Abstract:
This chapter offers a historical survey of Spanish translations of Shakespeare’s poetry, and it explores some of the aesthetic and poetic reflections that have accompanied them. Since the earliest instances, we can see a tendency for Spanish and Spanish-American translators to justify their interpretive choices and shifts on the grounds that Shakespeare is a universal poet and must be translated as such. The analysis of this recurring strategy gives us an entry into literary relations between England, Spain, and Spanish America, since the notion of Shakespeare’s universality has ties with the

Abstract:
The introduction examines the effects of the prevalent idea that civilian poets, in comparison with veteran writers, lack legitimacy in writing about war. It demonstrates that this apparent impediment in fact generated a significant civilian poetics during the Spanish Civil War and World War II. This argument is based on analysis of the work of an international set of poets writing in English, Spanish, and French who made use of self-reflexive rhetoric as they engaged with news of war: W. H. Auden, César Vallejo, Wallace Stevens, Raymond Queneau, Marianne Moore, and Gertrude Stein. After setti

Abstract:
The sea is omnipresent in the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean basin. It is an inexhaustible source of food, but also a well-traveled roadway and a means to communicate, trade with, or wage war against one’s neighbors. Perhaps because these practical meanings of the sea were so deeply embedded in daily life, the sea also had a profound religious and symbolic significance for ancient people, from the worship of sea-deities by anxious mariners to the creation of intricate literary devices based on ‘the wine-dark sea’ and concepts such as insularity. People even imagined that, at the edge of
