Abstract:
This article provides data on distribution of two circumpolar species – twohorn sculpin Icelus bicornis and spatulate sculpin Icelus spatula in the Russian Arctic seas (Barents Sea, Kara Sea, Laptev Sea, East Siberian Sea) in the period from 2014 to 2019. The abundance of the twohorn sculpin varied from 2 to 18 ind/km2, and the biomass varied within 0.002–0.089 kg/km2. For the spatulate sculpin, these parameters were 2–21 ind/km2 and 0.002–0.699 kg/km2. The maximum and minimum values of these parameters for Icelus bicornis were recorded in the Laptev Sea, and for Icelus spatula in the East Siberian Sea. Information on the vertical spatial distribution of these species is also given, confirming the information given earlier that the spatulate sculpin occurs at shallower depths in contrast to the twohorn sculpin.

Abstract:
The peculiarities of obtaining planting material of rare representatives Drosera spatulate L. and Drosera aliciae L. using microclonal propagation in order to preserve and cultivate them in ex vitro conditions were studied. The method of sterilization of D. spatulate and D. aliciae explants with 80-90% obtaining aseptic material has been developed. The influence of different sterilization options on the development of microshoots has been studied. The best mode of sterilization is 0,1% solution of AgNO3 and 12.5% solution of H2O2. The features of organogenesis and regeneration of the whole organism from cultivated tissues and organs of Drosera L. was investigated. The effect of exogenous growth regulators at different stages of plant morphogenesis in vitro is shown. Improved conditions of rhizogenesis in vitro. It was found experimentally that MS nutrient media with the addition of 2 g∙l-1 PVP is optimal at the stage of introduction into culture in vitro D. spatulate and D. aliciae. The regeneration of microshoots of D. spatulate and D. aliciae depending on the type of explant and the composition of nutrient media was studied. Morphogenesis was most effective on nutrient media with the addition of 0.25 mg∙l-1 kinetin and on the hormone free MS media. Such cultivation conditions provided 100% regeneration of plants with a reproduction rate of 1:8. Studying the effect of cytokinins on the microclonal reproduction of D. spatulate and D. aliciae, it was found that the development and induction of multiple shoot formation in vitro is best performed on hormone free MS media. To induce the formation of the root system, it is necessary to add into MS nutrient media 0.5 mg∙l-1 IBA. According to the results of the research, a method of microclonal propagation was developed by cutting stem culture, which made it possible to obtain genetically stable, disease-free regenerating plants of D. spatulate and D. aliciae with an optimally formed root system and vegetative mass. The obtained homogeneous planting material can be used in floriculture, creation of terrariums, for pharmacological purposes and for the purpose of introduction. Primula xingshanensis, a new species of Primula endemic to Hubei Province, China, is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to two other species belonging to Primula sect. Auganthus, P. rupestris from West Hubei and South Shaanxi Provinces, and P. sinensis from Guizhou and Sichuan Provinces, but can be easily distinguished from the two by its obovate-spatulate to spatulate and pinnately lobed leaf blade, cuneate leaf base and shorter petioles that are 1.3–4.8 cm long.

Pinguicula simulans (Lentibulariaceae), a new species endemic to Sierra Madre Oriental, is described and illustrated from plants collected at Potrero Redondo, municipality of Santiago, Nuevo Léon, Mexico. Its flowers are similar to those of P. gracilis and the new species therefore belongs to Pinguicula subg. Temnoceras, sect. Microphyllum. It differs from other species in the section by the spatulate winter leaves, which are longer than wide, with a slightly recurved apex. In addition, it is distinguished by the long spatulate, ascendant or diffuse, recurved, summer leaves, which form a loose rosette, and by the calyx that has glandular pubescence on both surfaces.

Two new species of Baetis s. l. are described and illustrated based on nymphal materials. Baetis chongqingensis sp. nov. is characterized by the elongated labrum, the presence of stout setae on scape, the absence of apical scale on segment II of maxillary palp, the well-developed projection on segment II of labial palp, and the absence of chagrin and spatulate setae on abdominal terga. Baetis (Rhodobaetis) qianlei sp. nov. can be differentiated from the other species of subgenus Rhodobaetis by the number of spatulate setae on the scape and pedicel, the shape of labial palp and tergalii, and the length of paracercus.

A new species of ectoparasitic mite, Hemipteroseius vikrami n. sp. (Mesostigmata: Otopheidomenidae), collected on Dysdercus koenigii (Fabricius) in New Delhi and D. cingulatus (Fabricius) in Varanasi, India is described. It is distinguished from other species of the genus in having the dorsal shield divided, podonotal shield with nine pairs and opisthonotal shield with four pairs of setae; setae j6, s6 and Z5 with bulbose/spatulate tips; tritosternum with two short slightly barbed lacinae; venter with four pairs of sternal setae, one pair on the sternal shield and three pairs placed posterolaterally; anus terminal; one pair of preanal setae; movable digit of chelicera with two teeth distally; macrosetae on genu I–IV and femur I–II with bulbose/spatulate tip. A list of species of Otopheidomenidae with details of distribution and hosts, key to species of Hemipteroseius and comparison of morphological characters of species are also provided.

A new Asteraceae species, Ixeridium malingheense Z.Li & Q.Xu sp. nov., from Xingyi City, south-western Guizhou, China, is described and illustrated based on morphological and molecular analyses. Compared with the other species of the genus, the species is most similar to I. yunnanense in a small stature, linear-lanceolate stem leaves, and short phyllaries. However, it is easily distinguished from the latter by its smaller basal leaves 18–34 × 5–13 mm (vs. 10–25 × 5 mm), spatulate or long-spatulate (vs. elliptic, lanceolate, or oblanceolate), petioles ca. 30–55 mm (vs. 10 mm to absent), outer phyllaries 1-seriate (vs. 2-seriate, unequal), achenes smaller 2.0–3.0 × 0.5–1.0 mm (vs. 3.2 × 0.6 mm), and a flowering period of March to May (vs. June). Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ITS sequence data determined the systematic position of I. malingheense in Ixeridium.

Abstract:
The evolution of sexual secondary characteristics necessitates regulatory factors that confer sexual identity to differentiating tissues and cells. In Colias eurytheme butterflies, males exhibit two specialized wing scale types—ultraviolet-iridescent (UVI) and spatulate scales—which are absent in females and likely integral to male courtship behavior. This study investigates the regulatory mechanisms and single-nucleus transcriptomics underlying these two sexually dimorphic cell types during wing development. We show that Doublesex (Dsx) expression is itself dimorphic and required to repress the UVI cell state in females, while unexpectedly, UVI activation in males is independent from Dsx. In the melanic marginal band, Dsx is required in each sex to enforce the presence of spatulate scales in males, and their absence in females. Single-nucleus RNAseq reveals that UVI and spatulate scale cell precursors each show distinctive gene expression profiles at 40% of pupal development, with marker genes that include regulators of transcription, cell signaling, cytoskeletal patterning, and chitin secretion. Both male-specific cell types share a low expression of the Bric-a-brac (Bab) transcription factor, a key repressor of the UVI fate. Bab ChIP-seq profiling suggests that Bab binds the cis-regulatory regions of gene markers associated to UVI fate, including potential effector genes involved in the regulation of cytoskeletal processes and chitin secretion, and loci showing signatures of recent selective sweeps in a UVI-polymorphic population. These findings open new avenues for exploring wing patterning and scale development, shedding light on the mechanisms driving the specification of sex-specific cell states and the differentiation of specialized cell ultrastructures.

Larsen-syndrome is a rare genetic skeletal dysplasia belonging to the group of actin-binding filamin B associated diseases. The features include congenital dislocations of the large joints, scoliosis and cervical kyphosis, short, broad, spatulate distal phalanges, and distinctive craniofacies. Diagnosis is based on clinical and radiographic findings and confirmed by molecular genetic testing. The authors have performed filamin B molecular genetic analysis since 2005 and have found several cases with unusual phenotypes since. This case report presents the diagnostic difficulties of a 30-year-old woman, who was operated several times with congenital hip dislocations and foot deformities. The craniofacial features, short, broad, spatulate fingers, scoliosis and cervical kyphosis directed diagnosis towards Larsen-syndrome and molecular genetic analysis confirmed a previously-described heterozygous missense mutation (c.G679A). They conclude that genetic analysis performed in time would prevent additional superfluous long diagnostic procedures in patients with rare diseases and would ensure adequate supportive therapy and management of the symptoms. Sampling in shallow sediments of Bay of Biscay up to 70 m has yielded three undescribed capitellids. Mediomastus biscayensis sp. nov. is distinct from its congeners by a combination of characters that includes the presence of bilimbate thoracic capillaries, thoracic and abdominal hooks similar in shape and length and distinct Methyl Green staining pattern with chaetigers 5–9 having sparse green speckles and chaetigers 10–11 with dense green speckles. Notomastus hutchingsae sp. nov. is a very distinct Notomastus species because of the presence of two achaetous segments in the thoracic region and the shape of the thoracic segments with a constriction after segment 4, and after segment 6 segments becoming distinctly separated and bi-annulated. The newly proposed Peresiella ellae sp. nov. is most similar to its Atlantic congener P. spathulata Ewing, 1984 by the absence of eyespots and presence of modified spatulate chaetae on chaetiger 4–11, but differing by the presence of two peristomial annuli, shape of thoracic and abdominal segments, number of spatulate chaetae per tori and dentition of hooded hooks. All species are fully described, illustrated and commented on according to their closest congeners.

According to the collector’s information given on the labels, the plant was successfully recollected and is known to occur only in Balneário Hermenegildo, Santa Vitória do Palmar, Rio Grande do Sul, southernmost Brazil. Additionally, conservation status and ecological information about the new species are provided.

The puerulus of Panulirus guttatus is described from specimens collected at Florida reefs. Preliminary examination by scanning electron microscopy of the spatulate antennal tip of a P. guttatus puerulus revealed no qualitative features different than those previously described for the tapered antennal tip of P. cygnus. The unique combination of morphological characters of the P. guttatus puerulus requires minor adjustment to a recently proposed evolutionary classification of Panulirus based on pueruli.

The head of the spermatozoon in eutherian mammals contains a nucleus, acrosomal cap and cytoskeleton. It is generally spatulate, paddle-shaped or pear-shaped, but in most murid rodents it is hook-shaped with the anterior region of the nucleus surrounded by an elaborate acrosome and an extension of the subacrosomal cytoskeleton as a perforatorium. This type of spermatozoon is present in Australasian Rattus, together with several other New Guinean genera. However, in most Australasian hydromyine rodents a far greater complexity of structural organisation of the sperm head has evolved in which two further elaborate processes extend from its upper concave surface. These processes contain a huge extension of the cytoskeleton within which filamentous actin is present. By contrast, the form of the sperm head in a few species of Pseudomys, Notomys and Solomys is highly divergent and is either truncated, spatulate or pear- shaped. The evolutionary trends of change in sperm head shape are discussed and it is suggested that the falciform sperm head with the two extra processes in most of the hydromyine rodents is one of the most morphologically complex sperm head types to have evolved in eutherian mammals; it contains a far more extensive development of the cytoskeleton than that of any other mammalian spermatozoon.

The puerulus of Panulirus guttatus is described and compared with that of P. argus, a sympatric species. Comparative morphological data show that the former has a more specialized form than the latter and hence is more recent in evolutionary terms. Features characterizing the puerulus of P. guttatus are its relatively large size, long spatulate antennae, and well developed sternal spines. The possible adaptive value of the long spatulate antennae for selection of specific substrata and/or navigation through inshore waters is discussed in relation to the ecology of the juvenile and adult phases. Pueruli of P. guttatus are not found in the surface collectors, resembling marine vegetation, used to monitor the influx of pueruli of P. argus into coastal waters on the Caribbean coast of Mexico. Moreover, small juveniles of P. guttatus are never found in the natural habitat of those of P. argus, and large juveniles and adults of P. guttatus seem restricted to the shallow coral reef habitat, in contrast to similar phases of P. argus, which occupy a vast array of habitats and depths throughout their benthic life. It is hypothesized that the pueruli of both species settle in different habitats, which would partly explain their sharing of the same geographic distribution.

AbstractMartin's (1946) seed classification system has 10 types based on embryo and endosperm characteristics and two additional types based on seed size: dwarf (0.3–2.0 mm) and micro ( ≤ 0.2 mm). He listed 17 families and 12 genera (in five other families) as having dwarf seeds. Our recent discovery of morphophysiological dormancy in dwarf seeds of several taxa ofCampanulaceaeand one ofGentianaceaeprompted an evaluation of dwarf seeds. Martin's paper contains 37 families with one to several small (0.3–2.0 mm) seeded species that he did not list as being dwarf. Comparison of Martin's dwarf families and the 37 small-seeded non-dwarf families revealed no consistent differences between the two groups in endosperm texture, seed-coat anatomy, embryo morphology, class of seed dormancy or phylogenetic position. Also, Martin's dwarf seeds include a variety of embryo morphologies. Consequently, we have revised Martin's key to seed types. The dwarf category has been removed and the micro category replaced by ‘undifferentiated’ to reflect the state of the embryo in fresh seeds. Abstract In this study, the morphology, anatomy, pollen morphology, leaf and seed micromorphology and karyology of the Turkish endangered endemic Physoptychis haussknechtii were investigated in detail for the first time. The species was studied in terms of detailed morphology. Basal leaves are narrowly spatulate and cauline leaves are linear to oblanceolate; both leaves are covered with flattened stalked five-armed trichomes. Raceme length was found to be up to 6 cm and 9 cm in the flowering and fruiting stages, respectively. Sepals are linear-oblong, rarely elliptic with obtuse to subacute apex. Petals are spatulate with emarginate apex. Some morphological characteristics such as dimensions of cauline leaves and ovary and length of pistil were measured for the first time. In an anatomical study, root, stem, basal leaf and cauline leaf were examined. The anatomical results showed that the plants have secondary growth in roots, primary growth in stems, amphistomatic and equifacial basal and cauline leaves with anisocytic stomata. Pollen grains are radial symmetrical, isopolar and tricolpate. The ratio of polar axis to equatorial diameter is 1.16, and pollen shape is subprolate. Exine sculpturing is reticulate under light microscope and scanning electron microscope. Seeds are obovatesuborbicular, compressed and pale brown. The chromosome number of P. haussknechtii was defined to be 2n=16. The karyotype formula of P. haussknechtii consists of five metacentric chromosome pairs and three submetacentric chromosome pairs.

During regular surveys of Lepidoptera in the coastal dune North Holland Dune Reserve, we observed larval cases and feeding traces typical for Coleophoridae on wild strawberry (Fragaria vesca L., Rosaceae). The spatulate or pistol shape of the cases excluded Coleophora violacea (Ström, 1783) and C. potentillae Elisha, 1885. According to the literature, C. albicostella (Duponchel, 1842), very rare in The Netherlands, was the only Coleophora species known to create spatulate cases on this host. We collected larval cases for DNA analysis on the larvae and for rearing, which revealed that none of the collected larvae belong to the Coleophoridae previously recorded feeding on this host, but a mixture of three other Coleophora species. We found that early instar larvae of C. lutipennella (Zeller, 1838) and C. flavipennella (Duponchel, 1843), normally feeding on oaks (Quercus spp., Fagaceae) only, may be found feeding on F. vesca in the fall. We also found that C. gryphipennella (Hübner, 1796), abundant on Rose (Rosa spp., Rosaceae) in the coastal dunes of The Netherlands, regularly feeds on F. vesca and rearing experiments proved that it can complete its larval stage on F. vesca. We therefore conclude that Fragaria is a new host genus for C. gryphipennella. After reviewing all the C. albicostella records from The Netherlands, we conclude that it is a very rare species, likely restricted to the southernmost provinces. None of the confirmed records are from reared specimens. The host range of C. albicostella in literature is possibly overestimated and may not even include Fragaria.

Nitraria komarovii Iljin &amp;amp; Lava ex Bobrov is newly reported for the flora of Kazakhstan. The two new records extend the range of this species eastward from its previously known range in Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. A full description of N. komarovii is given for the first time, along with illustrations, notes on its taxonomy, and a distribution map. Nitraria komarovii is most similar to N. schoberi L., but differs in its habit, narrower and longer, linear-spatulate, greenish-yellow leaves, which gradually narrow to the base, more subtle inflorescences, size of the stone, petal, stamen, and pistil, and color of the fruit.

Abstract:
Aim: To evaluate the influence of spatulas on resin composite color stability, and characterize the surface of both the spatulas and the resin composites before and after manipulation. Materials and Method: Discs (ø6 mm x 2 mm) of suprananofilled resin composite (Palfique LX5/Tokuyama) and nanohybrid resin (Empress Direct/Ivoclar Vivadent) were fabricated. They were divided into groups (n=10), and manipulated with different spatulas: non-manipulated (control), metal spatulas (Almore Millennium/ Golgran, Almore #3/ Quinelato, LM Arte Modella/ Quinelato), or plastic spatulas (Jon). Manipulation involved lightly pressing the spatula 50 times against the resin composite on waterproof paper. Color was analyzed at three time points: immediately, after finishing and polishing, and after 24-hour immersion in distilled water, with CIELab* parameters, ΔEab, ΔE00, and ΔWID. Spatulas and resins were submitted to micromorphological and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopic (EDS) analysis. Generalized linear models or Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests (α=5%) were applied. Results: Resin color changed after manipulation with a metal spatula, but there was no significant difference in ΔEab and ΔE00 for the resin composites according to the spatula (p&gt;0.05). The suprananofilled resin varied more than the nanohybrid resin over time (p&lt;0.05). Abrasive wear was observed on the spatulas after manipulating the resin composites, with greater wear for the spatulas used with suprananofilled resin. EDS showed different spatula and resin composite compositions. Conclusions: Metal spatulas influenced resin composite color stability, with greater color change for suprananofilled resin. The spatulas exhibited abrasive wear, attributable to the difference in hardness between the spatulas and the resin composites.
