Abstract:
While researchers in social psychology often explore space and time in isolation, the relations between these dimensions are rarely considered. To address this gap, we explore a model of Time–Space Distanciation, the extent to space and time are abstracted from one another in the cultural coordination of activity. We introduce this construct with an emphasis on its interdisciplinary roots and its status as a feature of both group- and individual-level psychology. We then offer three studies providing initial evidence of the distinctiveness of this variable at both levels. We find that (1) stat

Abstract:
Drawing on interview data, this paper explores the area of child/parent negotiation. Specifically, we examine the increasing significance of the mobile phone in the way teenagers negotiate spatial boundaries with their parents. Utilising theories of time and space, especially Giddens’ concept of ‘distanciation’, we show how parents and their children use the mobile phone as a tool for negotiating curfews in public space, thus extending household discussion and negotiation outside of the home. We point out that parents are using the mobile phone to enter their children's time and space as an ‘a

Abstract:
New technologies have challenged the established conceptual understanding of time and physical space as we know it and problematized how cultural values and power dynamics between men and women are viewed. This study sought to examine the time–space distanciation and comprehension in the face of increased access to and use of new communication technologies by families in Kenya. The article addresses the following questions: (1) How have new media technologies in Kenya affected individuals’ use of space at the family level? (2) How do women and men navigate through changes in spaces occasioned

Abstract:
The article attempts to analyze the concept of “social space” from the standpoint of geography. Geographers understand space mainly as a “tabula rasa” on which human society functions and develops. However, the requirements of today require a deeper understanding of the essence of human, the study of internal motives of human activity. The category “social space” is used for this purpose. The aim of the study is to systematize scientific interpretations of the concept of “social space”, to determine its properties and characteristics in Ukrainian and foreign scientific literature. Abstract:
Globalisation intensifies global interconnectedness; reorders time and space; and stretches social, political, and economic practices across boundaries. However, globalisation is not a linear process; it takes place in discrete phases of short and concentrated bursts. The COVID-19 pandemic is one such time-space burst, or ‘eruption’. In this paper, we focus on COVID-19 as an ‘emerging epidemic’ from the perspective of citizens in Bobo-Dioulasso, the second-largest city in Burkina Faso. We explore how these citizens experience ruptures of their everyday life due to COVID-19 and how their unders

Aim of the thesis is to analyze the ability of media to provide a sense of ontological security to their users. Changes, related to the transformation of traditional society into a modern society caused in the opinion of Anthony Giddens a weakening of the sense of ontological security of individuals. Such an outcome was a result of the space-time distanciation and individuals opting out of social systems as an impact of some globalization processes. Mass media in the modern society work as a main factor of social integration and differentiation. The ability to construct the sense of ontologica
