Abstract:
This is a work done within the sociolinguistic field. The objective of this work was to describe Spanglish and Spanenska and how these language varieties arose. Which loanwords, code switching and calques are the most frequently used in Spanglish and in Spanenska. The aim has also been to look if there are any similarities or differences between the usage of Spanglish and Spanenska when the native language is changed into a bilingual language. If the words that are used in Spanglish have an equivalency in the words used in Spanenska.   Futhermore we have described how the usage of gramatical rules, lexical and functional words are practiced, to look if there are any similarities or differences and to find out if these similarities or differences affect the usage of Spanglish or Spanenska. We have also described the three different ways: code-switching, loanwords and calques which are used in Spanglish and Spanenska.

Abstract:

Sentiment Analysis has been researched in a variety of contexts but in this thesis, the focus is on sentiment analysis in Twitter, which poses its own unique challenges such as the use of slang, abbreviations, emoticons, hashtags, and user mentions. The 140-character restriction on the length of tweets can also lead to text that is difficult even for a human to determine its sentiment. Specifically, this study will analyze sentiment analysis of bilingual (U.S. English and Spanish language) Tweets. The hypothesis here is that Bilingual sentiment analysis is more accurate than sentiment analysis in a single language (English or Spanish) when analyzing bilingual tweets. In general, currently sentiment analysis in bilingual tweets is done against an English dictionary. For each of the test cases in this thesis’ experiment we will use the Python NLTK sentiment package.

Abstract:
Thesis, Paris 4, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA040176/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Situations of population contact imply social, cultural and linguistic dynamics from which the protagonists never remain unscathed. This is the case of Hispanics in the United States, whose contact with the US culture favored the development of a mixed culture and a linguistic phenomenon known as Spanglish. Spanglish evokes concurrently linguistic, social, cultural and political questions and the purpose of the present work is to elucidate its implications in linguistics. This study focuses on transfers from English into United States Spanish, and on how these variations obey the system’s parameters. The present analysis is the latest in a series of linguistic studies focused on the oneness of the sign. It is based on the principle that variations that appeared in United States Spanish are significant ; their emergence reveals the system’s inherent dynamics and challenges the immutable nature of the cultural and linguistic factors that define the Hispanic civilization

Abstract: This paper aims to analyze enunciates about Portunhol and Spanglish from statements taken from the Internet, which will be treated as a enunciation space. From this angle we will study, at the event, how the processes and relations determine these languages practices; wich are the enunciation processes that (de) legitimize these two practices of contact between Portugues / Spanish and Spanish / English, respectively, at the interface with the "memorável". For this work we use as a Theoretical and Analytical foundation the Semantic of Enunciation and the Semantic of the Event. The corpus to be analyzed will be collected from a survey on the Internet, search engines, starting with words like Spanglish / Spanglish and portunhol / portuñol. Main objective of this study is to answer the following questions: what determines, in the enunciation space of the Internet, such practices as practices (un) legitimacy? What are the relations and senses that circulate in this space, running in determining Portunhol and Spanglish?

Abstract:

In this study a parallel is being drawn between the use of English loanwords in Spanglish in the United States, and the use of loanwords from Swedish –here called Spanenska- in oral communication between Hispanics in Sweden. Some Swedish loanwords, particularly those with an equivalent word in Spanglish, have been selected and used in a questionnaire where a group of Hispanics living in different municipalities in Sweden have stated the frequency these words are used. They have also provided personal information in order to identify possible variables that could influence the use of such words. The research shows, after a series of statistical analysis made in the Chi-square test, that the variable ‘language preference’ (reading, listening, speaking, writing) is the only one which has shown a clear statistical correlation with the index use of Spanenska. In other words, as the preference for using the Swedish language rises, the index use of Spanenska rises as well. Moreover, the most common reason for using Spanenska is, according to this group of Hispanics, it is easier to say the words in Swedish even though they exist in Spanish. The words used most frequently are those related to Swedish culture, such as "midsommar”. Ultimately, unlike what occurs in Spanglish, the women use Spanenska more than men do.

Abstract:
Literature emerging from borderland, transnational or diaspora contexts doesn’t always fit the mould of the dominant national culture where the author resides. Usually this literature is published in the language of the larger society, but sometimes authors prefer to use the language variety in which they write as one of many tools to resist assimilation and highlight their independent or hybrid identity; such is the case with Matilda Koén-Sarano's Judeo-Spanish folktales and Susana Chávez-Silverman’s Spanglish crónicas. When this is the case, translation from these varieties must be done in a way that preserves the resistance to assimilation in a different linguistic context. In this thesis I begin by defining Judeo-Spanish and Spanglish as language varieties, consider who uses them, who writes in them, and the political or personal motivations of the authors. I then problematize the broad issue of translating texts written in nonstandard language varieties. I consider power in translation generally and into English more specifically. I nuance the binary between rejecting translation completely, and embracing it wholeheartedly as essential. In the final two chapters I turn my attention to specific challenges that presented themselves in translations from Judeo-Spanish and Spanglish and explain how these challenges informed my approaches and strategies. No single translation approach or strategy emerges as a monolithic solution to all problems. Nevertheless, my original contribution to knowledge lies in the nuanced discussion and creative application of varying degrees of ethnolects (or literary dialects), writing based in phonetics, and intralinguistic translation that are explained and that are evidenced in the original translations found in the appendices.

The present thesis was developed based on the inquiring of possible forms of identification for the subjects living the cross-border experience, not only because they inhabit the interstitial space of the border, but also because of their experience between languages and cultures of more than one country. Our attention is focused initially on the Uruguay / Brazil border, since we recognize that the process of colonization in northern Uruguay was based on the establishment of a Portuguese and maintenance - speaking population whose descendants were literate in the Spanish language at the same time as their language was preserved in domestic settings, which eventually determined the emergence of a hybrid language resulting from the contact between Portuguese and Spanish. Based on the sociolinguistic studies developed since the 1950s, we have been able to observe the permanence of the hybrid mother tongue that was combated and silenced during the successive linguistic policies adopted in Uruguay until its recent recognition as the second language of the country and the attempt to consider portunhol as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Our research points to literature written in portunhol as a way of legitimization of the hybrid language and, from the selection of a historical series of the literary portunhol, we opted for the analysis of the work of the Artiguense poet Fabian Severus to compare the procedures of literary writing in the linguistic mix . Based on the concept of bi (pluri) language, proposed by Walter Mignolo (2003), we consider that the experience in the linguistic fusion would be related to a lifestyle, so we proposed to put in dialogue, through a comparative perspective - a critical method specific to dialogue within Latin American literary and literary research - the literary writing in Portuguese with the Spanglish script written by the Chicana writer Gloria Anzaldúa to imply how the language relates directly to the modes identification of cross-border subjects. Finally, we discuss how linguistic policies have dealt with the fact that the national language is not always the mother tongue of a portion of the population.

Abstract:
This work presents an overview of audiovisual translation (AVT) modes: song translation, dubbing and the new phenomenon of fansubbing. The dissertation aims to analyse the Italian dubbing and subtitling of a film and a series in Spanglish. Furthermore, it focuses on the analysis of translation techniques for multilingual audiovisual products. As a matter of fact, I decided to analyse an animated film, Coco and an American tv show, Vida. Both tv show and animated film have Mexican protagonists and present typical cultural references of the Mexican and Latinx culture. The work is divided into four chapters. The first chapter provides a historical overview of Hispanic immigration to the United States and outlines the three main groups of immigrants: Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans. Therefore, the phenomenon of language contact between Spanish and English, Spanglish or Espanglés, found within these immigration groups, is explained. The second chapter describes audiovisual translation, specifically the AVT modes of subtitling and dubbing. In particular, it deals with the phenomenon of fansubbing, which influenced audiovisual consumption, especially in Italy, a traditional dubbing country. In addition to this, the phenomenon of dubbing in Italy is explained, the origins of which can be traced back to the fascist regime. The third chapter focuses on the analysis and commentary of Coco, specifically the song translation from Spanglish to Italian and the translation challenges found throughout the film, from a cultural point of view. The fourth chapter describes the birth of the American series, the plot and the characters of Vida. Consequently, I analysed some Italian subtitles of Vida provided by the fansubbers of Subspedia. In the commentary, the main problems of the subtitling of a multilingual series are highlighted from the code-switching (between Spanish and English) and the extralinguistic and intertextual references related to the Latinx culture.

Abstract:
Since the beginning of our era, relations between civilizations and cultures from different parts of the world presented diverse linguistic contacts between speakers of different languages. These generated a variation in the grammatical use and, therefore, a new vocabulary among the contacted languages, being English one of the most outstanding ones. Nowadays, English is the most influential language in the world and its use in Peru, whether through anglicisms or in a general way, is undeniable. It is also important to mention that it is spreading and growing thanks to the support of technology and the use of social networks. The present work aims to observe the use of English in the social network of Facebook by young students from 18 to 25 years of a private university in Metropolitan Lima. This study proposes to see - with a qualitative scope - how young university students (in this particular sector) use English in their posts. The following types of use were observed in the results: Spanglish, memes and -in general circumstances- the hashtag; among other factors that could be complemented with other studies, such as the possible learning and integration of the English language in this or other social networks, and the use of this language in other branches of research.

Abstract:

Abstract:
La Llorona Don’t Swim The LA River is a collection of poems that explore the issues of growing up in East LA as a young, bilingual Chicana. These poems are an attempt to capture my experiences through story telling by blending Spanish, English, street slang, and the casual spoken diction. The speaker embodies several versions of the trickster figure: linguistic tricksterism, cultural tricksterism, gender tricksterism, and religious tricksterism. She navigates linguistic tricksterism through the code switching of English and Spanish, using Spanglish as her main dialect, and often blending in slang, creating Slanglish. In cultural tricksterism, she focuses on the experiences of the working class, the migrant workers, the bilingual speakers, and the overall generational changes in the Mexican culture. The speaker constantly searches for the meaning of what it is to be a woman and what it means to love through gender tricksterism. She looks to her mother, la Virgen De Guadalupe, and La Llorona to try and understand her complex identity. La Llorona Don’t Swim The LA River works to form a different type of spirituality through sacred humanism from the point of view of the religious trickster. These poems pose the question: where else can God be found other than church and the bible? The speaker seeks God in tattoos, in punk music, in the moshpit, in the city, and in people. She forms a new approach to tradition through the persistence of kind rebellion, her own personal version of love.

Parent, Diane. "Traduire la "dominicanidad" de Junot Diaz dans "The Sun, the Moon, the Stars" et "Wildwood"." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/23991.

Full text
Abstract:
Dominican-born writer Junot Díaz emigrated to the United States at age 7, with his mother and older brother, to join his father, who had emigrated five years earlier. The success of Díaz’s 2008 Pulitzer Prize–winning novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, and two short story collections, Drown (1996) and This Is How You Lose Her (2012), has made him an important figure in the U.S. literary world, as will be shown in this thesis. This thesis includes an analysis and commented French translation of two of his short stories, namely “The Sun, the Moon, the Stars” and “Wildwood.” It also discusses the ways in which the short story is a literary genre that suits Díaz’s text, poetics and aesthetics. “The Sun, the Moon, the Stars” and “Wildwood” are good examples of the author’s inimitable style, which is characterized by syncopated sentence rhythms and the use of Spanglish. English sentences are peppered with Spanish, which interferes with and breaks up the narration. Díaz uses Spanglish also as a language strategy that serves his political agenda, namely to affirm his Dominican roots and engage his fellow Dominican-Americans in a direct dialogue, and to remind white readers that English and Spanish influence each other in the U.S. Díaz’s language is musical and vivid, his tone, informal and conversational, and his register, sometimes colloquial—or even vulgar—and sometimes literary. Coarse and vulgar expressions are conveyors of identity and culture that punctuate the statements of Yunior, the narrator in “The Sun, the Moon, the Stars,” like a verbal tic. In “Wildwood” the cursing and swearing come more from the mouth of the furious mother of Lola, the narrator, than from the young woman herself, who seeks a life far from her mother, her home town Paterson, New Jersey, and Spanish. Translating Díaz’s language, a combination of English and a kind of Dominican-American slang, into French is challenging, especially since translators in Canada are faced with choosing between varieties of French that are either too Parisian or too Québécois.

Abstract:
The Bronx Cocked Back And Smoking is a collection of multifarious prose performances recounting the historical, personal, social, political and cultural constructs of a city birthed by violence. This body of work is accompanied by video, audio, photography, and theatre performance texts. St. Mary’s Housing project, in the Bronx, is the foundation where most of this literary work takes place. The modern day Griot (storyteller) is a Poet, guiding his audience through the social inequalities and disparities that plague St. Mary’s community. The Poet shares personal traumatic insights while simultaneously utilizing writing as a form of survival to the conditions of the Bronx. This multi-platform performance highlights the metaphorical and physical concerns with the cycle of violence. This question is answered through the Poet’s choice by selecting the pen over the gun.

Abstract:
Z důvodu špatné dostupnosti materiálu využíváme zejména příkladů sebraných A. Ramírezem a Beatriz Varelou, ačkoli používáme i naše příklady zaznamenané v Miami v září 2005.

Abstract:
This thesis first analyses the context and linguistic mechanisms of Spanglish within Chicano literature. Then the issue of multilingual translation is examined through the case study of A. Morales Reto en el paraiso. After looking into the many difficulties stemming from the translation of a Spanglish text into a third language, namely French, I will propose my own translation of the first chapter of the novel. In general, a foreignizing approach was preferred, although some complexities of Spanglish occasionally forced the translator to adopt a more domesticating approach. In sum, this dissertation endeavours to provide practical as well as theoretical answers to the challenges of translating multilingual texts.

Phillips, Rebecca K. "Spanglish as a marker of identification among Hispanics in the United States: A case study of two Tejano radio stations." Thesis, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/1911/17539.

Full text
Abstract:
Although critics believe the language variety Spanglish to be a corruption of one or both of the standard languages with which it is associated as well as a language of inadequacy spoken by the poor and uneducated, this thesis seeks to support the idea that it is used by Hispanics in the United States as a marker of identity. An examination of previous studies shows that it is not associated with a lack of linguistic ability on the part of its speakers. Demographic information provided by two Tejano stations that broadcast in Spanglish, KQQK of Houston and KXTN of San Antonio, demonstrates that listeners, when compared to the national averages among Hispanics, actually live under better socioeconomic circumstances. Interviews with radio station personnel reveal that, in their opinions, Spanglish is related to the identity of the Tejano, differentiating him or her from the Anglo as well as the recently-arrived immigrant.

Galvanized steel having a high percentage of spangle or subspangle grains oriented with the (0002) planes in paralel to the sheet surfaceshows the best paint adherence. Also it has been realized that the larger the angles between the spangle (0002) planes and the steel surface, the more prone to cracking is expected for zinc layer being subject to tensile or bending stresses. Accordingly this thesis is devoted to investigation of the following two optics: (A) Referring to various reports we first of all classified subspangles belonging to regular spangles of 1 ~ 2 cm diameter into a total of sixtypes: (1) a fern type, (2) a mirror-like type, (3) a half-fern type, (4) a rost type, (5) a feather type, and (6) a triangle type. Furthermore, we defined each type not only according to their shapes, but also according to their orientation angles between the subspangle (0002) planes and the steel surface obtained from our X-ray diffraction pole figures. We also describled each type with the color appearance observed after chemical etching. We founded that there were as much as 75% ~85% of subspangles whose orientation angles fell between 0 ~ 15°. The color description of subspangles provides us an alternative, effective and easy method for estimate of their orientation angles. (B) Having carefully compared the widths of cracking and the orientation angles of subspangles subsequent to pull or bend test, we confirmed the findings of others that the bigger the orientation angles the wider the cracking on the respective subspangles. The phenomena can be explained in terms of having a greater critical normal stress between twosubspangle grains with a larger orientation angle. We also observed some secondary cracks making a 90°to the first ones, when they were overstressed. Besides, we observed a good correlation between the surface roughness or dendritic structure and the subspangle orientation angle. In essence, the larger the orientation angle, the smoother the subspangle surface, and hence the poorer the paint adhesion. Finally it was noted that the formation of white-rust was positively related to the roughness or dendritic structure of the surface. A study was extended for the effect of Pb content on the intergranular cracking. There was a tendency of more cracking on the zinc layer when Pb exceeded 0.015%, especially after the galvanized steel was stored for a long time.

In present, the construct of vehicles or home appliances use IF steel as sheet metal, however, the production costs are very high, even with variable advanced technique to control the size of spangles. Hence, in this paper, I use different abrasive brush roller in processing of HDG in the same condition to produce steel sheets with different roughness, then ignore other possible parameters because of the similar producing condition. In this research, I focus on two main questions: Discussing the interconnection between the scale of spangles, sheet resistance, as well as wet fastness by setting the roughness as the main parameter, and studying the effect of intermetallic compound when HDG steel enters iron-aluminum phase with zinc bath in molten condition. Based on this research, I find out that roughness really gets the interconnection to the scale of spangles, sheet resistance, as well as wet fastness: With the steel rougher, the scale of spangles would be smaller, and sheet resistance as well as wet fastness show in direct proportion. In addition, I check the second question by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) and XRD (X-ray diffraction). The former points out that the scale of iron-aluminum crystallite has no correlation to the roughness of substrate; the latter can only indicate that this molten condition pushes HDG steel to enter Iron-aluminum phase rather than Iron-zinc phase. After further investigating the crystallographic plane produced in Iron-aluminum phase, this produce has no correlation to the roughness of substrate.

The purpose of this study is to observe the effects of different cooling condi-tions on the formation of the spike-like spangles, with the conditions set and samples obtained directly in the production process. The main operation parameter of this study is the volume of cooling air in No.1 and No.2 up-leg coolers. When the volume of cooling air increased from 179m3/min to 288m3/min, the length of the spike-like spangles on both sides of the steel sheet shortened, with their frequency of appearance reduced accordingly. Observations under optical micro-scope revealed that the long, rectangular parts of a spike-like spangle showed an equiaxed grain structure, while the slender, needle-like ones on the sides showed a columnar grain structure. The grain sizes of the equiaxed and columnar crystals were found to be unaffected by different cooling rates, with no significant difference in their respective elemental compositions. Micro hardness tests showed that areas of spike-like spangles were harder than those of normal ones. The main factor con-tributing to a higher hardness is the much smaller grain size of the spike-like spangle. Results from salt spray tests showed no significant difference in corrosion re-sistance between spike-like spangles and normal ones.
