The ‘I’ fractured by time – if Deleuze returns repeatedly to this seemingly minor moment in Kant's system, it is not simply to sound anew the theme of ‘difference’ (this time, with an a priori accent). No, Deleuze turns to this ‘interior drama’ for the same reason that Kant, in the Opus Postumum, returns to it: it presents the most direct passage from ‘interior’ (self) to ‘exterior’ (Nature). But Kant's late complication of the transcendental field undermines several of his most cherished theses – in particular, the fixity of the table of categories, the homogeneity of the forms of intuition (

If territorial fixity seems to be erected in absolute value in the text of Maryse Condé, the travel account of François-Xavier Freland invalidates the immutability of the spaces represented. Relying on the intellectual mechanics of "founding myths" of the empires of the time, Condé delegates characters who extol the virtues of territorial immobility, considering that Ségou and Toumbouctou are eternal. Based on two years of ethnographic fieldwork in mental health courts in the San Francisco Bay Area, this article juxtaposes the fixity that defines the legal concept of jurisdiction with the itineracy of homeless individuals judged by criminal courts. I assert that jurisdiction is an attempt at control: by invoking jurisdiction, courts attempt to fix people and objects within time and space so as to yield a narrative of liberal accountability for which defendants can be held responsible. We show that one can gauge fix the nonlinear realisation in an [Formula: see text] invariant manner.

In the case of a Lorentzian geometry interpretation of the theory, the field equations are shown to be equivalent to Einstein's equations.

What kind of remedy or redress can literature and other forms of counterfactual imagining offer in the face of environmental injustice? This epilogue draws together from the book’s previous chapters insights about consumerism, citizenship, enclosure, and exposure in order to contemplate this question. Pivoting from The Yes Men Fix the World (a 2009 documentary about the culture-jamming pranksters, the Yes Men) to Chinua Achebe’s reflections on the difference between “beneficent” and “malignant” fiction, the epilogue argues that we should understand all such fictions as risky: unpredictable in how their causes and effects work themselves out across time and space. Such risks entail not only exposure to the possibility of harm, but also leaps of faith into the unknown and the as-yet unrealized, as well as the prospect that the innocence we tend to imagine about ourselves might be countered with a newfound sense of complicity, entanglement, or even self-reflexive solidarity.

Abstract:
This chapter talks about the conception of critique referred in the third paragraph of Martin Heidegger's Being and Time. It describes how Heidegger precipitates the demands for critique and crisis in terms of the totality of entities that can become a field for laying bare and delimiting certain definite areas of subject matter. The area, such as, history, nature, space, life, and Daseincan serve as objects which corresponding scientific investigations may take as themes. Scientific research accomplishes the demarcation and initial fixing of the areas of subject matter. The chapter discusses Heidegger's writings on the naivety of positive scientific research that gravitates around the fact that its effective scrutiny of a field of objects that are generically determined by a basic concept neglects what is imposed on it behind its back as an unrecognized preconcept.

Abstract:
The introduction to this book begins with a detailed description of what news fixers are and how their work has evolved over time. Since the book focuses primarily on news fixing in the 21st century, the introduction historicizes the figure of the fixer, illuminating the fixer’s connections to the interpreters or guides hired by explorers, missionaries, and anthropologists of past centuries. This brief but necessary historicization is firmly rooted within the critical framework of postcolonial studies, a theoretical lens that helps me explain the deeply entrenched tradition of colonial dependence on regionally specific knowledge—knowledge that unfortunately did not prevent the misrepresentation and exploitation of the people living in these other places. The introduction then moves to an examination of the news fixers’ current role within the larger ecosystem of international reporting. Building off the rich literature found in the field of journalism studies, which examines the various elements of the labor of foreign correspondence, the introduction will show that a space must be made within journalism scholarship for the study of news fixers. What is more, the field of global journalism ethics also has much to gain from a closer examination of these locally based media employees.

"fixed the reference of our term ‘persistence5 not by means of a substantive account of the nature of persistence but by saying that persistence just is that actual process which is such that for any sort F, Fs exhibit the process just when they are not confronted with substantial changes in F-important respects.18 Since ‘persistence5 so introduced names a highly determinable process and there is some leeway both in the exact determination of sorts and in what the substantial and important sortal relative changes are, it is very hard to describe how the actual world could misleadingly fail to exhibit persistence. Notice that this reply to scepticism about judgements of persistence does not make nonsense of the sceptical worry. (Contrast the view that persistence is to be analyzed in terms of sortal-relative distributions of properties over space-time.) The present view allows us to make sense of much that the sceptic urges. Suppose that persistence is actually some process p. Then there could be a process q distinct from p but not distinguishable from p by beings like us. And there is a possible world which contains only the process q and q-variants of us who make judgements of persistence or more exactly judgements with the same conceptual role as our judgements of persistence. Taking those judgements to have the same content as our judgements, those judgements would be false through and through. However, two caveats make this supposition far from worrying. First, so long as the inhabitants of the y-world take the elementary precaution of introducing their term ‘persistence5 in a way precisely analogous to the reference-fixing method described above, the contents of those of their judgements which are naturally expressed by them in talk involving the term ‘persistence5 will not be the same as the contents of our judgements of persistence. Since ‘actual5 in their mouth picks." In Particulars, Actuality, and Identity over Time, vol 4. Routledge, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.4324/9781315052731-14.
