settlements. To prevent green open space in Jakarta is not diminished, Jakarta Provincial Government needs to change the strategy of development of settlements from horizontal to vertical. Vertical settlement is shaped in flats or apartments. Flats or apartments are the right alternative to answer the high demand of land for settlement on one side and still be able to maintain the integrity of the vast green open space on the other side. Despite this effort to realize the vertical settlements are blocked by three factors, i.e.: society, developer, and the Provincial Government of Jakarta. To overcome these problems, there are three factors to consider in determining government policy, namely: discourse / narratives, politic interest, and actors / network.

Abstract:
The article assesses the intensity of transformation of settlement pattern in Yakutia, the largest northern region of Russia, based on an analysis of 1939-2010 censuses and contemporary statistics. Scope of the work includes the following: to assess key socio-economic results of rural and urban settlement pattern transformation in the 20th century, to determine the most persistent primary units of settlement pattern, and to identify current trends in the settlement pattern of Yakutia. The research database was built based on digitization of Federal State Statistics Service in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) population censuses archives. The period under review shows a trend toward larger size of settlements due to two parallel processes: urbanization as a result of industrial development, and compression of rural settlement system due to amalgamation of rural settlements. From 1939 to the present time, Yakutia’s settlement system has been evolving from dispersed type to large settlement type. There were two major waves in the structuring of space in Yakutia. During the first one, caused by industrialization and complete collectivization, shrinking of rural settlement system was accompanied by setup of rural and urban settlements; it started in the 1930s and lasted until late 1950s. The second wave, concurrent with controlled compression of rural settlement pattern as part of elimination of unpromising sovkhoz state farms, was associated with a full-scale development of urban settlement pattern under planned Soviet deployment. Starting from 2002, market mechanisms have changed the direction of development of settlement system and spatial structure of economic activity. Despite several constraints, which include high transportation costs, focal development, key role of mining and resource sector, distinctive features of traditional economies and agriculture, agglomeration processes have gained momentum in the region. Spatial concentration of population is taking place at relatively high rates, primarily in the core of the system - Yakutsk agglomeration. Compression capacity of settlement system in the region is far from being exhausted, as evidenced by behavior of Theil and Herfindahl-Hirschman indices, as well as by average population density of settlements.

Public green open space is the use of green open space that is focused on the public interest and is under the ownership and management of local government or local comunity. However, the existence of green open spaces is reduced due to the rapid development of education, housing and trading areas in Tembalang Semarang. Besides that, the high demand for settlement area in Tembalang increased along with the increase of population growth. The main problem that is usually faced in the settlement is green open space available is very limited. The limitation of green open space in residential areas is also caused by the absence of planning green space. This research is identified public green open space like the green line on the side of the road and neighborhood space/park, where low carbon city is a way to make sustainable urban envitronment by make settlement area to be green.

Abstract:
After a brief counter-urbanization of the early 1990s, rural out-migration resumed in Russia. Population concentrates in large settlements, while small and medium-sized towns and villages lose people. The farther rural settlements from regional center the greater the outflow of people. Centripetal tendencies can be mitigated or amplified at local level, where specific conditions of the area come to fore. The authors suggest settlement network pattern as one of such contextual factors, whose effects on population dynamics are still poorly understood. The paper poses two questions: what the effects of settlement network topology on the rate of population concentration are, and how population dynamics in individual settlements depends on their position in settlement network. Based on a case study of Tyumen oblast of Russia the authors investigated population dynamics in 2002–2010 with methods of network, cluster and regression analysis. The authors did not find relationship between density and centralization of settlement network and rate of population concentration. However, the study revealed a significant role, played by the network position in determining individual settlements population increase/decrease. Together with initial population size, the network position explained 23–24% of the variance in population dynamics among the towns and villages of Tyumen oblast. Outside the Tyumen metropolitan area settlements with highest inter-district network centrality grew. It is noteworthy that configuration of the regional settlement network at inter-district level emerged during the period of colonization of Western Siberia in 17–19 centuries. The configuration largely stems from the river network. Thus, even if the factors, which determined settlement network pattern, have lost their force, the settlement pattern itself continues to affect social space.

Abstract:
The contemporary relevance of archaeology would be greatly enhanced if archaeologists could develop theory that frames human societies of all scales in the same terms. We present evidence that an approach known as settlement scaling theory can contribute to such a framework. The theory proposes that a variety of aggregate socioeconomic properties of human networks emerge from individuals arranging themselves in space so as to balance the costs of movement with the benefits of social interactions. This balancing leads to settlements that concentrate human interactions and their products in space and time in an open-ended way. The parameters and processes embedded in settlement scaling models are very basic, and this suggests that scaling phenomena should be observable in the archaeological record of middle-range societies just as readily as they have been observed in contemporary first-world nations. In this paper, we show that quantitative scaling relationships observed for modern urban systems, and more recently for early civilizations, are also apparent in settlement data from the Central Mesa Verde and northern Middle Missouri regions of North America. These findings suggest that settlement scaling theory may help increase the practical relevance of archaeology for present-day concerns.

Abstract:
This paper explores how the lifecycles of Middle Bronze Age settlements were intimately related at both a practical and metaphorical level to the lifecycles of their inhabitants. Many settlements of this date appear to have been single-generational sites. Building sequences and other changes in the use of settlement space can be understood within a framework that explores how the demographic, social, and economic circumstances of a site's occupants changed over time. However, the lifecycle of the settlement was not only related to that of its occupants in practical terms; each was also a symbolic representation of the other. For example, such acts as the deposition of whole quernstones or animal burials in pits and ditches may have been carried out at critical points in the lifecycle of a settlement, its structures, and its inhabitants. The notion that settlements had lifecycles introduces the possibility of anthropomorphic symbolism in house architecture, a suggestion that may help to explain the presence of a standardised house form during the Middle Bronze Age. Yet, despite the formality of the architecture, there was considerable diversity in how space was actually used within the round-house. Likewise, variability in other aspects of these settlement sites suggests that, although cultural ideals may have existed, in practice the developmental cycle of each household group depended on a particular set of social and material circumstances as well as on household members' commitment to communal tradition.
