Full textSpatial homogeneity of rainfall-runoff model parameters can be a practical and valuable solution in order to assess water availability of a region. Hydrological simulation is indeed an handy tool but it is critical as it usually requires some degree of calibration. Calibration of spatially distributed models, that are particularly useful to describe the variability of physical processes that play a role in runoff generation, is challenging because of the high number of involved parameters. But some parameters can be homogeneous in space, therefore allowing one to reduce their total amount when multiple basins are considered. This assumption is verified on a statistical ground, making use of an MCMC algorithm to assess the parameter uncertainty; as a result the parameter distributions are with varying degrees comparable on the different catchments. When one wants to simulate the hydrological response of ungauged catchments, the hypothesis of spatial homogeneity of parameters has even more relevance; a long regionalization technique is usually applied, but we propose a cross-calibration procedure to be used at regional level. With this procedure model parameters are calibrated making use of hydrological information coming from gauged basins that are more similar to the site of interest. We want to analyze the trade-off between assuming the parameters homogeneous in space and adding new information as the cross-calibration evolves. Results show that the cross-calibration is a process well worth using; in validation in fact a good agreement is reached between observed and simulated discharges.
CALEGARI, ELENA. "La distanza conta: Tre elaborati in Economia Spaziale." Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/12222.
Full textWaldo Tobler, with his first law of geography, stated “Everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than distant things" (Tobler, 1970). If it was certainly true in 1970, this belief is called into question in an era of development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). In the debate over globalization processes, several scholars and journalists argue indeed that, with the increasing speed of telecommunications, physical distance is losing its explanatory power as determinant of socio-economical relationships (Cairncross, 2001; Friedman, 2005). This dissertation aims to give a contribution to this debate, partially answering to the broad question “Does distance still matter?" and to draw possible policy implications. The purpose is to show the role of geographical distance in three different economic environments, characterized by diversified size of the unit of analysis. Results suggest that, even if at a global scale improvements in ICTs have changed the individual perception of the distance as deterrent in interactions, geographical space still maintains its relevance in defining local socio-economic relationships, increasing the role of cities and regions as the core of most of economic activities.

Full textThe post-disaster reconstruction of territories hit by an environmental disaster further stresses the existing social polarizations and the latent conflicts within the areas where the event takes place. Through a comparison between two case studies, we hypothesize that the investigation of the ways social actors move across the city allows us to understand how people return to “normality” when forced to re-organize their lives in the post-disaster phase. In particular, we address the nature of those trajectories which determine an increase of vulnerability. Having explored the acceleration of urban dynamics led by the territorial concentration of financial capital, the rise of real estate demand, the implementation of new (public and private) political strategies, we argue that it is crucial to evaluate the extent to which the aforementioned determinants affect the lives of individuals, communities, and cities. We additionally hypothesize that the comprehension of the socio-spatial vulnerabilization processes, experienced by some social groups, is necessary to identify the reasons and factors behind their production. Through the use of categories developed by the Socio-Political Ecology of Disaster, we focus on the different stages of the post-disaster reconstruction in two contexts: L’Aquila in Italy (earthquake on April 6, 2009) and Constitución in Chile (earthquake and tsunami on February 27, 2010). We compare political strategies, conflicts and public and private interventions in order to put emphasis on the subjective experiences of those who are directly affected by the urban changes brought by the reconstruction. If disaster stem from macro and micro dynamics (namely the interaction among socio-economic structure, political transformation, and subjective experiences), a multi-scalar investigation is required. The latter, aimed at evaluating the exclusion and marginalization of and within cities, permits to “symbolically” move from the analysis of the planning (macro) factors to the subjective experiences of the individuals hit by disasters.

Full textThe research focuses on Machiavelli’s conception of imitation, as shown in various writings anteres perditas and post res perditas. I have combined two approaches: a philological andphilosophical one – in the interpretation of Machiavelli’s texts and of the relevant ancient sources –and a historical one, in the reconstruction of the different contexts in which Machiavelli foundhimself writing. The first substantial aim of the dissertation is to demonstrate how and why Machiavelli define animitation radically practical and critical. The second issue of my research is the object of imitationitself, namely the Romans and their political constitution. On one side, Machiavelli’s investigationof constitutional forms transcends the constitution itself, including wider institutions such aslanguage and religion as well as orders, (political, civil and military institutions); on the other sidehis investigation never endeavors to achieve a balance of powers, but moves continuously fromsituations of conflict. My research concludes with the assessment of a third substantial issue: the plurality of institutionalparadigms. Following Machiavelli to the letter, I show how his entire body of work is characterizedby the methodological intention of moving “from a long experience with modern things and acontinuous reading of ancient ones”. Therefore, together with a diachronic imitation that seeksmodels for the present through a critical juxtaposition with the past, a different kind of comparisonemerges: a spatial or, more appropriately, a geographical outlook

Full textSeveral theories focus on the links between crime and specific characteristics of places and communities. However, only a few applied studies explicitly purport that contextual factors may combine in determining crime risk and that their criminogenic influences may operate at different geographical scales. This study aims to investigate how certain features of the urban landscape (micro-level) interact with each other, as well as with demographic, economic and social characteristics of the surrounding neighbourhoods (meso-level), to determine spatial vulnerability to crime and, ultimately, the likelihood of a criminal event. This study conducts a spatial crime risk assessment for robberies and violent crimes in two large urban areas: Milan, Italy and Iztapalapa, Mexico. The case studies are focused on two very different countries, which allows for both the assessment of the influence of broader contextual effects (macro-level) and to test certain theoretical assumptions outside the Anglo-Saxon environment. The analysis is grounded in the Risk Terrain Modeling approach. However, in contrast to previous applications, the analysis in this study relies on a multi-level regression model including interaction terms. The study also proposes innovative methods through which to display and communicate its findings. Overall, the results demonstrate that contextual factors measured at different geographical scales interact significantly among them to determine crime risk. This finding suggests combining inputs from different theories in order to understand the dynamics behind crime occurrence. Furthermore, the proposed method generally allows us to better predict the locations of future crimes and enables the generation of more precise risk narratives to inform policies and interventions.

Full textThis doctorate risultes from a research on works. Among the bulk of articles the author published over the last fifteen years, this choice may be considered as an excursion into the italian twentieth century art (novecento), dialectically seen between progress and tradition. Some chapters display pure research work and supply utmost new information that may help to rectify historical errors (see, for instance, pages concerning fontana and spatialism); others try to introduce new ways of reading works of art (see pages pages about marinetti, de chirico, sironi and the relationship between art and fascism); others constitute a clarifing pedagogic publishing on mouvements and artists whose works have been "revisited" by the author (see pages on manzoni, scuola romana, arte povera, corrente); others, the fruit of daily frequentations of a militant critic, stand rather on the side of an indispensables chronical for the use of future historians and critics (see pages on rotella, dorazio, paladino and "meteric choices") these chapters rveal relevant facts but also supply explication of "clefts" without which understanding of "how the house was built" would be difficul to catch, the field of this research being subject to number of potential contradiction owing to this "history in progress" and the author being, more over, directely committed to this history as a militant critic. It becomes than evident that number of his assesments are to be read as personal opinions. Writing the history of contemporary art implies taking risks, because of a lack of historical distance and because of the complexity of history in the making
