AbstractRecent research has been concerned with whether speech accommodation is an automatic process or determined by social factors (e.g. Trudgill 2008). This paper investigates phonetic accommodation in New Zealand English when speakers of NZE are responding to an Australian talker in a speech production task. NZ participants were randomly assigned to either a Positive or Negative group, where they were either flattered or insulted by the Australian. There is a relatively stable period in child L 1 acquisition during which surface subjects can be omitted. This period is also characterized by the absence of modals and expletives. With the emergence of modals and expletives, absent subjects disappear. This sequence has been attributed to the constraints of Universal Grammar (UG), a parameterized system with various settings depending on the language. Adopting the analytic method of critical discourse analysis, this study explores, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the quotation patterns in two ideologically opposed newspapers in Taiwan, namely the pro-unification United Daily News and the pro-independence Liberty Times. Complements (*The belief in Santa is greater than the one in Elvis) are disallowed, in contrast to adjuncts (The vase in the bedroom is nicer than the one in the kitchen).
