Abstract:
Since the discovery of thin films, it has been known that higher crystallinity demands higher temperatures, making the process inadequate for energy-efficient and environmentally friendly methods of thin film fabrication. We resolved this problem by sparking metal wires in a 0.4 Tesla magnetic field at ambient conditions under ultra-pure nitrogen flow to replace the annealing of thin films, and thus designed an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient thin film fabrication method. We employed grazing incidence X-Ray Diffraction spectroscopy to characterize crystallinity of Iron, Nickel, Copper and Tungsten thin films prepared by a sparking discharge process in the presence of 0.4 T magnetic field at an ambient temperature of 25 °C. Control experiment was conducted by sparking without a magnetic field present and using ultra-pure nitrogen flow and ambient air containing oxygen. The Iron thin film prepared in ultra-pure nitrogen flow preserved crystallinity even after one year of ageing. Nickel exhibited higher crystallinity when sparked in nitrogen gas flow than when sparked in atmospheric air and was the only element to crystalize under atmospheric air. Tungsten successfully crystalized after just 40 min of sparking and aluminium failed to crystalize at all, even after 12 h of sparking under nitrogen flow.

Abstract:
Various novel 3D micro machining technologies were researched and developed for silicon micro mechanical system fabrication. Micro EDM is one of them. The material removal mechanism is thermal sparking erosion and is completely independent with regards to the crystalline orientation of silicon, therefore there is no orientation constraint in processing the complex 3D geometry of silicon wafers. As thermal sparking implied, the process features local area high temperature melting and evaporating, and this characteristic has an adverse side-effect on the sparked surface integrity. One important concern is the generation of micro cracks, which would provide an adverse effect on the fatigue life of the micro feature element made of silicon. For this consideration, in this paper, with the experiment and SEM picture analysis approach, the author explored the micro crack generation characteristics on mono crystalline silicon wafers under micro EDM with available sparking energies and on the different crystal orientation surface machining. The generation of micro cracking is not only related with the sparking energy but also related with the crystalline orientation. The {100} orientation is the strongest surface to resist crack generation. For a strong-doped P type silicon wafer, there exists a maximum crack energy threshold. If single sparking energy is over this threshold, micro cracks unavoidably would be generated on any orientation surface. Two types of chemical etching post processes that can remove cracks on sparked surfaces are also tested and discussed.

Abstract:
Muriel Spark’s The Driver’s Seat is a radical metafictional experiment, suggesting the inexorable connections between contingency and a predetermined plot which are so common to many Sparkian novels. Following Marina MacKay’s perception that Spark’s experimental narrative operates “in the conceptual space where the more abstract preoccupations of Roman Catholic theology overlap with the metafictional and fabulist concerns of postmodernism” (2008: 506), this essay will discuss how the notion of predestination reverberates in The Driver’s Seat, not only as a remnant of Spark’s Presbyterian education but also as a postmodern re-visitation of classical tragedy in a metafictional key. Spark’s preference for predetermined plots may echo a long philosophical and theological discussion spanning many centuries about free will and predestination, particularly intense in the times of the Protestant Reformation, but it also reflects the sense of predestination as a necessary ingredient of classical tragedy. In The Driver’s Seat Spark deliberately brought to the fore some conventions of Aristotelian tragedy, although she approached them through an experimental subversion ultimately resorting to comedy and ridicule, on Spark’s own admission her weapons for the only possible art form. Our contention is that the metafictional implications of The Driver’s Seat’s prolepses undermine a Calvinist-like certainty concerning predestined salvation or damnation. By using a partial narrator only capable of producing limited accounts, Spark may be playing with an experimental and essentially postmodern interpretive openness which is in tune with the ultimate uncertainty about each individual’s eternal salvation that is commonly accepted in Catholic thought.

Abstract:
The effects of a weak magnetic field on chemical reactions are still not well understood. In our research, we used a sparking discharge process to ionize and atomize different metal wires in ambient air under usual atmospheric conditions, with and without the presence of a magnetic field. Products were collected on a glass substrate and additionally characterized for the presence of nitrogen or nitride bonding with XPS. All samples sparked with no magnetic field provided an evidence of nitride formation. Additional characterization and comparison of samples prepared inside and outside a magnetic field was performed using FTIR and collected in deionized (DI) water to investigate the influence on conductivity and pH. When the magnetic field was present during sparking discharge, a higher concentration of nanoparticles was produced.

Abstract:
Developers of Apache Spark applications can accelerate their workloads by caching suitable intermediate results in memory and reusing them rather than recomputing them all over again every time they are needed. However, as scientific workflows are becoming more complex, application developers are becoming more prone to making wrong caching decisions, which we refer to as caching anomalies , that lead to poor performance. We present and give a demonstration of Spark Caching Anomalies Detector (SparkCAD) , a developer decision support tool that visualizes the logical plan of Spark applications and detects caching anomalies.

Full text
Abstract:

Sawada, Chikako. "Muriel Spark's postmodernism." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2004. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1561/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the shifting notions of postmodernism developed through Muriel Spark’s fiction, and thereby clarifies this artist’s own postmodernism. I use Jean-François Lyotard’s definition of the notion in his The Postmodern Condition (1979), that there is no grand narrative, as my starting point, and deploy various postmodernist theories, which can illuminate Spark’s art and can in turn be illuminated by her art, in my arguments. Throughout the thesis, I focus on two of Spark’s most important themes as crucial keys to understanding her postmodernism: the theme of individual subjectivity and the theme of the interplay of life and art. The thesis begins with the claims Spark makes for her individuality and her individual art through the voice of “I”. Chapter I considers issues about being a woman and an artist, which Spark raises around the narrator-heroine of a fictional memoir, A Far Cry from Kensington (1988). Here I present this heroine as a definition of the strength of Sparkian women who liberate themselves by practicing art. Chapter II discusses Loitering with Intent (1981), a fictional autobiography of a fictional woman novelist, alongside Spark’s own autobiography and her various biographical works. This section illustrates Spark’s notion of the “author” in relation to the “work” - and an author in control in her sense - by investigating the dynamic interplay of life and art in the form of this novel. Chapter III analyses The Driver’s Seat (1970), the novel which most shockingly elucidates the postmodern condition according to Spark and demonstrates her postmodernist narrative strategies. Her concern with the crisis of the “subject” in the world in its postmodern phase is observed in the figure of the heroine, a woman who has tried and failed to be an author in control. I argue that Spark here theorises the notion of subject, by providing her own version of the psychoanalytical “death drive” and also represents the Lacanian real as the unfigurable with this figure. Chapter IV and Chapter V follow the developments of Spark’s discussion of the crisis of the “subject” in two of her later novels. Chapter IV concentrates on the theme of Otherness in Symposium (1990). Chapter V discusses Reality and Dreams (1996), in which Spark pursues the theme of excess and opens up the contradictions inherent in this notion to bring about a new philosophy of life by art as excess.

Abstract:
Mothers of Sparta is a collection of thirteen personal essays that examine place—knowing one’s place, and finding one’s place in the world. The narrative arc chronicles the narrator’s childhood, young adulthood, marriage and child rearing years, ultimately encompassing the difficulties of raising a child who, due to brain damage, faces an uncertain future. As the narrator grows older, place shifts from a concrete knowledge of the physical world around her, to learning her place within gendered and regional social constructs, and defining her place through roles such as wife, mother, student and writer. These essays are diverse in style. Woven throughout is a theme of violence, weighted with visceral language: the violence of accident and death, the violence that occurs in nature and in domestic spaces, and the violence that often goes unnoticed because we live in a violent world.

Abstract:
This document delves into the precept of unity in diversity from a musical perspective, in order to replace the timeworn aesthetic norms with ones that may induce a music befitting the fabric of our contemporary global village. It deals with the contemporary musical zeitgeist from this perspective and examines the transformations in musical substance derived from the copious changes in dissemination since the information revolution. It also presents Sparks of Union, a 20-minute composition for ten Western instruments and interactive electronics. This composition aims to focus on different musical languages in search of polarizing and uniting elements, and explores free interactions between the different musical elements. As a result it strives to create new sonorities derived from a fully democratic multicultural interaction.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis has focused on the protein spartin, which is mutated in a form of autosomal recessive hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) called Troyer syndrome. Upon commencement of this project little was known about the likely mechanism of axonopathy in spartin HSP, indeed there was considerable disagreement in the literature as to its precise subcellular localisation. However, a putative role for spartin in endocytosis was proposed due to sequence homology identified with several proteins known to function in this area. This suggested that spartin belonged to an enlarging group of HSP proteins with membrane traffic and transport-related roles. This thesis had three primary aims: to clarify the subcellular localisation of endogenous spartin, to identify proteins that interacted with spartin, and to investigate a possible functional role(s) for spartin. Spartin was found to localise predominantly in the cytoplasm, with a cystosolic pool that was recruited to endosomes. Additionally, a proportion of spartin was found in mitochondria. Furthermore, spartin was shown to undergo multiple monoubiquitination and to interact with ubiquitin, two ankyrin repeat domain-13 family members, and also with the E3 ubiquitin ligase AIP4. Functional assays suggest that spartin is an inhibitor of epidermal growth factor receptor degradation, and negatively regulates bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signalling. A putative role in BMP signalling is interesting because this pathway is emerging as an important regulator of distal axonal morphology and function, and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of another endosomal HSP protein, NIPA1. This suggests that altered BMP signalling may be a key pathological component of spartin HSP.

Abstract:
According to the previous researches, the welding frequency increases as the load impedance decreases when the narrow gap shorts out during ERW welding process. The proper welding frequency is theoretically calculated and also measured for OCTG pipe manufacturing. Also, to assure the quality of ERW tube, the spark detection device developed. According to signals from the spark detection device, there are two types of sparks found as a single-shot spark and sustainable spark. The formation of single-shot spark is too short to recognize the existence of spark with operator’s naked eyes during ERW process. Thus, the paint spraying system was used to mark the sparking location for screening at the inspection unit. Therefore, spark detecting devices (bad signal detection) are used to increase the productivity of products and improve its quality. In addition, the database server system developed according to the accumulated data can provide the cost savings and the creation of new demands.

Abstract:
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Ultra-lean combustion of GDI engine could achieve higher thermal efficiency and lower NOx emissions, but it also faces challenges such as ignition difficulties and low-speed flame propagation. In this paper, the sparked-spray is proposed as a novel ignition method, which employs the spark to ignite the fuel spray by the cooperative timing control of in-cylinder fuel injection and spark ignition and form a jet flame. Then the jet flame fronts propagate in the ultra-lean premixed mixture in the cylinder. This combustion mode is named Sparked-Spray Induced Combustion (SSIC) in this paper.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">Based on a 3-cylinder 1.0L GDI engine, a 3D simulation model is established in the CONVERGE to study the effects of ignition strategy, compression ratio, and injection timing on SSIC with a global equivalence ratio of 0.50. The results show it is easier to form the jet flame when sparking at the spray front because the fuel has better atomization and lower turbulent kinetic energy at the spray front. The jet flame will be stronger if the ignition position is further from the injector, leading to shortened combustion duration and lower CO, Soot and HC emissions, but higher NOx emissions due to the increase of combustion temperature. With the increase of compression ratio, flame propagation speed is faster, thermal efficiency is higher (46.6% at compression ratio 14), and the emissions of CO, Soot and HC are decreased significantly, but NOx emissions are increased. At the compression ratio of 14, with the advance of injection timing, the thermal efficiency increased firstly and then decreased (47.3% at injection timing -30°CA ATDC), while HC, CO, Soot and NOX emissions all decreased.</div></div>

Abstract:
Abstract An experimental investigation was performed in a premixed annular combustor equipped with multiple swirl, bluff body burners to assess the ignition probability and to provide insights into the mechanisms of failure and of successful propagation. The experiments are done at conditions that are close to the lean blow-off limit (LBO) and hence the ignition is difficult and close to the limiting condition when ignition is not possible. Two configurations were employed, with 12 and 18 burners, the mixture velocity was varied between 10 and 30 m/s, and the equivalence ratio (ϕ) between 0.58 and 0.68. Ignition was initiated by a sequence of sparks (2 mm gap, 10 sparks of 10 ms each) and “ignition” is defined as successful ignition of the whole annular combustor. The mechanism of success and failure of the ignition process and the flame propagation patterns were investigated via high-speed imaging (10 kHz) of OH* chemiluminescence. The lean ignition limits were evaluated and compared to the lean blow-off limits, finding the 12-burner configuration is more stable than the 18-burner. It was found that failure is linked to the trapping of the initial flame kernel inside the inner recirculation zone (IRZ) of a single burner adjacent to the spark, followed by localised quenching on the bluff body probably due to heat losses. In contrast, for a successful ignition, it was necessary for the flame kernel to propagate to the adjacent burner or for a flame pocket to be convected downstream in the chamber to grow and start propagating upwards. Finally, the ignition probability (Pign) was obtained for different spark locations. It was found that sparking inside the recirculation zone resulted in Pign ∼ 0 for most conditions, while Pign increased moving the spark away from the bluff-body or placing it between two burners and peaked to Pign ∼ 1 when the spark was located downstream in the combustion chamber, where the velocities are lower and the turbulence less intense. The results provide information on the most favourable conditions for achieving ignition in a complex multi-burner geometry and could help the design and optimisation of realistic gas turbine combustors.

Abstract:
Using a laser, as opposed to a conventional (electrical) spark plug, to create combustion initiating spark is potentially advantageous for several reasons: flexibility in choosing and optimizing the spark location, in particular, to move the spark away from solid heat sinks; production of a more robust spark containing more energy; and obviation of electrode erosion problems. These advantages may lead to an extension of the lean limit, an increase in engine thermal efficiency, and the concomitant benefits of reduced pollutant emissions. Presented in this paper is the design and implementation of a laser ignition system appropriate for a large bore natural gas engine. Design considerations include optimization of spark location, design of beam delivery system and optical plug, and mitigation of vibration and thermal effects. A single cylinder of a four-cylinder large bore natural gas engine is operated using laser ignition. Four different laser spark locations are examined. Comparisons are made between laser spark and conventional spark plug ignition.
