Abstract:
AbstractIndividual-level variation is a recurrent issue in variationist sociolinguistics. One current approach recommends addressing this via mixed-effects modeling. This paper shows that a closely related model with fixed effects for individual speakers can be directly estimated using Goldvarb. The consequences of employing different approaches to speaker variation are explored by using different model selection criteria. We conclude by discussing the relation of the statistical model to the assumptions of the research design, pointing out that nonrandom selection of speakers potentially viol

This article shows that Thomas More’s Fortune Verses present a three-way dialectical consideration of how best to live one’s life in the world controlled by Fortune. The poem is shown to progress from speaker to speaker in its several parts, in order to present an increasingly accurate understanding of the person of Fortune and her relationship to human life. The article also provides analysis of each portion of the poem, points out the issues raised by the various speakers from part to part, and indicates the persuasive argument the poem as a whole offers to its readers. The conversations had neither, one, or both speakers using profanity and consisted of same- or mixed-gender dyads. A novel Discriminative Vector Quantization method for Speaker Identification (DVQSI) is proposed, and its parameters selection is discussed. In the training mode of this approach, the vector space of speech features is divided into a number of regions. Then, a Vector Quantization (VQ) codebook for each speaker in each region is constructed. For every possible combination of speaker pairs, a discriminative weight is assigned for each region, based on the region's ability to discriminate between the speaker pair.
