Ce travail aborde l'histoire des anciens combattants marocains de l'armée française a l 'époque. Coloniale. La constitution des premières formations marocaines d' « indigènes» mise en place par l’armée française coïncide avec la genèse du protectorat français au Maroc. Cette expérience, tentée dans la région des Chaouïa, a donné naissance, dans le courant du dernier trimestre de 1908, a six goums mixtes marocains distincts. Toutefois, la construction des formations militaires « indigènes» n'allait prendre d'ampleur au Maroc qu'au lendemain de la conclusion du traite de protectorat en 1912. Année à partir de laquelle les unités formées sont, sans cesse, mises a l'avant garde de l'action militaire coloniale. De plus, leur contribution dans les deux conflits mondiaux au service de la France, a été, a chaque fois, déterminante. Le dernier théâtre d'opérations ou ces troupes sont utilisées est l'Indochine voir pour certaines l'Algérie voisine. Cette contribution militaire des combattants marocains a, par ailleurs, amené la question de leur statut juridique au sein de l'armée française. Avec l'indépendance du Maroc en 1956, les anciens' combattants marocains continuent de percevoir une pension de l’Etat français au titre de leur parcours militaire. Pour des raisons purement économiques, les pensions militaires, versées a tous les anciens combattants originaires des pays de 1 'ex-empire colonial français, sont « cristallisées» en 1959. Dorénavant ces pensions ne connaîtront plus aucune augmentation pour suivre les fluctuations inflationnistes contrairement a celles versées a leurs frères d'armes français.

This thesis will shed light on the mechanics of women's enclosure in Spanish cinema and television since the transition to democracy, particularly convent and prison spaces. The study aims to make an original contribution to the field of Spanish cultural studies by highlighting the tension between these spaces as sites of control and sites of community, a tension which both problematizes and enriches the negotiation of the abject, the excessive, and the inassimilable within Spain. Following some contextual scene-setting laid out in the Introduction, the first two chapters explore how the convent was recuperated in the popular imagination after the end of the dictatorship. The first chapter will examine convent space in three post-transition biopics of the sixteenth century Spanish mystic, Teresa de Jesús: Josefina Molina's 1984 TVE television series, Teresa de Jesús, Ray Loriga's 2007 film Teresa, el cuerpo de Cristo, and Jorge Dorado's recent TV movie, Teresa (2015). This analysis will unravel the concrete and historical forces which have shaped representations of the saint's space, particularly how Teresa's mysticism has imbued the convent with authority as a political tool in defining national identity and gender roles. Equally, it will examine how the ineffable experience of the mystic ultimately makes the space unassimilable to any overarching power structure. The impossibility of assimilating convent space will then be the focus of the second chapter which explores the use of different aesthetic registers to render the convent socially intelligible in two mid-eighties convent films, Entre tinieblas (Almodóvar 1983) and Extramuros (Picazo 1985). The next two chapters focus on the construction and management of Otherness in representations of female homosocial enclosure during the mid-nineties. The third chapter looks at two adaptions of the stage play, Canción de cuna - José María Elorrieta's 1961 version and José Luis Garci's 1994 remake - to examine how the radical Otherness of convent enclosure has been mitigated on screen in order to ease anxieties around unmarried, childless women, and to reclaim the space as part of the national landscape. Chapter 4's analysis of Libertarias (Aranda 1995) and Entre rojas (Rodriguez 1996) will contrast this with a study of how the Otherness inherent to homosocial enclosure has also been exploited as a path towards new imaginings of community and intimacy. The final section will examine gender, memory, and martyrdom in women's prison films since 2000: Las trece rosas (Martínez-Lázaro 2007), La voz dormida (Zambrano 2011), and Estrellas que alcanzar (Rueda 2010). This chapter will consider how enclosed environments have been used to frame martyrdom narratives, problematically situating them at the intersection of traditional Catholic iconography and more contemporary depictions of imprisoned and confined women. While the study focuses primarily on cultural production since the transition to democracy, emphasis is placed throughout on tracing the roots of these representations to earlier hagiography, missionary films, and the cine religioso of the 1950s. These connections not only demonstrate the endurance of the convent and prison as significant sites in the Spanish popular imagination but also their versatility as a signifying force and the need for more nuanced readings of them in cultural studies.

I examined the nest site selection of the Spanish Imperial Eagle Aquila adalberti population of the Donana National Park (SW Spain) from 1984 to 1994, in relation to the microhabitat and macrohabitat representing vegetative composition, degree of human influence and land use. The study included 75 active nest sites and 75 random sites. Univariate analyses and Generalized Linear Models were used. Nest sites differed significantly from the random sites for 87% of habitat variables measured. The model correctly classified 85.3% of the nest sites and 86.7% of the random sites. The probability of occupation of a site by a Spanish Imperial Eagle increased with tree height, angle of aperture of the wood stand, distance to paved roads, distance to urban centre and distance to water body.<br>Four productivity parameters (laying date, number of eggs, number of nestlings and number of chicks fledged) were measured over the same 10-year period for 16 territories in the Donana Park. Spearman correlation coefficient analyses ($r sb{s}$) were used to test for relationships between territory habitat characteristics, representing microhabitat, vegetative composition, degree of human influence and land use, and productivity. Egg-laying was later in territories situated closer to urban centres (n = 16 $r sb{s}$ = $-$0,529, $P < 0.05)$ and those with more kilometres of power lines (n = 16, $r sb{s}$ = 0.518, $P < 0.05)$. No other productivity parameter was found to be influenced significantly by any of the territory features measured.

This paper will look back on the work of Equipo Cronica, who worked between 1964--1980, to reveal a production of art that centered on issues of originality and value that were grounded in attempts at social activism and a redefinition of the role of art vis-a-vis society. To achieve their goals, I will argue and describe how the two man team of artists used serialism, objectivity, hybridity, appropriation of mass media iconography and techniques, and parody to produce something that was neither an art object nor an ordinary object, but an object of criticism. The historical relevancy of such an art lies in its claims of participating in a political critique of the culture industry controlled by the oppressive Franco regime, and its wary outlook on the rapid modernization of Spain into the neo-capitalist state it is today within the multinational world order.<br>The relevance of such an examination lies in how their intentions to create a new relationship between art and society is still pertinent today in modern Spain. Since the death of Franco in 1975 there has been a feeling in Spain that the eyes of the world have been on its new democracy, leading to a campaign, led until recently by the Socialist government, to prove Spain is a modern state that has recuperated from 40 years of isolation. It has tried to demonstrate that it is progressive, not only economically and technologically, but culturally. Over the last twenty years a veritable culture industry has boomed in Spain which has been generously backed by its federal and regional governments. As Spain zealously and rapidly finds its place in the globalized multinational world order, I will demonstrate that the issues of identity pertinent to Equipo Cronica, and the tactics they used to address it, can still contribute a critical position to present-day discussions.

This dissertation analyzes the ways in which the Spanish Generation X writers José Ángel Mañas (b. 1971), Lucía Etxebarria (b. 1966), Gabriela Bustelo (b. 1962), and Pedro Maestre (b. 1967) represent Madrid and other late twentieth-century cityscapes in their respective novels Ciudad rayada (1998), Beatriz y los cuerpos celestes (1998), Veo veo (1996), and Matando dinosaurios con tirachinas (1996). These novels sketch an alarming social portrait of youth dissent in Spain's nascent democracy, which had relatively recently joined social, political, and economic arms with the rest of Western Europe. I read the representations of Madrid, Edinburgh, Elda, and Alcoy in these narratives as antagonistic and anthropomorphic spaces that stalk, coerce, and then attack the first-person narrators who scurry about them, rat-like. But these characters demonstrate impressive instincts that protect them from death and emotional destruction and strengthen their identities in the face of a postauthoritarian society enmeshed in the forces of global capitalism.
These Generation X authors introduce their characters to a discordant physical environment, one that works against the grain of the image Spain sought to show the world in 1992 as Barcelona hosted the Summer Olympics, Seville held the Universal Exposition, and Madrid was recognized as the European Union's Capital of Culture. Spain was trying to show the world that it had resurrected itself from the ashes of dictatorship to become a modern democracy worthy of a seat at Europe's table. But Mañas, Etxebarria, Bustelo, and Maestre do not accept that line of thinking. In their renderings, Spain does not emerge as successful in international political and economic arenas but as a highly conflictive nation.

This thesis examines Spanish representations of Muslim and Jewish cultures in Morocco during the colonial campaigns in the Rif (1909-1927) in relation to constructions of Spanish identity during this period. It focuses on visual and textual narratives in the press (colonial photojournalism) and on three literary texts: Carmen de Burgos' En la guerra (1909), Ernesto Giménez Caballero's Notas marruecas de un soldado (1923) and Arturo Barea's La ruta (1943). The analysis undertaken centres on the use of the motifs of the body and the city and references to the medieval Castilian ballad tradition, the Romancero, by writers and photographers to explore the cultural relationship between Spain and North Africa. The chapters explore the delineation of boundaries between Spanish and Moroccan cultures by contemporary commentators and the power structures that underpin those boundaries, considering the different hierarchies that are established in Spain's relationship with Moroccan Muslims and Jews. Chapter 1 concerns the socio-historical context of the colonial campaigns and highlights the significance of the question of Spain's identity in relation to Morocco during this period. Chapter 2 compares representations of cultural and ethnic affinity between Spain and Morocco, arguing that beyond merely serving as a tool of colonial domination, they are harnessed in some cases to support the colonial venture, in others to challenge it, and yet in others to explore the pre-modern origins of the Spanish nation. In many of the examples examined, a process of self-Orientalisation is observed, where the 'Orientalist' and colonialist gaze is turned back on Spain as well as on Morocco. Chapter 3 examines representations of Muslim and Jewish alterity, arguing that these assertions of difference reveal Spanish anxieties about non-difference from North Africa, cultural regression, national fragmentation, and Spain's ability to dominate the protectorate. I conclude that these anxieties provide the fundamental underpinning to Spanish constructions of Morocco during the Rif War, and that this self-awareness about non-difference and failures of domination unsettles the predominant paradigm of discourse analysis within colonial studies.

During recent years, jellyfish blooms have become in a passionate issue among marine scientists with a series of studies and reviews. The main concern about this blooms are related with ecosystem and socio-economic impacts and lately with the possibility of a global increase in these blooms. Jellyfish populations are known to follow periodic fluctuations in occurrence, abundance (biomass), where some regions, like the Mediterranean Sea, appear to sustain a long-term increase. The Mediterranean Sea has been largely and historically affected with blooms of several jellyfish species. Among them Pelagia noctiluca is the most abundant and the most problematic jellyfish species in the Western Mediterranean. Nevertheless, little information about the environmental restriction on the spatio-temporal dynamics of jellyfish blooms is available. In order to address these needs, this thesis has been structured covering two geographical areas reflecting two different approaches to understanding jellyfish spatio-temporal dynamics, bloom formation, impacts and analytical procedures. The first part of the thesis (Papers 1-3) deals with the outbreaks of the cubozoan Carybdea marsupialis along the coast of Denia (Alicante), including innovative work to develop experimentally based tools and analyses to generate scientifically-based recommendations for stakeholders. The second part of this thesis was done on the northern Mediterranean Spanish coast (Catalan coast) (Papers 4-6). This work is mostly based on stranded jellyfish data collected by the MEDUSA project in association with the Catalan Water Agency (ACA). The general objective of the Thesis was to understand the spatio-temporal dynamics of the jellyfish along the Spanish Mediterranean coast and the economic impacts of their blooms. Along the coast of Denia (Alicante), the coastal box jellyfish Carybdea marsupialis has caused major concern due to its painful sting and high abundances since 2008.The effects of environmental variables on the local (~ tens of kilometres) abundance of the cubomedusae showed that sea surface temperature (SST) and salinity were the main environmental variables, followed by those related to primary and secondary production and local retention or transportation to the coast. This conclusion led to our management recommendation that, to reduce the blooms of C. marsupialis, crop fertilizers and sewage discharges should be reduced in highly populated or industrialized areas. Most importantly, high amounts of nutrients reaching the coast (by rivers or ground water discharges) should be prevented, especially in early spring. The mauve stinger Pelagia noctiluca is the most common jellyfish in the Mediterranean Sea. Along the Catalan Coast, stranded P. noctiluca medusae occurred throughout the sampling period, but with highest abundances in spring and spatially correlated with submarine canyons. Bayesian analysis of the importance of stochastic versus deterministic drivers of jellyfish outbreaks along the Catalan Coast showed that jellyfish outbreaks were more frequent in May and June, particularly in the years 2009 and 2010. Results indicated that deterministic processes were more important than the stochastic component of environmental variation, suggesting that extreme events, visualized as the compound effects of environmental variables, did not affect the probability of an outbreak along the Catalan Coast. From a stated-choice questionnaire we calculated that the well-being gains associated with a reduction of jellyfish outbreaks in this area would range between €312 and €322 million annually, corresponding approximately to 19% of the tourism expenditures of the Catalan population in 2012. Improvement in the beach water quality was, by far, the most valuable attribute for all types of respondents. Improvement in the beach infrastructure was ranked second and reduction in the risk of jellyfish outbreaks, third. This study confirms the urgency to provide daily information by use of the wide set of social media applications.<br>Los impactos de las proliferaciones masivas (blooms) de medusas sobre las actividades humanas, han aumentado en el último tiempo. Uno de los ecosistemas más afectados es el Mar Mediterráneo donde en las últimas décadas la frecuencia de los blooms, así como el número de especies involucradas han aumentado. Así, la necesidad de entender la dinámica espacio temporal de los blooms de medusas a lo largo de la costa Mediterránea española y sus impactos económicos, es de primera importancia. La primera parte de la tesis se desarrolló en la zona central (costa de Alicante), donde el bloom del cubozoo Carybdea marsupialis en 2008 afectó negativamente hasta 185 personas diarias, impactando negativamente al turismo local. La asociación positiva de esta especie con bajos niveles de salinidad y altos niveles de producción primaria permite sugerir que efectos sinérgicos de las descargas fluviales ricas en nutrientes por actividades agropecuarias, asociado a la transformación y alteración de hábitat, han favorecido a esta especie. La segunda parte se desarrolló en la zona norte (costa de Cataluña), donde un programa de monitoreo basado en ciencia ciudadana, reveló que siete especies de medusas son las más comunes en esta zona con diferentes dinámicas espacio – temporales. La especie más importante es el escifozoo Pelagia noctiluca, que mostró las máximas abundancias durante primavera. Altas abundancias de esta especie estuvieron espacialmente asociadas a la presencia de cañones submarinos, permitiendo establecer una nueva hipótesis acerca de la migración vertical estacional en esta especie. Los análisis bayesianos mostraron que las proliferaciones de medusas fueron más frecuentes en Mayo y Junio, particularmente en los años 2009 y 2010 en la costa Catalana. Los resultados mostraron también que los componentes determinísticos fueron más importantes que los componentes aleatorios de la variabilidad ambiental, sugiriendo que los eventos extremos no afectaron la probabilidad de una proliferación de medusas en estas costas. Basado en un cuestionario realizado a usuarios de la playa, se calculó que los bienes y servicios asociados a la reducción en proliferaciones masivas de medusas en la zona de la Costa Catalana estuvo entre €312 and €322 millones anuales, correspondiendo aproximadamente al 19% de los gastos en turismo en 2012. El mejoramiento en la calidad del agua fue el atributo más valorado, seguido por un mejoramiento en la infraestructura en las playas y la reducción en el riego de proliferaciones de medusas como el tercer atributo más valorado.

La más constante mujer is a Spanish Golden Age play written by Juan Pérez de Montalbán in 1631 and published for the first time in 1632. Although he was once one of the most famous playwrights in Madrid, known for running in the same literary and social circles as Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca, the bulk of the dramatist's work has been greatly ignored by scholars, or is referred to as being of second rate, and the author himself has nearly tragically been forgotten throughout the centuries following his short life. Although research has been conducted to chronicle the literature produced by Montalbán, his plays have been generally overlooked by modern scholars and very little of the dramatist's theatrical production has been analyzed within the last one hundred years. As a result, there are no modern editions of his plays. The intention of this thesis is to provide a regularized critical edition of La más constante mujer, together with an in-depth analysis of the life and times of its author, and the play's main themes, topics, influences, and characteristics.

This dissertation analyzes the strategies that Spanish and Hispano-African authors employ when writing about Africa in the contemporary novel (1990-2010). Focusing on the former Spanish colonial territories of Morocco, Western Sahara, and Equatorial Guinea, I analyze the post-colonial literary discourse about these regions. This study examines the new ways of conceptualizing Africa that depart from an Orientalist framework as advanced by the novelists Lorenzo Silva, Concha López Sarasúa, Ramón Mayrata, María Dueñas, Fernando Gamboa, Montserrat Abumalham, Javier Reverte, Alberto Vázquez-Figueroa, and Donato Ndongo. Their works are representative of a recent trend in Spanish letters that signals a literary focus on Africa and the African Other.
I examine these contemporary novels within their historical context, specifically engaging with the theoretical ideas of Edward Said’s Orientalism (1978), to determine to what extent his analysis of Orientalist discourse still holds value for a study of the Spanish novel of thirty years later. In addition, the work of theorists such as Gil Anidjar, Emmanuel Levinas, James C. Scott, Ryszard Kapuściński, Georges Van den Abbeele and Chandra Mohanty contribute to the analyses of specific works. These theorists provide a theoretical framework for my thesis that contemporary Spanish authors are writing Africa in ways that undermine and circumvent the legacy of Orientalist discourse. I seek to highlight the innovative approaches that these authors are taking towards their literary engagement with Africa.
The imaginary that pertains to Africa has served an integral role in the history and creation of modern Spain, and it is illuminating to trace the influences that it continues to exert on Spanish writers. In the last thirty years, Spain’s relationship with Africa has dramatically changed through peace treaties, the independence of nations, migratory patterns, tourism, and in other substantial ways. Within this dissertation, I address these changes by focusing on literary representations of political engagement, gender issues, and travel to highlight how Africa is represented in light of these recent developments. As Spanish authors continue to engage with and to write about Africa, this study hopes to show that Orientalism is no longer a prevalent discourse in the contemporary Spanish novel.

This study traces the current status of Spanish ethics as seen through the optics of historical memory. Starting from the Spanish Civil War in 1936, the thesis relates contemporary themes to their proposed origin throughout three additional distinctive eras of the 20th and 21st century in Spain: 1982-1996 (Socialist Spain), 1997-2010 (Post-modern Spain), and 2011-present (current Spain). Spanish narratives ranging from Los Abel by Matute, La magnitud de la tragedia by Monzó, "Fidelidad" of Ha dejado de llover by Barba and Las fosas de Franco by Silva are contextualized through their ethical architecture, in accordance with their socio-political context, and relationship to past historical traumas. This work proposes that the themes of anticlericalism, the pursuit of social equality, anti bureaucracy, and political distrust are trends culminating from Kohlberg's third level of morality. The thesis aims to be an exposition and legitimization of different ethical schemas that might otherwise be polarized as wrong and inferior by others.

Spanish Republican philosophers in exile defended the Second Republic, legally proclaimed on April 14, 1931. They embraced the anti-fascist cause rising in the 1920s and the 1930s in Europe. During the Civil War, which lasted three years, they stood among the people. 1939 saw the victory of General Francisco Franco, supported by Nazi Germany and the Italy of Mussolini. Threatened with death, they had no choice but to escape from Spain. Some intellectuals experienced French concentration camps but, for the most part, they found refuge in Latin America, especially in Mexico and Venezuela. In exile, they swore to remain loyal to the Second Republic and to the spirit of the Spanish people. Moved by liberal views and humane ideals, these philosophers belonged to the vanquished, as those everywhere in Europe who rose against Fascist barbarity. As a result, their respective works are still widely unknown today – despite relentless efforts made to promote their thought to a larger audience for over half a century. In addition to the historical context of crisis during the interwar period, the situation of Spanish philosophy itself is suggestive. Indeed, Spanish philosophy was institutionalised at the beginning of the twentieth century only: the Schools of Madrid and Barcelona were created. These politics of cultural and intellectual renovation are first bestowed upon the generation of philosophers I study, born in the 1900s. When the Spanish War erupts, they had become professionals of international recognition. This shows the actual limits of academic philosophy, incapable of acknowledging unorthodox ways of philosophising. The experience of exile itself serves in my opinion as a catalyst: Spanish Republican philosophers in exile seek emancipation from academic conventions to philosophise freely; that is, in Spanish and according to the spirit of the people. No doubt “poetic reason” – the true invention of Spanish Republican exile – stems from this ideal of autonomous thinking.

In this thesis I ask whether food can be used to express Catalan national identity, and if so, in what ways this occurs. In doing so, I consider the lived realities of nationalist movements, rather than simply the ideas and political claims that inform such movements. The Catalan Autonomous Community in northeast Spain is an ideal place to research this issue, due to the strengthening of nationalist sentiments there in light of the rise in support for independence from Spain. I wished to see whether this had any effect on the connections between food and national identity (or gastronationalism). National identity and food are connected in many diverse and varied ways. Food culture allows us to reflect on national identity as a whole. Themes which commonly appear in nationalist discourse, such as cultural specificity, historicism, or landscape (to name but a few), also inform discussions of national food identity. In the present case, while other markers of identity (e.g. language) are also important, ideals of Catalan nationalism may take the guise of Catalan gastronationalism as well. The current pro-independence movement has had the effect of making Catalans more aware of their cultural symbols, including cuisine, which is now one of many such symbols that can be mobilized for the expression of national identity.

2012-2013<br>Autobiography is a highly problematic genre whose main features are commonly considered memory, experience and identity. Nonetheless, there is also an inevitably degree of fiction-making concerned with the autobiographical act, as most autobiographies are inspired by a creative, and therefore fictional, impulse to select only those events and experiences in the writer’s life that build up an integrated pattern. As such, this encourages questions about fact and fiction, about the relations between reality and the text, and about origins: in this sense, there is a necessary link between the conditions – political, economic, and social – in which writers find themselves and the kinds of stories they choose to tell. The space they inhabit and the accrued meanings of space and time play a constitutive role in their narratives; but space is not given: it is culturally constructed or produced, it incorporates temporal change. The progresses in technology, the new media and migrations have finally led to «time-space compression», and to the concept of nonplaces, where the individual is out-of-the-world. In this sense, Canada perfectly represents what it means to live in a «third space» of in-betweenness: so, we will see how German-Canadian writer Frederick Philip Grove avoids categorization of literary nationalism locating himself in an isolated and paradigmatic position between literatures; we will appreciate Mordecai Richler, whose irony is crucial in order to describe the moments and spaces given to a Canadian Jew in Montreal’s ghetto; finally, we will look at Michael Ondatjee’s continuous references to the cultural and political situation in Sri Lanka, and how he uses these connections to build a sort of third-person autobiography through which he can recover the memory of the places from his Ceylonese childhood. At the end of this analysis, it will be clear how many difficulties the autobiographical impulse has to face, how many parameters it has to respect, and how much truth and fiction influence and corrupt each other. Spanish women writers that establish their literary careers early in twentieth century find themselves at an interesting historical crossroads as the world changes from an agrarian to an industrial paradigm. On one hand, this change leads to a strong current of traditionalism, to which most male writers adhere, as it offers the attractive idea of return to a pre-modern simplicity; on the other, this change opens up possibilities for social improvement and participation for those groups traditionally excluded from power. Embracing this change poses the opportunity for female subjects to reshape fundamental structures of society and, in sum, eventually create a different world where women can become full citizens.
Blanca de los Ríos, Concha Espina, Carmen de Burgos, María Lejárraga, and Caterina Albert are representative of Spanish women writers facing this situation. Their fictional works written between 1898 and 1914 offer a rich literary production that invites us to examine the emergence of new cultural and social practices. These authors renegotiate deeply rooted ideologies that structure not only gender relations but also the social class system, the spatial organization around country/city, and Spain’s national identity built around the discourse on race. Addressing conflicting perspectives between tradition and modernity through the prism of gender, the analysis of their works reveals their taking on a modern stand, hopeful of the promises brought by the new socioeconomic reality and the liberating aspect of modernity.
As Rita Felski and Barbara Mashall´s studies have pointed out, many theorists of modernity, such as Marshall Berman and Jürgen Habermas, do not take gender into consideration. Grounded in a gendered analysis, this study reveals the importance of Spanish female authors as agents of modernity at the turn of the twentieth century.

This thesis examines the Jesuit and Ignatian influence on the works of Juan Eusebio Nieremberg (1595-1658), who was a prolific and widely published author and a member of the Society of Jesus in Spain. He wrote several works across different literary genres both in Spanish and Latin, but was best known for his popular works in Spanish: two miscellanies of natural philosophy, Curiosa filosofía (1630) and Oculta filosofía (1633); a catechism, the Práctica del catecismo romano (1640); his ascetical treatises, especially De la diferencia entre lo temporal y eterno (1640); and his ‘advice-books’ to princes and nobles, most notably Causa y remedio de los males públicos (1642). As a member of the Jesuit Order, Nieremberg wrote these works with the intention to ‘save souls’, this being the main apostolic goal of the Society. While they provide people with knowledge (‘noticia’) – whether doctrinal, natural, spiritual, or political – these works teach readers to view human existence according to its true end: God’s will of salvation. All things of the temporal world are portrayed as a means to that end. In order to accomplish this goal, Nieremberg incorporates elements from Loyola’s Ejercicios espirituales (1548), the spiritual foundation of the Jesuit Order, and develops a rhetorical strategy which encourages readers to discern the will of God in the world they inhabit. He also develops this rhetoric according to some of the principal literary and artistic conventions of the seventeenth century, and provides an important example of how a prominent Jesuit writer came to express the apostolic and spiritual principles of his Order, but in the language and imagery of Spain’s Siglo de Oro.

The present thesis considers the space of connections modulo based gauge equivalence on a principal SU(2) bundle over a closed simply-connected smooth four-dimensional manifold M. Up to homotopy equivalence, this is the space of basepoint-preserving maps from M to BSU('2), the classifying space of SU(2). It depends only on the homotopy type of M which is characterized by the intersection form. The Z/pZ-homology of the mapping space for p a prime not equal to 3 is computed and given in terms of the data associated to the intersection form. For the prime 3, partial results are obtained. The main method is to consider a fibration associated to a CW decomposition of M and to show that the corresponding Eilenberg- Moore spectral sequence collapses. These results generalize from manifolds to spaces homotopy equivalent to a bouquet of 2-spheres with a single 4-cell attached. For the possible homotopy types the space of connections modulo gauge equivalence ran attain, a classification is obtained in the following sense. The homotopy type of this space is uniquely determined by the rank, type and signature modulo eight of the intersection form. On the other hand, the homotopy type determines the rank, type and signature modulo four of the intersection form. Both results together give a complete classification for the case of spin manifolds. The homotopy types of the spaces of connections modulo gauge equivalence over two spin manifolds agree if and only if the intersection forms are of the same rank. These results use a classification of unimodular bilinear forms over the ring Z/4Z. In a final part, a map is constructed from the labelled configuration spaces of points in the manifold to the mapping space. This map is shown to be asymptotically surjective in homology with Z/2Z-coefficients. For homology with general coefficients, classes are constructed which are not approximated by this map.

La daurade royale (Sparus aurata) est une espèce de sparidé dont l’aire de répartition s’étend des côtes du Sénégal à l’Irlande, et est commune en mer Méditerranée. Elle est considérée comme rare en limite nord de répartition (Manche, mer d’Irlande et mer du Nord). Depuis une dizaine d’années, l’abondance d’individus pêchés en limite nord ne cesse d’augmenter. Ce phénomène peut être expliqué par l’évolution septentrionale de son aire de répartition, en lien avec le réchauffement climatique. Aucune donnée écologique sur les populations de cette espèce en limite nord de répartition, devenues une ressource de pêche en Manche, n’est actuellement publiée dans la littérature. Les traits de vie de S. aurata ont été étudiés face à la modification spatio-temporelle de son aire de répartition, via l’analyse du régime alimentaire, de la croissance et des déplacements côtiers. D’autre part, l’étude a conduit à l’analyse de la structure de ces populations septentrionales par une approche multi-marqueur couplant la génétique et la microchimie des otolithes.L’analyse des contenus stomacaux des populations de S. aurata en limite nord de répartition confirme un régime opportuniste, avec une forte proportion d’espèces-proies du genre Mytilus. Malgré un régime alimentaire similaire, la croissance des individus est, quant à elle, plus faible que celle observée sur des individus de mer Méditerranée, ce phénomène étant conditionné par les paramètres du milieu (température, salinité). Les variations élémentaires des otolithes ont permis de caractériser les migrations côtières lors des premières années de vie des poissons avec un passage en mer en hiver et la fréquentation de zones côtières. Cela suggère la présence de zones de nourricerie le long du pourtour atlantique et de la Manche. Une variabilité inter-individuelle a été mise en évidence suggérant une plasticité comportementale des individus. Les approches de génétique, combinant l’emploi de marqueurs mitochondriaux et des microsatellites, et de microchimie des otolithes ont mis en évidence l’absence de structure au sein des populations en limite nord de répartition. Ce phénomène concorde avec la colonisation récente des populations. Cependant, une différenciation entre les individus échantillonnés le plus au sud et ceux en limite nord d’échantillonnage a été mise en évidence, suggérant peu de mélange génétique. Les allèles communs entre les individus échantillonnés évoquent une colonisation des individus de proche en proche depuis la mer Méditerranée. Des différences génétiques et de traits de vie ont été observées entre les individus échantillonnés en Manche, suggérant l’existence d’une barrière biogéographique au sein de cet environnement. La présence de conditions environnementales favorables constitue un atout majeur pour cette espèce prédatrice qui semble présenter une capacité d’acclimatation importante. L’ensemble des approches abordées dans le cadre de ces travaux ont permis d’apporter les premières données sur les traits de vie et la structure des populations d’une espèce à fort intérêt commercial dans une zone d’expansion récente en lien avec des modifications globales des conditions environnementales<br>The gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) is a sparidae species whose natural distribution stretches from Senegal to Ireland coasts, with its common habitat in the Mediterranean Sea. This species is still considered as rare in its northern limit of distribution. For a decade, the abundance of individuals caught in the northern limit (English Channel, Irish Sea and North Sea), has increased. This species is now a fishing resources in the English Channel. This phenomenon, in link with global warming, is explained by the northern expansion of its distribution range. No ecological data about this species in northern distribution range is currently published. Life history traits of S. aurata in relation to the spatio-temporal modification of its distribution range has been studied, through diet, growth and sea/coastal movement analysis. On the other hand, the population structure analysis of these northern populations has been done with a multi-marker approach coupling the genetics and otolith microchemistry.Analysis of the stomach contents of S. aurata at the northern range confirms an opportunistic diet with a high proportion of prey species from the genus Mytilus. The growth of individuals is lower than that observed on individuals in the Mediterranean Sea. This phenomenon is conditioned by environmental parameters (temperature, salinity) at the distribution range limit. Elemental composition of the otoliths allowed us to characterize the sea/coastal migrations during the first year of life, with a sea transition in winter and the occupation of coastal zones. A variability between individuals has been observed as a behavioral plasticity of individuals. This suggests the presence of nursery areas along the Atlantic and Channel Sea coasts. Otolith microchemistry and genetic approaches, combining the use of mitochondrial and microsatellites markers, have demonstrated the lack of structure within populations at the northern distribution range. This phenomenon matches with the recent population colonization. However, a differentiation was identified between the most southern individuals sampled and those at the northern sampling boundary, suggesting little genetic mixing. Common alleles between individuals suggest a “step by step” colonization of individuals from the Mediterranean Sea. Genetic and life history traits differences were observed between individuals sampled in the Channel Sea, suggesting a biogeographic barrier within this environment.Favorable environmental conditions are a major asset for this predatory species, which appears to have a huge acclimatization ability. All the various approaches discussed in this work have then made it possible to provide the first data on the life characteristics and the population structure of a species with a high commercial interest on the northern range of its distribution

This process marked the beginning of a major migratory movement which has caused Spain to become a premier destination. The response to such migration has been disparate, yet both Ecuadorian and Spanish artists as well as the Spanish press have shown the different perspectives related to a discriminatory ideology. This dissertation focuses on three cultural products and three press articles which are analyzed using the theories of Critical Discourse Analysis developed by scholars Teun Van Dijk (1998, 1999, 2007, 2009) and Antonio Bañón Hernández (2002, 2003, 2006, 2008). On one hand, the dissertation examines the novels La utopía de Madrid (2013) by Carlos Carrión and Nunca pasa nada (2007) by José Ovejero, as well as the movie Prometeo deportado (2010) by Fernando Mieles; on the other, it focuses on three articles published in 1999, 2011, and 2014 respectively by El País, La Vanguardia, and El Mundo which present the Ecuadorian population as a main character. Finally, the conclusion provides an understanding of how the creation of these products has shaped an ideology in Spaniards’ minds throughout the years and what needs to be addressed in order to obtain equal social status among native and minority groups.

Analyzing cookbooks, gastronomic guides, literature and film, this dissertationoutlines the creation of a Spanish national cuisine. Studying the works of Carmen de Burgos, Emilia Pardo Bazán, Dionisio Pérez, Ana María Herrera, Juan Mari Arzak and Ferrán Adrià among others, the project examines the evolution of this nationalist discourse by identifying common and recurring themes in an effort to extrapolate and describe the historical and cultural evolution of food from 1900 to the present day.
Within the framework of Food and Cultural Studies, this project treats cookbooks, culinary manifestos and guidebooks as texts. Influenced by a variety of culinary and gastronomic of critics such as Roland Barthes, Arjun Appadurai, Benedict Anderson, Stanley Mintz and others, this dissertation analyzes nationalism through the perspective of gastronomy as a cultural practice that contributes to individual and collective identity building.
This dissertation concludes that Spanish national cuisine has been defined as a unique, pluralistic blend of regional cuisines since the early twentieth century. While early authors such as Pardo Bazán admit to heavy French influence and the centralized hegemony of Madrid due to its privileged status as economic and political capital of Spain, most subsequent authors acknowledge that Spanish national cuisine is a construction of various regional influences and by the 1960s, this regional view of national cuisine is universally accepted. Shaped during the twentieth century by civil war, Francoism and globalization, Spanish cuisine today continues to be a blend of regional cuisines that mutually influence each other while also exhibiting the effects of a globalized world by incorporating non-Spanish ingredients and techniques into nationally accepted dishes.

Throughout her two collections of novelas, Novelas amorosas y ejemplares and Desengaños amorosos, María de Zayas, as a noble woman writing in Golden Age Spain, strategically holds onto aspects of the patriarchal society under which she lives, and from which she benefits, while simultaneously deviating slightly from some of these aspects. This adherence to and deviation from the norms characterizes her style and allows her to support some of the expected codes of conduct in her society while, at the same time, pointing out flaws and questioning these codes to show how they should be altered to make life better for both the men and women of that society.
Through various narrative voices and characters, Zayas creates a type of guidebook, or manual, for both the men and women of her society. Through cross dressing she establishes an essential equality between the abilities of the sexes and establishes that the actions of men and women are chosen activities, and are not related to innate ability or disability to perform a certain way. How individuals position themselves in regard to accepted or expected behavioral codes of conduct is a choice and, as individuals, men and women can choose to perform either negative or positive practices associated with their sex.
This dissertation looks closely at the guide that is created and the practices which are highlighted as good and bad, thus identifying which manners of being should be emulated and which should be avoided, and therefore altered as societal expectations or norms, by men and women. Through negative and positive portrayals, Zayas shows men and women how they should and should not act in order to create a more ideal and, consequently, more equal society that differs in some ways from their present society while still retaining the overall structure and values of the patriarchy under which they already exist. It is not the creation of an entirely new society that the resulting guidebook suggests, rather it suggests an alteration to the perspectives and behavior, toward the positive, of both men and women as they exist in their current society.

<p>The Laplace equation and the related p-Laplace equation are closely associated with Sobolev spaces. During the last 15 years people have been exploring the possibility of solving partial differential equations in general metric spaces by generalizing the concept of Sobolev spaces. One such generalization is the Newtonian space where one uses upper gradients to compensate for the lack of a derivative.</p><p>All papers on this topic are written for an audience of fellow researchers and people with graduate level mathematical skills. In this thesis we give an introduction to the Newtonian spaces accessible also for senior undergraduate students with only basic knowledge of functional analysis. We also give an introduction to the tools needed to deal with the Newtonian spaces. This includes measure theory and curves in general metric spaces.</p><p>Many of the properties of ordinary Sobolev spaces also apply in the generalized setting of the Newtonian spaces. This thesis includes proofs of the fact that the Newtonian spaces are Banach spaces and that under mild additional assumptions Lipschitz functions are dense there. To make them more accessible, the proofs have been extended with comments and details previously omitted. Examples are given to illustrate new concepts.</p><p>This thesis also includes my own result on the capacity associated with Newtonian spaces. This is the theorem that if a set has p-capacity zero, then the capacity of that set is zero for all smaller values of p.</p>

This thesis is a study of several spaces of continuous linear functionals on various function spaces with a natural norm inherited from a larger Banach space. The completeness of these normed linear spaces is studied in detail and several necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained in this regard. Since spaces of continuous linear functionals are inherently related to spaces of measures, their measure-theoretic counterparts are also studied. By using these counterparts, several necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained on the separability of these spaces of continuous linear functionals.<br>Ph. D.
