Abstract:
This chapter explores the significance of gender relations, gendered action, and women’s rights claims in making new politics, new publics, and new private spheres within the Malaysian national Islamic modernity project. The closely entwined moral projects of a modernizing state and revivalist Islam, especially the highly gendered cultural politics of the recent Islamizing order, have posed significant challenges for both Muslim and non-Muslim activists seeking spaces for women’s rights claims. Rejecting a simplistic association of struggles for gender justice with secularisms and secular modernity, however, the chapter points to the roles of Muslim women in the long histories of women’s organizations and women’s sections of parties, and the importance of women’s active engagements in the remaking of Muslim thought and practice in recent years. Contemporary womanist and feminist dialogue and practice are seen as highly significant elements in the ongoing reshaping of “public” and “private” spaces alike.

Abstract:
This chapter explores relationships between democratic action research and environmental political theory. In the absence of action research pedagogies, neo-liberalism will increasingly undermine the spaces and possibilities in institutions of higher education that have been integral to the development of environmental political theory. Action research pedagogy offers collaborative pathways for students, faculty, and community members to begin to address the profound ecological, political, and educational challenges of the contemporary world. The chapter contends that the transformative quotidian work involved in action research pedagogies is likely an indispensable condition for engendering civic agency, a sense of active hope, and theoretical reflection in students who are otherwise often resistant to it. With reference to the action research movement at Northern Arizona University, it illuminates ways in which action research can lead to institutional change in higher education that may catalyze environmental thought and action in dark times.

Abstract:
This chapter documents how indymedia uses communications to help congeal otherwise isolated and dispersed points of insurgency, conducting stories of shared struggle across space at multiple scales, from the hyper-local (within cities and neighborhoods) to the regional, national, and global. Specifically, it looks at how indymedia links movements and people in three distinct ways: (1) across local spaces, linking different communities together to build a stronger localized movement; (2) across geographic spaces, on a particular theme such as labor or immigrant rights; and (3) across space and theme, in an attempt to forge a global social movement. It also shows the shortcomings of this new strategy and political mode of action, which eschews leadership and therefore cannot build long-term political power. The chapter first considers the way the network operated as a connective tissue in the case of farmers in South Central Los Angeles to offer a rubric for this strategy of action. It then looks at different ways that this connective strategy operates at the local, national, and global levels, on- and offline.

Abstract:
How do instrumental interfaces map pitches onto physical locations? And how do these instrumental spaces guide players’ creative action? As a case study, this chapter examines the ten-hole diatonic harmonica. It develops a transformational model of “harmonica space” and juxtaposes it with fretboard and keyboard spaces. This model is then used in a comparative analysis of folk, blues, and jazz harmonica playing, which explores performative moves on the instrument and the resulting pitch patterns. Such analysis shows that instrumental idioms reflect both the interface’s possibilities and the player’s motor habits. This confluence may also explain situations where instruments are experienced as external agents.
