Abstract:
This monograph presents the basics of super-element modeling method of two-phase fluid flows occurring during the development of oil reservoir. The simulation is performed in two stages to reduce the spatial and temporal scales of the studied processes. In the first stage of modeling of development of oil deposits built long-term (for decades) the model of the global dynamics of the flooding on the super-element computational grid with a step equal to the average distance between wells (200-500 m). Local filtration flow, caused by the action of geological and technical methods of stimulation, are modeled in the second stage using a special mathematical models using computational grids with high resolution detail for the space of from 0.1 to 10 m and time — from 102 to 105 C. The results of application of the presented models to the solution of practical tasks of development of oil reservoir. Special attention is paid to the issue of value transfer in filtration-capacitive properties of the reservoir, with a detailed grid of the geological model on the larger grid reservoir models. Designed for professionals in the field of mathematical and numerical modeling of fluid flows occurring during the development of oil fields and using traditional commercial software packages, as well as developing their own software. May be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students studying in areas such as "Mechanics and mathematical modeling", "Applied mathematics", "Oil and gas".

Abstract:
Functional neuroimaging techniques include methods that probe various aspects of brain function and help derive models of brain organization in health and disease. These techniques can be grouped in two categories. Some are mainly based on electromagnetic signals (electroencephalography, magnetoencephalography), recording brain activity using a large number of sensors with exquisite temporal resolution (usually of the order of a kilohertz) but allowing only indirect characterization of three-dimensional brain activity by resorting to mathematical models. The second type includes different techniques (PET scan, SPECT, MRI, optical imaging) that typically assess metabolic or hemodynamic parameters, with millimeter spatial resolution and usually from the entire brain volume. However, temporal resolution is usually low because it is primarily driven by metabolic processes that unfold in several seconds or minutes. This chapter focuses on this second type, covering the contribution of brain imaging to understanding NREM sleep and REM sleep and also sleep disorders.

Abstract:
Temporal lobe epilepsy is the most frequent type of epilepsy of focal origin in adults. Electroencephalographic evaluation for surgical treatment requires accurate localization of epileptic foci. The yield of detection with scalp electrodes depends on three variables: source and extent of the epileptogenic area relative to the scalp electrodes’ position; electric field generated by the epileptiform activity and the electric vectors’ orientation; and extent of propagation of the epileptiform activity from mesial to temporal lateral regions. Recordings of epileptiform activity of presumed mesial-temporal origin should include additional electrodes such as anterior temporal or basal temporal electrodes or a subtemporal chain. Nasopharyngeal electrodes appear to yield no advantage over anterior temporal or basal temporal electrodes or a subtemporal chain and are associated with discomfort. Sphenoidal electrodes should be considered in special circumstances; reliability is improved if placed under fluoroscopy. High-density scalp recordings allow for even greater resolution and improved spatial sampling.

Abstract:
Functional brain imaging is based on a set of assumptions. A clear appreciation of those makes it possible to form reasonable opinions regarding the potential range of application and the limits of the functional neuroimaging procedures. Exposition of these basic facts and assumptions is the primary goal of this chapter. A secondary goal is the juxtaposition of the basic concepts involved in them, such as the concept of “function,” “brain mechanism,” “neuronal network,” “activity,” and “activation”; drawing, in broad outline, a description of the methods of neuroimaging, their relative spatial and temporal resolution, and the type of neurophysiological effects each of them captures and renders in images.
