This paper explored the application of three widely utilized correlation coefficients - Pearson, Spearman, and Kendall in the context of financial data. The Pearson correlation coefficient, Spearman rank correlation coefficient, and Kendall's tau are extensively examined in capital market analyses for their ability to capture relationships between two or more financial variables such as investment funds rankings by different criteria (returns, risk, costs, etc.), market portfolio returns, stock exchange indexes and interest rates. For each coefficient, a hypothetical example was provided. Firs

Herein, we propose a Spearman rank correlation-based screening procedure for ultrahigh-dimensional data with censored response cases. The proposed method is model-free without specifying any regression forms of predictors or response variables and is robust under the unknown monotone transformations of these response variable and predictors. The sure-screening and rank-consistency properties are established under some mild regularity conditions. Simulation studies demonstrate that the new screening method performs well in the presence of a heavy-tailed distribution, strongly dependent predicto

The small sample properties of a variant of the Spearman rank correlation coefficient applied in the time-series context were investigated through Monte Carlo methods. The rank method ( r1S) has even greater bias than the highly biased conventional parametric procedure; a traditional test of H0: ρ1 = 0 based on ( r1S) yields unacceptable properties. Empirical small sample distributions associated with the rank coefficient differ markedly from the distributions predicted by asymptotic theory. Forward selection (FS) is a step-by-step model-building algorithm for linear regression. The FS algorithm was expressed in terms of sample correlations where Pearson’s product-moment correlation was used. The FS yields poor results when the data contain contaminations. In this article, we propose the use of Spearman’s rank correlation in FS. The proposed method is called FSr. We conduct an extensive simulation study to compare the performance of FSr with FS. The proposed FSr performs better than the FS algorithm in the contaminated data. We also demonstrate a real data application of FSr.DOI:
