Full textIn the paper ethnic identity, concepts of ethnic identity and strategies of those concepts in Lithuanian Exile are analysed. Usually in Lithuanian Exile surveys ethnic and national identities are handled as systematized and relatively stable forms of nationalism. In this paper ethnic identity is analysed on the basis of internal contradictions within diaspora and power relations (on the basis of gender, racial, ethnic groups’ relations). In the paper we predicate that forms and practices of national collectivity are and can not only be transferred to emigrant community but are constantly transformed while changing boundaries and carrying other shifts in relation to other ethnic communities, and is a part of political formation of identity. In ethnic identity surveys collective identity and ethnic culture were handled as coherent unity, whereas ethnic identity is a part of constantly constructed and shifting processes. Hence in the topic not acculturation theory is chosen either but broader analytical model – through discursive practices, taking into account newspapers’ analysis and organizational network in diaspora. Empirical material in the survey chosen is diaspora press and institutions in diaspora. Analytical model – newspapers’ content analysis, analysis of strategies, making presumption that linguistic meanings and structural realization are bound together, analysis of practises of implementation – through diaspora institutions and family model. Tasks in the paper – to... [to full text]

Full textLithuania just like other countries of Europe is a multinational country. It’s been a long time this country is occupied by people of diverse culture, religion and customs. It especially can be noticed in the beginning of the 20th century after the First World War in Europe when the greatest empires of that time have collapsed. At that time when Lithuania was independent in 1923 there were over 2 million residents in the country according to the universal data compilation (excluding the city of Vilnius and Klaipėda) and 3,2 % of all population were polish people. Polish press that was issued between the World Wars can be firmly called the expression of polish national minority’s attitude and opinion. The investigation of the polish press provides an opportunity to take a look at the country’s inner political, economic and social evolution as well as the relationship between Lithuania and Poland the way polish nation saw all of it. We should emphasize in advance that this attitude has always been negative. The problem of Vilnius’ territory at that time was one of the most significant questions of Lithuanian foreign policy. Polish press has always expressed a huge attention concerning Lithuanian and Polish mutual relationship and always was supporting the Polish side. Their opinion was not positive regarding the fact that Lithuania has denied the projects of P. Hymans. Lithuania has lost much more than it has won because of that – polish people thought. The territory of Vilnius... [to full text]

Full textInverted commas are punctuation marks that have been subject to little research and cause difficulties not only for authors and editors, but also for readers. The use of inverted commas in today’s press is really abundant, therefore raising the question as to whether their use is always reasonable. This work aims to discuss the functions of inverted commas and on this basis to identify the validity of the use of inverted commas in the dailies of Lithuania, the press of Lithuanian immigrants abroad, and magazines in popular scientific sub-style. In addition, it was sought to identify statistically whether there was any difference in the unjustified use of inverted commas between the Lithuanian press and magazines in popular scientific sub-style and those in the Lithuanian language abroad and whether functional style has any impact on this. The justified use of inverted commas includes direct speech, quotes and variations of quotes, names, and substandard lexis. The author may make a free choice of whether to use inverted commas in the cases of euphemisms, irony, and rarely used words. Research of the press shows that inverted commas are unjustifiably used not only for words that are used in a figurative sense and have the figurative meaning recorded in the dictionary, phraseological units, sayings, various tropes (metaphors, metonymies, and personifications), newly introduced words together with the suggested versions for standard usage, and surnames, but also for words with... The goals of the thesis are: to discover the source quoting practices in the XXI century Lithuanian periodical print media as well as to discover whether the selection of quotations in the texts of print media can influence the public opinion about the quoted sources. The major tasks of the thesis are: to analyze how the selected quotations in periodical print media can influence the public opinion as well as to analyze if the quoting peculiarities are different in diverse periodical print media. Qualitative method of content analysis and a comparative analysis were chosen for this Master’s thesis as the best methods revealing the coded meanings and the possible manipulations in the text. Using a qualitative method of content analysis together with a comparative analysis the thesis comes to a conclusion that positive or negative public opinion about the quoted sources can be formed in the XXI century Lithuanian periodical print media using the information provided by other sources or the words of the source himself/ herself. Such an opinion can be vastly different in diverse periodical print media because of the attitude and opinion in the editorial office as well as because of the ideology and the worldview of the media owner. Source quoting can also be influenced by external factors, such as advertisements ordered in the... [to full text]

This work is as if the therapeutic art for oneself in which multi-layer compositions, revealing the history of inner state, were created by the means of factures and the rhythmic of lines, with the help of Adobe Photoshop CS4 programme. The aim of the art therapy is to analyze your own works of art and to help yourself to develop as a personality. Full textThe Aim of the research is to define and analyse works of Lithuanian abstract painting during the Soviet period by establishing and comparing the diversity of criticism and practices of abstract art in Lithuania over several decades (from the end of the 1950s to the 1980s). In this thesis abstract paining is treated as a radical artistic reaction in Lithuania in terms of its theoretical and historical characteristics, and the general artistic context during the Soviet period is analysed in terms of socio-political issues. This is a study of the most celebrated examples of Western European art (also American art) presenting the most recent tendencies that developed out of them and juxtaposing it with the Central European culture (as the area of Soviet influence). Western European culture and its artistic movements were a complete opposition to the artificially built Eastern Block during the Soviet period. The forced separation of this period defined its unique qualities that found one expression in Central Europe and a different one in countries occupied by the Soviets (eg. in Lithuania); it also formed the position of freedom of an alternative art. Whereas in the West abstraction, in its own time, was the great boom of modernism because it freed painting from the traditional language of ‘representation’ and illustration, in Lithuania, in its local context, it had more functions: it was considered to be the great achievement of late modernism that helped to discover newer than... Full textOld and changing Lithuanian history left a deep imprint in the culture of our country. The culture became a resting pole in the most difficult times of our history. The question of the Lithuanian culture development became an important question in our society. This Master thesis „The image of culture and heritage in the Lithuanian media“ analyzes the themes of culture and heritage as well as their portrayal in the Lithuanian media. The themes of culture an heritage are analyzed in periodicals, internet sites as well as in Lithuanian televisions. Using the content analysis method the development of Lithuanian culture life is analyzed in the internet site “Delfi” rubric “Kultūros parkas”. In order to create the image of culture and heritage it is important to define the definitions of culture and heritage. There are a number of definitions of the two concepts in literature. The concept of culture is one of the most difficult words. The many definitions of culture reveal the importance of human existence as well as the human worldview. Human beings create culture and trough it they find a sense of life. The contemporary cultural change process is influenced by the mass culture invasion. This way culture gains a number of different forms of expression. Mass media is quickly transforming. Information technologies provided new opportunities for its development. Mass media has important influence in forming the worldview of the audiences. Thus, it is important to analyze the... [to full text]

Full textIn Lithuania the number of children is decreasing steadily but the number of magazines for children is increasing. According to the number of such publications, Lithuania is getting closer to those European countries whose population is tenfold bigger. Therefore for publishers it becomes relevant to encourage readers’ loyalty and attract new readers by using various means. Such struggle for readers can be called hunt for readers. If we considered that magazines are one kind of items, then there are many marketing and management theories created about encouragement of their sale. However circulation of magazines for children is not determined only by rules of marketing theory. Success of hunt for readers is more conditioned by readers’ loyalty programmes implemented by communication means. In this work my aim is to analyze what communication means are used in Lithuanian magazines for children to retain the present readership and new readership who were hunted. Theoretical part of a work reviews how magazines for children changed in their content and purpose in the present world of globalization and consumer society. The appearance of children as an individual group of consumers is discussed further. In consumer society commercialization affects children as well, thus the present generation of children makes decision when choosing items that are produced for them. Their opinion on choosing press publication plays the main role, therefore publishers direct means for hunting... [to full text]

Full textThe society is changing its habits to use the computers and the internet both in Lithuania and in the worldwide. The print newspapers and magazines do not want to lose their readers which are more and more tended to search the information on the internet. It is one of the reasons why the print media – the print newspapers and magazines converges with the internet. The print media has to search and to find the new ways to reach the audience. The second reason of the print newspapers and magazines convergence with the internet is the hyper competition in the mass media market. The purpose of this paper is to understand how the periodic press – the print newspapers and the magazines in this case – converge with the internet. The practical background is to check how the process of the convergence is working on the one of the biggest and influential Lithuanian print newspaper “Lietuvos rytas” and on the one of the biggest and most influential print newspaper of the United States of America – „The New York Times“. The statistical data, public surveys in Lithuania and in the United States of America, content analysis, comparison of the documents, the books and the articles from the newspapers, scientific journals and other internet resources has proven, the most distinctive today‘s interaction between the traditional print media instruments and the internet – the majority of Lithuanian and world periodical press, such as the print newspapers and magazines, have their own internet... Full textThe aim of this research is to analyze ethnic topics of Lithuanian press. The objective of the research is to examine in what forms and how ethnic intolerance is constructed in printed and Internet media texts through representation of topics, problems, named causers of the problems and their causality (i.e. by introducing/presenting explanations of causes of the problems). Therefore, the main problem of this study is the assessment of the concept of ethnic intolerance and measurement of ethnic intolerance in media discourse. The main body of empirical data was collected during the qualitative research of printed and Internet media, which consisted of two parts: (1) media content analysis and (2) structured interviews with experts (politicians, officials, representatives of ethnic minorities, and journalists). The findings of the research of ethnic intolerance content in Lithuanian media reveals that topics (problems) of interethnic relations in Lithuanian press are mostly interrelated with economical and political issues and less with cultural and psychological causality aspects. Each ethnic or religious group – Roma, Jews, Polish, Russians, Muslims and immigrants – is associated with specific problems in the Lithuanian press. No aggressive forms of ethnic intolerance (incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence) were found in the content of Lithuanian press. The most common manifestations of ethnic intolerance in Lithuanian press were hate speech, harassment, subtle... [to full text]

Full textMass media transmits news to a large number of people. Mental illness is one of the most sensitive topics nowadays and it is being portrayed extensively. The role of the media is influencing public opinion about mental illness. At least 60% of the world population is affected by various issues of psychological disorders. Those types of illnesses bring a lot of stigma, shame, and myths to most people. This is being achieved through various media aspects, such as framing and cultivation. The basis of framing theory is that the media focuses attention on certain events and then places them within a field of meaning. The media draws the public attention to certain topics, including mental illness, frame in which the news is presented is a choice made by journalists. A frame refers to the way media and reporters organize and present the events. To illustrate, mental illness topics may be exploited and sensationalized. The mentally-ill would be compared as depraved, demented, or violent people. On another hand, cultivation theory studies how exposure to the world of television contributes to conceptions that viewers have about the real world. Often television stories provide a dominant set of cultural beliefs, values, and practices. For example, public opinion polls have shown that most people who watch television report negative views about the mentally ill. There is definitely the stigma of a mental disorder, but it is very much emphasized by the popular media and that only... [to full text]

Full textThis paper work deals with the content analysis in order to find out what social image of communities is formed in the press. In addition to this, an activity research has been carried out with a view to changing social image of X community. The following hypothesis were made: 1. Presumably, the press presents a diverse image (both „expectant“ and „capable“) of community, reflecting insufficiently meaningful attitude of society towards the community, its activities and influence on social, economical, environmental, educational and cultural sectors. 2. Presumably, if the community purposefully cooperates with the press, there is a possibility of changes in image (from „expectant” to „capable”). Research object. Influence of the press on developing a social image of a community as „capable” or „expectant” institution. Research subject. Peculiarities of social image of a community and opportunities of its development in the press. Based on the statement of the research object and subject, the aim of the research was stated – to find out what image of community is made by the press (community as ,,capable” or ,,expectant” institution) and to reveal opportunities of developing image of a community. His stay in the Iberian Peninsula is the more obscure side of his artistic activity. On that period, I tried to add new data to get a clearer view of his experience in Spain. At the same time, these new findings about his trip to Spain allowed revision of his catalog and pictorial activity. This painter, already indicated by Vasari as a Florentine artist who made his fortune abroad, become a classic example of how an artist moving between two countries could be a bridge between two very different schools of painting: the splendid season of the International Gothic of Valencia and the Florentine late Gothic painting. Precisely, the charm of Starnina lies on his capacity to connect two very different artistic worlds: this is a painter who influenced the international Gothic style in the city of Turia and the gothic developments in his native Florence.

Full textThe main purpose of this study is to investigate and describe the differences between the fifth-century city states of Athens and Sparta. The approach I use is that of altérité (“otherness”). I look in particular at four of the most important social phenomena: women, slaves, the army and the political structures. In these respects there are extensive differences between the two city states: Athens acquired its slaves through buying them or as spoils of war over time and on an individual basis; Sparta conquered and enslaved a whole nation, the Messenians, early on to serve permanently as their slaves. Athenian women enjoyed no social or legal freedom or rights; Spartan women enjoyed all these rights and could own and inherit property and goods. In Athens, since the time of Themistocles the fleet was regarded as much more important than the infantry; Sparta had very early on developed a professional infantry which was regarded as the best right through the Greek-speaking world. Athens started changing its constitution at a relatively late stage, but once started, continued to work on it until they attained an early form of democracy; Sparta never developed beyond the monarchical stage, but did adapt it to suit their needs. The second purpose of this study is to discover and attempt to explain why the above-mentioned differences are so great. The point here is not so much that Athens was the model city state which everybody tried to emulate, but rather that Sparta was the city state which was significantly different from any of the others.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The emergence of low cost airlines (LCAs) has attracted attention from passengers, competitors, the public, and researchers alike. It seems prodigious that LCAs prosper in today's time of economic downturn and are therefore able to counter the industry's trend. lATA's member airlines have accumulated losses of $31 billion since the beginning of the new millennium. Furthermore, industry icons such as American Airlines and British Airways are fighting for survival while some, namely Air Canada, are on the edge of bankruptcy: a fate which others, like Sabena, have not been able to escape. However, the low cost business model has triumphantly entered the aviation market since the deregulation of the markets in the U.S. in 1978. Low cost airlines like Southwest Airlines and Ryanair not only achieve double-digit profit margins, but also have the highest market capitalisation of the industry. This thesis examines the reason for the success of LCAs in the U.S. and EU. LCAs operate with a much lower cost base than most carriers, especially the major hut-and-spoke (H&S) airlines. The low cost business model aims at increasing both aircraft and staff productivity. It also simplifies the sequence of operations workflow and pricing structure. The thesis gives special consideration to the cost structure of LCAs. The advantages of LCAs lie within the areas such as labour, seat density, and distribution. The second objective of this thesis is to evaluate the development of LCAs and consider the implications for the European transport industry. Whereas American LCAs have operated for more than twenty-five years, the boom of their European counterparts did not commence until the end of the 1990s. Ryanair and easyJet have growth rates of more than thirty percent. The author agrees with the expectations of aviation experts that LCAs will grow until they serve approximately a quarter of the market; hence, the business model of low cost is sustainable. However, only three to four low cost airlines will survive the fierce competition in Europe.
